Hayagriva, ritual mask
Hayagriva is a Great Protector (vidyaraja) and, together with Yamantaka, one of the most popular personal, tutelary deities (yidam) among the Gelugpa, particularly in Mongolia. It is a figure devotees could choose to identify with in their meditations (Yidam). Originally conceived as a form of the Hindu god Vishnu, Hayagriva was brought into the Buddhist pantheon in the sixth century as a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and a member of the Lotus Family of deities presided over by the Buddha Amitabha. His main role is as a destroyer of the obstacles standing in the way of enlightenment and as a Great Protector, particularly of the integrity of sacred texts.
Hayagriva is one of the very few yidams to assume a role as Great Protector in the 'tsam' ritual dance. The Mongolian tsam dances have an important artistical side. They include dances, musics and luxurious costumes, and have a didactic side since they represent a scenary or some persons from Buddhist philosophy. It's also supposed to bring good fortune to people. In the 19th century, more than 500 among the 700 monasteries of Mongolia had their own vision of the dance. Like Buddhas and bodhisattvas, the yidam were often generally ranked too high to appear in the dance. Although the nineteenth-century Russian Mongolist Aleksei Pozdneyev does not mention Hayagriva's participation in the Erleg Khan (Yama) tsam, Hayagriva did play a role in several different Tibetan performances, especially at Kumbum in Amdo. Similarly, in the tsam held as part of the ritual Mani Rimdu, Hayagriva has profound significance. Mani Rimdu's style was strongly influenced by Mindroling, a Nyingmapa monastery known for its elaborate dances using a hundred or more masks, whose head lama in the seventeenth century, Gyurme Dorje, was the guru of the broad-minded Fifth Dalai Lama. It was the Great Fifth who actively promoted the sacred dance among the Gelugpa and later influenced its development in Mongolia. In Mani Rimdu, which revolves around the figure of the Lord of the Dance (identified with Lokeshvara and Avalokiteshvara), Hayagriva is the "wisdom mind hero living inside Lokeshvara's heart" and is called on to perform a horse dance in which he "dissolves the three worlds into the objectless realm."
This large papier-mâché mask of Hayagriva depicts him in his role as one who expels demons and defines borders and who builds a Diamond Pavilion to keep out obstructive forces where devotees may dwell until Maitreya, the Future Buddha arrives.

Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche was the first Tibetan lama to take a genuine interest in westerners and their culture, and I am sorry to say that he may well be the last. It wasn’t until I saw how Trungpa Rinpoche presented the Dharma in the West that I began to realise that westerners hold very different points of view to the Tibetans.
Trungpa Rinpoche’s methods were thought out in the minutest detail. I remember seeing Shambhala students at Karmê Chöling, Vermont, being drilled like soldiers. I later learned that Trungpa Rinpoche had insisted that they salute English-style, not American. Rinpoche also asked his American students to practise elocution by saying ‘Cathy’s hair is black’ in an English accent, over and over again. At first, it sounded like a ridiculous waste of precious time. What was he doing? It wasn’t until many years later that I began to appreciate his methods.
During Vajrayana ceremonies in Tibetan monasteries, monks sit in neat rows, chant in unison, beat drums and blow horns in carefully choreographed rituals that have been performed in exactly the same way for hundreds of years. The monks of Mindrolling monastery are famous for the perfection of their group practices. One hundred monks can pick up their vajras and bells in unison without a sound.
Vajrayana ritual is very much a part of Tibetan culture and an effective method for aligning body and mind. In a way, it is a kind of mindfulness practice. How should this very Tibetan method be translated for non-Tibetans? Trungpa Rinpoche was probably the only Tibetan lama who had the guts and imagination to experiment. He taught his American students the practice of drill, making them march in sync like soldiers, and gave them English elocution lessons to increase their awareness. I thought his ideas were brilliant.
In the same way that to point at the moon you need a finger, deluded human beings need a vessel, a culture, to contain the wisdom they wish to uphold. Should Tibetan culture be imported lock, stock and barrel into America? No, said Trungpa Rinpoche, it shouldn’t. Why import a Tibetan finger to point at a western finger if what you really want to do is point at the moon? It’s futile. Is it possible to fit non-dual teachings into a vessel forged by Judeo-Christian values and traditions? Possibly.
Many of us admired Trungpa Rinpoche’s courageous, if somewhat avant-garde attempts. Nevertheless, news of his experiments raised eyebrows back home in the Himalayas, and even amongst the few westerners who had already been thoroughly marinated in Tibetan culture.
What I am trying to say is this: it takes time to work out how to present the Dharma to students from diverse cultures. It takes, time, planning, vision and diligence. And the merest suggestion of change inevitably attracts harsh criticism. Who among us has the guts to ask Americans to pronounce their vowels like the English? Or to dress hippies in military uniforms? Even Trungpa Rinpoche’s shrine arrangement was a masterpiece, neither overwhelming western students with Tibetanness nor straying too far from Tibetan tradition.
He chose to wear a suit and tie instead of heavy brocades and hats, and called himself ‘Mukpo’, which means Brown. He never bombarded his students with Tibetan paraphernalia, yet he never lost sight of his Tibetan roots.
The traditions he grew up with were adapted to suit the place, the time and the people he was teaching. And he skilfully wove in aspects of the Japanese aesthetic that he and his students found so appealing.
Trungpa Rinpoche, great visionary that he was, died too young. His death was not only a great loss for the Dharma but the entire future of Buddhism in the West. I must admit that, at first, I was critical of his methods. But I gradually began to see that, as we are now teaching such diverse peoples, not only must we take into consideration their cultural background but also the generation they were born into.
It bugs me that more is being said about Trungpa Rinpoche’s eccentric behaviour than his courageous and inventive approach to teaching Americans. Just as parents spend hours talking baby-talk with their new-born babies, Trungpa Rinpoche willingly absorbed as much as he could of American culture and then tried to communicate with his American students on their level. How many other lamas have even made the attempt?

Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, a significant figure in Tibetan Buddhism, was born in 1820 during the Iron Dragon year, on the 5th day of the 6th month, in Yaru Khyungchen Drak, within the spiritual valley of Taerlung in Derge, Kham, into the Dilgo family. Extremely rare photo of the small rainbow body or the bodily remains reaching the aim of successful practice (dmar gdung) of the Great Tertön Nyela Rangrig Dorje. This bodily remains are regarded as a Major Means for the Liberation Upon Seeing (mthong grol chen mo).
Dudjom Rinpoche wrote about this small rainbow body:
"It is impossible, too, to enumerate all those who passed into the rainbow body by the paths of the profound treasures of the Great Perfection, as exemplified by the Southern and Northern Treasures tradition. Even during this late age, this may still be illustrated. For example, in 1883/84 (water sheep year, fifteenth cycle) [sic] the lord among accomplished masters, Rigdzin Pema Düddul, vanished in the body of light. Afterwards, when his personal disciple, Tertön Rangrig Dorje passed away at Mindroling, his remains vanished into light. What was left behind, which was about six inches in size, was taken to Lumorab in Eastern Tibet, where it can still be seen today."
Finally after several research travels and pilgrimages Naldjor succeeded in 2019 to actually pay homage to the bodily remains of the Great Tertön Nyela Rangrig Dorje aka Rangrig Dorje or Kusum Lingpa (sku gsum gling pa,
1847-1903) and take photos. Thus, this and other sacred objects were not lost but safeguarded in the Monastery of Lumorab Gönpa, abbr. as Lurab, which is more fully known Ase Lumorab Monastery (a bse klu mo rab dgon pa) and which has been established by the Master in 1896.
The bodily remains are enshrined in a glass box together with the Master's damaru, vajra and bell. The small body is placed on a plate and covered with silks; they are heavily ornamented with gold and precious stones. Especially the head is decorated with a golden crown, etc.
Because of the reflection of lights and the stunning multicolored 'light show' around taking photos is a real task but at the same time a great experience. The inscription reads in English 'The Whole Body relics of Dharma King Rigdzin Kusum Lingpa' the English omits that these precious bodily remains of the small rainbow body ('ja' lus chung ngu) are regarded as The Major Means for the Liberation Upon Seeing
