MILES 'TAILS' PROWER!!!! he's been my favourite sonic character since i was little!!!! except for that brief period where it was amy because i found out tails was a boy and i, as a 7-year-old girl who had just learned about misoginy, decided amy was better because she was a girl. and that briefer period where it was cream because she had confetti in sonic dash.

my favourite iterations of him are scu tails, classic tails and sonic boom tails!!! i h/c him as autistic, having anxiety, low self-esteem but also being really cheerful and nonchalant about a lot of stuff. i enjoy trans tails of all kinds, but i believe in cis gnc tails.

10 characters I’d still love to see in Smash:

It seems like some of the hype for newcomers has died down. However, I’m still excited at the potential fighters who may come. Here are a few that I would love to see join the ranks:

(1) Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney) - I feel Phoenix is the best choice for a newcomer. He has a history with Nintendo, left his mark on gaming, and would be entirely unique. I even wrote out his potential moveset in a previous post. The potential for his stage would be amazing too, with Athena Cyke’s mood matrix being used to teleport from the courtroom to iconic cases. By a large margin, I’d love Phoenix to be in Smash Bros.

(2) Arle Nadja (Puyo Puyo) - I don’t believe puzzle games have been represented in Smash much. It’d be great to get Puyo Puyo into the fray with Arle. Since she’s the face of the franchise, she’d be a wonderful choice. She could throw puyos at enemies and use her spells like ice storm as special attacks. Her final smash could involve Puyo Puyo Fever. As for her stage, a simple one could be utilized to showcase other characters from the franchise and possibly puyos falling from above! With Puyo Puyo Tetris finally aiding in the popular of this series overseas, I think it would be a great choice. Of course, Jun Senoue’s amazing music would have to be included as well.

(3) Miles Tails Prower (Sonic the Hedgehog) - I’ve given up on the idea of Shadow being playable, (even though he would’ve made perfect sense as an echo Fighter). Tails would be a great choice. While some of his moves can be borrowed from Sonic, he could also use his arm cannon from Sonic Battle, dummy rings, bombs, T-pup and other devices from previous games. Of course, flight would be an aspect of his moves too. His final Smash could be similar to Samus’ where he gets into the Tornado-2 and lets off a huge laser blast. As for a stage, I think anything from the Dreamcast-era of Sonic would be good. It just needs to get away from the Green Hill aesthetic. He’d be a fun fit for a classic character that feels unique and yet familiar. I believe the Sonic series deserves more representation.

(4) Axel Stone (Streets of Rage) - I know this one is likely never going to happen, but Axel has appeared as a fan favorite for 4 out of his 4 games. He’s from a beat-em-up and so his moveset works perfectly for Smash. His new combos and attacks from Streets of Rage 4 would perfectly slide into Smash. His Grand Upper as a special makes so much sense. His stage could be based on the “streets” from the series, but it can also do the typical “elevator stage” that beat-em-ups are known for. This choice is more about a cool factor and one that could translate well, but Double Dragon would most likely get chosen over Streets of Rage.

(5) Blaze Fielding (Streets of Rage) - For the same reasons as Axel, Blaze would make an amazing addition. We wouldn’t need both, but I have been a fan of Blaze for many, many years. She has many attacks that would be so fun in Smash. However, I worry she might be considered too sexy for the game. There’s nothing wrong with that in principle, but Smash’s E10+ rating would beg to differ. It would be cool to have a strong female fighter like her though.

(6) Scorpion (Mortal Kombat) - Let’s get a bit crazy here. Mortal Kombat is a hugely iconic part of gaming as well. Mostly for its violence, of course. But if they can tone down Bayonetta, they can tone down Scorpion. His spear, vanishing attacks, and fire make a lot of sense for Smash Bros. His Final Smash could translate to a tame Fatality. His stage could be the Deadpool with acid pools of water draining health if you fall in. This would be a fun and wild choice. However, when you consider that the Mortal Kombat series is basically banned in Japan... this seems impossible. It’s still a cool idea regardless.

(7) Shantae (Shantae) - A fan favorite for many reasons. Considering Shantae got her start on the Gameboy Color and that many of her games are available on Nintendo platforms, she’d be a fun fit. Her transformations and hair attacks would work nicely in a match. She could have a lot of variety with her dances too. Her stage should incorporate the large bosses from her games as stage hazards. Again, she might be considered “too sexy,” but she’s already in the game as a Spirit, so let’s just go for it. Nothing wrong with beauty and power!

(8) Crash Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot) - I’m actually not the biggest Crash fan. I like the games, but they’re just fine to me. However, I think Crash has so many cool abilities that he’d be a wonderful new fighter. He oozes with fun. From spinning, sliding, and using bazookas; he has it all. His stage could be a jungle stage where the famous boulder comes crashing through the stage. Perhaps a time machine could toss you between different scenarios. The potential is endless and Crash has more than earned a spot.

(9) Rayman (Rayman) - I am utterly shocked that Rayman has not been added into Smash yet. Considering how Ubisoft has worked with Mario and Star Fox in the past, this feels like it was set up to happen. Rayman has countless games that are fondly remembered and his abilities from his arms, to his projectiles, to his helicopter hair could work easily in Smash! It’d be cool to get a French character into the mix too. His stage could be the beautiful stages from Origins or Legends, but you could also do a callback to the original games. This one should definitely happen! Again, I’m shocked it hasn’t come true yet.

(10) Chibi Robo (Chibi Robo) - I don’t think this will happen. Nintendo did not do this series any favors and have left it for dead. However, they also did the same thing to ARMS, so perhaps it’s possible? Chibi Robo already has the gadgets to make a fun moveset. Not to mention that he can use his cord to attack. His stage would be a simple house with the many characters from his games being part of the chaos. I would love for this little guy to get it, but I doubt it. Still, Min Min being included fills me with some hope.

I’ve been working on this for some days. Because of Aawesomepenguin’s latest post. I know how the Sonic movie goes. While we have known some stuff of it already before. But not in that much detail. 

This is basically my what if idea for a Sonic movie. I’ve made two of these before. The first being with Metal Sonic and Silver Sonic, the 2nd I’d like to called the, “Chaos Draft” because it was a loose adaption of Sonic Adventure and borrowing heavily from the fake Reddit info leak I’ve talked about before. 

Really I’ll give my honest thoughts on the Sonic movie when I see it personally. Because I don’t wanna just slam a whole bunch of negativity on it. But I’m mainly disappointed by the fact of the direction it went. I might end up loving the film. Yet I would of liked something like a more serious take on the franchise. Let me talk deep here mate.

I’ve wanted to talk about this despite this has been said in my head. I would love if it Sonic was made cool again. Which is a intriguing topic because hasn’t Sonic always been cool? It depends on how you see it. Which is why I seem more serious on a Sonic movie adaptation than other video game adaptions. Because the franchise means a lot to me. Which is why I want the movie to be good and hopefully the reception gets better because of it.

Despite I’ve learned I shouldn’t do a condensed loose version of Sonic Adventure and whatever else. My biggest inspirations for this new version of my Sonic movie was taken from several things. Such as my love for the 2018 movie adaption of Rampage by Brad Peyton. Which helped inspired this vision in a weird way. 

Along with Paul W.S. Anderson’s RE films mainly the first because of well those films aren’t big. Mainly low budget. So I decided to not take a risk with Chris Pratt as the lead character. Especially there were other characters in actors and characters. But also the mis-mash of ideas which is risky. Considering the first RE movie took elements from RE 1 and 2 and I wanted to try something like that.

The other inspiration was Sonic Adventure 2. Such as using elements from that story but not all of it where it be a direct adaption. This is the reason why I’ve been playing the game more(Mainly if I recall on the Dreamcast). To get inspiration for this story. While Adventure 2 suffers problems such as with writing and other things, it’s a game I personally love. Including this is a reason why Rouge is here(Along with the reason I want Lisa voicing that character), and other elements as well. Also considering when the Sonic movie we were getting was getting written. The Adventure games such as Sonic Adventure 2 Battle was an inspiration. Basically this classic image here.

Basically I wanted to make a outline while it’s not a draft. But a story I was happy with and I thought would make a good start off for Sonic movie. A story I felt would of been good as a stand alone in a way but it might get sequels anyway. Which is why it’s not just a simple origin story you have Sonic, Eggman, Tails, Amy Rose, Rouge, Metal Sonic, Silver Sonic, the GUN Commander, and the president(with his secretary of course). Especially that fake Reddit leaked story was in mind with the areas. But still it’s a story I feel personally happy with. Despite I have not written a script but it’s the outline I like.

In a similar way to the 2018 Rampage movie. Which while there are other nice and good video game movie adaptions as well such as Detective Pikachu. My direction for a film like this(it would be directed by someone else or whatever) is gonna be a lot more bad ass, a bit more serious, but most importantly a lot more emotional. 

Especially to aim for a PG-13 rating that older audiences can enjoy. Along with the other goal to understand who Sonic is as a character when he’s involved in a more serious situation where the world is kind of against him, he’s been framed, Robotnik and the, “Metal Brothers” are out to kill him. With Ian being this surrogate of like the fans that love Sonic(which may seem weird as hell), but also being a person that develops this close bond with this creature because they are very alike. Including Ian will risk his life to make sure this creature who has become his best friend, almost like a brother won’t die. But also with these other characters too such as Tails and Amy.

Including the other point is to make a surrogate better than well Chris Thorndyke because he’s a character that I felt should of been better. Yet Sonic is still the main protagonist with Ian being a deuteragonist. It’s to show in a setting like this humans can be pretty good characters if handled right. That’s why he’s there too in a way.

While I have thought of the idea people would look at the, “Make Sonic cool again” as a way of it being brought back to levels of Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic 06. But more so again like the Dreamcast era and some modern games and some classic games thrown in there a bit too. 

Besides I think I’ve made too many of these. I’m officially gonna stop because I’m kind of happy with what I did. With this idea because it’s I guess almost everything I want. It’s a reasonable starting point for a Sonic movie. Because it has things I like and would like to see in a movie. So I’m pleased with it. I’m being an annoyance to folks anyway making this shit. Because it seems disrespectful I make these while a movie is coming out anyway that’s already completed in a way. Despite we are getting a redesign. 

But again here’s my what if idea for a Sonic movie. Whether it could be at Paramount, or even at Warner Bros with Legendary Pictures. I’ve rambled on too long I talk too much. 

“Sometimes you gotta go fast! In a action packed adventure based upon the popular and iconic video game series, Sonic The Hedgehog.

The world is in serious danger when an insane scientist by the name of Dr. Ivo Robotnik(Jeffrey Dean Morgan) plans to take it over. His goal is to use the power of the mysterious Chaos Emeralds to power his machines. To ensure his victory, Robotnik has made certain robots that will make sure he is able to obtain his goal for world domination.

Now because of being mistaken for a villainous robot who looks like him. Sonic(Tom Holland), the world’s fastest hedgehog is on the run from the military. Along the way he meets a young GUN soldier Ian Andrews(Brenton Thwaites), a man who wants to help everyone the best he can. 

With them teaming up, on the run from the military known as GUN, and to get the Chaos Emeralds and stop Robotnik from achieving his goal. But during this time as they fight through a ever changing battlefield. Ian must make sure not only help stop a global catastrophe. Yet to also save Sonic who he’s developed an unshakable bond with. Especially from the horrifying threat of Metal Sonic”.

Characters.

Sonic The Hedgehog. Voiced by Tom Holland. A 21 year old hedgehog who’s cocky but kind and chill. 4 feet tall. The world’s fastest hedgehog who while being framed by Metal Sonic, wants to save the planet from Robotnik. Even if it means risking his own life helping these humans who don’t understand who he is as a person. Because he knows it’s the right thing to do/

Ian Andrews. Played by Brenton Thwaites. The 21 year old GUN Private who helps assist Sonic to save the planet. A young man who joined GUN because he wanted to simply helped people in his area. While only a Private assigned in his home area to defend it. He is courageous despite being afraid of certain enemies. Especially because he wants to simply help everyone the best he can. Including the blue hedgehog who he develops an unshakable bond with, almost like a brother. He knows Sonic is innocent and risks his life to reveal the truth.

Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The 55 year old scientist with an IQ of 300. Who wants to take over the planet, along with making Robotnikland a reality. While he may be hilarious, he is a rather cruel, narcissistic, and a very intelligent man who will do anything to get what he wants.

Miles Tails Prower. Voiced by: Noah Schnapp. A 14 year old two tailed fox. 3 feet tall. He’s an intelligent engineer and inventor who flies a plane, and Sonic’s best friend, who is like Sonic’s younger brother.

Amy Rose. Voiced by Maisie Williams. A 18 year old hedgehog. 4 feet tall. While she admittedly has a crush on Sonic. She’s like to make it as public. But she is a kind hearted young woman who wants to help her friends and will fight for them if needed. Especially to never give up on them.

Rouge The Bat. Voiced by Lisa Hannigan. A 24 year old bat who is helping Robotnik but is secretly a GUN agent. 4 feet tall. While a treasure hunter and even a thief. She’s actually much more kind than people think about her. Despite her narcissism, being strong minded, and flirtatious.

Metal Sonic. A robotic copy of Sonic himself and Robotnik’s personal enforcer. 4 feet tall. Inspired by Sonic’s skills and speed. Metal is Robotnik’s greatest creation. With a goal set in mind by Robotnik, to kill Sonic once and for all while being Robotnik’s personal enforcer and leader of his robotic army. But as time goes on, Metal becomes more obsessed with Sonic to where he thinks there can only be one Sonic.

Silver Sonic. Another robotic copy of Sonic and Robotnik’s powerhouse of a brute. 16 feet tall. While not as self aware as Metal. Silver Sonic’s doesn’t care and just would rather listen to his master Robotnik. Built to simply destroy anyone or anything that gets in the doctors way.

Abraham Westbrook the GUN Commander. Played by Idris Elba. The 53 year old commander who leads the GUN military. While trying to figure out what’s going on with Robotnik and Sonic. He’s trying to stop any possible threats to thw world.

Gabriel Ivan the President of the United States. Played by Oded Fehr. The 51 year old president of the USA. Who while trying to do what’s best for nation’s people and be against Robotnik. He understands Ian’s situation considering he was once a solider in the GUN military and just wanted to do the right thing. He’s also the one who sent Rouge to go undercover with Robotnik and to find Sonic as well.

To be honest I have thought about other characters. Such as being played by actors being like callbacks to stuff. Such as Deedee Magno Hall(Steven Universe), Jennifer Paz(Steven Universe), Shelby Rabara(Steven Universe), and Emilia Clarke. But I have realized there are too many characters if you don’t handle them right. Besides I think I just wanna post this after seeing that spoilers filled post. 

Including I’ll leave the little details under this with areas and the inspirations. Which I have talked already about. Other details are that I’d would love Andrew Lockington to do the score. 

I’ll also admit Ian who is not Gary anymore or he could be a younger brother of Gary. Ian is basically inspired by Leon Kennedy especially the RE2 remake version. Including I decided to make Ian’s Sonic’s new age because it might help them connect more or so.

I’m not gonna do a RT score because I don’t want to. Besides we haven’t even got the Sonic movie out yet with no score. I’m talking about Rotten Tomatoes. Hopefully you enjoy this or so. It’s just me rambling and yeah I’m done with these. Because I feel happy when I think about this story. Yet also it’s probably secretly annoying people now. Since I’ve just put down the tags, hope no one minds this in the Sonic movie positivity tag. Because I don’t really shit on the movie. Yet I want this to get some attraction. Despite I know my long rambling will turn people off.

K9′s Ramblings #14: Sonic Rivalries

Here in this installment of K9′s Ramblings, I’m gonna set up a cross continuity list of important rivalries within the Sonic franchise. Now let me lay down the law a bit here. The criteria for this list is rivalries that either already exist or should exist based on how anime they would be, spinoff potential and other factors I haven’t thought about yet. With that out of the way, let’s get started:

Sonic the Hedgehog:

Shadow the Hedgehog: The Arch-Rival of Sonic himself. A rivalry which is super anime.

Knuckles the Echidna: The OG rival to Sonic before Shadow, Silver and everyone else came along. Nowadays is just a friendly rival to Sanic, which is a natural progression for both their character arcs.

Silver the Hedgehog: Another friendly rival to Sonic who started out as a more antagonistic rivalry due to circumstances out of each party’s control. Considering how Silver, Sonic and Shadow are often labeled as the “Triple S Trio”, I could argue that Silver would either be a great secondary arch rival to Sonic or co-arch-rivals with Shadow to Sonic. I’d definitely like to see him and Sonic act more playfully cocky towards each other, especially in the IDW comics.

Jet the Hawk: Sonic’s primary extreme gear rival, and nothing else to be honest. 

Metal Sonic: This rivalry is more on the antagonistic side than the intense (Shadow) or friendly (Knuckles) side. But I guess this is what happens when a boss battle is so iconic that the character transcends boss-hood.

Johnny: I don’t see much in this rivalry to be honest. It was only around during the Sonic Rush games and I just view Johnny as a glorified second-in-command pirate to Captain Whisker.

Antoine D’Coolette: He (at least his Pre-SGW counterpart) was listed as one of Sonic’s rivals (especially when it came towards winning Sally’s affection) in the Sonic Wiki, so if the Freedom Fighters ever come back to the comics (or hell, maybe even make their own game debuts), I would like their rivalry to be explored more. I could see Twan himself working well with sword play mechanics similar to the ones from Sonic and the Black Knight.

Ash Mongoose: Not so much of a rival but more of a guy jealous against his girlfriend’s former boyfriend. Just adding him here for the sake of completion.

Monkey Khan: Similar to Ash, except these two have actually fought in combat before from what I can tell. If they ever resumed making Sonic Storybook games, he’d be fitting for the role of Sun Wukong in a Journey to the West adaptation. Or a game covering all four of the great classical novels of Chinese literature for that matter.

Geoffrey St. John: Similar to both Khan and Ash in that while I see his squabbles with Sonic over the love of Sally as more petty than anything else, at least I could see him hold up in a fight with Sonic unlike Ash.

Scourge the Hedgehog: Ah yes, the green evil clone of Sonic himself. I kinda like this jackass enough to feel a bit sad that he got purged during the Pendering. Hopefully Penders loses the copyrights/trademarks to what were essential his glorified Donut Steels and is forced to give them back to Sega.

Bean the Dynamite: I honestly have no idea why Bean is considered enough of a rival to Sonic to be included the rivals section of in his Pre-SGW Archie article.

Sam Speed: This rivalry is exclusive to the confines of the Sonic X continuity and is only listed here for completion’s sake. Couldn’t stand this guy’s ego. If the only way you can go fast is through a race car and a Hedgehog speedster can break the sound barrier, then you are already outclassed.

Swifty the Shrew: Just like the guy mentioned above, this rivalry is exclusive to the confines of the Sonic Boom continuity. I honestly cringed while watching the episode because his dialogue was so corny they sounded like an old man executive’s idea of a cool guy. But I’m pretty sure that was what they were going for as a joke. But still. *shivers*

Mighty the Armadillo: I wouldn’t mind or be surprised if Mighty and Sonic had a friendly rivalry going on. Hell, in one of the comics I have, Mighty was teasing Sonic over his big ego. So it’s not like such a development wouldn’t come out of nowhere.

Fang the Sniper: Out of all of what I like to call the “forgotten furries”, I see Fang (along with Mighty) as the strongest contenders to be rivals of Sonic. Though I’m not sure if Fang should remain a villain or be turned into a super reluctant anti-hero. Perhaps Bark could be the moral conscience of Team Hooligan that would ultimately convince Fang to do good deeds if the circumstances are dire enough. (Like if some ancient evil is planning to wipe out all of existance or something.) Bean would go along with whatever because he’s a true wildcard, he doesn’t care much about normalcy whatsoever.

Shadow the Hedgehog:

Sonic the Hedgehog: Not much to say that was already said in Sonic’s section.

Silver the Hedgehog: If there were to ever be an anime style training montage, I could see Shadow giving pointers to Silver (and Sonic as well) how to better harness Chaos Control as a contingency plan against whatever threat they’d be going up against during that particular story arc, be it game, comic, cartoon or whatever medium it’s taking place in.

Jet the Hawk: I’m honestly surprised Jet was listed as one of Shadow’s rivals in the first place. Must’ve been related to the plot of Sonic Free Riders or something.

Knuckles the Echidna: I really liked how their rivalry was depicted in the Post-SGW Archie Comics. But remember that thing I mentioned in the Shadow-Silver rivalry section? Well for that particular training session, I can see Knuckles and Shadow as sparring partners in that regard in order to strengthen each other’s innate Chaos related powers. While Shadow would focus on general chaos emerald usage by fine tuning his Chaos Spears and Chaos Blasts, Knuckles would focus more on strengthening his connection to the Master Emerald. Which I assume would give him the ability to manipulate green Master Emerald energy like in that fight he had with Doctor Finitevus or his All-Star Move from Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Eclipse the Darkling: Shadow’s primary antagonist/rival hybrid from the comics. I see Eclipse as the Metal Sonic to Shadow’s Sonic. Plus if Shadow gets his own comic book (or game) spinoff from IDW (or Sega), he would make a great addition to Shadow’s rogues gallery (a subject I will touch upon in a future “K9′s Ramblings” entry.)

Fang the Sniper: Headfanon time! Honestly, I could see Fang and Shadow hanging out at their local shooting range arguing over whether the pistol (Shadow’s preference) or the revolver (Fang’s preference) are the best handguns like the firearms nerds they truly are. This rivalry was inspired by this piece of fanart ( https://www.deviantart.com/tigerfog/art/SegaSonic-Sunset-Showdown-112185195 ) of the two having a good old-fashioned Mexican Standoff.

Geoffrey St. John: Honestly, I could see a rivalry between Shads and Geoff working better than the one Geoff had with Sonic. Especially since ones a government agent working for the Kingdom of Acorn while the other works for the G.U.N. organization (which is very S.H.I.E.L.D. like now that I think about it). A case of democracy versus monarchy if you will.

Silver the Hedgehog:

Sonic the Hedgehog: I’d like to see Silver act more cocky towards Sonic, but in a good teasing way. Plus, I could see these two pulling off a “fastball special” very well.

Shadow the Hedgehog: You know what, maybe Silver would make a great sparring partner with Shadow as well. Since they could practice their own special abilities (Psychokinesis and Chaos Powers) towards each other. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a one-sided deal of Shadow teaching Silver (and Sonic by extension) how to not fuck up the basics of Chaos Control.

Knuckles the Echidna: Can’t think of a clever way to distinguish the Silver-Knuckles rivalry section from the other Triple S entries on Knuckles. I guess Hedgehog/Echidna rivalries go as deep as their Saiyan/Namekian counterparts?

Rouge the Bat: I’m pretty sure she was listed in Silver’s rivals section of the wiki article because of the Sonic Rivals game. But whatever.

Miles “Tails” Prower: Same deal as Rouge above.

Metal Sonic: This one’s kinda more believable considering how headstrong Metal can be with basically anyone he encounters.

Espio the Chameleon: I know they’re good friends and all, but I could see them as friendly rivals towards each other.

Blaze the Cat: During that training session for that hypothetical apocalyptic encounter with a powerful enemy, Blaze would be Silver’s primary sparring partner as a way for both of them to unlock the potential of their latent kinetic abilities. *cough cough cue silvaze moment cough cough*

Knuckles the Echidna:

Rouge the Bat: Knux’s primary rival since the Sonic Adventure 2 days. Though it’s gotten friendlier as the years progressed nowadays. If Knuckles were to ever get a treasure hunting spinoff, I could see their rivalry get more intense in that regard.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Pretty much covered in Sonic’s section.

Emerl the Gizoid: Don’t know much about Sonic Battle’s story, but I’m guessing that the events in that game made them rivals when it came to conflicting goals.

Storm the Albatross: Just like Sonic and Jet, this is Knux’s primary extreme gear rival, other than that, not much going for this rivalry. 

Silver the Hedgehog: I could see Knux and Silver as being secondary sparring partners towards each other. Perhaps they could have a similar relationship to the one depicted in this Sasso Studios ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu28DwBwSDk ) video.

Shadow the Hedgehog: One thing I will say that I didn’t say in the other sections is that their rivalry works on so many levels since both of them are headstrong assholes whose stubborn attitudes can lead to conflict if their goals are conflicted and/or inconvenienced in anyway shape or form. 

Thrash the Tasmanian Devil: Knuckles’s primary antagonist/rival double whammy whose origins lie strictly within the comics. Like I mentioned before, hopefully Sega wins back the rights to all the characters Penders created like how Hasbro won the rights to Shockwave’s name back after that period where he was referred to as “Shockblast” during the Energon show.

Fang the Sniper: Again, if Knuckles got his own treasure hunting spinoff, I could see Fang having a rivalry with both Knux and Rouge over who gets the berried treasure. In terms of occupations, Knux is a Guardian of the Master Emerald, Rouge is a Spy/Thief and Fang is a Bounty Hunter/Mercenary.

Miles “Tails” Prower:

Wave the Swallow: As with Sonic and Knuckles, she is Tails’s primary extreme gear rival and nothing much more.

Doctor Eggman: While the Eggmeister himself may be Sonic’s arch-nemesis, he and Tails are definitely worthy opponents to each other when it comes to being men of science.

Battle Kukku XVI a.k.a. “Speedy”: I would say that Speedy is to Tails what Metal Sonic is to Sonic. In that both of them are minions to a prominent member of their respective rogues galleries. (Something that I will dedicate another “K9′s Ramblings” to sometime in the near future.)

Amy Rose:

Rouge the Bat: Going by the wiki, they really don’t get along well, at all.

The Babylon Rogues (Jet, Wave, Storm): Whoa, I guess Amy really hates these birds as a collective. I wouldn’t blame her, considering how much of a smarmy douche Jet tends to be.

Sally Acorn: I said in the previous post that I like both Sonamy and Sonally, so let me be clear that I think their rivalry would be friendly and on good terms. Okay? Okay. Moving on.

Rouge the Bat:

Knuckles the Echidna: Not much to say that hasn’t already been said in the Knuckles section, that’s for sure.

Miles “Tails” Prower: Well, she did teasingly kiss Tails in the Sonic X adaptation of Sonic Battle, so I could see it working in that regard.

Wave the Swallow:

Amy Rose: Same as in Amy’s section, these two don’t get along very much. 

Vector the Crocodile: I was not aware the Vex and Rouge had a rivalry going on until after browsing the wiki a bit. So here it goes.

Blaze the Cat:

Amy Rose: I see them as friendly rivals. Mainly because I was inspired by this image ( https://www.deviantart.com/mitzy-chan/art/Keijo-Amy-vs-Blaze-667017201 ) by Mitzy-Chan/Blue Chika parodying the Keijo anime/manga series.

Silver the Hedgehog: I can see these two being friendly rivals of sorts. Especially if they’re the kind to tease each other about it. Plus they’d also probably be the types to do some sparring matches as a form of training.

Shadow the Hedgehog: I can see Shadz respecting Blaze’s power/fighting ability and vice versa. Both of them are the serious types after all.

Sonic the Hedgehog: The wiki does list them as “partners in combat”, so there’s that. Plus the Blaze vs Sonic boss battle is super duper anime as hell. It was like a boost/spin dash beam struggle.

Bunnie Rabbot: Honestly, I only put her here because of this shitpost image I saw one time where Blaze got jealous of Bunnie’s... *ahem*... “assets”, if you know what I mean. 

Vector the Crocodile (and the Chaotix Detective Agency in general, but mostly Vex):

Rouge the Bat: If the Chaotix got their own Phoenix Wright style detective crime drama visual novel, then I could see Rouge being adversaries towards them when it comes to breaking the law by stealing jewels.

The Babylon Rogues (Jet, Wave, Storm): I’m guessing this was from the time when Vex filled in for Big on Team Rose during the events of Sonic Free Riders. 

Shade the Echidna: Since she may or may not be based on Julie-Su, I figured I put her as a rival to Vector as a nod to that trivia piece. Plus I was kinda inspired by this fanart pic ( https://www.deviantart.com/knockabiller/art/Throwing-Shade-681549963 ) of them interacting. And look, they’re even doing a fastball special in that piece.

Team Hooligans (Fang, Bean, Bark): Just like with Rouge, if the Chaotix got their own detective spinoff games, then the Hooligans would definitely be adversaries to them. Whether they’d be criminals on the run or gruff bounty hunters working with the law is (somewhat) up for debate.

Smash Bros. Character Merit - Sonic the Hedgehog

Quick Disclaimer: I’m not very confident in any 3rd Party franchise getting a 2nd rep. But being the Sonic fan I am, I thought I’d give a specific section for this should it happen. I don’t think it’s the unlikeliest thing in the world as I’ll explain. But I doubt it comes anytime soon.

Miles "Tails" Prower

My Level of Want

If you didn't already know, Tails was who I voted for in the Smash Ballot. Perhaps it's a little greedy for me to suggest a 2nd Sonic rep over some Nintendo characters that could use some love. But when it comes to the one character I want most in Smash now that Sonic has already made it. Tails is it. Though a bit of a disclaimer, I won't be disappointed one way or another if Tails doesn't make the cut. Cause Sonic was already that dream inclusion fulfilled for me. Every new character that'd made it in Smash that I happen to like since Sonic got in is equivalent to whip cream on my glorious ice cream sundae. But Tails would be the sweet, sweet, sweet cherry on top. Tails is just my favorite Sonic character, and he just happens to be the franchise's equivalent of what Luigi is to Mario. Perhaps he's not treated or even portrayed as well as that nowadays but you'd be pretty hard pressed to suggest that someone else deserves the title of Sonic's Luigi. And what I mean by Luigi, as in the other character that often pops up in your head whenever you hear the franchise's name. The main character always pops in your head behind them, but not far behind them you usually imagine their sidekick, brother, or whichever role the player 2 character plays as right besides them running through the levels. When I think Sonic, I picture Sonic running through levels at a fast pace with his buddy Tails close behind. They're just one of the most iconic duos in gaming and despite being what would be another Sonic rep at face value, I count Tails as much of an icon of gaming as any. There would be naysayers if it were to happen, but Tails is absolutely the most iconic choice for another Sonic rep in Smash. It would absolutely make my entire life to see a Sonic & Tails Vs. Mario & Luigi battle be possible in Smash Bros. It's just one of those things I could die happy knowing that I got to see happen.

Estimated Chance

Sorry if that got a little gush-heavy over my most wanted character. But it's time to delve into a little reality. I'm not confident in it happening much at all, and I'm ok with that. As much as I said things about dying happy about it. Sonic being in Smash in general is also kind of already that. I don't think it's an impossibility, despite the ups and downs over the years the Sonic franchise is still one of the most popular franchises out there and as such the Sonic franchise would be the one to break the mold should they decide to break the only one character per 3rd Party franchise rule. For that to happen a character should have have to be arguably just as iconic to gaming as the main character and I think Tails fulfills that well enough. It might not be quite enough right now but should they look at it by the time Smash 6 (Or again 7, if you're like Sakurai) rolls around that he'll become an ever stronger possibility as Sonic would have a strong foothold in the series. I can keep my two fingers crossed for the two tailed fox. But I'm certainly not going to count on it. I understand that other companies' reps would probably provide more diversity and not everyone wants one of Sonic's "annoying friends" in Smash. So Tails isn't impossible but he's nowhere near a strong possibility. But if it ever happens, it'd be the one character that would probably put me in Etika-was-shown-Mewtwo-DLC kind of excitement

Main Game or DLC?

DLC is the only way this happens at all. It might also provide a little bit of a compromise that don't want any more Sonic characters in the game. If you wouldn't like Tails in Smash, then don't buy him.

My Level of Want

If Tails can't make it, then Eggman would probably be the next best thing. And probably more neutrally accepted even amongst those that aren't big fans of the Sonic franchise if it were to happen since Eggman isn't one of Sonic's "annoying friends". I think the only problem might be a bit more difficulty on deciding how he'd fight. Best I could think of is something akin to Bowser Jr. only bigger, heavier. And in the Egg Mobile with obviously a different toolset. It'd be absolutely fun though to have Mike Pollock record lines for Smash as he's an absolute blast as Eggman. I do think it'd be more fitting if say they ever included a Sonic related Boss rather then as the 2nd Sonic character. But I certainly wouldn't complain.

Estimated Chance

3rd Party franchises getting 2nd reps are going to be quite low in chance. Once we hit the DLC period though anything goes. So who really knows. As for Eggman himself's chances of being the character to break that rule. Not to sound biased but I think Tails out prioritizes him for a few reasons. Maybe even Knuckles before Eggman too. Not that I think Tails is that much more likely (I'll be covering that next actually) But we did get Luigi in Smash before Bowser. You could say that was because Luigi was easier to make because he was more of a clone of Mario back in Smash 64. But you have to think that when it comes to 2nd reps, the iconic 2nd player and/or sidekick tends to get in over the main villain. Even if the Mario example isn't enough. Reminder that we still don't have K. Rool but we've had Diddy since Brawl. As I said earlier I'd rather Eggman represented as a boss should the Sonic series ever include one for any reason. It'd be fun to fight him with all the different characters that way.

I do like Knuckles a lot and if there was room for 3 Sonic characters I might get behind him more. But as is when it’s doubtful if we even get more then just Sonic, Knuckles isn’t a priority to me personally like Tails is. Sonic & Tails is a really iconic duo of gaming. Knuckles is less so. Mainly people want Knuckles because they view him as a more “cooler” or more viable as a fighter despite Tails having been in Sonic fighting games before too. Still, I would feel it’d be like getting Wario before we got Luigi. Wario is more fit for fighting then the “coward” Luigi and is an iconic character of the Mario franchise in his own right. But he isn’t famous Player 2/Sidekick status like Tails is

Knuckles only gets chosen if Sakurai feels a character more well known for seeming like someone to fight over should be prioritized over someone that’s been in there longer whether it’s Tails or Eggman he would be picked over. And I don’t think Sakurai has ever gone that way with anyone. In my dreams, Sonic would get 5 reps to make all the Sonic fans happy. Get Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Eggman, and Shadow in there to appease all the Sonic fan wishes. But I know that only happens if Sega was bought out by Nintendo. And understand that’d be incredibly greedy in a game that’s supposed to be mostly Nintendo

My Level of Want

First I want to say, that Sonic Adventure 2 is still my favorite Sonic game in the franchise. It’s what introduced me to Sonic, I have a lot of fun whenever I go back to play the game and one of my biggest wants for Sonic is a game going back to the Adventure formula that is streamlined for modern audiences. I understand the big complaint with the Adventure games is they haven’t aged that well, but that’s why a modern game with the adventure-style that’s cleaned up to the expectations of modern game could be a good idea for the Sonic franchise to take. My biggest hope is a kind of Sonic Odyssey where like what that game did rediscovered the gameplay of Super Mario 64 and cleaned it up for a new game that most people enjoy a lot. However, despite my love for SA2 there’s one character that made his big debut that’s been a pretty controversial subject. I do first want to say that I did like Shadow a lot… but pretty much only in SA2. He was a perfectly fine character in that game and a good foil for Sonic with an interesting past. And it quickly made him one of the most popular Sonic characters. Unfortunately, Sega took that popularity the wrong way and they forced him back into as many games as possible. At first Shadow returning wasn’t so bad, Heroes implied the Shadow in that game wasn’t even the same Shadow from SA2. Simply a clone that Engman created. But the Shadow the Hedgehog game retcons that. The Shadow in games past SA2 is indeed the same Shadow who somehow got rescued by Engman’s robots on his plunge down to Earth. For the exception of Sonic Battle, every game that’s not Sonic Adventure 2 has him just as one of the most polarizing characters in all of gaming. He has diehard fans that have supported him since SA2 and won’t ever shake off their love for him. But he’s also somewhat become a bit of a scapegoat for hate on why the 3D Sonic games fell as hard as they did. His story bringing too much of the franchise trying to take itself seriously as well as basically the poster child for the edgy meme when it comes to video game characters. He has reasons why he’s very popular, but he also has just as many reasons if not more on why people would utterly despise his inclusion from both the Sonic fanbase and outside of it. Combine that with the fact there’d probably be similar disdain on the level Dark Pit got, and Shadow’s inclusion would be one day where every single Smash Bros. discussion is simply filled with anger.

Shadow’s popularity probably at least had him score among the highest out of Sonic characters in the ballot if not the highest. But I still think Sakurai would choose a more classic character anyway. Shadow’s done fine enough in the Assist Trophy role. Let him stay there.

Nintendo is riding high after the overnight success of the Switch and to keep that hype train firmly on track, it airs another of its promotional Direct packages. Jam-packed with A-Listers like Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Echoes and Arms, the broadcast is a ratings smash!

But in the midst of The Big N’s biggest hits, what got the most attention (at least from fans on the Internet) was the first full gameplay trailer for Sonic Forces. It was pretty good.

Well, we got to see Modern Sonic dash and soar through Eggman’s Bad Future like it was some sort of dystopian rollercoaster, while Classic Sonic got to run the vintage Green Hill Zone obstacle course. Both gameplay styles got ample time to show off their pretty set pieces as well as a satisfying impression of speed, momentum and impact.

Granted, it was only a 30 second clip, but it was a nice little indication that Sonic Team went back to what made these mechanics work so well together in Sonic Generations. Perhaps with some added tweaks, this 2526th anniversary milestone will be just as special as its year 20 counterpart. Or at the very least something that might break the “Sonic Cycle”.

Heh heh. It seems I forgot to address the shadowy figure stoically lingering in the room.

Yeah, as good as the trailer was, it wasn’t the gameplay that caught the public’s interest but rather the captivating secret that brought it to the finish line.

For an entire month, Sonic fans had been trying to solve the mystery of this unknown Player Three’s identity. Then suddenly, SEGA lifted the cowl...*Sigh*

I spent so much time putting it together....how was I supposed to know the reveal would happen before E3?

OK! So, after digging through every hedgehog, fox, echidna, bat, cat, rabbit, flicky and sniper in Sonic Team’s sketchbook, I narrowed my list down to five possible suspects. My findings were based solely on the curious critter’s fashion sense.

Editor’s Note:  Pop monarch shoes, ruffled up socks and Mouseketeer gloves. Yup, it’s a Sonic character all right.

After a rigorous process of elimination, five became two.

Editor’s Note: Uh-huh. “Rigorous.” Looking at ear shapes and checking for patagium doesn’t take a whole lot of time, dude.

*Cough* Anyway, two resisters remained; the iconic pairing of Sonic & Tails, no less. Upon a second glance at Mr. Prower, I thought I had the mystery solved.

Everything from the fashion choices to the shape of his head and whiskers, he seemed like the perfect candidate. Yup, I was confident it was Tails...until I saw this model lacked Miles’ big bushy namesakes - them tails.

That just left Sonic.

I’m quite familiar with that fan theory and I’d be lying if I didn’t also consider him a (somewhat) strong possibility. This whole thing with Eggman ruling the world definitely had an air of Archie to it, and the publisher did commission mock game assets of the Knothole characters to celebrate the Sonic comic’s 2014 revamp. Not to mention the Guinness award winning series is celebrating its own 25-year milestone, so a monumental crossover seemed like a good way to mark the occasion. Also, he was a perfect match for the silhouette. But I had to rule him out.

Editor’s Note: If chilidogs can exist in Sonic Team’s universe, why not Coyotes and Acorns?

Mainly, it’s a matter of licensing issues and “pending” cancellation.

Anyway, that just left Sonic and I think you know where I’m going with this.

Player One is the Sonic we know and Player Two is the Sonic we knew, so I think it would stand to reason Player Three 3 could’ve been the hedgehog Sonic could become.

As I was saying, I had a feeling SEGA may have wanted to celebrate a quarter century of Sonic games by shaking up the gameplay formula, while using the time travel plot device as a segue.

Editor’s Note: Unnecessary mechanical shake-ups has kinda been Sonic Team’s M.O. for like a decade now. You might as well have assumed this “Future Sonic” would be blue.

Look, I’m not talking low end shake-ups like making the levels spherical or adding a werehog. I’m talking a momentous shift on par with The Blue Blur speeding out on his first grand Adventure. If you’d grant me the pleasure, I’d be more than happy to explain it in excruciating detail.

*Groan* It’s the 26th anniversary, it’s a new generation of hardware, and Forces is the first multi-platform Sonic release in over half a decade. So, I figured Sonic Team would celebrate in a big way and what would be bigger than letting this anonymous animal take a new hedgehog engine out for a test spin?

OK, OK. [Clears Throat] During the 16-Bit glory years, The Fastest Thing Alive was a side-scrolling speedster and starting back from his transition into 3D, Sonic’s been turbo driving in tunnel vision from a fixed third-person vantage point.

I FIGURED THE NEXT BIG SPRINT WOULD BE A PERSPECTIVE CHANGE!

Perhaps we’d finally get a taste of the open road strictly from a hedgehog point of view, like say the FPSonic short made by PIPOCA.

Or maybe we’d see the tried and true third-person tracks evolve to include multiple axes, like in the brilliant Sonic Utopia tech demo by Mr. Lange. 

...Or if Sonic Team didn’t want to change too much, I would have suggested it take advantage of the Forces gimmick and allow Sonic Tois to pass the piton to one of his many friends in order clear out enemy lines or solve puzzles. Think an updated Sonic Heroes or Knuckles Chaotix.

Dateline – May 16, 2017

SEGA releases another trailer and it focuses squarely on the identity of the third character. Fans gasp with baited breath as the vale was lifted to reveal...a random wolf guy.

Editor’s Note: Can’t say I saw that one coming.

It felt a tad anti-climatic, even though seeing him use a grapping hook to tie up a couple of giant Egg Robos was pretty cool...I guess.

Editor’s Note: Look man, you were wrong; you got to get over it. Also, now that I think of it, Sonic’s head is much too big to fit the silhouette, so you would’ve been wrong anyway. And don’t say he could have gotten a haircut. Sonic would never tame those quills.

Right. Well, before I could register Wolfy the Wolfboy as a new lead, the trailer got its second, third, fourth and fifth wind with the shocking twist this third player is in fact, an “Original Character”.

You see, this charming customer is just one of thousands of possibilities players can dream up using a nifty creator tool and a little bit of imagination. With a long line of clothing options and a choice of one of seven spirit animals, players will be able to make a character that is distinctive to their personality.

As an added bonus, each of the seven classes has its own unique stat boost.

Wolves have magnetic personalities (rings for days). Dogs bounce back from death with five bonus rings. Cats cheat death by clinging to a single ring after taking damage. Birds are of the flightless variety but can still get air via a double jump. Bears are the heavies of the group and pack a powerful punch with their homing missile. Rabbits get a little extra time to race around with an I-flash damage boost.  And of course, Hedgehogs can pick up the rings they drop after taking a hit.

Editor’s Note: Based on those parameters, I think we might get overrun with re-coloured Sonics...not that there’s anything wrong with that. You do you, Archie did it too, creativity starts somewhere, etc. Speaking of stat boosts and buffs and other such mechanical things, what sort of play style will these OCs adhere to?

Oddly enough, there’s no perspective change or efforts made to shake up everything we know about Sonic. Instead, Sonic Team chose to make avatars playable in both modern and classic styles, but with a twist.

Do you remember the Wisps from Sonic Colors? They’re back...sort of. Throughout the game, each player character will be collecting an assortment of gadget’s called Wispens. Like the Wisps, these trinkets grant special abilities that can be used to take out enemies or to make racing through levels more expedient. 

Editor’s Note: I’m sorry you set yourself up for disappointment.

After thinking on it a bit, this surprisingly safe move was the right one. I don’t want to dig too deep (because that’s a topic for another time) but it took Sonic Team a good long time to get Sonic to run smoothly in 3D. Choosing to step away from all that progress just to give a milestone anniversary some extra publicity could’ve have lead to disaster, much like some of The Blue Blur’s previous gimmicks. Instead, fans are being treated to a neat new spin on what works.

As for the Create-a-Character concept, now that I’ve seen it, I’m surprised SEGA hasn’t capitalized on the whole fan fiction aspect of the fandom before. Sonic surfers can’t go through any social media network, fan forum, or artist alley without finding fan characters of all shapes, sizes, species and colours. With such a cluster of “original” critters, this seems like a million dollar idea.

*Sigh* I would be lying if I said I didn’t have some concern for Sonic Forces. As pointed out by...just about everyone, its fan fiction plotline opens it up for being absorbed into that “weirdness”. That said however, I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to rain on the CAC parade.

The majority of these fanfic authors are youngsters that love this series and day dream of seeing their silly side-characters race side-by-side with Sonic. Forces granting their wish is not only a profitable proposition for SEGA, it also encourages and inspires these kids to continue creating. I would like to think that goodwill offsets any potential *cough* naughtiness. 

Editor’s Note: Now that I think of it, said “naughtiness” would be unavoidable anyway just by virtue of being a Sonic game.

Sonic’s 26-year rat hedge race has certainly been eventful. He’s had some incredible highs, embarrassing lows, and is now riding a stable return through the loop. Every moment of triumph, every stumble, every second wind, every trip up and third wind, The Blue Blur has had a loyal and dedicated pack of fans to run alongside him every step of the way.

They grew up in the trenches together and now they stand tall as a battlefield collective, ready to spin dash their way through the Eggman Empire and onward to freedom!

As a quarter-century celebration of its mascot and the fans that made him an industry icon, Sonic Team (probably) couldn’t have done any better than this.

...At least in the event Forces fails to win the day, Headcannon and Taxman will be there to save us with Sonic Mania.
