Why does everybody hate Jennifer Lopez now?

I could take a few guesses, but let me ramble a little bit.

Okay, so I know Jennifer Lopez as an actress and music performer. In case you've noticed, I didn't call her a singer because that's not exactly her strong suit. However, I do know that she can dance and act. The singing, to me, just seems like more of a feature than the main event in her shows.

But anyway, she has been on the receiving end of a lot of bad press throughout her decades-long career. But it wasn't all bad in the beginning. She was an actress who was getting Golden Globe nominations and was in Oscar talks for her portrayal of Selena Quintanilla in the critically acclaimed musical biopic 'Selena' in the '90s, and she was becoming the queen of rom-coms with her box office hits back in the early 2000s. And during the height of all of that, she was releasing chart-topping singles and albums.

She was dating, then married, then divorced, then dating and married again. Had twins, got divorced, engaged, broke up, engaged again and is now married to an old flame (Ben Affleck) in 2022. But presently, there are rumors of our dear, dear Bennifer divorcing.

Just months ago, she's released films about her love life, her career growth, and new music that isn't exactly performing well. Sure, we can blame it on the fact that she's been at it for over 20 years, but there are other celebrities that have been here for decades too and are still peaking or peaking again and again in their careers (ahem, Beyoncé). Queen Bey has the respect, reverence, legend status, and career that many aspire to have.

Including Jennifer.

Which brings me to the main reason, at least in my view, of why people hate Jennifer Lopez as much as they do lately.

She tries too damn hard.

She wants to be a legend, and she wants, no demands, to be given her flowers now. Instead of letting it happen naturally over time, she wants to be celebrated and revered for her long career in immediate effect. And I suppose that's fair. She has been a staple in pop culture for decades. She'd constantly remind you that Google Images was invented because of a green dress she wore. She's performed at the Super Bowl (with Shakira). She has a net worth of over $400M.

But these documentaries and new releases she keeps giving us feel like she's trying to fast-track it and shove her need to be named a 'legend' down our throats.

But there's a certain level of authenticity that seems to be missing in her recent endeavors.

Perhaps it's the relentless pursuit of validation or the constant need to remind everyone of her past achievements. Whatever the case may be, it's clear that some people are growing tired of it. Moreover, there's another element that has contributed to the negative perception surrounding Lopez: her reputation for being rude to people.

Despite her talent and success, numerous reports and anecdotes have surfaced over the years, painting a picture of Lopez as someone who is difficult to work with and not always pleasant to those around her. One notable incident occurred at the 2024 Met Gala, where Lopez was captured on video being dismissive and rude to a reporter who approached her for an interview. The video quickly went viral, further tarnishing her public image and adding fuel to the criticism against her.

Whether it's stories of diva-like behavior on set or instances of dismissiveness towards fans and colleagues, these accounts have only served to exacerbate the dislike towards her.

Let's swing back to the mention of Beyoncé. It's hard not to draw comparisons between Jennifer Lopez and Queen Bey, especially considering their prominence in pop culture. Beyoncé's career trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric, and she's achieved a level of respect, admiration, and reverence that many in the industry aspire to attain.

Jennifer Lopez, with her own impressive career spanning decades, might find herself in the shadow of Beyoncé's shining star. It's not difficult to imagine that Jennifer could harbour feelings of envy or jealousy towards Beyoncé, seeing how effortlessly Queen Bey commands the attention and adoration of millions worldwide.

She can STILL sell out stadiums instantly (Jennifer has never had a stadium tour, let alone a sold out one), top the charts with both albums and singles, go platinum and multi-platinum still. Break a record a day without doing so much as posting an Instagram link to a surprise project.

And the stark difference?

Beyoncé settles in her legendary status seamlessly. Because he work ethic, talent and results are proven. she keeps her private life private, remains graceful and humble and carries the fuck on with her life.

Indeed, the comparison between Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé is inevitable, considering their parallel journeys in the spotlight. And this isn't me saying that they are on the same level in any way. But I only use Mrs. Knowles-Carter as an example because she too came up around the same time as J-Lo did.

Beyoncé, often hailed as a paragon of grace and professionalism, exudes a sense of authenticity and humility that resonates with audiences worldwide. Her meticulous work ethic and unwavering dedication to her craft have solidified her status as a cultural icon. Unlike Lopez, Beyoncé doesn't seek validation or demand recognition; she lets her artistry speak for itself.

On the other hand, Lopez's relentless pursuit of acclaim sometimes comes across as contrived and insincere. Her propensity for self-promotion and occasional displays of diva behavior have alienated some fans and industry insiders. While her accomplishments are undeniable, the manner in which she navigates her fame often leaves much to be desired.

The recent incident at the Met Gala serves as a microcosm of Lopez's divisive persona. While Beyoncé effortlessly commands the red carpet with her poise and elegance, Lopez's behavior towards a reporter underscores a disconnect between her public image and reality. Such moments only serve to reinforce existing perceptions of her as arrogant and out of touch.

And releasing films about her romance with Ben Affleck, one of which broadcasts his private love letters he sent her years before they finally got married, seems a little...yeah.

She's ambitious and wants to prove herself but forcing it is a huge reason why it's not working.

Age with grace in all things, damn.

In essence, the disdain towards Jennifer Lopez isn't solely rooted in jealousy or resentment but rather a culmination of her actions and public persona. While she undoubtedly possesses talent and charisma, her inability to strike a balance between ambition and authenticity has contributed to her polarizing reputation.

Ouch-ouch-ouch! What have you done now Thåström??! The other night Joakim, not entirely unknown singer of Imperiet, was sitting in the pub Kvarnen on Söder in Stockholm and taking it easy. Kvarnen is the homebase on earth for all Hammarby[= a sports club]-fans and the tension was thick when Sportextra were about to show images from the Hammarby-game the same evening.

The minute before Sportextra is about to start, "Pimme" stands up and switches the channel. "I want to watch Filmkrönikan [The movie chronicle]", he declared. But in some instances it's of no help that you are a super-idol in Sweden. Agitated Bajen[Hammarby]-fans pushed Joakim down on his chair and switched back to the right channel. At Kvarnen Imperiet doesn't have many fans, we guess...

Conclusion: Even though violence between supporters of the three major Stockholm sports teams wasn't uncommon, this is fake news, he was never in any real danger. Portraying him as something of a diva was the thing in 1986, though by the looks of it he was just being a lad for intricate sports guy respect reasons. The Ebba Grön legacy might have been working in his favour, a band considered neutral ground due to consisting of one supporter of each Stockholm team (Thåström-Djurgården, Gurra-Hammarby, Fjodor-AIK Solna). A diversity win, if you will.

But still, not everyone would have been tolerated and gotten away with such insolent behavior at Kvarnen, especially not a patron saint of the enemy!

omg this was so cute. they managed to make it shorter without cutting any major scenes; missed some choruses and ballets, but nothing super jarring. I got both my favorite duets!

Obviously I love that it's two ladies in love and I wish I wasn't shocked about it being portrayed onstage especially this having been performed in 2022. However I will admit there is something to be said about those trouser mezzos in their pants suits. They both give me feels in different and similar and lovely ways.

But when Adrien abruptly leaves and gets a new skating partner, Marinette vows to show him just what he missed out on and become a champion all on her own. Years later, an injury takes Marinette out of the competitive circuit, draining her of sponsors and confidence. Just when she’s about to give up, a certain skater is in need of a new partner and he’s requesting one person: her. If they want to become a gold medal team, they’ll have to work through their grievances or the past will keep them, and their Olympic goals, apart forever.

I’m not a figure skating enthusiast (and I’m Canadian?!), and I don’t know Fettuccine’s experience in the field, but it was written in a way that it was technical enough to be realistic, even based on personal experience, but not technical enough to spend my entire reading time on Google to figure out things. (I’ve been on Google during my reading, mind you, but it was to figure out some puns because my little knowledge in figure skating is in French).

The costumes, the dance, all I could see was Adrien and Marinette on the ice. (My advise: don’t look at it before chapter 28 or 29, it is almost spoilery)

It's been a little too relaxed around here these last few weeks. Very few wars, very few vicious fights among Diva fans. So. We're back to where we began with Bernadette vs. Patti and now Lea Salonga in the pit. If Lea hasn't been tossed back in after losing to Christine Baranski Round One, I'm confident my beloved Kelli O'Hara would have made it to Round 4 (and then been summarily eviscerated by Bernadette). So, to avenge my darling blonde soprano (a dying breed), here she is boys, here she is world, here's Patti.

Seven-time Tony nominee, two-time winner Bernadette Peters (1948) has a sixty-plus year stage career of monumental proportions. Considered the foremost Sondheim interpreter, their collaborative works include Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Gypsy (2003), and Follies (2011). Everyone’s favourite Satanic metal group are at the height of their powers right now. If you couldn’t tell by the huge spike in their popularity, it’s evident in the confidence – arrogance, even – of the latest incarnation of frontman Papa Emeritus. Tobias Forge’s devilish diva is brimming with Ego on the group’s fifth album, from the patriotic call-to-arms of Kaisarion to the Disney-Villain antics of Twenties. But that swagger betrays a rot at the heart of IMPERA’s imagined empire. Beneath the righteous glory and titanic industries of ‘progress’, the people at the epicentre of this empire still can’t walk home safely at night. That’s the stark message hiding on this album - and it’s Forge’s ability to be so incisive in spite of the silliness of Ghost’s premise, that cements this project as one of metal’s most engaging.

When you know that no pop artist does fun quite like Carly Rae Jepsen, an album name like this might lead you to believe her latest album is more sombre than usual. There’s some truth to that – the moodiness of tracks like Joshua Tree and Talking to Yourself are a new turn for the Canadian queen, as is the laidback softness of Western Wind. The most successful divergence from her usual style is the heart-breaking faux-country breakup track Go Find Yourself Or Whatever. But make no mistake; joy is still the defining ethos of Jepsen’s material, despite the circumstances, and the euphoria that she brings on this record is second to none. Because she’s right; we really have had the loneliest time. But what’s the point in not dancing and being in love anyway?

The last few years have been no stranger to incisive social commentary, but in my opinion there’s a key element to our modern age that’s missing from a lot of attempts to figure out what’s going on: how completely absurd it all is. Enter Viagra Boys’ bizarre post-punk magnum opus, to tackle the insanity of our times head-on. The humour of the affair adds a necessary bite to the band’s commentary – it would come off as absurd if it weren’t such a perfect reflection of the experience of scrolling through online opinion pieces. It’s eclectic, it’s incapable of standing still, it’s insane and it is very funny. But it’s also not shy about how bleak it all is. You have to laugh, because if you don’t, you’ll scream, and Cave World captures that sensation better than anything else this year.

Very few albums this year rewarded your patience and careful attention as generously as Ethel Cain’s debut LP. Between a gorgeous atmospheric intro and a cathartic, emotive opener in American Teenager, your opening minutes are nothing short of awe-inspiring. From here, the album pivots between hazy moments of ethereal worldbuilding, and earth-shattering, subterranean explosions of catharsis, all as part of an engrossing tale of intergenerational trauma. The album is a vicious cycle of gut punches followed by warm embraces, and it will consume you if you let it. You should let it.

This does not feel like listening to an album. This feels like being delivered a profane sermon, inside the rotting corpse of a church, at the blackened end of everything. There is a bile, a malice that has been allowed to fester at the heart of our society for all too long, and Ashenspire have captured this with all the anger and disgust it warrants. Haunting and poetic in its lyricism without wasting the blunt rage of its delivery, musically varied but never lacking in aggression or creativity, Hostile Archiecture is a document of a society gone Wrong, as complete in its assessment as it is uncomfortable in the truths it makes you face. I hope an album like this never has to feel this necessary again.
