Chapter 359: The Royal Schedule
It was only a few minutes past dawn, but while the royal family was only now beginning to stir, the servants wing was already bustling with activity as the staff prepared for another busy day.
“I trust you familiarized yourself with his royal highness’ schedule for the day?” Bixby asked as he walked down the servant's corridor with St. James.
“Yes, sir,” St. James responded. “The prince will breakfast with her royal highness, then meet with the prime minister at nine, followed by a call with the minister of finance at ten.”
“And what about Prince Michael’s request for a few minutes with his father?” Bixby asked. "It's irregular, but his royal highness prioritizes his family over all else."
“My thought would be to schedule it over lunch,” St. James said. “But since Prince Michael said it was fairly urgent, we could squeeze him in after the prime minister’s visit. I’m sure Minister Abelard won’t mind waiting just a few minutes, and, based on the agenda he provided, there’s nothing critical about their ten o’clock call.”
Bixby stopped and turned to St. James, nodding.
“Very good,” Bixby said, nodding. “You have a better feel for this than one would expect after only a few days.”
“Thank you, sir,” St. James replied. “I’ve learned a great deal from simply watching you work, so it’s given me a good feel for how to determine when it’s necessary to improvise a bit. After his call with Minister Abelard, his royal highness must change. He’s due for the groundbreaking of the Darnley Center for International Relations at noon, then he’ll lunch with the Center’s board.”
“He’s looking forward to that,” Bixby said. “Lord Darnley was a great support to Prince Stephen during his early years on the throne, so I know his royal highness was quite glad to have an opportunity to recognize his service to Weston. Go on, St. James.”
“Prince Stephen is due back at the palace by two, and has a call scheduled with King Henry of Corwyn at three. However, I can’t seem to find an agenda for that conversation. Am I missing something?”
“No,” Bixby replied. “Prince Stephen and King Henry are old schoolmates and very close friends, so it’s likely the call is more social in nature.”
“Ah,” St. James said, nodding as they resumed their walk down the hallway. “The prince has nothing scheduled after that call, although I’ve had several government officials ask for a few minutes of his time. Do you think I should try to set up meetings for the rest of the day?”
“No,” Bixby replied. “His royal highness has been very tired of late, and the family will be having a guest for dinner – the Baroness Wexton, Lady Helena Reynolds. I’m sure he’ll wish to rest before she arrives.”
“Very well, then,” St. James said, casually.
“You seem to have everything well in hand, then, St. James,” Bixby said, stopping at his office door. “I’ll leave you on your own today. If Prince Stephen requires my attendance, just call. I’ll be right here.”

Black Sand Shores, CA (No. 1)
Governor Juan Alvarado granted Rancho San Jose y Sur Chiquito, including the land from Carmel to near Palo Colorado Canyon, to José Castro in about 1848. Castro documented a trail from Monterey to Palo Colorado Canyon used by Native Americans when he filed a map of his purchase in 1853. When the region was first settled by European immigrants in 1853, it was the United States' "last frontier".
After California gained statehood, the trail from Carmel to Mill Creek (present-day Bixby Canyon) was declared a public road by the county in 1855. But the California coast south of Carmel and north of San Simeon remained one of the most remote regions in the state, rivaling at the time nearly any other region in the United States for its difficult access. It remained largely an untouched wilderness until early in the twentieth century.
Yankee businessman Charles Henry Bixby bought several hundred acres south of Mill Creek and harvested lumber, tanbark, and lime. Without a road, he resorted to using a landing chute and hoist to transfer the goods to steamers anchored offshore.
Bixby tried to persuade the county to build a road to Bixby Creek, but they refused, replying that "no one would want to live there". In 1870, Bixby and his father hired men to improve the track and constructed the first wagon road including 23 bridges from the Carmel Mission to Bixby Creek.
Further south, the Rancho El Sur grant extended from the mouth of Little Sur River inland about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) over the coastal mountains and south along the coast past the mouth of the Big Sur River to Cooper's Point. It was largely a cattle operation. There was a brief industrial boom in the late 19th century, but the early decades of the twentieth century passed with few changes, and Big Sur remained a nearly inaccessible wilderness.

Demand has tripled, quadrupled at California abortion clinics since Roe fell | National | union-bulletin.com
Six months after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, prompting about half of the states in the country to move to ban or limit abortion access, these are the kinds of stories California clinics say they are encountering on a regular basis as they continue to serve an influx of patients from Texas, Arizona and beyond.
“When patients arrive, they’re in a much more panicked situation,” said Stacy Cross, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, which serves half of the counties in California, including most of the Bay Area. “These are patients frequently that have never left their small hometown. And now they’re having to drive or fly thousands of miles to get essential health care.”
California abortion providers have long been gearing up for an expected surge of patients from states with new abortion bans after the court reversed half a century of abortion rights in June. But while demand for care from out-of-state women is definitely up — at Mar Monte’s clinics it’s quadruple what it was before the Supreme Court ruling — it’s not as high as some experts predicted.
That’s likely because while 26 states were poised to ban or limit abortions with the fall of Roe, not all of them have been able to do so, because of legal challenges and legislative delays. And for most women who need an abortion but can’t get one in their state, California is a trek — going to North Carolina, Colorado or Illinois would be far easier.
“California has become extremely well prepared and done everything possible to be inviting,” said Carole Joffe, a professor at the UCSF Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health. “But simple facts of geography mean that at this moment more people are going to places where it’s still legal in the South and Midwest.”
Even so, the increase in out-of-state patients has had ramifications for California clinics, such as increased wait times in some places.
Planned Parenthood Mar Monte — the Bay Area’s main affiliate — prepared to serve between 250 and 500 extra patients per week. Instead, it is seeing about 100 extra patients per month. Even so, that represents an overall four-fold increase from last year.
What’s even more stark is the spike in women who can’t afford to pay for the procedure. Last fiscal year, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte subsidized all or part of the cost of 2,800 abortions. This fiscal year, that number has jumped to more than 3,500 — showcasing the impact abortion bans have on low-income women.

Big Sur, day three
It was colder last night than the first, so I had to find my beanie at some point overnight to keep my head warm while I slept. The night sky was perfectly clear and I got, honestly, a pretty goddamn amazing photo of the Milky Way WITH MY IPHONE. It’s insane what they can do now. The photos I’ve been posting have been a mixture of iPhone 14 Pro and Fuji X-T10 photos. I think it says a hell of a lot that my phone is pretty much beating my camera now for photo capabilities.
I finally fell asleep last night despite the French theater dorks singing songs around the campfire all night. Did I know I was going to hear an acoustic version of a Britney Spears song while camping? No. But, I did and there’s nothing I can do about it. I should’ve banged some pots near their campsite for revenge.
Today’s plans included driving up to Monterey and then taking Old Coast Road back down into Big Sur. Monterey was fine. I went to the cannery area, which I’d never been to before, and the wharf. I saw some sea lions, but no otters. They’re in a different part of the city and I didn’t feel like driving 17 miles out to see them. The wharf - and cannery for that matter - were mostly tourist trap shops and restaurants but I did have some good fish and chips so it wasn’t a total wash.
From the north, Old Coast Road begins at Bixby Bridge. It’s a dirt road that most people pull off on to park when the highway gets too crowded and unsafe. If you have some clearance and 4WD or AWD, keep driving and you’re in for a treat. Once you pass the first few lots, you end up on a road through redwoods. The sun disappears behind the hills and the treetops and you’re in a new world. It’s quiet and cool, there is no one out there with you and the only sounds are your breathing and the engine. A lot of the road is easily navigable, I didn’t have to air down or anything. But, at a certain point on the other side of the redwoods, it’s absolutely terrifying. I was sure I was going to pop a tire or catch my sidewall on a sharp rock on the switchbacks down. Considering I could only go about 5 MPH for about a mile, I had plenty of time to think about how I’d change the tire on a hill made up of what seemed like only rocks and no flat areas. Spoiler: didn’t think of anything.
After that section, the road gets noticeably easier to drive. The forests give way to rolling hills and ranches. I found myself wondering how the people who live this far out really do it. I’m sure it’s feasible but it just seems like such a chore just to exist unless you grow most of your food and live off-grid. Eventually, I reached the top of the hills where the road lay and I was presented with the entire ocean. I could see for miles north, south, and west. The lighthouse was visible from where I’d stopped to take it all in. The sun was lower in the sky and shimmered off the uninterrupted ocean just beyond PCH. It was another completely quiet moment with just myself, the wind, and my truck. It might have been in this moment that I decided my time in Los Angeles is coming to an end and it was time to move onto somewhere new and free of the distractions keeping me occupied each day.

The Old Volvo Chronicles: Coast Road
Coast Road, between Bixby Bridge on California Highway One and Andrew Molera State Park in Big Sur. Google says that it is 10.1 miles of dirt, but in 1991, there were only paper maps and cell phones were practically still science fiction. Kennedy and I were out for a night run in my ‘71 Volvo. He knew the road better than I did, because he regularly strafed it in his red VW GTI. The student…

Chapter 348: A Pawn Advances
“Congratulations,” Miles Bixby said. “You have successfully completed the background check and security interviews, and I’m quite comfortable with your abilities."
"Thank you, sir," the man said from across his desk. "I have done my best to prepare myself for a position like this throughout my career."
"You have done very well, then," Bixby replied. "In fact, in many ways you’re even better qualified for this position than I – though I like to think my experience counts for a great deal.”
“Of course, sir,” the man said, nodding. “I shall be fortunate to do half as well as you have in the role.”
“We shall see,” Bixby said. “If you can start on Monday, we’ll begin your training and evaluation period. So long as Prince Stephen is satisfied with your performance, we can begin discussing a transition of duties. My goal would be to leave service by September at the very latest.”
Bixby leaned forward and studied his proposed successor.
“I’m placing a great deal of trust in you, young man, and I sincerely hope you do not disappoint,” Bixby continued. “The duties you will be assuming will, in time, make you one of the most important men in Weston. But with that power comes great responsibility, and I expect you to live up to my – and, of course, Prince Stephen’s – expectations.”
Bixby pressed the hidden button under his desk and his aide entered through the office door.
“Take Mr. St. James to the chancellor’s office, Bryce,” Bixby said, rising. “He’ll need to fill out payroll information and sign a confidentiality agreement before he can start work.”
He stepped around his desk and extended a hand.
“I will see you Monday morning at 5 a.m., Mr. St. James,” he said. “I look forward to getting better acquainted.”
St. James stood and shook Bixby’s hand.
“As do I, sir,” he said. “As do I.”

Bixby Bridge, CA (No. 4)
The bridge was already popular before the introduction of smart phones and social media, and visitors to the Bixby Bridge and other Big Sur attractions have dramatically increased since then. Due to the large number of visitors, congestion and slow traffic between Carmel and the bridge is frequently the norm during popular holiday and vacation periods. The bridge was rated as the No. 1 “Instagram-Worthy Destination for 2019 Travels” by the website Travelpulse.com. The California state tourism commission describes the bridge as "a must-see road trip spot for many and probably the most Instagrammed features [sic] along [the] Highway 1 coastline." It promotes the bridge world-wide, including a deal with China's online tourism operator Tuniu that put the bridge on a custom route.
During holiday weekends and most summer vacation periods, the bridge area is "like a Safeway parking lot" according to a local resident. Traffic can come to a standstill as motorists wait for a parking spot. There is a pull out to the north and west side of Highway 1, but when it is full, visitors sometimes fail to completely pull off the highway, leaving inadequate space for passing vehicles.
The area near the bridge has become overwhelmed by visitors. Tourists routinely ignore warning signs to stay off the cliffs, and walk across the narrow 24 feet (7.3 m) wide bridge, although there is no room for pedestrians. There are no toilets within several miles of the bridge, and visitors resort to defecating in nearby bushes. Residents complain about toilet paper, human waste, and trash littering the roadside. On December 29, 2018, two dozen residents and business leaders turned out with signs alongside the northern approach to the bridge to launch a campaign they've named The Big Sur Pledge, encouraging visitors to treat the region with more respect.
