Just a Scratch

Warnings: mentions of injuries and blood

Nervously pacing in the hallway outside you and your mate’s bedroom you bite your nails. Azriel had winnowed him and Rhys into the foyer of the Town House over an hour ago, Rhys bleeding from a gash in his abdomen. Upon seeing the injury you shrieked and immediately went to get Madja.

You didn’t do well with blood or medical situations. You get queasy at the sight of a paper cut so it was best to stay out of the room when the old healer patches any of the boys up. Especially Rhys. You get very emotional seeing your mate hurt.

The door quietly opened and Madja shuffled out, her worn leather bag hanging from the crook of her elbow. You give her a worried, expectant look. She takes your free hand in her comforting, warm ones. “He’s fine dear,” Madja said softly. “He just needs to rest tonight so the stitches won’t rip.” You breathe out a sigh of relief. You knew he’d be ok, but still.

“Thank you,” you whisper. Madja nods and turns to Azriel who appeared from the shadows. He offers his arm to her and begins to walk Madja out. Azriel nods to you, telling you he’s got this and to go see Rhys. Once the pair were on the stairs you rushed into the bedroom.

Rhys was sat in his armchair by the hearth. He had changed from his leathers into comfortable loose pants, his long luxurious black robe—the silver embroidery on the cuffs and collar seeming to sparkle in the firelight, and he had decided against a shirt.

You could see the bandage wrapped around his lower abdomen along with bruises that littered his torso. Your eyes were briefly distracted by the muscles and swirling Illyrian tattoos peeking out from beneath the silky fabric. Slightly shaking your head to break your trance you focus on Rhys’ injuries.

Clearing the short space between the two of you, you drop to your knees in front of Rhys. Your face contorted in pain for him. Lightly running your hands across his exposed skin you look up at Rhys with sad eyes. “Oh my love.” You breathe out.

Rhys caresses your face with his large hand giving you a small smile. “I’m okay darling. I’m right here.” You shake your head slowly. Rhys sighs, holding your hands and guiding you to stand with him. “I can’t believe you got stabbed. And through your armor! I thought it was supposed to keep you from getting stabbed. Cassian said the scales were stab proof, this isn’t stab proof. It should be called stab resistant. Cauldron, I can’t…”

Rhys playfully rolled his eyes, dropping his robe from his shoulders dramatically. His entire torso was exposed, rippling muscles, swirling tattoos and all. Your breath caught in your throat. Your eyes going comically wide at the glorious sight before you. There was another bandage wrapped around his left shoulder. “Look at me darling.” He said quietly, grasping your chin between his fingers.

“It’s nothing but cuts and bruises.” With his free hand he takes one of your hands, laying your palm flat on his smooth chest. “See. My heart is still beating for you. This is nothing, I swear it.” You feel your mouth go dry. Even after all these years Rhys’ body and voice still make you flustered.

Licking your lips you fumble for your words. “So umm….ahh…h-how, how long do you have to be wrapped up like that?” Rhys’ smirk grew as he leaned down to connect his lips to yours. Your arms slip around his neck pulling him closer until your chest to chest. You can feel his heart beat against yours. The bond humming with joy that you two are connected again. Pulling away, Rhys rests his forehead against yours.

“You need to rest, my love.” You whisper. “Will you tend to my wounds, my darling?” A breathy giggle leaves your lips, “Of course, my love.”

All the art and animations I'll be working on in 2023!

Hi, everyone! We're entering a big new year, and I'd like to make a few announcements about all the different projects I'm planning to start and release in the coming year! First of all-

College Adventures will have its final season! Not a big surprise, but I do plan to journal my final semester in college to round out the series- it's been a crazy four years and I can't wait to close them off with you all! I already have several episodes planned! One of which being a REALLY BIG INTERVIEW with an extremely famous animator I managed to land!

Fanart for new releases: JoJo Part 9 will release in February, and hopefully Pokemon Adventures will round up ORAS in their volumes, SwSh in their magazine releases, and hopefully start SV soon! Which of course, means more JoJoMon content! And with more Gen 9 announcements hopefully coming this Feburary with Pokemon Day, I miiiight be able to free up some time and ideas for short voiced animatics too! No promises on that one, though. Do expect a lot more Pokespe content this year, though! Will I make a Pokespe Vines & Memes 3? Hmm... not that soon, but not never!

Pokeani content? Probably not, but who knows? Maybe Riko will surprise me, or maybe she'll also have to suffer 25 years of character assassination * shrugs *

The Guardians of the Galaxy marathon and my final moments with the MCU: I haven't formally announced it, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will by the final MCU project I watch, since James Gunn is moving on to DC and I want to end my MCU experience on a guaranteed high note. In honor of this, I plan on marathoning every film or special that the GotG have appeared in (GotG, GotG Vol 2, Infinity War, Endgame, Love and Thunder, and the GotG Holiday Special), and journaling down all my thoughts on every little character moment and easter egg and why I love this particular wing of the MCU so much. On top of that, you know I'll definitely be making tons of fanart for GotG3 when it drops, and I even have plans to make a voiced animatic in the leadup to its release, even if I'll be extremely busy with animation finals at that time- just because I love this series so much.

Wishful Thinking (Animated Short): I'm really sorry for still being so in the dark on this, but even though I'll be finishing up animation on the short before May, due to legal reasons I can't actually put it on Tumblr or Youtube until it finishes making the rounds at film festivals maybe sometime next year. I'll definitely see if I can put together a trailer at least, once I know for sure what the actual release date will be! I really hope everything goes well with this though- It's my biggest project ever and over three times longer than my last animated short, Flo's Cat Chase, so I really hope a lot of people watch it and like it Q_Q

More voice acting content for other people's projects! While these announcements may also take a while to come out, I will say that I have landed several decently-large voice acting roles in other projects, too! I'll definitely post proper announcements for them here when they come out!

The Great Unknown: Since I graduate from college this May, the rest of the year will probably consist of me moving across the country and trying to find a job- no idea how this will impact my content output, but I hope to spend all my time not working or job hunting making more comics, animations, and voice acting bits to expand my portfolio! I'll try my best to expand my YouTube channel during this time, too! Hopefully I can get a bit closer to my dream of becoming an animation showrunner!

Why did you make a blog dedicated to posting Sonic characters?

Sonic has been a franchise close to me pretty much ever since I was born. I grew up watching my brother play the games on GameCube and Wii, so I have a sentimental attachment to the series. Said attachment has stayed throughout my life in one way or another

You’re correct! SonicCharOTD started off on Twitter back around 2022 and lasted until 2023! Said account got nearly 10k followers, so if you’re a Twitter refugee from around that time, I wouldn’t be shocked if you thought this blog was familiar! I’m the same guy! So don’t jump to any accusation of me ripping off someone, you’d just be wasting time

Why are you here on Tumblr? Why not just continue on Twitter with your existing following?

Short answer: Twitter was terrible for my mental health and I lost access to the email. So I quite literally cannot go back to that account even if I wanted to

Longer answer: I have some regrets with how I ran the Twitter account. I treated it more like a Sonic side account than the gimmick it was, so I didn’t run it the best. Add to that I was 17-18 during my time running an account I didn’t know would get so popular, and it didn’t exactly mesh well. I don’t want to attach myself to that account in particular due to remembering how terribly I used to run it. It ended up with me losing some of my Sonic hyperfixation drive, so I took a break from the series until fairly recently (You can blame Sonic X Shadow Generations for my brainrot returning)

I probably will occasionally talk about my opinions on the series (Especially with my ask box open, which y’all can use to ask my opinions if you desired) as well as actively go out of my way to reblog fanart/news, but I’ll intentionally ignore any signs of drama in the fandom unless it’s important to bring attention to. This blog will focus almost entirely on positivity for a series a lot of people enjoy

Can we submit other SEGA related characters?

aa alright so, this might be a long post 

i’ve got 2 main universes that i’ve developed (+a few characters that i haven’t put anywhere), but i haven’t fully planned any of them out so all of this is subject to change (please note that literally most of this is developed in daydreams)

universe 1 is a kind of fantasy type thing with 2 main protagonists, icarus (formerly known as idly by before i changed his name haha) and adelheid. basically icarus is an amnesiac that adelheid found in the forest after he fell from the sky. this universe i’m thinking of making a comic but i literally have basically none of the story actually planned haha. i know bits and pieces of what i want the plot to be and i have the character backstories mostly figured out though, so hopefully i can actually. try to plan out the story haha. (i know i posted a comic page a while ago that i wanted to be the first page but i have reworked what little i have of the plot so much since then so it’s not really accurate anymore.) icarus i’ve drawn a lot (i’m actually working on one of those art style challenge things with icarus but i’ve been “working” on it for over a month so who knows if i’ll actually finish it haha) and i know i have some drawings of adelheid that i posted a whiiiile back but i haven’t posted any of her recently because i’ve been wanting to redesign her but i cannot get her color scheme right. other major characters with designs personalities and backstories include eden, dante, and rosie (there are definitely more and i know i’ve posted drawings of them before but i need to plan them out a bit more before i’m comfortable sharing about them aaa)

in this picture, from left to right, we have icarus (pre-amnesia, you can tell because he got the glasses after the amnesia), eden, and dante.

eden and dante were icarus’s friends from before he got amnesia, however their friendship might not have ended on the best note. they’ll show up again later in the story, i just don’t entirely know how (i used to but i spend so much time reworking this story that it wouldn’t make sense any more i have reworked these characters to such a degree that they may no longer resemble their original forms). rosie was also someone who knew icarus before, but their relationship is somewhat more complicated. i don’t actually remember if i’ve posted any drawings of rosie though? i miiiight actually need to redesign her haha

a big worry i’ve had for this universe is that i’ve spent too much time developing icarus and not enough time developing adelheid. i’ve got adelheid’s backstory down, but it’s a lot simpler and i haven’t even given a name to literally the most significant character in adelheid’s backstory so. and adelheid’s personality has really fluctuated over time so maybe i should actually get that nailed down as well. 

here’s how much these characters have developed! eden used to have short hair, dante used to be a conspiracy theorist, adelheid used to be an elf, and icarus’s design was repurposed from a sona i tried to make (the design was repurposed because i wanted to show it off but like the sona was a dude and i wasn’t actually out to anyone yet so i was like “alright he’s like a fantasy secret agent now code name: idly by”. as you can tell i changed quite a bit about him)

universe 2 is... actually i don’t know genres well enough to confidently say what it is. it’s dystopian? kind of? it’s got a fallen world type deal, but it’s also kind of fantasy? but like, sciencey fantasy. it’s something. magic is science is magic type deal. the protagonist here is nebulous. not nebulous as in the word, nebulous is literally the name of the character (i just don’t want to capitalize it haha)

i used to post tons and tons of art of nebulous, but i’ve been drawing him less lately because i’ve been drawing another character. 

anyway so, nebulous actually does not look like this for most of the story, he actually looks like a normal human being in the beginning and then he kind of gradually becomes what’s in the drawing, but this version of nebulous is a lot more fun to draw haha. he’s supposed to also have an actual human name too but i am. so bad at naming characters

basically the main story of universe 2 is that there was like a crisis 17 years ago and the world has fallen into ruin and for that entire time nebulous’s mom literally would not let him leave the house so nebulous is basically that one gif that’s like “they’ve never been outside” (i don’t have it saved so i can’t add it to the post haha). his mom just leaves and never comes back one day though so nebulous does leave the house and when he does he finds out that the town has been kind of ensorceled by...

this dude! (this is kind of an old drawing but i still like it so it’s here)

this dude doesn’t have an actual name yet because, again, i am awful at naming characters, but one of my friends has dubbed him “the wretch”.

basically the wretch can’t like, mind control (listen i’m still working on the terminology here) nebulous so he kind of bullies him into working for him until nebulous finds out that if he touches the ensorceled people they go back to normal and then after that nebulous literally forces the wretch to have a redemption arc (i’m planning on having it go on for most of the story and i’ve literally spent soooo much time planning this out in my daydreams)

after that nebulous and a few un-ensorceled people have to figure out what caused the crisis 17 years ago and how it relates to both the current happenings of the world and nebulous himself. i plan on this universe having more of a video game like structure, i may actually make it a video game if i ever learn how to make a video game haha. 

if it was a video game, the final boss would be...

the king of rot! (this is reeeeeeallly old but it’s literally the best picture of the king of rot that i have because i hardly ever draw him so this is my second most recent drawing of him, my most recent being him from behind.)

i honestly kind of feel apprehensive about sharing anything about this dude, because his whole backstory and motivations are one big spoiler for the story as a whole and i don’t wanna share too too much about it in case i actually do something with it. sorry if you were looking forward to that premium king of rot content, though i can tell you that he is also supposed to have a human name but i don’t feel bad for not coming up with it because that would also be a spoiler haha.

anyway whereas universe 1 has a bunch of underdeveloped characters for me to work with universe 2 has a character deficiency. if i want to develop any new characters i first have to create them *shudders*. this universe boasts a total of 6 characters so far, and 2 of them i literally created yesterday. those 2 are wayyyy underdeveloped because they’re so fresh, but there is one more character i can show you from this universe

this is dr. alexander petrov, he’s actually a repurposed character from another universe that i kind of dissolved because i didn’t know what i wanted it to be aside from this character and 1 other character (who i may repurpose for this universe as well i haven’t decided where he would fit best yet though)

i’m still working on repurposing his backstory properly (because i need to make it fit better with the world he lives in) and i mayyyy have to make him older (i really need to practice drawing older characters though) though i’m still not sure yet.

anyway aside from my 2 main universes i also have a bunch of assorted characters that i don’t know what to do with haha. i’ve posted art of most of them before, but i don’t really want to put it on this post because it’s already really long haha.

Hello Hello! And welcome, I’m so glad that you like my content!I’m going to take this moment to essentially create a big huge post of all the places where one can go and find my various works.

Most of my works are fully independent and do not need to be read in any order to understand what’s going on. I may have several stories in any given universe, but generally they follow characters that aren’t related, it’s simply the setting that is the same.So starting off with my SFW comics and where you can read them:

I have “It’s an Odd Kind of Fairytale”, a modern fantasy adventure following two girls who get powers by gods, and subsequently go on a quest to prove that they are worthy of these powers. Currently has 5 complete chapters, around 150 or so pages, and has been on hiatus for a while but it is my SFW comic project over on my Patreon, and Chapter 6 has 4 complete pages which you can read ahead. I won’t be updating this until I have Chapter 6 complete.

“The Wizard’s Shadow” is a current comic I’m sort of kind of working on, though “It’s an Odd Kind of Fairytale” takes precedence as my SFW Patreon project. It follows the story of Essie Woodseer and Kinji Moritaka as they go to Kinji’s homeland to try and avenge his master. Stellar Jewels is the next comic that’s going to be made, I have the script and thumbnails done for this 20 page comic and that can also be accessed via the $5 tier on Patreon. Since I currently work at a pace of 2 NSFW pages and 1 SFW page a month, if I start in February, then this comic will be done by November ish, though if more people support me I can double my page output and maybe get two whole Aberrant Tendency Comics finished per year?

Unfortunately, as it stands, these NSFW comics are not anywhere publicly, though when I do get to posting them (after I’ve got about 3 or 4 comics completed) the SFW pages will be posted to Tapas, and the full comics will probably be posted to either Twitter (Haven’t decided if my SFW or NSFW) as well as pillowfort. A few years down the line, if I have several Aberrant Tendencies comics completed, I WILL be making a physical anthology of at least 100+ pages because I think books are neat. Will probably run a kickstarter for it? Maybe? Or just open pre-orders. Kickstarters can be really overwhelming and I don’t have a huge apartment in case this entire project becomes bigger than I can handle.

Also please be aware that I recently overexerted my arm and pinched a nerve in my wrist, so I WILL be going on a little vacation for the first half of January. I gotta rest up the Art Machine or else I won’t be able to make comics at all, so January miiiight be a bit bare, though I’ll try to compensate by getting the scripts of the other comics done so that by the time the next voting period comes around there’s a more accurate idea of the comic’s contents!

This was really nice. I like how it does sound like a good melody while at the same time exhibiting some of the pattern-defying nature of the tune. 🙂

I think you miiiight have jumped to conclusions from an ask that simply asked you if you could list the Traveler’s cape and civilian names. Miiight have. Also, I’m pretty sure most of them where refered to by their civilian names in previous arcs.

It’s certainly possible.

It’s not so much that I jumped to the conclusion as that the ask opened my eyes to the possibility of it, which I hadn’t considered before. From there, I had to reevaluate things and consider how things would change if it turned out I had gotten the two mixed up. Ultimately I think I’d prefer for Cody to be Ballistic, but I’m still not sure either way (even with this ask heavily implying it’s Luke).

As for names, most of their names did show up (all the more reason for an ask about matching names to capes being kind of odd if it wasn’t trying to set me thinking of something), but I can’t recall Ballistic’s being one of them. But you know how my memory can be.

That smurf song you posted definitely says “dab dab dab” several times, despite the video being uploaded to YouTube in 2009, and the song supposedly being from 1978. So that’s suspicious as hell.

I… think that has to be the bits where it actually says “tramp, tramp, tramp på en smurf” (“stomp, stomp, stomp on a smurf”).

Either way, now we’re all forced to consider the concept of the Smurfs dabbing, so thanks for that. 😛

“Dragonberry” was Scarfgirl’s old character on City of Heroes, a MMORPG with a superhero theme that no longer exists. I know you’re not reading the chapter comments, but if you ever go back to read the early ones, you’ll see that quite a lot of the early readers were City of Heroes players who had an interest in superhero fiction. That’s why Scarfgirl’s art is signed “Dragonberry”, because it’s how people knew her back then.

Ah, interesting. Fun to hear a little about the fandom’s early history. 🙂

I’ve had many names, myself. Once upon a time I used to make a different name, if not more, for just about every site I was on. One of the names that stuck with me the most was Elementarion, which I used in the game Godville and a few other places (not every Elementarion that comes up on Google now is me, though), because I found long-time friends while using that name.

Though for some reason I wonder why 😛, nobody seemed to want to type it out every time they wanted to mention me. I’ve been called almost every short form of Elementarion there is. El was the most common (made watching Stranger Things kinda odd the first time around, even though I’d long abandoned the name), but I’ve been called Ele, Elem, Eleme, Elemen, Element…

A couple other highlights I remember were Hiatus (in a browser game I don’t remember the name of), OldHeavens (NewGrounds) and Barbute (ArmorGames).

It wasn’t until I came up with Krix Jace, later Krixwell Jace, that I started stabilizing my name.

My favorite part is the Master of Aesthetic saying “she is an idiot, and a loathsome schemer!” and YISUN is all “YEP, YOU GOT THAT ONE RIGHT 😀 😀 :D”. With Aesma standing right there.

YISUN is the type of person who has “precious trash babies” in every fandom they’re in. 😛

I feel like you all need to know, even if you don’t care about MLP:FiM, that the final episode of the show proved us all wrong.

The show’s resident Skitter is not Queen Chrysalis, the villainous, scheming ruler of a hive full of insect ponies.

Nor is it Twilight Sparkle, the mainest character and socially awkward brainiac who leads a team of five other main characters and always does her research if she can.

1. “What happened to Hansa” is addressed in the Prim story so that’s still out there if you want to know.

Ahh. That would explain why it was left unexplained in Aesma, aside from acting as a noodle incident if you haven’t read Prim.

2. As you observed, the word “demon” has appeared very rarely in the comic, outside of epic title drops & an instance where drunk Allison used it in place of “devil”. It’s used in some of the bonus texts but without a clear definition. Can you speculate further on what it might mean?

The priests seem to call Aesma a demon in the sense of a being of evil, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a definition that’s relevant to the comic’s title (and what appears to be Allison’s “name” in some sense, though the Demiurges do seem to have misinterpreted other parts of the prophecy and Zoss didn’t unambiguously use it as a name). It may be more about inner demons, Allison killing her fears, doubts and insecurities as she grows into the role of a king/queen of the cosmos. Six billion might be hyperbole, in that case, but still.

Alternatively, the prophecy and name might actually refer to Zaid, who could easily end up being the final villain of this thing even if he’s not actually Zoss’ intended successor. In that case, “six billion demons” might refer to humans, if Zaid gets really nasty with his own species. We know very little about Zaid’s base personality beyond “kinda sleazy boyfriend”, so a lot of developments are plausible on that front.

Though there are other parts of the prophecy, as well as illustrations, that do fairly clearly indicate Kill Six Billion Demons is Allison and will be flanked by White Chain and Ciocie, so it referring to Zaid is unlikely.

3. I think the author once said that there are still Aesma-worshippers active in Throne. What do you think they’re like and what would she think of them?

(Somehow the flesh sellars come to mind.)

Well, clearly they’d be Slytherins, if they understand her teachings. Aesma might treat them as ants, if she were still around, but bask in their adoration.

4. Kalpa — a Hindu / Buddhist concept meaning a really fucking long time. Besides in the story you just read, the term has also appeared in the comic at least once so far.

Good to know. I think I kind of just assumed it was Throne’s equivalent of a year, however long it might be.

5. Panopticon — a prison design envisioned by philospopher Jeremy Bentham, allowing all prisoners to be observed from a central point.

Makes sense. When I read it in Aesma’s story, the word’s construction was clear enough that I figured out what it was immediately, before I finished reading the sentence. It very clearly means a place from which to see everything.

6. Root — penis.

Yeah, I figured that one out. 😛

8. Not related to K6BD but Abaddon has also been working on a tabletop mecha RPG and here’s the very nice cover art:

Ooh, you’re right, this looks very nice. It kind of gives me a K6BD x Steven Universe x Star Wars vibe. And a little bit of RWBY with that one guy that reminds me of Tyrian. I can definitely see the resemblance between this an K6BD in terms of character design style, despite the genre shift.

I particularly like the blonde in the lower left.

In the interest of transparency, I should also mention that the patron has said he probably won’t sponsor full liveblogs of any of the other bonus texts, but has sent me a few recommendations and links to some of the ones I’ve passed (besides Prim). I might read some of those on my own time, though, especially the second Aesma story. If I do, I will of course let you know and discuss any particularly notable observations.

6 “I don’t likewhen you say things like that. To me, you’re perfect.”

Already a shortwhile after they had started working together, Holtzmann noticed that Erin hada habit of making self-depreciating comments.

She oftenfollowed them with a little laugh, as if to convince the people she said themto that she hadn’t been serious; Holtzmann knew how her real laughter soundedthough, and could easily tell that those certain little laughs were as fake asthe polite smiles Erin put on whenever they had to be nice to the mayor or hisPA.

And so, she madeit her mission to make sure Erin wouldn’t have any reason anymore to say suchthings about herself, not simply contradicting her whenever she did so, but bytrying to make her feel better about herself, more confident and more secureabout her abilities.

This got a biteasier when they officially started dating, as simply being with Holtzmann madeErin much less uptight and more relaxed than she had been in years; still shekept making these remarks about herself, downplaying her achievements or herskills, and each time she did so, Holtzmann’s heart clenched up.

Still she didn’tjust bluntly bring it up, not wanting to make Erin feel even worse aboutherself… until the first time they made love, and snuggled in bed afterwards, acontent sigh coming from the blonde as she lovingly caressed Erin’s hair, the physicistresting in her loose embrace.

“That wasamazing”, Holtzmann let her know, giving her happy, satisfied smile, “I’m soglad I got you in my life, Sweetheart.”

“Ah, I’m sureyou would have found someone even better if we hadn’t met”, Erin replied, with thatsmall fake laugh following her words again, “I’m nothing special, you know.”

“I don’t like itwhen you say things like that”, the words blurted out of Holtzmann before shecould stop herself, Erin giving her a startled look, “to me, you’re perfect.”

“Um”, Erin letout, clearly not sure what to respond, a blush colouring her cheeks; clearingher throat, feeling bad for just blurting it out like that, Holtzmann took amoment to gently kiss her, gaze and voice soft when she continued.

“I mean it”, shereassured the physicist, “you are. I’ve noticed you tend to… make thesenegative remarks about yourself, downplay what you did and can do and… it’sjust not true.”

“…thank you”,Erin gave back after a moment, an audible tremble in her voice; Holtzmann justsmiled at her, and kissed her again before she held her close, the two womenlying in comfortable silence, simply enjoying it to be so close to each other.

Erin might not believeher fully yet, Holtzmann knew, and it would take time for the physicist tochange how she viewed herself… but she was determined to help her do so, andwould give her best to make it happen.

13 “I love you, notthem.”

Erin had beensurprised at first when her parents had told her they would come to visit herat the firehouse, and then she had been nervous, having spent the days beforetheir arrival tidying everything up, making sure her workspace in particularlooked good and presentable, and even asking Holtzmann to hide the moredangerous of her projects.

The engineer didher the favour, making sure all the things left on her workbenches lookedharmless; still she made a mental note to keep Erin’s parents away from thegadgets and tools, not wanting them to cause any accidental poofs.

“They’llprobably annoy you with endless questions”, Erin warned her, “and not justabout your work. They know we’re dating so…”

“Ah, I canhandle them”, Holtzmann reassured her, with a hopefully calming smile, “noworries there, hot stuff.”

Erin smiled andnodded and kissed her, then went to check her desk once more; and as shewatched her girlfriend work and fret, Holtzmann hoped that all of this would beover soon, not liking it to see her girlfriend so nervous and worried.

Holtzmann hadbeen warned that Erin’s parents might question her mercilessly, and she hadbeen mentally prepared for that, had been determined to make a good impression onthe elderly couple.

What she hadn’tbeen prepared for was that both Gilberts just gave her a disparaging look asthey shook hands with her and then just ignored her, only asking Erin a few questionsabout her work, and not seeming all too impressed by that, either.

They barelyshowed enough interest in their work to be polite, then asked Erin to go forlunch with them – and just Erin,pointedly not including Holtzmann; the physicist gave her girlfriend anapologetic look as she left with her parents, and even though she told herselfshe shouldn’t let this bother her, Holtzmann felt dismayed at being treatedthis way.

She distractedherself with her work, keeping her hands and mind busy until Erin came back twohours later; and she was relieved that the physicist was alone, and that herparents hadn’t come back to the firehouse with her.

“Well, that wasa long lunch”, Erin sighed as she leaned against Holtzmann’s workbench, “I’msorry they treated you like this. Be glad you didn’t join us, it was ninetyminutes of Erin, what are you doing with your life and Erin, how long is thisphase with this woman going to last?”

“Charming”,Holtzmann mumbled, hurt again by this – she loved Erin with all her heart,would do anything for her, and to be just dismissed like that was neither fair,nor right, “they gonna come back here?”

“No”, Erin replied,and something in her voice madeHoltzmann look up from her voice and at her, “I told them not to. I told them Idon’t want to see them again until they’re at least capable of treating youlike a human being.”

“Erin”, Holtzmannsaid, stunned – she knew how badly Erin had been craving the approval of herparents, before the Ghostbusters, how she had lived her life the way they hadwanted her to, regardless if it made her happy or not, “that’s… holy shit.”

“I love you”,Erin replied, her voice surprisingly calm and steady, despite what she just hadrevealed, “not them. I know that’s a horrible thing to say about my parents,but… They never just loved me unconditionally, and the only condition I havefor them now is to respect me, and you, and if they can’t do that…”

She trailed offand shrugged, now looking a bit nervous again, worried about Holtzmann’sreaction; in response, the engineer put her tools down and hugged her tight,and Erin hugged her back at once, a small sigh of relief escaping her at thisdisplay of affection.

“I love you, too”,Holtzmann told her, making her smile again, “just the way you are. And I getwhat you mean, people act as if you’re obligated to love your parents but…sometimes, they don’t make that easy. Or possible.”

Erin justnodded, then pulled her close again for a gentle kiss, and just like that, allher bad feelings were gone as she realized once again that this was her true family, people who cherished her and loved herfor who she was, and as long as she had Holtzmann and her friends, everythingwould be okay.

2 “Like what yousee?”

For once, it hadbeen Holtzmann who had gotten slimed, and only because she had heroicallythrown herself in front of Erin when the ghost had started spewing the greengoo.

And so, she haddibs on the shower; she squelched her way upstairs, shedding her slimedclothing on the way, and once Erin heard the water run, she walked upstairs,too, eager to thank Holtzmann properly for her heroics.

“You need helpremoving the stuff?” she called out as she entered the bathroom, not wanting tostartle the engineer; Holtzmann let out an affirmative noise from behind theshower curtain, and Erin smiled as she quickly undressed, then pulled the curtainaside, Holtzmann’s eyes bugging out almost comically at the sight of the nakedphysicist.

“What”, Erin saidinnocently, hiding it well how much it flustered her that Holtzmann was stilllooking at her like that, after the time they had been together and how oftenshe had seen her naked already, “I need to help you wash it off.”

“Uh-huh”,Holtzmann let out, Erin giving her another smile before she stepped into the tub;she started with removing the slime from Holtzmann’s back, possibly caressing abit more than she strictly had to, and judging from how the engineer sighedevery now and then, she was clearly enjoying her girlfriend’s touch.

Feeling daring,Erin let one hand slide to Holtzmann’s front, cupping her breast, and earning asharp intake of breath; and then, Holtzmann turned and kissed her deeply, slimeand cleaning up forgotten, Erin having a moment to be thankful that there wasno slime anywhere near Holtzmann’s mouth before she focused fully on how goodit felt to have Holtzmann’s tongue caress hers.

She pulled theengineer even closer, forgetting all about the slime, and not caring when shefelt it on her skin; after a while, Holtzmann pulled back from the kiss, andgave Erin quite the unabashed once-over, the physicist raising an eyebrow atthat look.

“Like what yousee?” she asked teasingly, and Holtzmann grinned at her, noddingenthusiastically.

“You know I do”,she then said, making Erin smile again as well, “but now, you’re slimed, too. Guesswe have to help each other.”

“Oh nooo”, Erin saiddramatically, making Holtzmann laugh – before she pulled her close for anotherkiss, the act of cleaning up postponed for a few more minutes as they were focusedon much nicer activities.

(she was one of three last year, so you can't use this to id me) my point is we're close. here's my problem: everyone here - human, gentry, otherwise - knows the name the people i love most call me by. my new name has become my true name. my friends know that they know, but others? a chill goes up my spine every time teachers, less-close friends, and campus staff call me by my name. i don't think it's legible on my face, but people here have become good at seeing without showing what they've seen. this school just has that effect. i can't just get a new nickname, because as soon as i tell people to call me something different, they'll know something's up. basically, i'm stuck just letting the gentry call me by my truest name and hoping they don't figure it out. my friends and i have talked deep into the night about this and none of us knows what to do. that's why i'm here. i said i didn't come empty-handed, and i meant it; this teddy bear is the last token i have of my life in the system. his name is taco. he's brown and ratty and i don't remember who gave him to me besides the fact that, like everything, it wasn't my birth parents, but he's well-loved. i hope this will be sufficient for you to help someone who cannot even tell you their false name. you don't have to answer right now; you can find me on the quiet floor of the library pretty late into the night most nights. but if it pleases you, i don't have long to wait. and sam? i would really appreciate your help.

Help freely given, because I have a lot of small kindnesses to pay forward, and I Owe – your best bet is to change schools, my guy.  In a place where reality is less shaky, your true name is just a name, and even someone saying it with intent wouldn’t be able to compel you against your will.

If you’re hellbent on staying at Elsewhere, you’ve got two options. The first is to carry on and keep hoping no one realizes what a precious thing you’ve handed them. The second, if you think you can do so with subtlety, is to try to change your nickname anyway. I know you’re worried it would broadcast the importance of the old nickname, but it’s not actually rare for people to realize that maybe they don’t want to go by, say, Deeznuts for four years straight. It’s a nickname and it gets old. If you’re careful about it, you might be able to shift to a new name without anyone catching on.

If things go really, really badly, remember that your true name is not just a weapon to be used against you. If your loved ones know it, it can bring you home.

Whichever version of your name holds the most importance to you would be the one you should keep secret, but using anything similar (nicknames, changed pronunciation) is still flirting with disaster – your enemies are more than capable of putting together clues. I think the half-kilo of titanium round your spine would afford you some respect, however. Caution, even.

You miiiight be okay, actually! Some of these could potentially cancel out; the debts you admit through typical courtesies like ‘I’m sorry’ could likely be paid off with poems and stories you’d give out for free otherwise. Combined with the fact that after so long they’re fairly wary around bio majors, and you might make it through unharmed, albeit with a few settled debts under your belt. The biggest issue would be falling asleep in places where time is strange, and I can’t really help you there, but the librarians could direct you to the chairs where the time ration of in/out is 1:1.
