Expectations of Home
Dr. John H. Watson  remembered the day he first saw the flat.
He looked around the place – it felt like he belonged there the moment he entered.
He was running from a ghost of himself – he knew it. It was not the life he expected, but nothing in his miserable life since he was invalided from the Royal Army had given him such a sense of expectation.
He certainly had no way of knowing that the next twenty-four hours would throw him through a life altering loop. He had found his place in the world.
And for a while, life with Sherlock Holmes met those expectations. Great and not so great – and then some. And he would not have had it any other way – save one.
How does a man who has spent the past few years all but shouting -Not Gay!- from the rooftops reconcile that he had fallen in love with his flatmate? Unfortunately, John could not get out of his own head to get out of the closet he put himself in. By the time he realized it and wanted to do something about it – it was too late.
Sherlock was gone.
With Harry still an alcoholic, he had no family to could turn to. He had lost his place in the world. John’s will to carry became was a slow, but definitive downward spiral. One that slowly caused him to cut himself off from Greg, Molly, Mike, Bill Murray, and others in his heartache.
Being a doctor was literally the only thing that was keeping him alive, and even that was becoming a thinning thread. It was not the life he expected – it was one he no longer wanted.
He met Mary Morstan and convinced himself he was in love. He was running from a ghost of himself – he knew it. Moving in was not the life he expected, but it was better than the one he had, better than none at all. John convinced himself to live the life expected of him. He convinced himself so hard, that  not even Sherlock’s return could change his mind. He married Mary and became a father.
And for a while, it seemed life was meeting those expectations. Great and not so great – and then some. And he would not have had it any other way – save one, well two…
He was still in love with Sherlock, and (Rosamund) Mary Elizabeth Morstan’s roosters were about to come home to roost in a big way that no one expected.
He woke up one morning and found himself looking at walls where he did not belong.
There was only one time and one place expectations had not failed him – all he had to do was get over his own worst expectations. He had to find his place again.
It took some time, but he did.
The widower looked around the duplex he had shared with Mary for the last time.
Their luggage waited in the taxi at the curb. With Rosie in his arms, John closed the door to the life he once expected to have and locked it; never to return.
Next stop Baker Street.
Finally, he was not running from something, but toward the best of expectations.
John kissed his daughter’s head.
“Let’s go home.”

2023 Character Wrapped
@geralts-yenn and @raccoon-eyed-rebel tagged me to talk about my favorite characters. And well, this is just too good not to pass up. So, join me, won't you?
Let's rank my favorite characters! (Based on # of times I have written them).
Under the cut to keep my ramblings off your dashboard...but you just know there are bunch of Henry Cavill-shaped bitches under this cut.
But, in what order??
Alright, let's get this party started with...
Walter Marshall - Night Hunter
Tumblr media
I feel like this is absolutely no surprise that I've written the most for this grumpy bear. But, I just call him Daddy. Whether he be touch-starved, an enemy turned lover, falling in love like a love-sick puppy, taking a little "me time" for himself, or being the goodest boy as werewolf Wolfie. Even wrote a headcanon about his hobbies.
2. Clark Kent - Man of Steel, BvS, Justice League
Tumblr media
I have loved the character of Clark Kent since I was a little thing, I'm obsessed with curly-haired nerds. Clark also is the only character I have written "fluff" for, be it praising what you think are flaws or surprising you for your birthday. I have written him as a Sub and as a Dom (in my only work that has surpassed 1k notes).
3. August Walker - Mission: Impossible - Fallout
Tumblr media
I've never written August as the good guy, and there is a reason for that. In my head, he's the life-ruiner. He can be sweet (to you), but odds are he just killed a guy because the guy looked at you for longer than a second. I've written August as a pissed-off Dom who was sick of being interrupted, a very bad Daddy, and an Uncle who takes advantage of his nephew's girlfriend here(original) and here(director's cut).
4. Captain Syverson - Sand Castle
Tumblr media
Oh, Syverson. My baby don't even got a dayum first name and he's popular. I've written him confronting a lover during a post-apocalyptic pregnancy realization, and as a married father-to be getting his beard trimmed and talking to his unborn daughter. He's also featured in my Werewolf!Walter Marshall story, and that's all I'll say about that. (Also, I've been referring to him as James Syverson in every iteration of the character that I have written for - I think.)
5. Mike - Hellraiser: Hellworld
Tumblr media
My sweet baby boy. He is a guilty pleasure. I gave him a full series where he finds love and has quite the cast of characters as his family. But, technically, I only wrote the series because of what happened here and here, when his naughty Uncle slept with his girlfriend.
6. Napoleon Solo - The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Tumblr media
He's just so fucking sexy. I love him, your honor. He's been a suave and sexy older man wooing a young student over a good meal, and also started a series where he was falling hard for a woman in his apartment building (still in the early stages and I promise @deandoesthingstome that I will get back to this series).
7. Sherlock Holmes - Enola Holmes series
Tumblr media
I have also loved Sherlock Holmes since I was a little kid. I thought he was the coolest person ever, but he's a curly-haired nerd so of course I loved him. I love when Sherlock is in love, whether he is ignoring his bratty wife until he takes matters into his own hands, or if he is having trouble coming to terms with new love.
8. Charles Brandon - The Tudors
Tumblr media
This little shit. This redeeemable, sexy, fucking slut. I love him. I've only written him once, and it was a request! But, I enjoyed it. I loved writing him getting teased sexually and then taking control of the situation. So hot.
9. Humphrey - Stardust
Tumblr media
Ok, not actually a fan of Humphrey, I've just written him. And that was all thanks to @sillyrabbit81's milestone celebration at the beginning of this year. This fic is kind of a weird egg, just, go with me though. The plot is: you and Humphrey are step-siblings who end up getting a little...involved. I'm not sorry for the title of this fic.
And to our last entry, the only non-HC character...
10. Lloyd Hansen - The Gray Man
Tumblr media
What can I say? If I had the means, and I guess I really do but whatever, I would rank this man at #2 above Clark Kent. Because Lloyd-excuse me...Sir is one of my all-time favorites. I've included him inside larger stories as a bit player, see Bright Like the Moon (where he plays a bad man later in the series). But, I also wanted him to have his own show where he was the star, so I had him stalk and kidnap a girl and tie her up in the basement and call her Sunshine. I also wrote a little headcanon about his family, quirks, hobbies and his sleeping habits.
TL;DR: Walter Marshall is Daddy, Lloyd Hansen is Sir. And I need to finish one series before starting another. Maybe I will work on that. *snort*
I have written for a lot of characters, and I'm not gonna stop. I really wanna write so much more and my WIP folder is literally overflowing with things. I just started a new fic like the day I posted the most recent chapter of THiCC. What am I doing??

[Reddit thread on r/redlettermedia, post by u/banananutnightmare]
Theory: Was Jack and Jill (2011) a front to rescue Katie Holmes?
My fellow hack frauds,
It's beyond speculation at this point Adam Sandler produces cheap projects to get his friends paid big money. In the Half in the Bag review of Jack and Jill, Mike observes that in 2011 Katie Holmes isn't seen much outside the tabloids anymore and thinks she was in this film because it was one that her husband Tom Cruise, notoriously controlling, would give his permission to, simply because it would be a fat paycheck.
But why did Adam Sandler choose Katie Holmes? The women who played his partners in his most recent preceding films were Jennifer Aniston and Leslie Mann (both very experienced comedy actors) and Salma Hayek (if you can pay anyone to pretend to be your wife, you cast Salma Hayek, makes sense). The couple of love interests after Katie Holmes were Drew Barrymore and Academy Award Winner Susan Sarandon (both very experienced comedy actors) and Salma Hayek again (Salma Hayek). He's also been friends with Aniston since they were kids and has hired Barrymore repeatedly since she sought him out and begged to work together. It makes sense they're on his list of loyal buddies who make it on the payroll when they want a job.
So why Katie Holmes?
We now know that Katie Holmes secretly, meticulously planned her divorce from Tom Cruise. She had to repeatedly meet with lawyers, secure a secret getaway apartment, bank account, cell phone, to ensure a quick, safe escape with full custody of their daughter. All without him, or the Church of Scientology, suspecting a thing.
As Mike repeatedly points out, Holmes was given "nothing" to do in the film. The job provided her not just money but, maybe it even more importantly provided an alibi. Maybe Jack and Jill was a cover that gave her an excuse to be out on the loose, but also gave her enough free time since she hardly had any lines or need to rehearse real acting, that she could meet with lawyers and plan her escape.
I think Adam Sandler hired Katie Holmes for this reason. This was the last project Holmes would work on before her divorce a few months later. I would even go so far as to suggest he slapped the whole film together specifically as a cover for her.
I also don't think this is the only time he's done something like this. The following year he cast sports reporter Erin Andrews in a small role as a receptionist in That's My Boy (2012).
In 2008 Andrews was stalked by a man named Michael Barrett who filmed naked videos of her through peepholes at a Marriott hotel in Nashville and again at a Radisson in Milwaukee. In 2009 he posted the Marriott video online. She filed lawsuits against Barrett, Marriott, and Radisson. Employees at the hotels told her stalker what room she was in and gave him the room next door, how he was able to film in the first place. When Adam Sandler hired her, she was simultaneously trying to get the video removed from websites, was fired from ESPN for refusing to talk about the incident on air, and was fighting Marriott's army of lawyers in court. (She eventually won her suit and $55mil years later.) A nice paycheck for an easy job would've been a big help, and I don't think there's any other logical explanation for the film to exist, other than to help Erin Andrews when she was in such a desperate situation.
What if all of Adam Sandler's terrible money laundering scheme movies are fronts he tosses together ASAP in order to provide fast help to victimized women?
Is Adam Sandler a secret hero?
[Comment  section]
undead_tortoiseX
I choose to believe this just because it would make the world just a little better.
THECapedCaper
Honestly most of hi projects are him just hanging out with his friends while they all collect a steady paycheck.  When he's dialed in as a director or actor he really shines, but if he can shit out a 3/10 movie in two weeks to help someone then hey more power to him.
undead_tortoiseX
Right, and it doesn't have to be an either/or decision.  He could be running a project just to hangout with his friends while also occasionally casting someone who could desperately need the opportunity in their situation.
-
Kabe59
He single handedly keeps Rob Schneider fed and well
AsaltGrain
He only does it single-handedly because Schneider bit the other one clean off.
-
chupathingy99
With all the horrible product placement, you'd need a swarm of lawyers to be on set at all times.
One of them could've been a divorce lawyer.  You might be on to something.
-
JohnnySodapop
I reject reality and substitute this.
bubbasawyer3
I reject your hypothesis!
-
BlackSpinedPlinketto
I really like this, it's very sweet.
I've been judging him on the content of his movies which was disgusting and sexist.  Instead you can tell he's a smart guy who has worked out a formula for success, and used it to furnish his friends with money and nice location jobs.
-
Jungies
I firmly believe that the only reason Richard "Jaws" Kiel was in Happy Gilmore is because he was old, and in ill-health; and Sandler knew giving him a couple of lines in his movie would re-up his Screen Actor's Guild health insurance.
TL,DR: Adam Sandler's a bastard.
Numitor453
Angela Lansbury did the same thing with Murder, She Wrote
badluckartist
That woman was a fucking angel.  Rest in power, you murderous queen.
I choose to incorporate this into my worldview.

Larry Holmes (November 3, 1949) is a former professional boxer who competed from 1973 to 2002. He grew up in Easton, Pennsylvania, which led to his boxing nickname of the Easton Assassin.
His left jab is rated among the best in boxing history, held the WBC Heavyweight title (1978-83), the Ring magazine, and lineal heavyweight titles (1980-85), and the inaugural IBF heavyweight title (1983-85). During his only title reign, he defended his title against 19 fighters, the second-most in history behind Joe Louis. He holds the record for the longest individual heavyweight title streak in modern boxing history. He is one of only five boxers—along with Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Leon Spinks, and Trevor Berbick—to defeat Muhammad Ali; he is the only one to have stopped Ali.
He won his first 48 professional bouts, including victories over Norton, Ali, Earnie Shavers, Mike Weaver, Gerry Cooney, Tim Witherspoon, Carl Williams, and Marvis Frazier. He fell one short of matching Rocky Marciano’s career record of 49–0 when he lost to Michael Spinks in an upset in 1985. He retired after losing a rematch to Spinks the following year but made repeated comebacks. He was unsuccessful in four further attempts (against Mike Tyson in 1988, Evander Holyfield in 1992, Oliver McCall in 1995, and Brian Nielsen in 1997) to regain the heavyweight title. Holmes fought for the final time in 2002, aged 52, against the 334lb Eric “Butterbean” Esch, and ended his career with a record of 69 wins and 6 losses, all of these in title fights. He is ranked as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time and has been inducted into both the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame.
He married Diane Robinson (1979) with whom he has two children. He has three daughters from two previous relationships.
His younger brother, Mark Holmes, was a middleweight boxer (1980-87).[#africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Among my OCs, there's actually a variety. (sorry, this is going to be quite a big list)
Yuri & Victor - They couldn't decide who should take whose surname, so they decided to hyphenate and go with Okamoto-Nelson. They both officially changed their surnames to that, and their daughter Caroline also has the hyphenated surname Okamoto-Nelson
Rei & Kenji (Yuri's parents) - Rei took Kenji's family name (Okamoto). Yuri, Hana, Shirayuki and Kinai all have the surname Okamoto too.
Grace & Julian (Victor's mother & stepfather) - Grace took her first husband Thomas' surname (Nelson), but hyphenated when she married Julian, so she is now Grace Nelson-Britt
Leo & Ellie - Ellie decided she wanted to hyphenate, so after marrying Leo she became Ellie Britt-DeLuca. Nora and Elliot both have only their dad's surname (DeLuca).
Stephen & Millie (Leo's parents, Grace's brother & sister-in-law) - Millie took Stephen's surname (DeLuca) when they got married (yes, I do have two different OCs named Stephen). Their kids, Leo, Kiara and Alessandra are all DeLuca as well.
Takahiro & Fox - Takahiro kept his own surname (Suzuki) when he and Fox got married. All their kids have Fox's surname (Abbottsford)
Seiji & Sachiko - Sachiko took Seiji's surname (Hinamori) and their kids also have the surname Hinamori
Félix & Davian - They kept their own surnames, Blanchet and St-Jean when they got married. Their daughter Belle has Félix's surname (Blanchet). St-Jean is one of her middle names.
Dylan & Zahir - They kept their own surnames; Middleton and Omar respectively. Their son Junior only has Dylan's surname. (bonus: Dylan's lover Nadim would like to change his name completely, and of course eventually have the surname Middleton).
Zahir & Zainah - Zainah has never changed her surname, either with her first husband or with Zahir, since it's customary in her culture for wives to not change their surnames.
Artie & Emma - Emma took Artie's surname (Greene). Their kids' surname is also Greene.
Stan & Milena - Milena took Stan's surname (Kovac) and their daughter Alzbeta's maiden surname is also Kovac. (bonus: Alzbeta took her husband's surname too, which is Zelenka).
Mikhail & Elena (Nikolai & Natascha's parents) - Elena took Mike's surname (Pavlenko) and the twins are also Pavlenko
Natascha & Alex - They're divorced now, but Natascha kept her own surname because she didn't like how "Natascha MacDonald" sounded.
Nikolai & Anya - They're divorced now, but Anya took Nikolai's surname (Pavlenko) when they married, and she still uses it.
Nikolai & Mishka - This one's possibly a bit more interesting. Mishka wanted to take Nikolai's surname, but that would make him Mikhail Pavlenko, which is also Nikolai's father's name. So, officially he remains Mikhail Vasiliev, but he still likes to think of himself as Pavlenko. Their son will also have the surname Pavlenko.
Ginger & Liam - They're divorced. When they married, Ginger kept her own surname (Holmes) rather than taking Liam's (Harris)
Stephen & Sarah - Sarah took Stephen's last name, Fujikawa. She's still using it, despite the absolute public spectacle their divorce was. Mostly, she kept it as a way to distance herself from her identity as a former J-pop performer. Their son Sebastian also has the surname Fujikawa.
Ginger & Stephen - Ginger is debating whether or not she'd like to be Ginger Fujikawa, or if she'd still keep her original surname. Any potential children would get Stephen's surname, though.
George & Evie (Eden's parents) - Evie took George's surname (Seong) and all their kids have the surname Seong too.
Sakuma & Koko (Haru's grandparents) - They each kept their own surname. Koko's is Imamura. Sakuma's is Abe, which is also Haru's surname.
Just curious, for those who have OCs that get married:
Do they do any name changing type stuff? Whether it's taking one or the other's surname or creating their own surname together?

❤️‍🔥 Wings of Fire the Graphic Novel: The Dragonet Prophecy (1) by Tui T. Sutherland and Mike Holmes
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
A few years ago I read the first WoF book, THE DRAGONET PROPHECY, and it was really good. I never continued the series, but today I saw the first graphic novel adaptation at the store and got it. I wanted to get a recap of the first book before I start the second novel in the series.
Here’s our story! The land of Pyrrhia is at war after the dragon queen has died, her three daughters fighting for the throne. A prophecy is announced by the mysterious Nightwings, claiming that five dragonets will end the war and save Pyrrhia. As these dragons hatch and grow, things begin to change and the truth and more mysteries are revealed.
This adaptation was great! It reminded me of all the things I liked about the first novel and the designs of the dragons and coloring was fantastic. Obviously, there were some parts of the narrative that were left out and some of the more violent scenes were toned down, but I enjoyed it a lot. This is a great way to get young readers into a series; adapt it into a graphic novel!
I’ve decided to read the second book, THE LOST HEIR, and then read the graphic novel adaptation of that one, too.

Not gonna lie: i;ve been waiting for this moment lkajsdflkasjdf
Penelope Wilson seemed like the incarnation of the expression ‘if looks could kill’. Pure sulphuric acid couldn’t melt the obvious look of disdain from this woman’s face. Her father, on the other hand, opted for the more traditional glare.
i'd be shaking, crying and puking if i had to face these people
Sherlock found himself with similar prayers, as there was not a doubt in his mind that Napoleon or Charles would have breezed through a dinner like this.
Sherlock is me whenever I meet new people and I think about my social ass friends literally breezing through the conversation and I'm sitting there like a sims character, waiting for instructions
“We always hear you practice, we were bound to get curious as to why we endure that, right?” Marshall answered.
HAHAHA
“I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it’s because Charles isn’t shagging their daughter,” Marshall whispered, "which is a nice change of pace for him, don't you think?"
Marshall's one lines are fucking amazing
“I’ll have you know I was a debutante,” she said with a hint of arrogance to her voice.
One time I read this duology about girls who were also debutantes and ended up in jail and every time I hear or read about debutantes, i automatically think about that series - anyway that literally adds nothing, but I hda to get it off my chest
"Sherlock Holmes kissing someone, I never thought I'd see the day."
"And in public, no less," Napoleon added.
"Like that," Mike chimed in, "there's definitely tongue involved there..."
"Can you blame him," Charles said, "she's fi-" It was far too easy to guess his intentions regarding the end of that sentence, and it was plenty for Sherlock to interrupt his current activities and turn around to face Charles.
Not me tearing up because the guys are so proud of their little baby sherlie
“Did he now?” Everything about her voice screamed that she found that far more attractive than she should ever admit to in public, which Anjelica, Dani and Solveig picked up on immediately, judging from their failed attempts at hiding their laughter in suspicious coughing, or behind their hands. The boys, however, largely seemed to remain clueless - which was probably for the best.
No, but this reminds me of those tiktoks, where girls make these videos about: ALL THE GIRLS KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. and she looks up in three different ways and you just know EXACTLY what each look means (like one means 'ew', the other means 'help me' and the other means 'oh he cute af') and I feel like that just sorta happened here lol
“Elena, pardon my saying so, but your mother is an absolutely exhausting woman.”
What a proper way of saying that you hate her guts

Everything seemed to be ready for the New Year’s concert, except for Elena. She was - for lack of a more charming description - a jittering bundle of nerves, sat on the edge of a desk backstage, chewing on the skin around her fingernails, paying her environment no mind. That last thing she did so thoroughly that she failed to notice two things: The first was Sherlock, who sat next to her on that desk and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, the second was much worse.
“Elena, darling!” That was the voice of her father beyond a shadow of a doubt. Which meant her mother couldn’t be far behind.
“Sit up straight, sweetheart!” There she was. “And who might this be?” Sherlock, who didn’t get nervous before performances and therefore was in full possession of his mental faculties, had in his ever so great wisdom dropped his arm from around her shoulder the second he heard someone call her ‘darling’.
“This is Sherlock Holmes,” she said after taking a deep breath and getting up from the desk, “Sherlock, my parents; Theodore and Penelope Wilson.” Penelope Wilson seemed like the incarnation of the expression ‘if looks could kill’. Pure sulphuric acid couldn’t melt the obvious look of disdain from this woman’s face. Her father, on the other hand, opted for the more traditional glare. When he reached out his hand to make Sherlock’s acquaintance, it was almost a threat.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, sir,” Sherlock took his hand without hesitation. It was possible that he was simply blissfully unaware that he had anything to fear from the man, though it made more sense that his mother’s interesting upbringing finally proved useful - half of it had been rather rigid and proper, the other half, however, had been nothing short of an absolute circus. Sherlock’s way of greeting Elena’s parents seemed to diffuse the situation to a certain extent.
“Quite rare, nowadays, to come across a young man with a sense of propriety,” Mrs. Wilson remarked after Sherlock had let go of her hand, too.
“I will be sure to pass your compliments on to my mother,” Sherlock replied courtly. Elena could tell from the expression on her mother’s face that she was not yet impressed with the man in front of her. A predicament easily remedied through answering the question that she knew lay on the tip of her father’s tongue.
“And what do you do, Sherlock?”
“I am in my third year of law school,” Sherlock said - and much to Elena’s surprise, he stopped there.
“You’re being far too modest, Sherlock,” Elena said softly as she offered him a sweet smile and prayed he would tell her parents the rest.
“Elena…” It was clear that he was not intent on bragging to her parents, meaning she would have to do it on his behalf.
“He is also in his second year of his bachelor’s degree in philosophy,” her father slowly raised an eyebrow, “and takes courses in psychology,” as did her mother, “and he is the first violinist for the orchestra.” Sherlock smiled awkwardly. Whenever people boasted about his intelligence or musical talents, he felt like an aberration, though in this case he recognized that Mr. and Mrs. Wilson were the kind of people who wouldn’t readily think anyone well-suited for their daughter.
“And how old are you, Sherlock?” Her mother asked, curiosity sparkling within her eyes. They were the same shade of green as her daughter’s, Sherlock recognized.
“I am eighteen, Mrs. Wilson,” Sherlock answered, “soon to turn nineteen.” Elena could tell that her parents were impressed, and though she felt happy about that, she couldn’t help but feel guilty for parading Sherlock around the way she had. From the look on Sherlock’s face, however, she could tell - or at least reasonably assume - that he understood. There was only one question that could throw a spanner in the works, and of course her serpent of a mother was quick enough to ask it.
“What are you to my daughter, Sherlock?” The woman watched closely and with sourly pursed lips while Sherlock deliberated the proper answer to this question. Elena knew him to be caught between a rock and a hard place, having to please her mother with a steadfast answer that would prove him dependable, while not conveying any untoward intentions to her father in the process.
“I would like to call her my girlfriend,” Sherlock said to Penelope before turning to Elena, “if you will allow me to do so?”
“I’d be more than happy to,” Elena said. When Sherlock took her hand and pressed his lips to her knuckles, she giggled.
Tumblr media
“I can’t believe they asked you to join us for dinner!” Elena exclaimed after she had skillfully ejected her parents from the backstage area of the theater.
“I can’t believe I accepted,” Sherlock groaned. His experience when it came to having dinner with people’s parents was limited, and apart from having hoped he would be able to keep it that way, he was also fairly sure he would be next to useless at it.
“I can’t believe my boyfriend,” she put a lot of unnecessary emphasis on the word, “is so afraid of making a fool of himself. I thought Sherlock Holmes paid no mind to what others think of him?”
“They’re your parents, I feel they are more important than most others.” Of course he was right. To her, it wasn’t as if their relationship depended on the approval of her parents, but she suspected that Sherlock was perhaps slightly more old-fashioned that way. The realization shocked her.
“Sherlock, their acceptance of our relationship doesn’t matter to me, I want you to know that,” she said as she wrapped her arms around him. He trembled in her embrace and hardly returned her affections.
“It does to me, Elena,” he whispered. In fact, the blessing of her parents - mostly her father, he had to admit, though he would think twice to ever mention it to his mother; she'd surely give him an earful - mattered so much that he wasn’t quite sure whether or not he could continue their relationship if he knew her parents didn’t want him in her life. To him, everything was hinging on that dinner. Elena took his face in between her hands.
“Don’t say that, please,” she whispered in return. There were tears in her eyes.
Tumblr media
The restaurant was very nice, to put it mildly. One might say it was a venue of the posh variety, which was perfectly suited for Elena’s parents. Sherlock was subjected to a particularly thorough interrogation all the way through dinner. He answered their questions politely and honestly, but with a sense of modesty that irked Elena beyond belief. She regularly wormed her way into the conversation with compliments at his address, secretly wishing her boyfriend was a bit more of a… pompous ass, frankly. Sherlock found himself with similar prayers, as there was not a doubt in his mind that Napoleon or Charles would have breezed through a dinner like this. Charles’ family was old money whereas Napoleon’s love for the finer things in life had driven him to master the kind of social protocol needed in the circles that surrounded themselves with those pleasures, and while Sherlock had certainly be raised to possess a sense of propriety that some might deem archaic, his mother had always made sure to steer him away from anything she deemed ‘hoity-toity’. In that regard - at least according to his mother - he had no doubt fared better than his brother Mycroft, who, over time, had become a tad too big for his britches. That being said, Mycroft, too, would have had no trouble whatsoever surviving this dinner and effectuating a favorable outcome.
Tumblr media
“What are you all doing here?” Sherlock asked. None of his roommates had ever shown up to see him perform, therefore he didn’t immediately consider the possibility they were here for him. He’d known August and Anjelica would be there, however, but he had been blissfully unaware that the others would show up, too.
“We always hear you practice, we were bound to get curious as to why we endure that, right?” Marshall answered.
“Besides,” Mike added, “some of us have girlfriends who get sad if we don’t take them out on dates.” Dani elbowed him in the ribs for that one, but calmed down instantly when Mike wrapped his arms around her and kissed her temple. The comment seemed to put Sherlock at ease, and he looked at Mike with gratitude. He didn’t enjoy being the center of attention, and while he found it a lovely gesture that they had come to see him, it did make him feel a tad awkward.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost, mate,” Charles said as he slapped him on the shoulder.
“Elena’s parents are here,” Sherlock sighed, “I had to suffer through dinner with them.” The guys groaned in solidarity - most of them knew what it felt like, the others could roughly imagine it as something they never wanted to go through.
“How bad was it?” Anjelica asked curiously.
“It wasn’t bad, per se, they just don’t seem to like me much,” Sherlock said. The answer made Anjelica grimace. If these people didn’t approve of a man like Sherlock - who she admittedly didn’t know much about, but enough to have come to the conclusion that he was a gentleman through and through - then what in Heaven’s name would it take? She was about to get her answer directly from the source, as Elena and her parents approached the group, and mingled in their conversation. Sherlock could tell that the presence of his housemates greatly worsened Elena’s nerves, and he carefully took her hand in his, hoping no one saw.
Mrs. Wilson seemed immediately taken with Charles, which worried Sherlock greatly.
“Why do they like him, and not me?” He asked his friends when Elena’s parents were once again safely out of earshot, being guided to their seats by Charles.
“I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it’s because Charles isn’t shagging their daughter,” Marshall whispered, "which is a nice change of pace for him, don't you think?"
“What does it matter if they like you?” Danielle asked.
“They want what’s best for her,” Sherlock replied, “and if they don’t think that includes me, then how can I?”
“Well, you can’t do worse than my ex-girlfriend,” Elena said. A scornful laugh escaped her. “I mean, at least you’re a guy.”
“You’re…” Sherlock looked at her in surprise at what she had just said.
“Bi. I never mentioned that?” Elena was genuinely surprised it had never come up. Sherlock shook his head in reply to her question. “Oh, well, now you know.”
“Back to the issue,” Anjelica interrupted, “I can try to find out what they think of you?”
“Can you do it subtly?” Elena inquired nervously. Anjelica snorted derisively.
“I’ll have you know I was a debutante,” she said with a hint of arrogance to her voice.
“And is this the first time that has ever come in handy?” August asked, earning himself an elbow to the ribs. “You can all take that as a ‘yes’.”
Tumblr media
Despite Elena’s nerves, she played beautifully - which she found hard to believe even after everyone had told her a million times. Well, almost everyone. The fact that her mother immediately resorted to harsh criticism of her performance, diligently listing all the things they felt needed improving, before moving on to speak ill of the acoustics of the theater, wasn’t the least bit helpful. She showed absolutely no qualms holding her monologue in front of everyone. Elena’s face lit up as Sherlock handed her a small bouquet of white carnations in the middle of her mother’s furious tirade about the terrible seats, the terrible lighting, and the terrible everything else.
“Mother!” Apparently, Sherlock’s gift gave her the courage to interrupt her mother’s Soliloquy of Doom. “If we are to list everything you found subpar about the performance - mine or anybody else’s - we might as well take a seat because we are all going to be here for a very long time. I suggest you save it for the drive home.” It was impossible not to hear the hurt in her voice as she said it. It didn’t take long for her parents to leave after that little outburst - though in all fairness, they had a fairly lengthy trip ahead of them.
Tumblr media
After they left, Anjelica held up another flower. Sherlock took it from her, his smile displaying an edge of insecurity and doubt as he handed Elena the red carnation.
“I had August take that out for fear your parents would see it and know what I meant by it,” Sherlock said carefully. Elena smiled, immediately understanding what he was trying to say. It was as likely her parents would have perfectly understood the subtle message of a greater level of intimacy than the sentiment of sweet, innocent love conveyed by the white flowers as it was unlikely that they would have approved of it.
“Now that your parents are gone, can I still call you my girlfriend?” He looked very nervous all of a sudden, as if he expected a negative reaction.
“Of course,” she replied with a shy smile, “why wouldn’t that be okay?”
“We’ve only been going out for two weeks,” Sherlock pointed out. Elena chuckled. He would have been right in saying it had been only two weeks since they had first kissed, but she wouldn’t necessarily disregard all the time they had spent together before then, or so she argued. It was a reasonable argument, but not quite enough to convince Sherlock.
"But we were friends," he retorted, his voice thick with amusement.
"Maybe you were," Elena replied, "I was flirting with you starting after maybe the first rehearsal in your room."
"But I wasn't aware of that," he said, the amusement in his voice traded in for sadness.
"And that's why it's only been two weeks since we first kissed."
"You mean to say we could have been doing that since the beginning of the quarter?" The smile that lay on his lips sounded all too clearly in his voice, and was visible in his eyes. She loved it when he smiled like that, and it made her fall in love with him all over again.
"If you hadn't been such a clueless goof? Yes."
"Listen, we tried absolutely everything in our power," Charles suddenly said.
"Alright," Sherlock said to Elena, "I can apologize, or I can try to make up for lost time. You choose."
He hadn't even finished speaking the sentence or her arms were wrapped around his neck and her lips touched his. Sherlock recognised the voices of all his roommates - and their partners - in the small cheering crowd he was trying not to pay attention to. Their excitement was understandable, as someone would indubitably point out sooner rather than later. To Sherlock’s surprise, it was Marshall. He wasn’t usually one to meddle in others’ business.
"Do you remember what I told you last week, or do you need me to remind you?" There was a dark edge to his voice that caused the hairs on the back of her neck to stand up. She’d be lying if she said it didn’t also turn her on immensely. Charles raised both of his hands while taking a step back upon hearing the undertone in Sherlock’s voice.
“What happened last week?” Elena inquired, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
“Nothing,” Sherlock replied, but that answer clearly wasn’t enough for her.
“Oh, I mentioned I’d been getting worried I’d have to take you off his hands,” Charles said casually, “and your boyfriend threatened me with grievous bodily harm.”
Tumblr media
“Full house tonight, huh?” Sy asked as they all started walking in the same direction when they came out of the theater. Suddenly, everyone’s eyes were on Elena, who looked as though she hoped the ground beneath her feet would disappear. Luckily, Dani elbowed Sy in the ribs.
“She’s learning,” Marshall laughed.
“Mike,” Sy growled, but the way Mike looked back at him stopped him from saying whatever it was that he had been planning on saying.
The rest of the walk back to the house was peaceful enough, although Sherlock caught some wistful looks from Marshall, aimed at any of the guys who had an arm wrapped around a girl.
“Are you okay,” he asked carefully, only to be met with a growl and a ‘fine’ that didn’t sound fine at all. Sherlock decided it would be best not to press the matter: neither he nor Marshall were great conversationalists, especially when it came to serious matters, and he felt he wasn’t necessarily the right person to further investigate what was going on. Instead, he pulled a shivering Elena closer to his side and kept walking.
Next to them, Mike and Dani were discussing a movie they were planning on watching when they got home. Sherlock was surprised to hear Elena break into their conversation, saying she hadn’t seen it either, and had been meaning to. She gave him an inquisitive look when the invitation to watch it with them came. As much as he was looking forward to spending the night with her, he gladly accepted.
“Mind if we join you?” Anjelica asked, not bothering to ask August if he had other plans for the evening. “Anyone else?” If all the women in the world had the confidence of Anjelica Madden, men would be done for. Sol and Geralt accepted the invitation, the rest opted out on account of being single and very much unwilling to have that rubbed in their faces.
“Are we really going to stuff the eight of us in one bedroom?” Dani asked hesitantly. It’s not that the house was small, but it would still be on the awkward end of ‘very cozy’.
“I was going to suggest the living room,” Anjelica answered. Elena and Dani looked at each other.
“There’s a living room?” they asked simultaneously. As it turns out, 179th Crescent Street did have a living room - though neither Dani nor Elena had ever seen or heard of it. If Sy was to be believed, that was because they had been preoccupied with their boyfriends, but the simple truth was that it just wasn’t used much. That, and what Sy said.
Tumblr media
The living room was definitely more comfortable for the eight of them than any of the guys’ rooms would have been. Soon, it was abundantly clear why the others had declined the offer to join them. Mike had terrible taste in movies, but he could spot a good horror from a mile away - not that he didn’t enjoy the objectively dreadful ones. Had the girls been fighting over legroom on the couch before, now they were curled up against their boys so closely that there was actually plenty of room in the middle. Sherlock took a minute to observe the others closely. Dani looked genuinely scared, and Mikey chuckled every time something happened that startled her and she crawled even closer to him, pulling the blanket she had confiscated closer around her shoulders. Sol didn’t seem fazed in the least, but still gladly took the opportunity for some socially acceptable snuggling. When he focused his attention on Anjelica, he found out rather quickly that she was faking her fright. August was most definitely aware of this, and couldn’t have cared less if his life depended on it. Much to his surprise - and, if he was completely honest, his dissatisfaction - Elena seemed to have adopted a similar technique.
“You know I’ll still hold you if you aren’t scared, right?” Sherlock said. “You don’t have to pretend.” His tone was casual, and his remark closely followed by three dark chuckles from the other guys. Elena rolled her eyes - more at herself than at him. She could - and should - have expected him to point it out.
“As long as that’s the only thing she’s faking,” August said lightly. For some reason, the remark caused Sherlock to blush while the others laughed.
Tumblr media
By the time the movie finished it was nearly midnight, and everyone was - or at least looked - tired. Everyone made their way to their respective rooms, and both Sherlock and Elena were glad that other than a suggestive wink from Mike as he said goodnight, no one said anything. After changing, Sherlock went back downstairs to brush his teeth, only to be met upon return with a softly sobbing Elena. She was curled up in his bed, facing the wall, hiding beneath the covers.
“Elena, what’s wrong?” He got in behind her and pulled her into his arms.
“It’s nothing.” As far as Sherlock was concerned. Crying, by the very definition of the word ‘nothing’, did not qualify as such.
“You’re obviously lying.” It wasn’t a question. In fact, it was a fairly harsh - albeit true - accusation. Elena recognized how little sense it made to keep Sherlock at arm’s length, and she turned around, wrapping an arm around him and hiding her face in his chest. For a moment, they just lay there, and he gently stroked her hair and her back.
“It’s my parents,” Elena finally said. The sound of her voice was positively dripping with exhaustion, and not the kind, per se, that was fixed with a good night’s sleep. “Sherlock, please don’t leave if they decide they don’t like you. At this point, I don’t even think they like me.”
“Elena, pardon my saying so, but your mother is an absolutely exhausting woman.” Sherlock had been fighting the urge to say that out loud all night, and he finally couldn’t hold his tongue any longer. Of course it was still far more polite than some of the other things he wanted to say about her, but he found it best not to push his luck.
“My father isn’t much better,” she sighed, “but on the positive side, he did say you were a ‘fine young man’ when I walked them to their car.” Her eyes almost drifted shut halfway through her sentence, and she struggled to stay awake.
“And your mother?” Sherlock had absolutely no clue as to why he asked - it wasn’t as if the answer could possibly be anything good, so why was he curious about it?
“Outright suggested I go for Charles or Leon, instead.” There was a smile on her lips as she said it, and it stayed there until she finally let her eyes fall shut and drifted off into a deep sleep.
Sherlock, on the other hand, found himself with quite a lot more trouble falling asleep. It didn’t come as a surprise to him that Penelope Wilson didn’t approve of him, but he wasn’t quite sure how he felt about that. Elena didn’t seem to care much, and it had become relatively clear to him during the past evening that perhaps her parents - at least her mother - didn’t have her best interests at heart, after all. They seemed to put an unnecessary amount of pressure on her. The memory of her voice when she had told her mother off for criticizing everything about the concert rose to the front of his mind, and he found himself clutching his sleeping girl closer to his chest. She was safe there, he’d make sure of it.

Hi Feya, do you know HC characters age?
August is 34 according to his Wiki page and Henry was indeed 34 when filming the movie. (Though, still a boomer).
Clark is 33 in man of steel and in BVS he is about 35.
Napoleon was 16 when he enlisted in 1945, which means he was born in 1929. TMFU takes place in 1963 which makes Leon 34.
As for the rest... there is no clear indication only assumptions!
Mike is possibly 21 as he is in college and in the US drinking is only allowed from 21.
Syverson I assume is mid to late 30s as being a captain in a special forces unit takes several years of service and it looks like Sy has been on the job for a little more than a couple of years.
Walter I’d assume is between 35-37 as he is well established in his job, divorced and has a teenaged daughter who is about 12 years old? It means he had her in his early 20s.
In the Enola Holmes books, Enola is 14 and Sherlock is 20 years her senior. But Millie is 16 in the movie so I think it’s safe it say Sherlock is 37.
I’d like to think Will Shaw and Randy Lee James are 26-28.
Melot is probably about 18. And maybe Theseus too?... or at least very early into his 20s.
Evan I’d assume is around his early 20’s, like 23.
Charles was probably in his early morning and 20s in the first season of the Tudors but the timeline of the show is really messed up 🤣
Dear Humphrey... is umm okay 20?
Geralt is about 100. GILF.

Top 10 2021 Books - thanks @eldritch-elrics for the tag! In no particular order.
Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte) – LOVED this. My favorite part is the childhood sections but really it’s just a wonderful book, highly recommended. Jane is such a unique and well-developed character. She'd be good friends with my beloved Marian Halcombe in an opposites attract way.
Vanity Fair (Thackeray) – RAWDON MY BELOVED. Somehow he managed to be everything I hate in a male character, then poof he shows affection towards his son + devotion to his wife + a capacity for change and boom, I’m in his pocket. Becky is probably the character most normal people go for but I couldn’t forgive the things she’d done. Just ugh.
Three Men in a Boat/Three Men On a Bummel (Jerome K. Jerome) – reread – LOVE this book – highly recommended! The humor still holds up. Three idiots on a boat trip on the Thames and a bike trip through Germany. Three Men on a Bummel is eerily prognostic.
Ivanhoe (Sir Walter Scott) – surprisingly good! A bit hard to get through the faux Olde English but it’s easier to read than Don Quixote. Rebecca Rocks! Ulrica My Darling! Two great female characters out of three ain’t bad. It’s also got a lot of offensive stuff in it but it was probably progressive for its time (you’ll know what I mean if you read it. Isaac, you deserve better than the author insinuating you’d choose money over the daughter you clearly adore and not thanking the guy who helped save her life!).
Shadow Over Innsmouth (Lovecraft) – a reread - I got to read an actual paper version of it in the beautiful Lovecraft treasury my friend bought me for the holidays. The creeping horror! The decay and freaky mating rituals and that freakish priest and the chase sequence! The treasury has his original draft in the back and I’m looking forward to see how different the two are.
“The Hunger” (1996) (Len Kaminski) – reread - Just the absolute best Venom story ever, hands-down. The intensity! The intimacy! The insularity! It would be perfect if not for the puzzling symbiote design. Romance! Handholding! Date night! Cannibalism! It’s got it all. “Couldn’t live without it, couldn’t live with what’s it’s become”! Eddie going full-on commando to save Symby or die with it! Just the best.
Hot Water (PG Wodehouse) – I reread a bunch of other Wodehouse books but I know for sure I reread this. It’s one of his better early ones and just fluffy perfection.
The Caves of Steel (Asimov) and I, Robot and The Naked Sun. Caves of Steel was the best, though the other two were good. I threw The Robots of Dawn straight in the trash, probably the first time I’ve ever tossed a book instead of donating.
Weapon – a DK book - technically I haven’t finished it yet – it’s this amazing book about ancient/modern weapons from around the world.
A book I won’t give the title of but it was vintage photos of my neighborhood from around the turn of the century. Really cool.
Honorable mentions:
Sherlock Holmes’s London – book about London during Sherlock Holmes’s era, social conditions, police, wars, etc + stuff about Holmes and Doyle
Venom (Mike Costa) – reread - finally bought this, including the last copy of the 2016 run of Lethal Protector available online. Going to count this run as a book (it’s like five volumes!!) – not sure what else I can squeeze in here that I haven’t said elsewhere. I’ve got little quibbles but overall it's great. This would make top 10 but I already had a Venom comic.
Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) – didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. I liked the second half a lot better, when the focus zoomed in on Jane. I think I’ll like it better on reread but her family is mostly insufferable.

Donald King (born August 20, 1931) is a boxing promoter, known for his involvement in several historic boxing matchups. He has been a controversial figure, due to a manslaughter conviction and civil cases against him, as well as allegations of dishonest business practices by numerous boxers.
He was born in Cleveland, where he attended school and graduated from John Adams High. After dropping out of Kent State University, he ran an illegal bookmaking operation out of the basement of a record store on Kinsman Road and was charged with killing two men in incidents 13 years apart. The first was determined to be a justifiable homicide after it was found that he shot Hillary Brown in the back and killed him while he was attempting to rob one of his gambling houses. He was convicted of second-degree murder for the second killing after he was found guilty of stomping to death an employee. While he served his term at the Marion Correctional Institution, he began self-education; according to his own words, he read everything in the prison library he could get his hands on.
He was pardoned by Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes, with letters from Jesse Jackson, Coretta Scott King, George Voinovich, Art Modell, and Gabe Paul, among others, being written in support of him.
His career highlights include, among multiple other enterprises, promoting “The Rumble in the Jungle” and “Thrilla in Manila”. He has promoted some of the most prominent names in boxing, including Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Tomasz Adamek, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Chris Byrd, John Ruiz, Julio César Chávez, Ricardo Mayorga, Andrew Golota, Bernard Hopkins, Félix Trinidad, Roy Jones Jr., Azumah Nelson, and Marco Antonio Barrera.
His wife, Henrietta, died on December 2, 2010. He has one biological daughter, Debbie, a son, Eric, an adopted son Carl, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
