If you ever walk around a harbor somewhere between Costa Rica and Alaska, you're bound to come across the playful barking of sea lions. These friendly animals, pictured today, can be seen sunning themselves on rocks off the west coast of North America. Although they resemble seals, the key to telling them apart is their ears: sea lions have visible ears, seals don't.

A Texas Monthly című lap 1976 januárjában jelentette be, hogy Larry McMurtry szerződést írt alá a filmadaptáció forgatókönyvének megírására.

Martin Scorsese, Ralph Bakshi és Oliver Stone is igyekezett megvalósítani a filmet, de nem jártak sikerrel, és elengedték.

A Rhino Films 1992-ben kezdett el dolgozni a filmváltozaton. A produkciós vezető és a film producere, Stephen Németh eredetileg Lee Tamahorit szerette volna rendezőnek, de ő csak az 1997. januári kezdési időpont után állt rendelkezésre. Johnny Depp Bruce Robinsont szerette volna, de ő „nem állt rendelkezésre”.

A Rhino ezután Thompsonhoz fordult, hogy hosszabbítsa meg a filmjogokat, de a szerző és az ügyvédei elutasították az ajánlatot.

A Rhino a nyomás hatására ellenlépett, és néhány napon belül zöld utat adott a projektnek, a rendezésre pedig felbérelte Alex Coxot.

Thompson közben meghosszabbította a szerződést, de csak azzal a feltétellel, hogy Terry Gilliam készíti el a filmet. A Rhino erre felbérelte Gilliamet,de nem akart elköteleződni mellette, arra az esetre, ha nem működne a dolog.

A stúdió azzal fenyegetőzött, hogy Coxszal, Depp és del Toro nélkül készítik el.

A Universal Pictures itt szállt be a film forgalmazásába. Noha Depp és Gilliam fejenként 500 000 dollárt kapott, a rendezőnek még mindig nem volt érvényes szerződése. Depp és Gilliam válaszul kizárta a Rhino-t a forgatásról.

Gilliam szerint a forgatás megkezdésekor még nem állt rendelkezésre szilárd költségvetés.

Miközben Depp Los Angelesben forgatott, kapott egy hívást Bill Murray-től, aki az Ahol a bölény dübörög című 1980-as filmben Thompsont játszotta. Figyelmeztette Deppet: „Légy óvatos, különben tíz év múlva is őt fogod játszani... A következő szereped legyen valami drasztikusan más”.

A Las Vegas-i forgatás 1997. augusztus 3-án kezdődött és 56 napig tartott. A kaszinókban csak hajnali kettő és hat között forgathattak, és csak hat asztalt kaptak, illetve ragaszkodtak hozzá, hogy a statiszták valóban játsszanak.

Nicola Pecorini olasz operatőrt azt követően kérték fel, hogy küldött felvétet, amelyben azzal viccelődött, hogy csak egy szeme van (a másikat retinarák miatt vesztette el). Pecorini szerint a film kinézetére Robert Yarber festményei voltak hatással.

A Félelem és reszketés Las Vegasban a Cannes-i Filmfesztiválon debütált 1998-ban, és anyagilag nagyot bukott. Filmjével kapcsolatban Gilliam erős reakciókat akart kiváltani: „Azt akarom, hogy úgy tekintsenek rá, mint minden idők egyik legjobb, és leggyűlöltebb filmjére”.

A filmet számos díjra jelölték, Terry Gilliamet Arany Pálmára jelölték, míg Johnny Depp 1998-ban elnyerte az Orosz Filmkritikusok Céhétől a legjobb külföldi színésznek járó elismerést. Filmművelő

Scientists Made a List of Lost Birds and Now They Want Us to Find Them. (New York Times)

Excerpt from this New York Times story:

In 2022, an ornithologist high in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains of northern Colombia spotted the shimmering emerald green and cobalt blue feathers of the Santa Marta sabrewing. A large hummingbird, it had only been documented twice since 1879. As the bird sat on a branch the ornithologist, Yurgen Vega, captured images.

Once lost to science, it now was found.

The bird was on the American Bird Conservancy’s 10 most wanted list, which sits atop a longer register of “lost birds,” which are formally defined as not having been documented by photographic, audio or genetic evidence in at least a decade.

A major goal of the list is to persuade bird watchers and others to look for these birds as they go out into the field, and to bring back evidence the birds have not gone extinct.

People have searched for lost birds for decades. But the process was formalized in 2020 by the conservancy, in partnership with two other groups, Re:wild and BirdLife International, as the Search for Lost Birds project.

Researchers from the groups published a paper in June with a definitive list of birds that need finding. They scoured tens of millions of photos, videos and audio recordings in birding databases such as iNaturalist and xeno-canto. The study concluded that there are 144 species of bird lost to the scientific world but that may still exist.

The northern gannet (Morus bassanus) is a seabird, the largest species of the gannet family, Sulidae. It is native to the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, breeding in Western Europe and Northeastern North America. It is the largest seabird in the northern Atlantic.

Arctic Wolf (Canis Lupus var.)

The arctic wolf is one of 24 races of the gray wolf. It makes its home in some of the most inhospitable areas of North America and Eurasia - where temperatures range from the 90s in the summer to minus 87°F in the winter. It has adapted to its environment by growing a thick fur coat with phenomenal insulating qualities and fur padding on its feet. Gray wolves are social animals, functioning as integral members of the pack. Wolves are territorial, with ranges covering 400 or more square miles. The den is their home center.

In most cases pups are born to the lead male and female of the pack, though the responsibility for raising the young is shared by all members. There are generally 4 - 7 pups born in a litter in the early spring. Like all races of wolves, the arctic wolf forms strong emotional attachments to its young and to other individuals in the pack.
