Portrait of a man who doesn't know what to do with himself.

I went to work feeling great yesterday, because...I don't know. Mania and mood swings? I felt invincible and I chalked it up to my wiring being supposedly faulty and criss-crossed.

So we have regular customers where I work. Everywhere does. But these are people who are often there 3 times a week, or every Saturday, or whatever suits them. I talk with a few of them, but I'm usually very busy and have no time to myself or for niceties. But there's a few people I see every day, and they've kept up with the saga of my rocker-bottom foot, the metatarsal bones turning counter-clockwise in the center and shifting them any which way.

A father and a daughter who're in every Saturday asked if there was anything going on this weekend. I told them the truth, that I have to go to an orthopedic specialist to stand in a box of foam so it can mold around my feet and custom inserts for my shoes can be made. Most insurance plans don't cover the procedure, and it usually runs somewhere between $250 and $300 (10% off if you pay in cash up front, lol.) They make an astounded noise, and I say I can afford it and it should be fine, just...you know, rice and baloney sandwiches for a little bit, you know? I'm fortunate that I can afford it at all in these trying times. It is a luxury to even have a little saved in 2024.

So they eat, they leave, and minutes go by, almost half an hour. A waitress comes up to me in the back room, privately, and says "someone in the restaurant overheard you and wanted you to have this" and puts what I think is a $100 bill in my hand. I gasp and say "I can't accept this!" and flipped immediately to "tell me who they are so I can return this!" because I was powerfully uncomfortable accepting it. They refused and said that the people would prefer to remain anonymous and that they just want to help. I asked if it was the father and daughter and she shook her head "no" and insisted on not telling me. I didn't press it out of respect and to not put her in an uncomfortable position. You can only refuse a gift so many times before it becomes insulting to the involved parties.

Then I unfolded it and found it was THREE $100 bills and I burst into tears. Had a good, long cry, out of gratitude and immediately diminishing myself, like "I'm not WORTH THIS ACT OF KINDNESS" because that's the way I'M wired.

When I go in on Tuesday, I will ask the waitress plainly that the donors may remain anonymous if they like, but that I would like my gratitude relayed to them, that I want them to know what this did for me.

I'm still processing this act of kindness, this unprecedented windfall of good fortune, and it makes me wonder, because I'm mentally off and strange, if the world will repay me by doing something like burning my house down or making me lose my other foot.

But for now, I'm bewildered and grateful, and am slowly leaning into the idea that I'm someone worth this kindness. The best thing to do, I'm told, is pay it forward.

Storia Di Musica #216 - Mike Patton, Mondo Cane, 2010

Il mese di storie musicali sulle cover e i dischi tributi ho deciso di concluderlo con uno dei dischi del genere più interessanti, inaspettati e deliziosi degli ultimi decenni. È un atto di amore e di ricerca di un’artista che definire poliedrico è dire poco, che come ha sempre detto in molte occasioni si è ritrovato ad avere metà cuore diventato italiano. Mike Patton a San Francisco, città dove è nato, verso la fine degli anni ‘80 sostituisce Chuck Mosely come cantante dei Faith No More, band fondamentale di quei primi avvisagli di mescolanze di genere e stili che verrà chiamato crossover: con 10 anni di vantaggio su quello che la critica definirà nu-metal, cuociono insieme, con la “delicatezza” di una pentola a pressione, metal, rock, rap, soul in un pietanza musicale che verrà poi provata da centinaia di band (penso a Epic, da The Real Thing, 1989, capolavoro del gruppo). Patton mostra subito delle doti canore straordinarie: capacità di cambiare registro come pochi altri, estensione vocale fantasmagorica (si dice sei ottave, che lo renderebbero un cantante unico nella storia), credibilità di cantare davvero tutto, da Sinatra al goth metal. I Faith No More si sciolgono nel ‘98, ma Patton è iperattivo e scrivere cosa fa dopo è impresa improba: mi limito a dire che fa il produttore per centinaia di artisti, fonda almeno 5 band diverse, spesso pubblicando dischi con tutte e 5 quasi contemporaneamente, fonda una casa discografica, la Ipecac Recordings. Nel 1994 sposa la artista visuale italiana Cristina “Titi” Zuccacosta e si trasferisce per alcuni anni a Bologna: parla anche un ottimo italiano e coltiva la sua passione per la musica e il cinema italiano, producendo non solo artisti italiani, prima fra tutti Roy Paci, ma collaborando con la Regione Emilia Romagna ad un progetto con l'orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, formata da circa 65 elementi, diretta da Aldo Sisillo, che lo porterà dal 2007 al 2009 in un tour musicale, con una scaletta tutta composta da canzoni italiane degli anni ‘50 e ‘60. Il titolo del progetto, Mondo Cane, si rifà a quello di un documentario cinematografico del 1962 diretto da Gualtiero Jacopetti, Paolo Cavara e Franco Prosperi, incentrato su usi e costumi inconsueti o scioccanti dei vari popoli nel mondo, che ebbe un certo successo nel mondo (al Festival di Cannes premio per la migliore produzione, nomination ai premi Oscar 1964 per la canzone Ti guarderò nel cuore, di Nino Oliviero e Riz Ortolani). Nel 2010, con registrazioni a San Francisco e dal vivo al festival AngelicA di Bologna, al Teatro Rossini di Lugo, al Teatro Comunale di Modena, al Piazzale delle Terme Berzieri di Salsomaggiore Terme, viene pubblicato un disco dallo stesso titolo Mondo Cane che riprende in parte la scaletta dei concerti e in parte la cambia. La cosa eccezionale del tutto è sentire Patton che canta con lo stesso piglio, intonazione e persino i gesti degli artisti che riprende, e non c’è mai la sensazione che sia un omaggio ironico o sarcastico, quanto sentito e meravigliosamente vissuto. Esempio migliore di questo sentimento non può che essere la cover di Scalinatella di Roberto Murolo, con Patton che canta addirittura in napoletano. Le altre cover seguono un gusto molto particolare: si apre e si chiude con due classici di Gino Paoli, Il Cielo In Una Stanza e una toccante Senza Fine a chiusura, nel mezzo omaggi ai grandi crooner italiani, Che notte! di Fred Buscaglione e Ore d'amore di Fred Bongusto, L'Uomo Che Non Sapeva Amare di Nico Fidenco, una divertente e divertita ripresa di 20 Km Al Giorno di Nicola Arigliano, Ti Offro Da Bere di Gianni Morandi (scritta da Gianni Meccia) e poi tre scelte davvero particolari, indici di un interesse e di un amore quasi tarantinesco per un certo tipo di musica italiana: Quello Che Conta, scritta da Ennio Morricone e portata al successo da Luigi Tenco, è deliziosa, Deep Down è uno dei pezzi più conosciuti del Maestro e faceva parte della prima versione cinematografica di Diabolik, Danger: Diabolik del 1968, film che aveva un’estetica pop meravigliosa che ebbe notevole influenza in quei anni. Ma la scelta più ardita è la cover degli ormai sconosciuti The Blackmen, che nl 1966 pubblicarono un 33 giri dal titolo fortissimo di Urlo Negro il cui testo diceva: lo sai che cosa hai fatto? a me!! (...)\Ti odierò finché il signore non mi porterà con sè…non farti più vedere!!\non meriti più niente!! da me!!Non voglio più un padrone per raccogliere caffè. Partecipano al disco Roy Paci con la sua band, Riccardo Onori, chitarrista e produttore di Jovanotti, e l’Orchestra Toscanini che accompagnerà in giro per il mondo, soprattutto in Sudamerica, Patton in questi deliziosi concerti, in cui si presentava vestito come i film di mafia americani, ma intratteneva il pubblico sempre in italiano. Un disco che trasuda passione e divertimento e una prova d’amore davvero sconfinata: mi chiedo perchè nessuno lo abbia ancora invitato alla serata cover di Sanremo.
