Hey y’all! I’m happy to announce the DNAD Valentine’s Week 3! The theme is: 

FLUFF VS ANGST

The dates are February 13th-19th, 2023. To participate, please tag your posts as #dnadvalentines2023. To submit your prompt to either the TEAM FLUFF or TEAM ANGST competition, please add #dnadteamfluff23 and #dnadteamangst23. You can create for both teams / combine prompts / make your own prompts, etc. It’s free game! The teams are to track whether there will be more FLUFF or ANGST this Valentine’s season.

Fandom: Original Work Rating: Teen and Up Audiences Word Count: 1302 Summary: After Tiernay supposedly murders her father, she is given to their enemy for marriage as her punishment, and as a trade to get her brother back. Tiernay is leaving home. A/N: This is part of an original story that's been stuck in my head since 2014.

Podge is Tiernay's domesticated bear. The domesticated bears are smaller than wild bears, their fur is fluffier/softer, they have smaller teeth, and their teeth are more blunt. Tiernay couldn’t help it—she looked back through the curtain as the carriage began to move. Behind here were row after row of lightly-armored soldiers on horses, a man in front flying a blue banner featuring a wolf’s head. This wasn’t her banner, Dúgáel’s banner. This was their enemies’, the Nordrith. This blue signaled danger, and in the past had called her forces to fight. 

She eyed the stocky horses, and even they were strange to her—they possessed thicker fur than the ones she was used to, a trait indicative of the colder weather that lay ahead of her.

She looked past them, to her silver city of Lothian, towers rising against the green mountains of Imlir. Angling her head, almost till her neck hurt, she thought she could see the castle, her home. And was that a sparkle of the blue waters it lay upon?

Face crumpling, she wondered if Podge was being held somewhere, waiting for her return. Had he been fed while she had spent weeks in a dungeon? Had anyone decided to care for him? Did he think she had abandoned him?

Oh gods. No. Was he even alive?

That thought alone had her muscles tensing, and she told them to still, to not try to run. She wouldn’t even make it out of the carriage.

Still a whimpering grew in her head. Podge.

The waters disappeared, and she felt what was somehow left of her chip away.

Her new home would still have a view of those waters, of the Mor Yriann Sea, but what would they be like? They were on the edge of the Achranah—vast waters that went beyond lands she knew. Her home would be near dark cliff sides, unescapable, the sea surely angry and foamy below, whereas she knew it as gentle, most times.

Her stomach churned thinking of what awaited her, of the marriage she was forced into. The family who betrayed her.

An ache grew in her throat, and her eyes pricked and nearly flooded over with tears. Her home now blurry behind her, she let the curtain fall back, and she resumed her seat. Besides, was it really her home anymore? Home was where you were wanted, where you were safe, where you were fought for.

Instead, her own mother had called her a murderer.

Oh, her father!

Dead. Dead. Just like her sister. At least she hadn’t raised a hand against her sister.

No, that wasn’t me who killed my father! It couldn’t be.

Yet images flashed in her head of blood splattering on her, of her father looking at her, confused, hurt, as he brought his hands up to his now-bloody throat. He fell, and he couldn’t stop his blood from leaving his body.

He struggled to speak, maybe to say her name, maybe to ask why, why, how could you do this to me?

And Tiernay wasn’t in control of her body. She tried to move, to cry, even, and she just stood there, someone else’s dagger in hand, covered in her father’s blood, watching as it coated the stone floor, the puddle growing larger and larger. How could that much blood truly be in someone’s body?

She couldn’t breathe.

A slight pain made itself known to her, and through the ringing she just noticed was in her ears she thought someone was calling her name.

There was only one other person in that damned carriage with her.

A man’s hand was on her knee.

Tiernay pulled back, realizing where she was: in a carriage with her soon-to-be husband.

She had gotten one hand under her sleeve, nails digging into the skin of her forearm. She pulled it away, clenching her fist instead.

A tear fell, and she tried to dry her eyes before any more did so.

Her knee burned where that large hand was still on her. She wasn’t sure if she could ask him to remove it.

“Are you all right?”

Caradoc, King of Nordrith, gave her a gentle smile. Yet his lips weren’t lifted all the way, most of his face not adding itself to that smile. His blue eyes seemed dark, somehow—dark with intentions she could only guess at. This was her enemy, her family’s enemy. They’d been fighting for over a hundred years, and here she was in a carriage with him because her family had abandoned her. He was tall, and slim—slimmer than the men of Dúgáel tended to be—and with long hair of gold, a shaven face (yet another oddity to her), she supposed he could be attractive. He probably was to his own people, but she knew she would never feel that. At all. Not just because he had held her brother captive, even taken one of his fingers with his signet ring and sent it to them in an oaken box, not just because of how many of their soldiers he’d killed in battle, or how many of her own men he’d ordered to die, how many families he left without fathers, brothers, and sons, but because of one simple thing: he was a man.

Tiernay stared down at the hand on her knee, unable to swallow. Saliva built up in her mouth.

This was to be her husband. This cruel man.

And she was alone. So alone.

With a pang in her chest, Tiernay thought of Saoirse—with her brown curls, and blue eyes, eyes that were much sweeter than Caradoc’s. Tiernay had once wished she could count every freckle on her face, perhaps every freckle hidden beneath her dresses too, strewn like stars across her creamy skin. Would she have laughed at the touch of her lips as they tickled her?

How long would it take Saoirse to laugh again now that Tiernay was gone? Would it have the same wild abandon that so often got her in trouble during her lessons? Would she still look for Tiernay through the bakery window as she helped her father’s customers up front?

No, she thought with a bitterness in her heart. Kayne would be there for her now.

They hadn’t even let Tiernay see her brother before she left. He’d been returned to them, and now what would he think of her? Tiernay, the murderer. Would he try to assassinate her now that he could take his rightful place on the throne? Would he curse her name with every breath? Tiernay wished she could tell Caradoc to stop touching her, but perhaps she deserved it. She was bitter and broken inside. Her older sister was dead of a strange, prolonged illness. Her father was dead by her hands… somehow, and Kayne would be king, and she’d never see him again; maybe at court functions, but she could imagine his accusatory glare.

She was alone, abandoned to this awful man, a man twice her age.

Tiernay held in her tears, willing all of her to dry up, to hide.

It didn’t quite work, but perhaps someday soon it would. She hoped so. The pain, the loneliness, was just too much.

As she sat there she wanted to die. How could someone hurt so much and yet their heart kept pumping? How could that hurt not seep into all of her and kill her? How was she screaming and beating against herself inside and her outside barely moved? How was this her world, her life?

With everything a confusing blur in her head, she forced a smile with trembling cheeks, and lied to her future husband, “I’m fine.”

The road stayed smooth for now, but by nightfall it’d become more of a wide, dirt track. By nightfall her city would be behind her, and so would her family who didn’t want her.

Home was behind, and she didn’t want to know what lay ahead.

Storytelling for shits and giggles

Figured with all the stuff that's been going on I should probably make a proper pinned post for those of my new followers who are not, miraculously, bots.

So yeah, hi, Master of Records here, and I love storytelling in various forms, from running Pathfinder and other TTRPG games to translation and to writing.

Translations:

I currently translate the White Cat Legend manhua (and sometimes donghua) over at @whitecatlegend. A story of political intrigue and Tang dynasty court drama inspired by the real historical events of Wu Zetian's reign - come check it out, it's a good (if more than occasionally bloody) time.

I'm also slowly making my way through the end-cards of The Ravages of Time donghua and the related historical notes on the episodes. Here's a masterlist for that, there is plenty of fun stuff about the Late Han and the Three Kingdoms period even unrelated to the donghua!

I don't have as much time for it these days, but I occasionally write some stuff based on the big Pathfinder campaign I ran for over two years for my friends. Check out my Angstober 2022 and Angstober 2023 masterlists for that!

I've had the pleasure of writing the script for a wonderful gay vampire visual novel Once upon a Stormy Night as a part of Weird Birds Studio. Check it out - the character art is gorgeous, and even if I didn't have the time to write the scene of the cat familiar cheating at cards, I did write the polyamorous ending.

Jamil had always found Azul's attention annoying, but after the overblotting incident the merman became downright insufferable.

That's when Professor Crewel gives them a group assignment. How much can change in two weeks? A lot, apparently, and what was supposed to be a simple alchemy project turns into something more complicated, involving a heist, personal drama, good food and surprising revelations, not necessarily in that order.

One caring gesture at a time, feelings grow.

December 5, 2023.

It was the last day of Bali Jatra.

Puchu returned from her Nani's house on Sunday. So I had taken her to Bali Jatra on Monday.

On Tuesday, we all went. By all I mean, my mom, brother, sil, Puchu and me.

I bought a dream catcher for my room, idols of Lakshmi, Saraswati and Ganesh and two oxidised metal necklaces.

I also bought a mor pankh (peacock feather). Tbh, I am not sure if it's real, even though the vendor swore it is. I find it cute and going to use it as bookmark.

I had biriyani, smoky mocktail and malai kulfi, the one cut into pieces and served with extra malai on top of it. That is my favourite kulfi.

When I was a kid, I used to wait for the kulfi wala for that kulfi. He used to come pushing a cart and had the kulfi in a big matka (earthen pot). The Crystal Tower stood tall against the skies of Mor Dhona. The Allagan construction happened to be the focus this day as Dia finished her trip into the Labyrinth of the Ancients. Rammbroes already told her to take a break and told a certain miqo'te not to interfere further.

He didn't tell her not to interfere with him, however.

G'raha went off to sulk somewhere as a response, and she simply had to interrupt his gloom. She found him sitting on a rock cataloguing everything that occurred.

"Hey, G'raha."

He stopped, turned around, and paid special attention to her. "Ah, tell me you've managed to convince Rammbroes that I simply must explore the tower with you."

"No."

"I see. That's unfortunate. What brings you to me then?"

"Your invisibility spell."

"My invisibility spell?"

Dia nodded. "I want it."

G'raha couldn't help but laugh at the idea. "Oh, certainly, that's why you're here."

"That's right. Teach it to me."

G'raha smirked condescendingly. "To master such an art requires immense study in aetherial manipulation, and I simply cannot pass on the art to someone untrained."

"Manipulation, you say?"

"Aye."

"You mean like this?"

The rock that G'raha used to hold himself up moved to the side and he fell over suddenly.

"Aetherial manipulation's something of a specialty of mine", Dia explained with her own smirk.

G'raha stood up, wiping off dirt from his clothes. "Well, moving rocks is fine and good, but any conjurer could do something like that."

He began stepping upwards, using the aether in the air as stepping stones. "The level of aether manipulation required to make your form invisible to the naked eye takes an understanding of aether on a molecular level. While you're a fine arcanist, this I doubt not in the least, there are aspects to what I do that would take decades of research to grasp fully."

With her training in spatial manipulation, she made her form appear positively giant in front of G'raha, as though someone took her form and put it under a microscope. "Yeah? Aspects like what?"

This stunned him off of his balance and he just managed to land on his feet with a feather fall spell. "By the Twelve..."

"Like what you see?"

Slowly, he reached his hand out to try to touch the giant Dia only for his hand to slip through her illusion.

"Now skip the pretense and show me your invisibility spell", she demanded calmly as she stood behind him. He quickly turned around with a shocked look on his face. Quickly, he shook it off and showed an indignant face.

"Well, if you've already attained this level of awareness of aether manipulation, why do you ask me?"

"Because you're doing something different. I know how to manipulate the space around me, but not in a way where I can make it so I'm not visible. That's where I need to see what you're doing."

"Hm." G'raha kicked the dirt beneath him. "Well...tell you what, we can resolve this, I believe, with a simple race."

"A race? Why the games?"

"Simple. I love games." G'raha pointed out a spot over in the distance northeast of where they stood where crystals and the remains of an old cave system gathered above a pool of water. "If you can beat me, I shall share all that I know."

"Using what methods?"

"Methods?"

"If you like games, then surely, you like setting up the rules for them."

G'raha chuckled. "You would be right. All is fair here."

"Very well. On the count of 'start', then?"

They looked to each other. Staring intently into each other's eyes, each waiting for the other to make their move.

"1-2-3-go!"

With G'raha's hasty countdown did the two of them immediately cast spells to up their speed. Neither of them could teleport with magic alone with the help of aetherytes, so it was a matter of speed. Down the eastern path they went, running as fast as they could until finally, Dia found herself in the crystalized area alone. She looked around trying to find her opponent, but no one was near.

"Good job. Now find me."

The disembodied voice beckoned her from somewhere.

"Oh, gods' sakes. Did I lose?"

"This is what I promised. If you beat me, I would teach it to you. Now use your skills to find me."

Dia groaned. At first, she thought she would take a slow approach, feeling out G'raha to find her. About five minutes of slowly searching later with no luck, she took a different approach.

"Okay, so chances are you went somewhere that I couldn't easily reach."

He said nothing.

"All right. You're insistent that it's a matter of spatial manipulation. That's my specialty. So...let's play manipulator."

Using her own skills, she bent the space around her to search closely. The space grew larger and smaller, wider and thinner, solid and liquid and gaseous. If she was to find him, she was going to have to think outside the box. Finally, it hit her.

"You're not using the aether around you to hide yourself."

She reached out a hand in the space ahead of her, grabbed the Miqo'te from nowhere, and pulled.

"You're cloaking your own aether to match your surroundings."

G'raha smiled. "Excellent work."

"You realize how dangerous that is to your own form, yes?"

"Yet I'm still here."

"Unbelievable."

"But if you don't wish to do such a thing, you need not endanger yourself."

Dia smirked. "No way. I finally figured it out, and you think I won't try to use it for myself?"

In a moment, Dia's form faded into the aether in front of G'raha's eyes. He joined her in her cloaking.

"Wanna pull a prank on Cid with me?" Dia asked.

"Perhaps tomorrow. For now, it might be better if we call it here."

Lotus brought EG one step closer to completing their full redemption arc, and the team’s in-game leader led his team to perfection while also capitalizing on his individual success. His team was coordinated, reading PRX’s strategies like a book and fighting back with clever rotates of their own.
