I testi socialmente coscienti del gruppo, che commentano sulle aspettative culturali ed economiche coreane, sono molto più provocatori di quelli dei loro compagni del K-pop. Anche la loro musica è rimasta progressista nelle sue influenze: invece di recapitare dei motivi inequivocabilmente pop mentre la loro presenza diventa sempre più grande nell’industria musicale statunitense, i BTS hanno tratto dal rock arena, dall’hip-hop contemporaneo, da frammenti di new wave e di bubblegum, il genere di svolta del secolo, per escogitare un sound distintivo che funzioni per il mainstream moderno.

Con la fine della serie di “Love Yourself” e l’inizio di una nuova era, le sette canzoni di “Map of the Soul: Persona” vedono i sette membri del gruppo accennare al loro passato mentre al contempo prendono dei rischi sonori impressionanti, spingendo la loro estetica al limite senza però abbandonare il proprio centro. “Home” richiama il loro singolo del 2013 “No More Dream” ma scopre nuovi sentimenti di disaffezione e solitudine nel bel mezzo di uno sbalorditivo successo. Altrove invece la canzone scritta da Sheeran “Make It Right” tende alla R&B Top 40, stadio in cui sembra trovarsi il cantautore britannico, e questa soave sfumatura sembra piuttosto affascinante sui BTS.

Eppure è l’ultima traccia dell’album, “Dionysus”, che meglio sottolinea l’ambizione di questo gruppo. Facendola semplice questa è la canzone più stravagante che i BTS abbiano mai rilasciato ed essendo la traccia più lunga e quella che chiude l’album potrebbe essere un segnale di un qualche esperimento ancora più ribelle che deve arrivare.

Prende il nome dal dio greco del vino associato a dissolutezza ed eccesso, “Dionysus” sembra una canzone da festa ma si focalizza molto sul desiderio del gruppo di continuare a fare musica secondo i loro termini, con riflessioni rapide sulla fama, eredità ed integrità artistica (“Bevilo tutto, il dolore della creazione”, così inizia il pre-ritornello). La metafora centrale qui – l’ambizione musicale è un qualcosa che i BTS non smetteranno mai di inseguire – è difficile da rendere e bisogna osservare attentamente il testo per apprendere meglio le sfumature. D’altra parte “Dionysus” poteva essere semplicemente una canzone da festa, con urla come: “Bevi, bevi, bevi!” che non racchiudono un significato più profondo. Una frase come “Cosa importa che io sia un idol o un artista?” durante il verso di Suga porta ad un momento stimolante di autoriflessione, specialmente quando viene pronunciato dal membro di un gruppo che ha sempre espresso il voler fare musica che abbia importanza. Sia chiaro, non c’è nulla di sbagliato nella musica da festa sciocca e divertente, ma i BTS non sono gli LMFAO e gli shot di cui parlano loro in “Dionysus” hanno più significato di… beh di quelli di “Shots” [*canzone degli LMFAO].

Di ancor più vasto interesse dei concetti espressi dal testo della canzone è la sua composizione, la quale vanta riff in più parti, versi tagliati (N/B: sono effetti tipici della tecnica del “clipping”), breakdown trap (N/B: un “breakdown” in musica è una parte di un brano dove vengono usati vari strumenti per creare degli assoli) e un ritornello finale estremamente rapido con batteria in double-time nel caso in cui ci si stesse iniziando ad annoiare. “Dionysus” è un crescendo di suoni diversi, a cominciare da RM che sputa i suoi versi su una “sgargiante” base tra il rap e il rock, passando poi per canti tribali e un synthpop che fa battere forte il petto prima della folle parte di Suga che non sarebbe fuori luogo in un lavoro dei Migos (N/B: Un trio hip-hop statunitense). Pur durando soltanto quattro minuti o poco più, “Dionysus” si presenta come una suite dove si alternano più canzoni e nella quale tutti e sette i membri contribuiscono alle varie transizioni [di suoni] che si susseguono.

“Dionysus” risulta forse per questo essere priva di difetti? No, ci sono almeno due parti della traccia che sembrano essere state lì cucite senza motivo, ma nello sguardo d’insieme essa è una delle canzoni più originali nel K-pop ad alto budget degli ultimi tempi e sicuramente un elemento di spicco nella discografia dei BTS per quel che riguarda l’immaginazione. Nonostante ci siano momenti più puri di estasi pop in “Map of the Soul: Persona”, “Dionysus” ha un certo spirito inventivo che si fa strada tra le scelte produttive più maldestre e la rende la traccia più memorabile tra le nuove canzoni dell’album.

Guardando al contesto generale, “Dionysus” potrebbe rivelarsi essere un punto di svolta nella produzione musicale dei BTS, se saranno loro a volerlo. Da un punto di vista commerciale, il gruppo ha già conquistato il mondo del K-Pop, e i milioni di fan adoranti e i numerosi successi nelle classifiche sono un simbolo del loro dominio sull’industria, ma da quello creativo, i membri vogliono scendere ancora più in profondità sperimentando nella composizione e strutturazione delle loro canzoni in modi che potrebbero essere rivoluzionari per il genere. Se i BTS useranno “Dionysus” come trampolino per il loro prossimo progetto, bisognerà allora aspettarselo ancora più audace di “Map of the Soul: Persona”, proprio come per quest’ultimo si è rischiato più che in “Love Yourself: Answer”. I BTS non si sono mai adagiati sugli allori, nella loro ascesa al firmamento delle stelle della musica, e a giudicare da “Dionysus”, non smetteranno di sconvolgere il panorama musicale tanto presto”.
