‘Hello?’ you said awkwardly as you walked into the large car repair shop. You quickly turned when you heard a tool being slammed on the ground and you saw a man appear from underneath a car.
‘Aye?’ the man asked, with a thick Irish accent, ‘can I help ya, lady?’
‘Yeah, eh, my car… it’s… something’s wrong.’
‘Something?’ the man laughed and got up, ‘that doesn’t narrow it down.’
‘Sorry,’ you blushed, ‘I only just got my license and this is my first car.’
‘Oh,’ the man snorted, ‘I’ll have a look. Show me the problem.’
You walked outside to your car and unlocked the door, you told the Irish man that your car kept shutting down if you let the engine run longer than a minute without driving. He tested it himself and agreed there was something wrong, but nothing they couldn’t fix. He walked you back inside to fill in some paperwork.
‘So, lady… (y/n),’ the man said with a smile, we will give you a call when it’s fixed. Do you need a rental car in the meantime?’
‘Oh, no, I’ll be fine, thank you.’
You smiled and shook his hand before you left, awaiting the call.
—----------------
Two days later your phone rang.
‘Hello?’
‘Hi, this is Finan,’ an Irish accent said, ‘from the car repair shop, your car has been fixed and is ready to be picked up.’
‘Oh, thank you! I’ll be there as soon as I can.’
You took a bus and got off near the repair shop. You took off your sunglasses as you walked in, expecting to see the friendly Irish man again, but instead you were startled by the sound of a trunk being slammed shut harshly. You looked to where the sound came from and locked eyes with a handsome man who had short, dark hair and had a tattoo on his neck, which ran up to the side of his head. His face had black smudges on it, just like his sleeveless shirt and his, very toned, arms. You didn’t realise your mouth had fallen slightly open when you took in the sight of the man across from you.
‘I’m sorry, did I startle you?’ the man grinned as he walked over to you and threw a dirty cloth over his shoulder.
‘I, I,’ you stammered, watching him approach and unfortunately realising he was even more handsome up close, ‘I am just… here to,’ you swallowed hard when you saw his mismatched eyes and old scars on his face, ‘I’m here to pick up my c-car.’
‘Your car?’ he frowned, ‘are you sure you’re in the right place?’ he smirked and winked.
‘I’m… I’m sorry?’ you smiled nervously and felt yourself blush.
‘I’m only messing with you, lady,’ he chuckled and nudged your shoulder as he walked past you, ‘come, I’ll have to look at the paperwork. What brand is your car?’
‘It’s…’ you mumbled as you walked after him, desperately trying to remember which brand it was, but failed to recall it, ‘I… don’t know.’
The man stopped at the desk and looked at you with an amusing look on his face.
‘You don’t know the brand of your car?’
‘I only just bought it,’ you tried to defend yourself, ‘I think the logo has a circle.’
‘A circle, huh?’ the man smiled and rubbed his hands over his goatee, ‘let me think, a brand with a circle in its logo.’
‘Maybe… maybe the brand was Audi?’ you simply guessed at this point.
‘Lady,’ the man snorted, ‘that’s one of the few brands that does not have a circle in its logo.’
‘Oh,’ you said and shook your head, ‘I’m… I’m sorry.’
‘I’m still messing with you,’ he chuckled, ‘I’m the one who should say sorry. So consider this as my apology.’
‘Oh, well…’ you giggled, still flustered, ‘apology accepted I suppose.’
‘Good,’ he smiled and licked his lips, ‘what is your name?’
‘My name?’
‘Yeah,’ the man squinted his eyes slightly, ‘the name you gave us when you brought your car here.’
‘Oh!’ you laughed nervously and shook your head, ‘it’s (y/n).’
You watched how the man calmly flipped through some papers on the desk, and you couldn’t help but sigh quietly as you saw how his arm flexed slightly when he pulled open a drawer. What a sight, you thought.
‘By the gods,’ the handsome man muttered and snorted before he looked up at you, ‘your name is indeed attached to an Audi.’
‘Oh,’ you chuckled, ‘see, I told you.’
‘You did tell me, I should have listened,’ he smiled and pulled your keys out of the drawer, ‘but my colleague always tells me that I am not very good at listening. At least, I think that’s what he said,’ he winked and motioned you to walk with him.
‘The Irish man? Finan?’ you asked.
‘That’s him. Truth is that I do hear him talk, I just chose to not listen anymore,’ he smirked and you couldn’t help but giggle. He was handsome and funny, you didn’t know men like that still existed in your town.
‘I’m Sihtric, by the way,’ he stopped walking and held his hand out to you.
You took his hand and smiled with a blush, ‘Nice to meet you.'
‘Nice to meet you too, (y/n),’ he smiled. You felt yourself blush again when he didn’t let go of your hand right away and looked into your eyes just a tad too long. He chuckled lightly at your reddened cheeks and finally let go of your hand and turned to walk to your car.
‘So,’ Sihtric said as he unlocked your car and pointed to the logo on the front, which had 4 circles, ‘where exactly is the circle in the logo?’
‘Really?’ you snorted, ‘I am going to leave this place a bad review now. You always make fun of your customers?’
‘Only when they’re as pretty as you.’
‘W-what?’
‘You heard me,’ Sihtric smiled and rolled his eyes, and you saw him clutch the pendant around his neck in his fist, ‘but you’re honestly the first one I’ve made fun of,’ he winked and handed you the keys.
And if he had winked at you one more time, you would have dragged him with you to the backseat of your car and ripped that filthy shirt off his chest.
‘Well,’ you giggled as you sat down behind the wheel, ‘thank you, I suppose. And thank you for fixing my car.’
‘You’re more than welcome,’ Sihtric smiled and carefully closed your car door, being very aware you hadn’t paid yet.
You rolled down your window, it was summer after all, and you looked up at him with a smile as he leaned in, resting his hands on your car.
‘But I will still leave that bad review,’ you teased.
‘Oh, I’m looking forward to it. Don’t forget to call us when you need help again.’
‘I will make sure to not call you guys again,’ you chuckled.
‘Yeah, yeah. I’ll see you again, lady,’ Sihtric smirked once more and licked his lips again before he turned and walked away.
—----------
You woke up in the middle of the night, suddenly realising you never paid for the repair of your car and you buried your face in your pillow. You hadn’t stopped thinking about Sihtric ever since you had seen him, and now you had to go back to the repair shop to pay. You felt embarrassed and didn’t realise Sihtric had done it on purpose. He didn’t actually expect you to come back, but he knew there was a chance and even if you didn’t return, the repair costs had been so minor, he thought you were cute enough to let this one slide. But you couldn’t live with yourself and went back the next day.
Once again it was a hot summer day, and the heat had also snuck inside the repair shop. Yesterday it seemed rather cool in contrast to the temperature outside, but today it seemed as boiling inside as it was outside. You puffed at the heat as you walked in, once again looking for an employee, and once again you were startled when you heard tools clatter on the floor.
‘Broke your car already?’ Sihtric chuckled when he saw you.
You snapped your head towards him and discovered he was once again decorated with black smudges on his face, as were his toned arms, but you froze at the sight of his bare chest covered with those same smudges. You felt yourself turn red at the sight of his shirtless body and thanked the gods for this hot summer day, so your red cheeks weren’t a strange sight.
‘I…I… did not break my car,’ you hissed, but couldn’t hold back your smile.
He was too damn handsome and it was an absolute crime to look this good.
‘So you just came back to see me again?’
‘What? N-no, I… I’m…’
Sihtric!’ Finan suddenly yelled as he walked in, ‘get back to work.’
‘Yes, boss,’ he mocked and saluted Finan as he walked by, ‘I was just distracted,’ Sihtric winked at you, and you thought you were about to pass out.
‘Is he bothering you?’ Finan asked and shook his head.
‘It’s fine,’ you chuckled, ‘but, eh, I picked up my car yesterday and only when I was in bed, I realised that I had forgotten to pay. I’m really sorry, so that’s why I’m here.’
Sihtric grinned and watched you satisfyingly as he was underneath a car again.
‘Aye, lady, that is very kind. I will tell my colleague off for that later.’
‘No, I … I really didn’t think about it either, it’s my fault too.’
‘Well,’ Finan said as you paid, ‘I’m thankful you came back.
‘You’re welcome,’ you smiled and nodded before you walked back out to your car.
‘Thought about me when you were in bed, huh?’ Sihtric taunted from underneath a car as you walked past him.
‘Bad review,’ you warned him and quickly walked to your car to hide your red cheeks.
You sat behind the wheel and covered your face in your hands, leaning forwards, wishing the world would just swallow you whole now. To make things worse, you leaned in too far and too fast and accidentally honked as your elbows collided with the steering wheel.
You saw both men look up at you, Finan with a frown and Sihtric with a grin, and you quickly started your car and got out of there.
—------------------------------------------
It had been a few weeks since you first met Sihtric, and it had been a nightmare to forget him. You just couldn’t. He had made you a hot mess both times you saw him, but you had regained your confidence and were desperate to lay eyes on him again. Preferably shirtless.
Since Sihtric had been messing with you, and you yearned to see him again, you toyed with the idea of just stopping by, claiming there was something wrong with your car even when there wasn’t. You felt bad at the idea, knowing you’d rob him of his time, but what else could you do? So you did it anyway. You made a little effort to look nice and got in your car, thinking of lies you could tell him about your car.
You pulled onto the parking lot and got out of your car. Before you had closed the door behind you, you spotted Sihtric who was already looking at you with a sly smile. He was sitting outside in the sun, enjoying a coffee, unfortunately not shirtless this time, but he lowered his sunglasses when you smiled and walked over to him.
‘Lady,’ he said as he looked you up and down, ‘can I help you?’
Oh, you could help me, you thought, help me take off my clothes.
‘My car,’ you smiled innocently, ‘I think something’s wrong.’
‘Is there now?’ Sihtric bit down on his lip, ‘you want me to take a look at it?’
‘If you have the time?’ you fluttered your eyelashes, slightly blushing.
‘For you?’ he smiled and paused, ‘always.’
He got up and followed you as you walked to your car, smirking as he checked you out from behind, but sighed and rolled his eyes when Finan ruined the moment as he greeted you.
‘Hi, ya,’ Finan said, ‘issues with the engine again?’
‘Oh, eh, no,’ you blushed, ‘it’s… it’s… a weird noise sometimes, but that's... that's not why I'm here.’
‘A weird noise?’ Finan frowned, ‘it ran fine when I last tried it.’
‘Finan,’ Sihtric said, raising an eyebrow, ‘let me do my job?’
‘Alright, yeah, just making sure it’s not the same issue. The car’s too young to have the same issue coming back,’ Finan smiled politely at you, ‘good day, ma’am.’
‘Thank you,’ you smiled, feeling relieved he didn’t take over from Sihtric.
You left the car door open and went to sit behind the wheel, Sihtric crouched down next to you outside of the car and watched you start the engine.
‘It’s… this.. light, in the dashboard, a little icon that keeps glowing,’ you lied.
‘What icon is it?’ Sihtric asked and looked concentrated at the dashboard, his jaw clenched, waiting for anything out of the ordinary to appear.
‘I’m not sure actually,’ you chuckled, ‘it randomly appears and then it won’t go out.’
‘Hm,’ Sihtric hummed, ‘nothing weird seems to happen now. And no weird noise either.’
‘Of course it’s not showing now,’ you chuckled, and as you felt a rush of confidence you brushed your fingertips over Sihtric’s arm, ‘the problem never occurs when someone looks at it, right?’
‘Right,’ Sihtric smiled and leaned in closer to you, ‘well, unfortunately I can’t help you right now if I can’t see or hear the problem.’
The problem is that you are still fully dressed, you thought, and cursed yourself for being so weak for a car mechanic.
‘Oh, I understand. I just hoped it would show up now,’ you sighed.
‘Keep an eye on it, will you?’ Sihtric looked up at you with a soft smile, ‘if you think anything is wrong, just come back here and I’ll take a look at it.’
‘Okay,’ you smiled, ‘do I need to call in before I come here?’
‘No, it’s all good, you can come anytime.’
So can you, you thought, and had to bite your lip to stop yourself from smirking.
‘Okay, thank you, Sihtric.’
‘You’re more than welcome,’ he smiled and also had to bite down on his lip.
Hearing his name coming out of your mouth was a blessing to his ears, and he hoped he’d hear it again, just in a different setting. Preferably when he was on top of you. And he had to compose himself, unbeknownst to him that you struggled to contain your thoughts just like he did.
—--------------------------------
Sihtric was on your mind 24/7 by now. You’d seen him a few days ago and that had only made your lust for him worse. He was so kind yet so rough looking at the same time and you were so desperate to get to know him, but you didn’t dare to ask him out on a date. You hoped that he would ask you, but you still weren’t sure if he was interested in you or just being a kind mechanic. You had to find out, and there was only one way to do so. But you couldn’t come in with the same lie.
You got in your car, and as you drove out of your parking spot you deliberately hit the tree which was positioned next to the right side of your car, causing the mirror to crack. You smiled proudly and drove to the repair store.
As you turned into the parking lot you saw Sihtric jump up, recognizing your car already. You rolled down your window as he leaned in and you smiled politely.
‘Can I help you?’ Sihtric smirked.
‘My mirror,’ you shrugged.
Sihtric chuckled at the sight of your cracked mirror and shook his head.
‘You gotta be more careful, lady.’
‘I know, I know. But the tree was even closer than it appeared to be.’
‘Gods,’ Sihtric smiled, ‘and how’s the dashboard icon? Still appearing? And the noise?’
‘Sometimes,’ you lied, anything to keep his attention.
‘I can fix the mirror, it won’t take long, but I do have to fix another car before I can take a look at yours. You can pick it up at 5, if that suits you?’
‘Sure, not a problem. Do I need to go through the whole paperwork again?’
‘We can do that when you pick it up, my break is almost over.’
‘Fine by me,’ you smiled.
Sihtric opened the door for you and offered you his hand. You accepted his completely unnecessary help and got out of your car. He closed the door behind you and he held your hand just a little too long for it to be just polite.
‘I will see you later then,’ he smiled, finally letting go of your hand.
‘You will,’ you said and walked away. You glanced back over your shoulder and caught Sihtric checking you out with a smirk, but he quickly looked away when you had caught him in the act.
‘Her again?’ Finan huffed as he walked over to Sihtric, ‘what is it now?’
‘Broke her mirror,’ Sihtric said, composing himself, ‘and the dashboard icon is still a problem, as is the noise.’
‘I don’t understand, the car is way too young to have those issues. The mirror, fine, that’s a human mistake, but the rest?’
‘Finan, why are you so worked up over this?’
‘It makes me feel like I did a shit job fixing her car last time, and I hate that feeling!’
‘Don’t worry about it, okay, I’m fixing it now,’ Sihtric said and punched Finan’s shoulder, ‘besides, you are shit at fixing cars.’

✎……MASTERLIST

It had been five years since high school graduation. And the Amelia County High School Rodeo Team class of 2015 decided to get together for a little reunion. Team captains, Taylor Goyer and Dalton Allen, organized the whole thing. Sent out invitations, made sure everyone paid them on time for tickets and group meals and the rental they were all staying at together.
They were turning the reunion into a real affair. A week long trip to Cheyenne for the Frontier Days. A nationally known two-week rodeo event that they all dreamed of participating in when they were teenagers. But now, most of them had given up on the rodeo life — working regular jobs with only fond memories of roping cattle, riding bareback, and wrestling steer.
Not to mention the mansion AirBnB monstrosity in Cheyenne they chose to rent. With a pool, seven bedrooms, and a kitchen big enough to feed an army. It cost a ridiculous amount, even split up between fourteen people.
They were going to trash the place, of that much Tessa Abernathy was certain. But at least they would all have fun together again. Just like those long bus rides to South Dakota or sneaking down to the hotel pool at midnight in Montana.
And despite her apprehensions about going, Tessa was excited about the trip. She hadn’t been to Frontier Days since she was a kid and even though there was always going to be a mess that needed cleaning at the rental, she was looking forward to hanging out with her old friends again.
But the excitement quickly drained from her when they got back from their first day at the Frontier — only just now getting inside their AirBnB at nearly midnight. A day filled with midway carnival rides, taste testing beers in the garden, and exploring old frontier town.
“You’ve got t’be kidding,” Tessa said to Taylor as everyone went their separate ways in the living room — to their beds for the night.
“Sorry babe,” Taylor spoke sympathetically with a hand on her shoulder. “But ya fell asleep on the ride over.”
“So that means I have t’room with him?” she whispered back, trying not to let him hear — because, even though she didn’t want to share a room with him, didn’t mean she wanted to hurt his feelings either.
Taylor laughed lightly. “S’s just Rhett. Not like he’s gonna murder ya.”
“But — But y’said each room only has a double…” Tessa shifted her eyes over to him warily. “He’s a guy.”
He was standing at the bottom of the stairs. Duffle bag at his booted feet. At this moment, she hated to admit that he looked good. Really good. Wearing dark jeans and a t-shirt from an old rodeo, trucker-cap on his head covering those dark brown curls that stuck out the back. The veins in his forearms and the backs of his hands standing out in stark contrast in the dim light of the foyer. She also hated that he was being nice enough to wait on her.
It sparked to life something that had been living inside her since she was fourteen. An adolescent crush she thought had been snuffed out by time. But no. Apparently the only thing that was needed to bring it to life again was the prospect of sharing a bed with him. With Rhett Abbott. The only one of their old team who still lived the rodeo life. Who made a living off riding bulls and had the reputation to back it up. She was surprised he even signed up to come on this trip.
“Tess, look, y’re a big girl. If it bothers ya so much, y’can sleep on the couch down here.” Taylor gestured to the living room where a small mid-century modern leather atrocity sat waiting for her. “Be my guest.”
“Ugh, fine.”
With a roll of her eyes and a heat in her cheeks she begged to God would go away, she picked up her bag and headed for the stairs. Rhett smiled, small and unsure, as she passed him. But she didn’t dare look at him for more than a second. Would rather spare herself the embarrassment for the time being.
“Last door on the left!” Taylor called out and laughed when Tessa gave her a thumbs up back without looking.
The room, at least, was nice. Hardwood floors with a nice big rug, a window seat that overlooked the backyard, an ensuite bathroom shared with the room next to them, and a four-poster canopy bed with a fluffy comforter and pillows.
With a sigh, Tessa dropped her bag by the wardrobe shoved against the wall opposite the bed. Claiming at least one space for herself. Rhett followed in shortly after that, something tentative in his steps as he set his duffle down by the door and toed off his boots.
“Y’mind if I shut the door?” he asked quietly, voice a low grumble in his chest after a long day.
“Um — y-yeah, that’s fine,” she replied, nervously rubbing at the thighs of her jeans.
Rhett closed the door softly and suddenly she felt like there wasn’t enough space in the room. Not enough air. She moved away from him slowly, trying not to make it obvious, and towards the large window. Feigning wanting to look at the view.
“Look, I, uh…I don’wanna make ya uncomfortable,” he started slowly and she turned to him with furrowed brows, listening. “I c’n jus’ — sleep on the floor’re somethin’.”
Tessa immediately shook her head. “No, m’not gonna make y’do that. N’that couch downstairs looks about as uncomfortable as these floors, so…”
They both laughed gently at that. And somehow she was starting to hate him more while simultaneously fighting down the butterflies in her stomach. Why did he have to be so courteous too? So nice? She didn’t want to make him sleep on the floor. He would be miserable, most likely sore and sleep deprived. And neither of them really wanted to subject themselves to even sitting on that couch, let alone trying to sleep on it. So there were really no other options. It was the bed for both of them. Even though the idea left Tessa’s guts swirling and her sweaty hands wringing themselves red.
“So y’re okay with sharin’?” he questioned with a glance towards the bed.
The bed that suddenly looked so, so small.
“In a minute, maybe,” she laughed nervously, pushing a hand through her hair. “Let’s jus’...Get ready f’r bed n’bite the bullet.”
Rhett huffed. “Makin’ it sound like y’re sharin’ a bed with an ogre.”
“M’sorry! I jus’, uh — haven’t really — done this sorta — Jesus, this’s embarrassin’,” she grumbled, trying to hide her reddening cheeks with her hands.
“Shit, Tess, I’s jokin’,” he chuckled lowly, taking his hat off with the first two fingers of his hand and setting it down on the small table by the door.
“Right.” She wanted to kick herself, or disappear into the floor, or just something. So instead she chose to grab her bag and head for the bathroom. “M’gonna change.”
“Okay,” he laughed again with a shake of his head.
How can he be so calm about this? How can he be so casual about sharing a bed with a girl he barely knows? She supposed, as she slipped into the bathroom and locked the door behind her, he was used to this kind of thing. Going around the circuit and sleeping with whatever buckle bunny showed interest. Or at least that was what the rumor mill around Wabang liked to tell her. This was just a regular Tuesday night for him. But it wasn’t for her. She had barely even kissed a guy let alone shared a bed with one. In either sense of the word. An embarrassing factoid she liked to keep to herself, one that she hoped Rhett Abbott wouldn’t pick up on as he slept right beside her for the next six nights.
Once changed into her pajamas, with her teeth and hair brushed, Tessa came back out into the bedroom sheepishly. But she couldn’t help the delicate squeak that slipped past her lips at the sight of Rhett standing on one side of the bed.
In nothing but his boxers. Showing off those broad shoulders and toned abdomen, that bull-rider tattoo on his chest and the scar on his shoulder, and those pale but thick thighs.
At the sound, he looked over at her with scrunched brows and thin lips downturned. Then he looked her up and down.
“That what you wear t’bed? Seriously?”
Tessa looked down at her clothes, a pink pajama set — shorts and a tank top — with strawberries all over. She thought they were cute, and always liked wearing pajama sets to bed, even when she was alone. But now that she was standing in front of him, she just felt silly and like she needed to cover up. She crossed her arms in front of herself and gave him a look.
“That’s what you wear t’bed? Seriously?” she repeated, looking pointedly at his plaid boxers, trying to match his tone.
“S’hot!” he defended with a gesture towards the window.
“Y’could at least put on a shirt r’somethin’,” she went on, crossing the room to stand on the other side of the bed.
Rhett rolled his eyes. “S’not like y’re wearin’ much more than me.”
“I didn’think I’d have t’share a room!” she shot back, yanking back the covers with a huff and a deep breath.
It seemed he had no rebuttal for that. Instead, he quietly slipped the t-shirt he was wearing earlier back on before sitting down at the edge of the bed. Back turned to her as he messed with his phone.
There was relative silence between them after that. Tessa set out her slippers for the morning, knowing she was going to be the first one up and her bare toes would freeze on this floor. Then she plugged in her phone and set it on the side table, setting no alarm. There was nothing on the reunion schedule until one o’clock in the afternoon. A shared lunch at some cantina in town before heading back to the Frontier.
She settled back in the covers, trying to keep as close to the edge of the mattress as possible to keep as much space between her and Rhett. The overhead light was turned off, only the light of their respective table lamps remained. Tessa shut her’s off with another sigh she hoped didn’t sound as shaky outloud as it did in her head.
Rhett didn’t seem to notice. Too preoccupied with his phone as he kicked up his feet and leaned back against the headboard, a small smile on his face. She looked over her shoulder at him curiously.
“That Maria?” she questioned before she could stop herself.
She knew they had reconnected recently, what with Maria back in Wabang from college what seemed like permanently. And she knew Rhett always had a crush on her. Which was why Tessa’s crush always seemed like a futile and doomed little thing. Who was she in comparison to Maria Olivares? The girl Rhett’s been dreaming about since he was a kid? She had seen them hanging out together at the Handsome Gambler, even making out outside the Pit Bar once or twice. Always a fleeting thought and never something she focused on. She wasn’t sure they were dating, but they were certainly a Thing — whatever that meant for them.
“Uh, yeah,” Rhett replied, locking his phone and setting it aside. “Tellin’ me about’er day.”
“You gonna tell’er y’re sharin’ a bed with someone else?” she asked with a grin.
“Probably not,” he laughed. “She…Hasn’t really asked about the trip anyways, so…”
“Oh.” That seemed odd to Tessa. If she was his girlfriend, and he was gone on a week-long trip, she would be asking every day what he was doing. Wondering if he was having fun and being safe. But that was none of her business. “What she doesn’t know won’t hurt’er, I guess?”
“Yeah, I guess,” he chuckled again.
He leaned over and turned out his light, basking the room in total darkness.
The next morning, Tessa woke up first as she guessed.
But it was the way she woke up that was entirely unexpected.
That made her gut sink through to the floor and a heat build up so strong in her cheeks she felt like she was on fire.
Her head wasn’t even on her pillow anymore. Somehow, she had rolled over in her sleep and was laying with her head on Rhett’s firm yet somehow comfortable chest. Her arm was draped over his torso, her leg hitched up over his hips. And his arm…His arm was curved around her waist.
His fingers shoved into the waistband of her shorts, resting against the curve of her ass.
With another delicate little squeak, Tessa pulled away from him and scrambled up from the bed. Rhett didn’t seem too bothered by her sudden and not so subtle movement. He only groaned and rolled over. A heavy sleeper it seemed. And she stared at him wide eyed, standing there still feeling his warmth on her skin.
This was going to be a long week.

Oh, darn, I said that I'd write a post about volunteering at an academic conference and then I just Didn't Do That. So here's my experience volunteering for the World Congress of Environmental History. The WCEH is a congress that is arranged every four or five years and it focuses on environmental history. This year, the conference's theme was transitions, transformations and transdisciplinarity, so there were panels from all sorts of fields and from so many points of views.
Before the congress itself, I joined WCEH's social media team. The social media team's first task was to make videos introducing the Linnanmaa campus, which were then posted on Instagram and Twitter, for which I wrote the script. Here is the first video on Twitter. Here is the second video on Twitter.
Our training for the conference consisted of five meetings before the conference.
As I packed my backpack for the first meeting, I decided that I wouldn’t take along the novel that I was reading at the time (Frankenstein terapiassa by Jenny Jägerfeld and Mats Standberg) because I thought I wouldn’t have time to read it, even if I got there early, as I tend to do. I ended up regretting this decision as the lesson started behind schedule. However, I absolutely do not hold this against the lecturer because I also know how it is with the trains, as someone who also regularly travels by train. VR, venaa rauhassa, as we say here. This is just an anecdote that I thought was funny.
During the first meeting, we had a lecture held by a representative from the Oulu tourism board giving us pointers on what tourists can do in Oulu during summer. This was extremely valuable because it had not even crossed my mind that the conference participants and guests might ask what to do after the conference presentations.
To write a short summary of the tourism talk, we talked about transport (bus, bike rental), the islands near Oulu and how to get to them and what to do on them, saunas, the waterpark, the beaches and nature trails. It was emphasised that when someone asks for a restaurant recommendation, we should not just give our favourite restaurant, we should ask what kind of cuisine the asker wants and then recommend something. We were given a tip of having a map app or the Summer Tips brochure open on our phones at all times so we can quickly show something on our phones. To the question “what should I do in Oulu?” we should ask some specifying questions: how much time does the person have? What do they like to do? Do they have a car? And work from there. As a last resort, it could be good to recommend the market hall because it has tourist information. This was very valuable for me because social skills are one of my biggest weaknesses. Having scripts like this memorised will make it much easier for me to be more effective in answering questions.
During this meeting it started to dawn on me just how unique this event would be. WCEH is organised only every fifth year, so this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to get some work experience before graduation.
Our second meeting concerned the AV technology in the classrooms that would be used during the conference. This was also useful work experience because being fluent with AV technology could be a good skill to have in this modern era. WCEH was a hybrid conference, which meant that there were in-person panels, but they were also possible to attend via Zoom and they were recorded to watch later.
The first day of the congress started a little roughly for me. I woke up with mild stomach pain, which continued to 10 AM, which is when the reception for the congress opened. I had to be there to tweet about the reception opening. Thankfully, I ended up making it on time to the reception desk. Then at 11, I found out that the congress staff wouldn't have a complimentary lunch, so I had to run back to my apartment for lunch, which I had to do in the rain. I hadn't checked the weather before leaving home, so I didn't have an umbrella with me either. My shoes and socks ended up getting soaked.
On Monday, I also had a panel that I was supposed to supervise and I feel like I didn't do a good job. The first problem that I quickly found was that the laptop did not have any free USB ports left. The speakers and I ended up having to unplug the microphone to plug a flashdrive in, copy the slide shows onto the laptop and plugging the microphone in. This turned out to be a bad idea, because it messed with the microphone’s settings. The microphone kept showing error messages in Zoom for the first session. I hope that it did not affect the recording. The second problem was that the projector would not turn on. I had to call NomadIT (our IT support for the conference) for help, which made the panels start ten minutes late. Other than that, the first session went fine.
Before the second session, I asked NomadIT which USB I should unplug for the flashdrive and I was told to unplug the camera. Keeping that in mind, I started the second session much more easily, now that most of the problems were taken care of during the first session. However, the speakers forgot to unplug the flashdrive and replug the camera and I did not want to interrupt the speaker, so most of the Zoom meeting was recorded without a camera. I can only hope that the slide shows and panel’s audio at least saved fine. I don't think I will be an AV-tech expert anytime soon…
I went home without going to the opening ceremony, which I ended up regretting because it turned out that the male choir Huutajat performed there. It would've been cool to see them, even if I'm not a fan... 🥲
On Tuesday, I only had one shift, but I still had work to do from morning onwards, when I posted on X on behalf of other people in the social media group. I also helped look up people’s X and Instagram handles so we could @ mention them in our posts. Good thing I stayed at my apartment for that, so I could access my laptop and do it quicker than on my phone. I found it a little amusing that I was essentially doing some social media stalking, but in a professional and academic sense.
At the campus, I was asked to tweet about a panel named Arctic Spotlight before it started and do short interviews with the panel speakers. This turned out to be very chaotic. Adding on to the tasks I already had, the lecture hall's computer keyboard wasn't working, so I had to send out a SOS to the IT support, which I then didn't even have time to follow up on and check that the keyboard issue would be fixed. Another social team member and I then immediately had to do the short interviews, which thankfully were done quickly. Arctic Spotlight ended up starting in time, so I think the keyboard issue was sorted without me having to follow it. This short, hectic period taught me how to manage overlapping tasks on a short notice, how to delegate tasks and how to trust other people to do those delegated tasks.
Wednesday was very uneventful, but that was welcome after the chaos on Tuesday. Someone had forgotten their bag in the restrooms, so I wrote and posted a tweet about where to look for lost items.
Thursday was easily the longest day for me. I went to the reception desk, where someone asked for directions to the Botanical gardens. This made me very happy because one of the pre-assignments for the class included taking photos and talking about a favourite place in Oulu. My response to that assignment was the Botanical gardens, so I'm very pleased that at least two people took my advice and went to see it.
Later on the same day, I ended up volunteering in decorating a restaurant in Nallikari for the party on Thursday evening. It was fun, although it ended up getting late and getting back home from Nallikari was stressful because I had never been in Nallikari before. Not to mention that I had an 8 AM AV shift the next day, so I was in a hurry to get home so I could get enough rest.
Either way, on Friday morning,
I got to my assigned hall well before the assigned time, but I was still somehow not the first in it. Even the laptop had been set up for me! I did not need to do anything, but I tested the mic and sound anyway. I started the recording and the panel went great. The panel was very interesting! I especially liked the talk about how the horse chestnut tree has been talked about in Finnish newspapers and how attitudes towards it have shifted with time. Especially during the Winter War, when it was questioned how useful the tree even is, when times are tight and you cannot use horse chestnut wood for furniture, food or even firewood. It highlighted to me how everything affects everything and gave me a moment of deep affection towards the humanities and history.
After the panel, I went to the reception desk, where I ended up calling a cab for someone who didn't speak Finnish. I also went to listen to a panel about the sustainability of tourism (which was very interesting too!) before I went home.
As I walked home from the panel, I started to feel a little melancholic. I realised how much fun I had had during the week doing the various tasks and talking to people. Normally, I would have been downright exhausted after a whole week of socialising, but for some reason, I didn't feel any of that on that Friday. I had to tell myself "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" several times LOL
So in summary, what I got out of volunteering at the conference was experience and practice. Experience in customer service, spontaneity, stress resistance and changing my plans on the fly. Practice in speaking English (which I get surprisingly rarely!), social skills and team working skills. So I got exactly what I hoped to get, although I wish I could have networked a little more. My studies have been very solitary and stressful ever since 2020, so it was immensely fun and gratifying to do something in real life with other people, especially when it is something as tangible as this. This was an extremely positive experience for me, and I am very glad I decided to join the volunteer team. I would not have missed this for the world. Even if I did not have the time to listen to many of the panels (I will have to keep an eye out on the recordings of the few panels that sounded interesting, but missed), I'm extremely satisfied with my experience in volunteering. Volunteering at the conference is one of the last things I do at the university before I (hopefully) graduate later this month, so I'm glad that I am ending my university studies with such a grand note and a good experience.
