Summary: You've had a panic attack; first one in a while, and Mav was there for you.

TWs: A detailed description of a panic attack

A/N: If anyone was curious, the dog's name is Rosa, she's a brown border collie with hazel eyes, and she was outside, in the garden, while the reader was having a panic attack. Also - Mav and Reader have been married for quite a while.

It was happening again.

It was so long since the last time, that at first, you didn't even catch it in time, because it always started small and the last one was so long ago that you genuinely thought you were over it, yet something triggered you again and you didn't even know what.

At first, your hands and feet were feeling just a little bit colder, but it was the end of March and you were spending your day outside, so that's probably why. And earlier you did some work in the garden, that's why your hands were shaking and twitching, you were just tired, nothing else. But when that big ball started to slowly form in your throat, you knew something was wrong, but maybe, just maybe... it was the beginning of a cold and you were misinterpreting the sore throat, but by now it was already too late, and a huge wave of exhaustion hit you like a train, but it didn't make you tired, instead you went into the hyper-awareness mode, yet your vision started to tunnel. All your muscles tensed so harshly that you almost weren't able to move and you just slumped on the kitchen floor, not noticing the stream of tears flowing on your face. With shaking fingers you weren't even able to unlock your phone to call your husband, and at this moment you were so thankful that Rooster forced you to add your fingerprint as an option to unlock your phone.

You hit the big number 2 on speed dial and spent the next hour listening to the long and pitchy signal... Or maybe it was only a few seconds, you truly couldn't tell. Time seemed to change the way it always flowed. Maybe that's what it meant...? Being able to see your whole life flash before your eyes because it took so fucking long to get from one second to another.

But when you finally heard a voice on the other side of the phone, you almost started hyperventilating, because it wasn't the voice you were expecting.

- Pete... - you said pleadingly - I need Pete... - your voice was somehow louder than a scream in your own head, yet only a broken whisper came out of your mouth. Or maybe it was the other way around...?

- He's in the air right now. Are you ok, y/n...? - you knew that voice, but that didn't help.

- Cyclone... I need him... - you were sure that he realized you were crying and obviously something was wrong, but he didn't ask again, clear desperation in your voice forcing him to act.

- Just a second, I'll patch you through the comms. - he finally said while you were barely registering what was happening. There were other voices in the background, but all of them became a hostile hum that was agitating you even more. - You're direct with him now, y/n. - the relief almost pushed you even deeper into the panic attack, but fortunately, you managed to stay somewhat afloat on the surface of your consciousness.

- Pete... - your voice was raspy and desperate, and that one word was enough for him to realize what was happening.

- How far? - he asked and you could feel the tenseness in his voice and you sobbed even harder. You hated that feeling of helplessness, that you're body at times just... didn't belong to you.

- Far... - you weren't able to say anything more.

- I'm coming back right now. Can you stay on the line...? - you wanted to answer, you really did, but that simple interaction finally took you out completely, and you were only able to sob, curled up on the floor, hidden under the kitchen island. You recognized that he was still talking to you and his voice helped you not spiral even deeper into your own mind. Words stopped having meaning, so you had no idea what he was saying and how long it all took, but suddenly there was a warm body sitting on the floor behind you, pulling you harshly into its embrace, caging you with arms and legs.

- I'm here, I'm here... Everything will be fine... You're not in any danger. - Mav started roughly rubbing your arms to stimulate circulation to warm your frozen limbs. You wanted to thank him, to scream, to do literally anything else, but you just... couldn't. You were locked in your body as if you were a stranger looking through its eyes. - Come on, princess... 5 things... Or even just one, to kick off... - He pleaded, trying to break through to you, now gently swaying you both back and forth. You knew what he meant. It wasn't your first rodeo, but oh how you wished that it was your last.

- I feel... - ...like I'm dying. But that was not the right thing to say now, even if that thought occupied 90% of your brain. Pete squeezed your whole body a bit harder as if he wanted to somehow jumpstart your nervous system. - ...the clothing tag scratching into my neck. - just saying that knocked all air out of your lungs, yet that didn't stop the sobs and hiccups from coming...

- Good, that was very good, princess... - he sounded genuinely proud, and that helped to begin to ground you. - What else...? - he asked, squeezing you in between his limbs again.

- I feel your breath on my skin... - you continued with a shaky voice, your whole body still trembling, but what you said was true. Mav's warm breath was gently hugging the back of your neck with his every exhale.

- Amazing, you're doing so well... What else...? - he didn't stop rubbing your skin, and you weren't sure if just his presence wasn't doing a better job than your exercise.

- I feel cold tiles under my ass... - you replied, and this time it took you a little bit shorter than the previous one. It became easier to focus and you were able to start controlling your sobs a little bit. They were still happening but in a more regular and slow rhythm.

- Over halfway there... - he squeezed your whole body, and only now you've realized how much strength he was using to bring you back. It hurt, but it was helping... Or maybe it was helping because it hurt? Right now, it didn't matter.

- I feel your dog tags on my back... - It was hard not to feel them when you finally realized how strongly he was holding you and how little was separating your bodies. With every small thing you noticed, it was easier to notice the next one. You finally moved your right hand and intertwined it with his left. - And I feel our wedding ring on your finger... - Pete couldn't help but chuckle just a little. You still weren't out of the warzone, but at least you weren't convinced you were going to die. - I see how dirty our kitchen window is... - you felt him vibrating from laughter he tried not to let out. - I see one Mr. Grumbles sticking from under the couch... - Mr. Grumbles was an elephant plushie that was your dog's first toy. She wasn't playing with it as much as she used to, but god forbid someone tried to move it. - I see my dirty gardening gloves on the windowsill. - you didn't need more motivation to ground yourself more, but it was still good to feel Mav's strong arms holding you for dear life. - I see our new coffee table still in the box. - it came almost a week ago, and you both promised that you were going to assemble it, but when it actually came to doing anything together, other things just sounded more... fun. - And I see that apparently, I broke my screen again... - you didn't even realize when it happened, because you could have sworn that when you were dialing Pete, it was still in one piece, but you weren't one hundred percent sure. Maybe it broke when it fell to the floor? That's why you had such a hard time unlocking it with a password. You sighed loudly, officially saying goodbye to broken sobs. You've felt extremely tired, and you were able to actually feel that because your body started to relax into the one behind you.

- Do you want to tell me what you hear as well...? - he wasn't sure if you needed another thing to ground you, and when you shook your head for no, he finally released you from your temporary prison and scooped you up, making sure neither of you will hit your heads on the counter. Mav didn't ask what else you needed right now, because he knew from experience what worked best. He also knew that if he asked you what you needed, you might freeze again, overwhelmed by all the possible options.

When you got to the upstairs bathroom, he finally let your feet touch the ground. He didn't want to let you go, but he needed to run the bathtub. He also added a few drops of pine and spruce-scented oils, because he knew that those were your favorite and right now you needed all the comfort you could get. You started to undress, but he was next to you in a second, helping you with your shoes. Usually, you didn't wear them at home, but when the panic started to settle in, you lost your usual train of thought. He also helped you with your shorts and underwear, and when you were naked, he helped you get into the bathtub.

The water was scorching hot and you finally smiled; it was exactly how you liked it. Pete quickly joined you in the bathtub, getting in behind you, so that when you sat down, you were able to lean into his body.

He was there for you during good and bad times, and he was perfect in both. Right now he was gently massaging your sore muscles, starting from your neck and moving to the back, arms... Even forearms and hands got the same treatment. Due to your position, he wasn't able to reach your legs, but you got the feeling he will get to them later... Right now he reclined as much as he could and submerged your hair and scalp under water, paying close attention, so the water wouldn't get into your eyes. He even washed and conditioned your hair, gently massaging your scalp and you were so grateful that he understood exactly what you were going through because there were times when the roles were reversed, and he was the one breaking down in your arms and you loved those moments too. Well, you didn't love that they were happening, but you were happy that both of you found someone who understood the coping mechanisms, grounding techniques, and why they were needed; to put it shortly, you both found the best support you possibly could, to get to the other side of those harder moments unscathed.

- Thank you... - you finally said on the exhale. With every passing moment, you were more and more yourself. - And I'm sorry I made such a mess... - if your skin wasn't already bright red from the water temperature, the blush that visited your cheeks would definitely be more than noticeable.

- Either I've somehow accidentally called Simpson...

- You didn't... - he smiled. - I usually leave my phone in the training room when I'm in the air, and everyone knows that if you're the one calling - they have to answer. - now you were even more embarrassed. On the other hand, you almost never called anyone, so there was no harm in that, and it also meant that when you were indeed calling instead of texting - there was an emergency. - And I'm glad that I've implemented that rule, but also... - the unasked question hung in the air suspended on the heavy steam slowly rising from the bathtub.

- To be honest, I don't know... I thought I've put it behind me, but I guess this type of trauma is bound to resurface from time to time... Thank you for dropping everything, and being there for me. - you turned your head a bit and placed a small kiss on his arm. - Next time, if there will be a next time, I will be more careful with the signs, because... I was having such a great day in the garden, that I totally ignored them all until it was too late. - you sighed heavily and put your arm around his left thigh.

- Oh yeah...? Then tell me what did you do today... - he requested, a huge smile beaming on his face. Mav loved listening to your voice, so you started to explain how you've prepared the raised beds, so Rosa wouldn't be able to get to them as easily and dig out the seeds and bulbs; how you've prepared the soil mix, and which veggies you've chosen for each bed and why. You've also explained that you planned on doing an herb spiral after you'll finish your current project, and with undisguised joy explained why each herb had to plant in a specific place in the spiral. You even found some recycled materials to help you build it, so you were more than prepared, and what was more important - you were happy.

Books I've read in 2025

(there are short shitty reviews mostly to remind myself what I thought about them, not as like, a rec)

My goal of reducing my shelves of shame to a singular shelf of shame is going well! I'm gonna update the list every ten books, I think. This January's reading productivity has been sponsored by shitty things happening at work that I desperately wanted to stop thinking about 🙃

1-10

1. Frieren n.1 - Kanehito Yamada & Tsukasa Abe: I read it at my best friend's home. I'd heard from a bunch of people that I should check it out if I liked dunmeshi, and they were right, I liked it too! Big fan of the exploration of friendships between people of differing lifespans. I will read more issues if I get the chance.

2. The Mighty Nein Origins: Caduceus Clay - Wells, Espiritu, Mercer, Jaffe: I love my pink boy. My wife got me this book. The artwork was GORGEOUS, and I liked the story, even if it was a little short.

3. The eye of the world (The Wheel of Time 1) - Robert Jordan: Dad got me the first three books, because we have been watching the show together over skype. I was happy to have watched it first, because I think I would have had a harder time getting into the world otherwise. It's nice to read some long-form fantasy, I've rarely read this kind of thing. My favourite part was how Rand kept thinking "if only Perrin was here, he would know how to deal with girls" only for the focus to shift to Perrin and have him have the same thought but about Rand. And Loial! Really liked him in the book.

4. Fuego Queer - Ed Meat & Rita "Bo" Brown: A nonfiction I got at a book fair in the anarchist booth, about the George Jackson Brigade and the Men Against Sexism carceral group. A very interesting read, about something that I knew very little about.

5. Bury Your Gays - Chuck Tingle: My mom gifted me a coupon for my favourite fantasy & scifi bookshop (where I got my last Tingler) and I went to get this specifically. I read this in one day, I stayed up late to finish it, it was really fucking good. Going back to my roots of horror books, and Tinglers are fucking awesome.

6. Marburg - Guillem Clua: This is a play I saw 15 years ago, by a Catalan playwright that my mom and I like. I found it a little bit ridiculous at times, but I think it's because you're supposed to watch it live, otherwise it's too dramatic. Cannot describe why, but it reeks of Catalan theatre (and I love that, don't get me wrong), something I miss watching since I moved to Finland over eight years ago, so it was kinda nostalgic. The play also had one of my favourite Catalan stage actors, Eduard Farelo.

7. The Year Of The Flood - Margaret Atwood: I like this author, and especially her dystopias, which this was. Very different from what I imagined it would be from the blurb, but I still liked it. Loved all the "I don't actually believe in this cult" from people who very much believed in it.

8. El viatge de Shuna - Hayao Miyazaki: Got it for Christmas last year, I think, from my dad. It was a short read, but very beautiful. Very reminiscent of Nausicäa.

9. Ghostwritten - David Mitchell: His first novel! I got it from a secondhand shop. There were a couple of cameos of characters from Cloud Atlas. It was essentially nine different stories, and I liked some more than others, but it was cool how it was all part of a whole while kinda jumping between genres.

10. Quatro relatos - Rosa Pérez Antón: I got four short stories from this author at the three wise men fair when I was in Barcelona. She had several to choose from, and we talked a bit about what I liked and she recommended specific ones. I liked some more than others, but she inspired me to do my own thing, since she publishes and binds her own stuff creatively. There is a certain naiveté in what she writes, but it's the vulnerability of putting yourself out there as you are, and I respect that.

BLACK WOMEN IN THE WARTIME STRUGGLE

Black women were on the frontlines of civil rights activism during the war years.

The grassroots organizing work of young leaders like Juanita Jackson, Ella Baker and Rosa Parks helped fuel a dramatic increase in NAACP membership and branch activism. Union organizers like Dollie Lowther Robinson and Maida Springer labored to ensure workers’ rights. Black women also engaged in direct-action protests against segregation like Pauli Murray’s 1940 arrest for sitting in the whites-only section of a bus in Virginia.

More than half a million Black women left farm and domestic work for better-paying jobs in wartime shipyards and defense factories. But they had to struggle against employers who refused to hire Black women (or confined them to menial jobs) and white employees who resisted working alongside them.

Black women also overcame determined opposition to enter the armed services. Mary McLeod Bethune served as a special assistant in the War Department and worked with the National Council of Negro Women and Eleanor Roosevelt to open the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) to Black recruits. Eventually, 6,500 served. Bethune also lobbied successfully for officer appointments. Still, Black WACs served in segregated units and were often assigned low-skilled work. The Army also limited the number of Black nurses and restricted them to segregated hospitals. Conditions in the Navy were even worse. Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox opposed the entry of Black women into the service’s women’s auxiliary (WAVES). They were only admitted after his death in 1944.

African American women also took on the then taboo subject of sexual violence. Sexual assaults on Black women by white men were a parallel offense to the lynchings of Black men. A 1944 Alabama rape case involving Recy Taylor sparked an NAACP investigation by Rosa Parks and widespread publicity. The Committee for Equal Justice, organized by Parks, led a national protest drive to bring the seven, armed white rapists to justice. Its allies included the Southern Negro Youth Congress (SNYC), described by historian Erik McDuffie as “the shock troops for Black equality across the Jim Crow South during the war.” The SNYC conducted wartime campaigns for desegregation and voting and labor rights. Its leadership included women like Rose Mae Catchings and Sallye Bell Davis, mother of activist Angela Davis.

The Best Album Per Year for Sixty Years

No-one asked for it, of course, but I do like making lists, so here's me pondering what have been the best Long Players in the album artform the past 60 years. I originally tried to keep it to just one per year, but many years that proved impossible: when listing multiple albums I have tried ranking them with the one I feel narrowly edges out the others first, and I use lower case to indicate an album that is not at the same level as others on the list but was the best I've heard from that time.
