Mister Miracle (2017) #5 comic review
It’s the last day of Mister Miracles life and there’s no way he’d rather spend it than side-by-side with his mighty bride, Big Barda. The fifth issue of Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Mister Miracle mainly consists of Scott and Barda doing stuff together as a couple and it’s delightful. Though the specter of Scott’s on-coming execution hangs over the proceedings the entire time.
[Full review under the cut]
Before I dig into the best stuff about this issue, I’m going to talk about Funky Flashman. As I’ve mentioned before in these reviews, the Fourth World comics were the first major project Jack Kirby did for DC Comics in the 70s after Marvel refused to let him negotiate a better deal for his contract with them. Obviously, there was well-earned bitterness on Kirby’s part and he expressed some of that through Funky Flashman, a caricature of Stan Lee. Flashman was introduced as a classic con-man, a big talker with little substance behind his big proclamations. (There’s apocryphal tales that Stan Lee was so stunned by Kirby’s satire of him that it’s the reason he switched from a beard to a mustache in the 70s.) In this issue, he’s the official PR man managing the relationship between the gods of New Genesis and humanity. His first line in the issue is even, “Hey, True Believers!” He’s looking for a way to sell the execution of Mister Miracle in a way that doesn’t damage the New Gods’ relationship with Earth, deciding on marketing it as the super escape artist’s second attempt at escaping from death after his suicide attempt that kicked off the series.
The main feature of this issue is the time that Scott and Barda spend together before he’s set to be executed by Orion. This issue consists of the stuff I want most out of any book featuring the Frees, showing them spend time together as a couple away from any cosmic shenanigans. Before anything else in this issue, we see a conversation they have in narrative captions about how Scott is willing to go to war with Orion if she only tells him to stay. She tells him that it’s his life, so he needs to choose what happens next. After that, she asks how he wants to spend his last day and their time together starts with an intimate night together. (Unsurprisingly, the super escape artist is into bondage.) They spend the next day stuck in traffic, talking about their cat’s health, eating at Scott’s favorite diner, seeing some sights, spending time at a carnival trying to win a prize for Barda and finally attempting to stargaze with the lights of the city below blotting out the night sky.
In the middle of this is Scott going on a rant about the flaws in the tautological nature of some of Descartes’ philosophy. Namely, he brings up how even if “I think therefore I am”, then there no way to be sure of everything else outside of oneself. A person could be a brain in a jar experiencing a simulation for all they knew. Questions about the reality of Scott’s life have been in this series since the first issue and having Scott openly discuss the philosophy of that suggest an awareness of certain unrealities of the present. Gerads’ use of expressions comes into humorous effect in this sequence as Barda slowly nods off during Scott’s rambling about “finding the face of God.”
On the morning of the execution (heralded by a “Darkseid is” panel), Scott goes out to face it suited up in his costume. Before he can go with Funky Flashman and the escorts from New Genesis, Barda takes them all out and says one word to Scott to make her intentions clear, “Stay.”
King and Gerads’ Mister Miracle has felt like a series that’s always improving since issue one. Each successive issue has felt like it’s aimed for something completely different than the previous ones and the it’s always been stellar as a result. Focusing in on Scott and Barda as a couple this issue does a lot to make it my favorite one yet. Seeing them be together and figure out how to spend their last day makes a great hook for everything else in this issue to bounce off. While I joked a little about it earlier, the sex scenes in this issue are tastefully done, focusing more on the intimacy and pleasure than on gratuitous nudity. There’s also a not-so-subtle symbolism to the use of bondage and Barda being the one thing Scott doesn’t want to escape from. Plus, Barda’s switching eye colors are still apparent at different moments, when they’re not being covered up with sunglasses or otherwise obscured. This issue also contains two touching tributes to Jack Kirby himself, one when they see his handprints outside of Grauman’s Chinese Theater with his famous quote “Kid… comics will break your heart” and another when Scott and Barda go to visit Oberon’s grave and it’s shown that his last name was “Kurtzberg”, Jack Kirby’s birth-surname.
The fifth issue of Mister Miracle gives us insight into a couple that are ready to go to war for each other by the end of it. How that battle plays out will have to wait for the next issue, when this series reaches its halfway point.

Happy Easter and Passover
Here are some friends to celebrate with you.
Mr. Terzich wants to wish everyone celebrating either Easter and/or Passover a happy holiday and brought some friends along to party along with you.
Birgir convinces Jacky to replace the Easter Bunny at the local mall because of how much it will benefit her public image. The mayor sure seems happy about it.
Mitch has always preferred to casually celebrate their Jewish heritage, but Sandy…
