God sure was in a good mood when he made this place.

My dear friend Alejandro has been tirelessly working for over a decade to preserve reptile and amphibian species in one of the most biodiverse places on earth - the beautiful cloud forest of Mindo in Ecuador.

So when his team discovered this thought to be extinct toad during a herpetology survey, they had to act. A difficult decision was made to take the discovered surviving members of the species into a captive breeding program in Quito.

Despite having a high success rate with breeding most other harlequin toads in captivity, the program was unsuccessful. All of the captive Mindo Harlequin Toads passed away before producing viable offspring.

The only remaining way of preserving the species is to protect its habitat and hope for natural breeding success. And unfortunately, the last available habitat for this beautiful toad is going to be sold very soon - and it is in an area ripe for development and resource exploitation.

Thankfully, my friends refuse to let this happen without a fight. They’re fundraising to purchase the land and create the Reserva Arlequín, a nature reserve that will protect not only this harlequin toad species, but the other beautiful species that call Mindo home. The foundation they created, Khamai Foundation, is full of talented scientists, photographers, and policy experts - this isn’t their first time doing a large-scale conservation project.

Without help from the global community, this toad likely won’t escape extinction again.

So please, consider donating if you can. Right now they only have 19 donors, and are only 15% of the way to reaching their goal with less than 90 days to go.
