MINDWARP (1992)
Tumblr media
Mindwarp (1992): Buckle Up for a B-Movie Bonanza!
• Title: Mindwarp
• Year: 1992
• Genre: Sci-Fi/Horror/Psychedelic Mindtrip
• Country: USA (with a heavy dose of DIY ingenuity)
Plot Twist: Imagine a world where everyone chills in a blissful VR utopia, except Judy. Yeah, she's allergic to fake happiness and prefers the post-apocalyptic wasteland outside. Think "The Matrix" took a wrong turn at "Mad Max" and ended up in a B-movie fever dream.
Genre Blender Gone Wild: This film throws genres at the wall like a toddler with a paintbrush. Sci-fi? Check. Cyberpunk? You bet. Gore galore? Oh, honey, you haven't seen anything yet. It's a beautiful mess, like a glitter bomb exploded in a comic book store.
Acting: B-Movie All-Stars: Let's be honest, the Oscars ain't calling these thespians anytime soon. But hey, they bring the camp with enough enthusiasm to power a small village. Plus, Bruce Campbell shows up, reminding us that even B-movies deserve cult heroes.
Visuals: Practical Effects Paradise: Forget fancy CGI, this film is all about good old-fashioned practical effects. Think rubber monsters that would make your grandma faint, buckets of ooze that would impress a toxic waste dump, and costumes that scream "made from my neighbor's curtains." It's charmingly low-budget, like a high school play on acid.
Sound and Fury: The soundtrack is a synthwave assault on your eardrums, perfectly capturing the film's gloriously cheesy sci-fi atmosphere. The sound effects are, well, let's just say you'll know exactly when someone meets their splattery demise. Think Gallagher watermelon-smashing level of impact.
Themes: Don't Trust the System (or Your Brain): Deep down, Mindwarp is more than just gore and giggles. It explores themes of individuality, rebellion against the status quo, and the dark side of technology. Think "1984" meets "Total Recall," but with a B-movie twist. Just don't overthink it – the fun is in the absurdity.
My Verdict: A Cult Classic in the Making: 2 out of 5 star. Mindwarp isn't your typical Hollywood blockbuster. It's a love letter to B-movies, a testament to practical effects, and a hilarious reminder that sometimes, the most fun comes from films that don't take themselves too seriously. So grab some popcorn, dim the lights, and prepare for a wild ride. Just remember, this ain't your grandma's sci-fi – it's a VHS treasure from the bargain bin of brilliance.
General Reception: Critics Shriek, Fans Rejoice: The suits in ivory towers weren't exactly thrilled with Mindwarp, but who needs them when you have cult followings? Over the years, it's gained a loyal fanbase of B-movie aficionados and sci-fi fiends who appreciate its unique blend of cheese, gore, and heart.
Budget vs. Box Office: Made for the price of a used car (and probably some duct tape), Mindwarp never graced the silver screen. But thanks to the magic of VHS and the power of the internet, it's probably earned its creators several lifetimes' worth of pizza and rubber monster parts.
Trivial Tidbit: The film was originally titled "Brain Slasher" and featured an ending so graphic, it would make Freddy Krueger blush. Thankfully, they toned it down for the faint of heart (and MPAA ratings).
So, if you're looking for a polished, high-brow sci-fi experience, head elsewhere. But if you're craving a B-movie adventure overflowing with laughs, gore, and enough cheese to fuel a nacho bar, then Mindwarp is your cinematic soulmate. Just remember, buckle up, hold onto your brain, and embrace the glorious absurdity. You might just have the best bad time of your life.

What is the Best Doctor Who Story Ever Told?
Hello everybody and welcome to this, frankly ridiculously sized, tournament between not only every televised Doctor Who story, not only the spinoffs, not only a large number of minisodes, but over a 100 audios and dozens of other stories from other corners of the EU.
Now we will have to whittle over 600 stories down to jusst one, that is a lot of matches, a lot of rounds, just a lot, until very late in the game, rounds will be posted across several days. Right now the goal is to post (up to) new matches daily from Sunday to Thursday, with Friday's a day off for my own sake, which in my current plan places the final on the 18th of December (thats right, this'll be out of date before its even over, during round 2 in fact)
You can use this form to submit propaganda for your favourite stories (or anti propaganda for ones you hate). there is a more checkable list of nominations here if you want to know what you can submit propaganda for
without further ado
ROUND 1 (Group Stage)
earlier in the year I ran some polls between televised Doctor Who stories, the top 50% for each Doctor have automatically advanced to Round 2, which is why (a) there are stories missing, and (b) the groups between the remaing stories are a lot deadlier
Every day will have groups from across the Doctor Who Universe, from Classic Who, New Who, TV Spinoffs, and the EU

2024 MOVIE LIST
www.tumblr.com/theharpermovieblog
FANGORIA FILMS DOUBLE FEATURE pt.1
I re-watched Mindwarp (1992)
In the early 1990's FANGORIA produced three horror films. One of them, "Children Of The Night", I re-watched last year for my Halloween list. I thought I'd re-watch the other two Fangoria films and see if they are still as fun as my childhood self found them to be.
A young woman, disillusioned with her society's choice to live in a virtual reality, is exiled to the real world.
It's kind of like the Matrix, but not at all, but kind of, but not.
For better or worse, this is the best of the three Fangoria films. It's not great, but it has an interesting story idea. With a little better writing and a little more money behind it, this might have worked.
As it stands now, "Mindwarp" is like an extended episode of "The Outer Limits". It's cheap looking and it's sci-fi elements aren't all that impressive. It also eventually abandons it's main themes for a more gory underground-mutant story. Which, I'm not totally complaining about, as I enjoy a cheap mutant movie now and again.
The real draw here is genre veterans Bruce Campbell and Angus Schrimm. It's just fun to see both actors in a movie that's outside of their respective b-horror franchises. They both do a good job of giving this movie a little added bonus.
I can't really recommend this outside of the horror-nerd crowd, because that crowd are the only ones who would get a little thrill from it.
As a horror-nerd myself, as much as this movie is cheap and not fully thought out, I didn't hate watching it. It's kind of interesting and kind of fun at times. It's not good, but it's watchable for several reasons, one of which being it's downer ending which is played off as a happy ending. Add that with some recognizable faces and some clever ideas, and you have a movie that was almost something cool.
But, you really have to have a taste for this style of crap to get anything out of it. There really isn't much to say beyond that.

Note
what is your favorite and least favorite piece of bruce media 👀
All Time Favorites: The Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead 2 (1987)
Other great stuff: Xena Warrior Princess/Hercules Legendary Journeys (fortunately Kevin Sorbo isn’t in a few of Bruce’s Hercules episodes), Sky High (2005), The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), Army of Darkness (1992)
Stuff that I have conflicting feelings about, but is worth checking out if you’re a fan: Running Time (1997), Jack of All Trades, Mindwarp (1992), Lunatics: A Love Story (1991), Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989), The Woods (2006), Crimewave (1985)
Stuff I’m a huge hater towards: Moontrap (1989), Man with the Screaming Brain (2005), and worst of all, Alien Apocalypse (2005)
I tried not to include movies & tv where he has just a small cameo part, but if I did I’d include Fargo (1996) in all time favorites, Intruder (1989) & Spider-Man 2 (2004) in other great stuff, and his episode of The X Files in worth checking out. I wasn’t sure where to put his book, If Chins Could Kill, but it’s a fun read & I’d recommend that as well!
