Netflix Reveals 90-Game Development Plan as It Outlines Gaming Division Strategic Vision. The Vice President of Games at Netflix, Mike Verdu discussed the company’s goals in his recent blog post. “Two years ago, we started streaming original films; last year, around this time, breakout hit Bird Box stoked our desire to explode a cultural phenomenon on the world,” Verdu noted. Netflix has introduced 40 titles since starting its video games venture. This portfolio includes the imminent release of 'Grand Theft Auto Trilogy - The Definitive Edition' scheduled for December 14, alongside the debut of its first two in-house developed games, 'Night School’s Oxenfree 2: Barrett Eldridge on Twitch vs. Netflix and Super Evil Megacorp in “Lost Signals’; Marlow Stern for the Daily Beast to Compare “Love is Blind” and “Netflix Stories”. Netflix projects to grow its works in the gaming space into 86 by December and emphasises that close to additional 90 games are under development. Although the majority of these upcoming games are yet to be announced, Netflix announced four titles due in 2024. These include 'Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit,’S. Netflix Games is expanding its TV support for Canada and the UK in a limited beta.

The good news is that, unlike TV shows, the games on Netflix cannot be canceled after only two seasons.

Netflix subscribers in the UK and Canada can now access a limited beta test for the platform's video game service on their TVs. This test is specifically for certain TVs, including Chromecast with Google TVs, LG TVs, and Roku TVs.

The beta aims to test the controller and Netflix's streaming capability for games on larger devices. Currently, only two games, Oxenfree and Molehew's Mining Adventure have TV support.

However, Netflix Games VP, Mike Verdu, confirmed that a similar test period for PCs and Macs via the Netflix website will be available in the coming weeks. Verdu stated that Netflix's goal is to make games accessible, smooth, and available on more devices.

This move into video games suggests that Netflix has ambitions beyond TVs and computers and may eventually expand into console and cloud games. However, for this to happen, Netflix needs to ensure that it has a library of games worth playing and reminds subscribers that it has games on offer.

Netflix Is Planning To Add Video Games In Streaming Platform Within Next Year

A report this spring from The Information said that Netflix was seeking an executive to lead its push into gaming, intending to offer an Apple Arcade or Xbox Game Pass-like subscription bundle. Now, as first reported by Bloomberg, the streaming company has hired Mike Verdu as its vice president of game development, reporting to COO Greg Peters.

According to Bloomberg, Netflix could offer games right next to its other streaming content “within the next year” listed as a new genre just like documentaries or anything else, without charging extra for the experience.

Verdu is a former exec who has experience with mobile gaming companies like Zynga, ran EA Mobile for a year, and most recently has been working at Facebook acquiring a series of Oculus game developers like BigBox VR, maker of Population: One.

Netflix gaming forays have included interactive features like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Carmen Sandiego and licensed games including a Stranger Things title for mobile devices. It also currently has a few job listings for positions producing and leading interactive products, postings that don’t mention the word gaming, but show it’s staffing up with people who have the experience necessary to help that division get off the ground.
