As Guts runs to Griffith’s cell, he starts to describe Griffith but the next image shows a scene that contradicts Guts’ idea of him.
Tumblr media
“Composed, ruthless, shrewd”
Then there’s a scene in which Griffith confesses saving Guts for no reason. Not because he planned it, not because he intended it. Griffith saved Guts out of the spur of the moment. A decision that risked the safety of the band.
“Always winning, always taking”
And yet, the next image is Griffith questioning at what cost he obtains these things and what they make of him.
This whole panel shows the conflict between Guts’ perception of Griffith and those moments Griffith didn’t fit that perception or showed a different side of himself. In the last image we see Guts struggling to reconcile his thoughts about Griffith and his memories of those two instances.
This struggle didn’t exist before the Primrose speech. When Guts heard Griffith admit he didn’t need a reason to save him, Guts was happy and embraced the idea of Griffith doing something for his sake. He could conceive the idea of Griffith being more than that perfect, curated image and he was fond of that idea.
Of course the Primrose speech changed all of that. At the end the speech is a confirmation of Guts’ trauma which echoes and informs his perception of Griffith after it. “Composed, ruthless, shrewd” (just like Gambino was) “I’m not his friend” (just like I wasn’t Gambino’s son). Guts is tragic because he can’t distinguish between Griffith’s performance and Griffith’s actual feelings (that Griffith has shown him, multiple times). To be fair Guts' failure is justified. He has a history of people betraying his trust after they seemed to give a shit, so why would Griffith be any different? But I don’t think we are justified as an audience. The clues are there, and it becomes extensively clear that Griffith being cold and ruthless is not true. We, as an audience, are not justified to believe Griffith doesn't care because until that point in time, we should’ve been able to spot the contradictions and realize the conflict between Griffith's words and Griffith's actions.
To be honest I wasn’t being fair to Guts a couple of paragraphs ago. Let's see what he thinks in the next panel.
Tumblr media
Supposing I'm right about these two panels, then another way to interpret Guts' line is "If what Casca said is true, if that's the case. Then I was wrong about Griffith."
Guts, despite the baggage of his trauma, can still harbor enough hope that Griffith cares about him.
I can’t understand why a part of the fandom can’t.

so i know i’ve mentioned why i haven’t been active lately. i simply..... don’t have the motivation or energy to write. i barely have the motivation to get out of bed sometimes. once i move back to college for my last year in about a month i will be seeking therapy, so i’m getting that sorted out, don’t worry.
but i woke up today and saw that haruma miura, nick’s fc and an actor that i legitimately enjoyed watching, has died (initial reports say via suicide). my heart hurts. yes he was a talented actor, yes he was a talented singer, but above all he seemed like a genuinely nice person.
and now i don’t know what to do. he so perfectly captured nick’s essence, but i understand that some people are uncomfortable with deceased fcs and it may be better to change fcs out of respect. i’ve never had to navigate this territory before so any advice y’all have to give would be helpful. i’m also still not coming back for a while as i mentioned before, but i’m looking to maybe get back into writing to have something to do on weekends once i get back to college since everything has been shitcanned so far.
anyways sorry if this is a long read but i needed to write it. thanks and i love you all
