What is Yascony Hill?
Yesterday a new comment on Identity Crisis 3 clued me in to something I'd never heard before about SMT4: The name "Yascony"--and that it's mentioned in a strategy guide. Obviously meant to evoke "Yasukuni", it's where the game begins with the protagonist and Issachar just chilling near its lake. Sure enough, the guide in question that contains it is the mini-guide that was included with the US first edition of the game; I could find no mention of it in the Japanese guide, artbook, or World Analyze tomes, though it's totally possible i overlooked it (check them out on Vesk's archive if you want!). Without corroboration from a Japanese source, it makes the authenticity somewhat hard to gauge, but the name itself is localized in English in the same style as the other areas of Mikado (a deliberately askew romanization as an attempt to match that the familiar Tokyo districts' names are rendered in Katakana in Japanese):
キチジョージ, Kichijōji = Kiccigiorgi
シンジュク, Shinjuku = Shene Duque
....et al. I honestly forget the others. But it should then follow:
Yascony = Yasukuni, ヤスクニ
Since the name follows that pattern, I find it hard to believe it would have been invented by Atlus USA. And, then, why would the American branch name a location after the controversial Yasukuni Shrine? Something is obviously missing here, or I missed a mention of it in JP. It fits the game's Japanese nationalist themes all too well. Weird.

The S282 from the train sim game Derail Valley, interpreted as a prop built in the first two or three seasons of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends.
I tried to imagine how a prop builder would actually put something like this together on a children's TV series budget. Like the other original props, this one uses kitbashed parts from Marklin model trains as well as plastic card bodies and sculpted faces. The chassis is taken from a Marklin BR55 0-8-0 and the pilot and trailing wheels, and cylinders, modified from a Marklin BR78.
There are some design changes to make it just look more Thomas, like the thomas style headlamp, the flat prominent buffer beam, and the blocky red-sided footplate. The geometry has been simplified as it needed to be made out of folded, bent, and cut plastic card.
More details and alternate versions under the cut:
The actual locomotive as it appears in Derail Valley: Simulator. Note the much larger cylinders. They could have built more proportional cylinders--they did so when they built Murdoch in season 7, but I wanted it to fit in better with Henry and Gordon.
The valve gear shown is accurate to the BR55, not to the BR78 Gordon and Henry use nor the game model (which has much thicker rods)
Other details, like the air pump (not needed on sodor, which seems to use vacuum brakes), bell, and dynamo (again, not used on sodor) have been removed. The ladder detail on the running board has been simplified. A cowcatcher is not needed, but i kept it as more or less the only obviously foreign feature of the engine. The electric headlamp on the top of the S282's smokebox has been replaced with a white
The S282's tender is a four wheel tender on a pair of freight car trucks. The thomas version is a six wheel tender based on Gordon and Henry's.
The livery was changed to make it feel more Sodor. The sides of the running board were painted red, and red lining was added to the boiler bands, cab, and tender. And 282 was given as a number on the tender, in red-lined yellow text. The wheels retain the red paint of the model that contributed their wheels, but dulled a bit by weathering. The game model has black wheels with white walls and red counterweights, but that didn't look right with the small counterweights on most of the wheels and the one single large counterweight on the number three axle.
With so many red accents, the loco bears more than a passing resemblance to Hiro from the cgi series, though this is only a coincidence.
Here's a variant with a game-accurate livery. No striping, and the wheel spokes are black with white walls and red counterweights.
Here are squeaky clean versions of both liveries.
and here are NWR green, blue, and red variants. I actually made a texture pack for the previous major version of Derail Valley, before they updated the model and the UV maps changed. (obviously my texture pack did not go so far as to add faces)
Final variant, the ES&DT version. [sniff sniff] can you hear a guitar riff slowly building tempo?

I just finished episode 7 of Shou, and Izaya's phone call to Mikado is very interesting to me. He initially calls to antagonize Mikado, or at least it seems like it with how he criticized Mikado's response to the Dollars going off the rails again and his strained relationship with Masaomi.
But really, it seems more like genuine advice to me than most of the bullshit Izaya goes on about in the series. I'll be real, I personally think Izaya is more honest with Mikado than anyone else in the series. When he gives him advice, it feels a lot less manipulative than his "advice" for any other character. This is especially true compared to how he is with Masaomi. Every bit of advice Izaya ever gives Masaomi is wrapped in riddles or culminates in some sort of arm-twist to get him to do what Izaya wants. Sure, Mikado is part of Izaya's plan to awaken the head, but it seems like he has a vested interest in Mikado ultimately coming out on top. I wonder why that is? Perhaps the fact that Mikado is a direct parallel to Izaya himself within the high school trio? Izaya clearly sees himself in Mikado, and wants to support him in a way he probably didn't have when he was up-and-coming himself.
It especially comes through to me at the end of their call this episode:
"You're a good person, and that's something to be to be respected. But didn't you start the Dollars because you got bored of being respectable? An escape from the ordinary—isn't that your dream? That's why I'm worried about you. I said it before, didn't I? To enjoy an ordinary life, you have to constantly evolve. But that's definitely not something you should try to do by yourself."
Izaya ends the conversation by insisting Mikado call him by his given name, a sign of friendship and equality, and reminds him that he has lots of people in his corner—Anri, Kida, and him. It's especially notable to me that Izaya doesn't reference himself as an exclusive authority here, and even sites Masaomi (who doesn't get along with Izaya) before he references himself. If it were really a manipulative tactic to keep Mikado under his thumb, he wouldn't have suggested Mikado communicate with his friends about the problem. Hell, in the original run, Izaya's WHOLE PLAN was centered around these three NOT communicating.
What's also notable is how Mikado takes that advice. He thanks Izaya in earnest, and later reminisces how he used to think Izaya was sketchy, but he now believes he's nice.
Orihara Izaya is nice. To Ryuugamine Mikado.
I think that's kind of an important facet of Izaya's character, that he is capable of caring for others. He's just a little chosey about who in his circle actually gets that care.
#I'd touch on ASPD Izaya and Baby ASPD Mikado connections but that's headcanon stuff#the broker speaks#durarara!!#durarara#durarara!! x2 shou#drrr!!#drrr#orihara izaya#izaya orihara#ryuugamine mikado#mikado ryuugamine#izaya#mikado#meta

Old Number 5 - Corvallis, Oregon
Baldwin Locomotive - September 2006
From a 2022 Reddit Post by versuchsflakwagen about the locomotive:
Georgia Pacific #5 a 2-8-2 "Mikado" type engine, built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1922. Under the Baldwin designation system, it is a 12-30 1/4 E 85 engine. It was given road number 5, and was completed and delivered to the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Co. on May 6 1922. At some point, it (I have not been able to find an exact date) it was acquired by the Alaska Junk Co. (located in Portland, Oregon). Later, in 1956, it was purchased by Georgia Pacific and put to work in Toledo, Oregon on a recently acquired line of track going from Yaquina-Toledo-Selitz-Monmouth. In December of 1959, it was abandoned, and the following year, 1960, was gifted to the City of Corvallis.
According to the plaque located at the engine today, the date of said exchange was September 28, 1960, and was done through the Corvallis Lions Club. Ever since then, it has been on public display at Avery Park in Corvallis, Oregon. Some railings were added on to the engine in order to make it a safer place for children, as well as many of the interior aspects being welded shut. It periodically receives new paint, and all in all, it is very well taken care of, and sits on some specially laid track. The thing is living out its retirement in absolute bliss. It's 100 years old now, and has been a local landmark and favorite spot for over 60 years (long enough that there's a black and white photo of it there in the park).
Here is a screenshot from the Baldwin Locomotive Works documents detailing the construction and detailing of this locomotive, and the full docs can be found here (page 128 in the pdf, 198-199 in the original book). All the SMU Baldwin archives are here. Also, since there's so little info, I'm just kinda blindly trusting this site for the basic info, so if I'm completely wrong, then sorry."
