On recent plane flights and the quiet moments in between, I powered through Mike Hranica's “Three Dots & the Guilt Machine”, and this is the post card that came with it. When it comes, my inspirations never file in, they swarm me. They take me over completely, and I am changed. They power through me, and through me they are driven into my every day routines. This read taught me enough. It drove me to change who I was, in a very short time. By the time I landed, in a foreign world, I was ready to fell head over heels with the potential of a new life. To try, even when faced with the seemingly impossible throes of distance and time. It taught me to have patience in transition. Enough to love. To care about others. To feel and remember what it was like to be felt. To have a better sense of others, and hope that they will take the time to do the same. Foremost, it taught me to never forget the ones that love you, to never abandon people only because they care. Those who watch, listen and give, are far more adept to take on the strongest challenges that this world has to offer. They know the value of a heart. “Tintinnabulation” - a ringing or tinkling sound”. An amazing word, but quite the opposite of this little force you created, @mkhrnc. As I march forward on work for my next release in September, I am reminded of the couple times we’ve met, and how you guided me to the avenues to get my work published. A Unique Musical Journey: The Story Behind The Devil Wears Prada

It all started with small, local shows in Dayton, Ohio. That is more than likely the story that many start up projects will tell you. However, what separates The Devil Wears Prada from the rest of the pack, is the tale of just how the band found all of its pieces. The true formation of the group. The original founders were made up of Mike Hranica (vocals), Chris Rubey (Lead guitar), James Baney (Keyboard, synthesizers), and Daniel Williams (drums). The band went through a couple bass guitarists through, what I would describe as a series of “trials”. They finally found a match in Andy Trick after a few shows. Enter Jeremy DePoyster, who was essential in adding a rhythm guitar along with a much needed blend of clean vocals to go with Mike Hranica’s growls.

The group established a name not long after the formation was finalized. This name was based on Lauren Weisberger’s book but ultimately was decided because the title perfectly combined their passion for God along with their anti-materialistic views. Front man Mike Hranica had a sit down interview with Christian music expert Kim Jones and opened up further on the choice, "What we believe it to mean is that possessions don't matter at all and someday everyone will realize that this is true. When standing before God, He won't care about your sweet Prada scarf or Gucci shoes or whatever. It's a Christian reasoning for the name, we didn't name it to attempt at being fashionable or whatever”. And with that, the Christian-Metal band was official.

Prior to the release of their first full-length album, the band signed with Rise Records. They stayed with the label through their 2007 release of their second LP Plagues, but left shortly after due to a conflict of interest between the two sides. The band had been mislabeled by fans as being “Screamo” when they had originally wanted to be recognized as this new breed of Metal. So in 2009 all eyes were on the Dayton-bred group’s next release. Having experienced much success thus far, some questioned the controversial change in direction when they signed with Ferret Music, a much less-notorious record label. The guys did not disappoint, however, and delivered what drummer Daniel Williams called, “their heaviest album to date”. I still firmly believe this was the turning point of the band’s establishment of a true identity in sound.

Throughout their constant workload, they really showed no signs of cracks in the armor. 2012 did not usher in the end of the world, as the Mayans had predicted. It did, however, bring in a bit of shocking news to the fan base with the release of keyboardist James Baney. Members referred to a number of “creative differences” as well as the former colleague not being able to commit as much time to practices, recordings, and tours as being the main reasons of the release. The two sides had no ill-will towards one another as they went their separate ways, agreeing that this was in the best interest of the band and its success.

A similar incident came about in October of 2014 when one of the founding members, Chris Rubey made the difficult decision to leave the band in the midst of their ever-growing popularity. The decision was made to spend more time with his wife and daughter back home and was not able to keep up with the overwhelming workload. Along with being the lead guitarist, Chris was also responsible for instrumental composing of the songs being tracked. So needless to say, this was not an easy loss to rebound from.

In the wake of being faced with more adversity, the band later announced that they had re-signed with their original record label and had been in the studio working on tracks for their upcoming Space EP, the group’s second concept EP. They also announced that they had found a fill-in guitarist to replace Chris. Despite touring with TDWP, he has not officially been announced into the band. At the end of 2015, The Devil Wears Prada announced that they were working on their sixth full-length album. It certainly appears that the remaining members do not intend to slow down anytime soon, as they will more than likely set off on a fleet of headlining tours upon finishing the record. Here’s to hoping this won’t lead to any more “end of the world” like news regarding these remaining band members.

My Biggest Inspiration

I get almost all of my inspiration from The Devil Wears Prada. Their lyrics have changed so much over the years and every album offered something new to me. My writing style is very influenced by Mike Hranica, I think.
