a bit of a tangent and not celeste specifically, but people have this weird tendency of undermining total conversion mods and fanworks in general, i hear people talking about how indies are those amazing new experiences and a miracle of gamedev and then refuse to play any fancontent IN THE SAME BREATH, like, what do you think those tc mods and fangames are??

like, it's insane just how much thriving modscenes there are and how small the amount of people who know of those new and unique games is

not even sure if this has to do with perceived "professionalism" of official releases or the view that modding is this thing you sometimes do to replace a bunch of models and some textures

people need to stop enshrining vanilla on games with a lot of fan works

vanilla Celeste is amazing, sure, but it also kinda not the best compared to what people with greater knowledge of the system have been able to do, and yet people do enshrine vanilla

while this is mainly me discussing gameplay, I do wonder if something with a story that is on a similar or greater level than vanilla would even be discussed in the same breath - the best story levels in Celeste are not at that point yet, or so I feel, but I don't imagine it will be particularly long before they can be considered such

Odd pic right? That's one of my sites. It got me doxxed a long time ago. I'm a nerd & a girl, but that had nothing to do with GamerGate. This predated that by years. Back then, I did a lot of small mods for The Sims 2 (TS2). A small, but LOUD, minority of the TS2 community decided they hated any site that charged money for their mods. On my site 99% of my mods were free but I had 2 sets that were gifts for people who donated. That meant I was officially labeled a "pay site" - the ultimate evil 🙄 At first I shut my site down b/c fuck people. Websites cost money & I'll be damned if I'm going not going to run my site the way I see fit.⠀ .⠀ That solved nothing. My home address & phone number were published. Someone who had my donation sets published them on a rogue website setup in Malaysia (which doesn't recognized int'l copyright law). That site hosted 1,000s of stolen mods. My phone started ringing off the hook - upwards of 30 calls a day. I had to change my number. I, however, was only a minor target. Other creators had to deal w/death threats, enough to warrant investigation by the FBI.⠀ .⠀ Ultimately I did bring the site back (its still up to this day), but I stopped modding for a very long time. I left art school w/zero desire to ever mod another game. Years later, I did a few small mods for #Minecraft #Oblivion & #Skyrim but only small stuff & only b/c I want it in my game. Each time I decide to share a mod, the anxiety & bitterness are always there.⠀ .⠀ It fucking sucks that I know I'm not alone. That voices WAY more talented than mine remain silent b/c a few script kiddies playing 'l33t haxxor' like to make life hell for people. Just for the lulz. So many modders quit b/c they're tired of the hate, the insults, & the threats. So now I hesitate to talk about ANYTHING nerdy b/c, well, I'm 44yo as of today. I don't need anymore script kiddies BS because my OPINION or my mod pisses someone off. I am a nerd, not as hardcore as most admittedly, but I'm still a nerd & love nerdy things.
