The Big Cat
It was difficult but I wrote for Miguel O Hara ! Took me weeks, and I’ll try again, but I don”t know why, it’s super hard to write about him.
Tumblr media
It was mainly to laugh and annoy him that Y/N was saying that Miguel was more like a cat than a spider.
It was also somewhat true.
Between his fangs, claws, heels, and demeanor, the leader of the Spider Society often looked like a big cat. Grumpy, territorial, asocial.
When he wasn't out in the field shutting down an anomaly, he stayed in his office, growling when someone came uninvited, and even when they were invited.
It was hard to be close to him, but many of them tried. Some managed it, a bit, like Jess and Peter. Y/N too according to them, although she wasn't always sure.
She remained hopeful, telling herself that if she really bothered him, he would have sent her back to her dimension a long time ago.
Even when she stood against him during the Miles affair, she was the only one not to be sent back to her universe. He didn't change his mind, but he listened to her, mumbling and sighing, because she didn't understand anything, but he didn't yell at her, he didn't threaten her, and she wasn't thrown into a portal.
But maybe he hadn't done it yet because he wasn't cruel. Y/N had no one in her dimension. People didn't like her, they saw her as a criminal, she had no friends, her crush (whom she hadn't even held hands once) had died falling from a roof.
The spider society was the best thing that had happened to her, and without her being able to explain why, she really wanted to be close to Miguel, the big cat.
Y/N wondered if it was irony when it was she who was turned into a cat by an anomaly. She had barely had time to teleport to HQ and now she was meowing desperately through the halls, trying to find someone who could help her.
Of course, it had to be the big cat.
It was always difficult to know what Miguel was thinking. He spoke little, and his face didn't often show emotion, except when he was angry. Very angry.
Regarding the animals, it was also difficult to know what he thought of them. There were Animal Spiders, but it wasn't the same. He treated Ham, Spider-cat and T-rex with respect, talking to them as if they were human.
Real animals were different.
"Hola." he said calmly, with his monotonous tone, approaching her. "Are you lost, little thing ?"
"Meow !" was the only answer Y/N could give him.
"Don't be afraid, amor. How did you get in here?  Someone took you ? Well, whatever. You must be thirsty. Come with me."
Y/N had already seen Miguel with Peter's baby, and some children during missions. She knew he could be sweet. But he had never been like this with her, so it was a surprise to find herself in his arms.
He carried her to his office, where he offered her some water, before putting her on his lap and stroking her head. Dreamy. Y/N couldn't help purring. Eyes closed, enjoying the feeling, she didn't see him smile. Miguel never smiled.
"Lyla." he said pressing down on his computer. "Find out whose cat this is and how it got into HQ."
     "I'm waiting."
     "... Please."
     "Right away, boss !"
As his virtual assistant disappeared to complete her task, Miguel continued to pat her head while concentrating on the screens of his many computers.
Most of them showed universes where certain anomalies had been reported, and which he watched very carefully. Others from the universes of spiders who had caused problems, like Miles, or who needed to rest, like Jess. There were images of a variant of Miguel with a little girl. And there was a screen with Y/N.
She stared at it, suddenly stopping purring, surprised to see herself here and not understanding why.
Like the big cat that he was, Miguel took note, looking down at her.
"What ? Do you want something, amor ?"
     "Meow !"
“Hmm. Oh, her ? A nuisance, don't worry."
"You mean your tu pequeño favorito, tu dulce sueño, tu..."
"Lyla !" Miguel growled, waving his hand to blur the apparition, which made her laugh even more. "Shut up."
"Okay, I won't say anything about your secret. And I couldn't find anything on the cat, the cameras had a weird reception problem, and then we can see it hanging around the halls."
"It's not normal, find the reason for this concern. And... I don't want any comment, but I thought that Y/N had to take care of an anomaly. It's been several hours, she doesn't didn't send in her report. Did she come back ?"
"I think so ? Her watch beeped in this dimension. I'm inquiring, boss ! Don't panic, I'm sure your querida isn't far."
     "Callate, idiota !"
Sometimes Peter B. annoyed everyone by saying that his daughter had magical powers and that holding her in your arms made it possible not to get upset.
Y/N could now tell that her cat version had managed to contain Miguel, who was flushed with rage, visibly ready to destroy everything around him and yell at Lyla, but just breathed very hard, gently holding her against him.
"I'm sorry, amor... It's fine." he reassured her by patting her neck. "It's just... I'm tired."
There were some things Lyla had said that had troubled Y/N, but the tall spiderman's sad look caught her full attention. She had never seen him like this.
There had been the story of the dimension he had destroyed. Moments when he stared into space. The huge Morales disaster, when some wondered if the spider society still had a reason to exist if their leader made so many mistakes.
Luckily, the majority had come to Miguel's defense, because as spiders they had all made mistakes, lots of mistakes, always thinking they were making the right decision and wanting to do good. Y/N was one of those.
Their support had seemed to please Miguel, even if he had hesitated to give up his place and go into exile. Since then, he had made efforts, he had been more careful.
Even if he continued to behave like an aggressive and grumpy feline with the younger ones who hurt themselves a little too much, and with Y/N who loved to tease him, and who also hurt herself a bit, sometimes.
"Meow." she said, rubbing her nose against Miguel's face, which brought up a sad smile.
"Thank you, mi amor. that's nice. I thought after Morales... But there are always anomalies. Always worlds to save. And always... Why can't she pay attention ? It's although she protects the little ones, like she protected Miles. She was right, I should have listened to her, but I couldn't risk destroying the entire multiverse for one man if she was wrong."
"I know, you already told me." tried to say Y/N. "Except that you were wrong, you never really said it, because you're too proud."
"Exactly. I knew you would understand. I didn't want to hurt the kid, or anyone. It was a shock when I saw his dad get up and everything was fine. So I thought I could... We could... But no, it's still too risky. And I don't think she'll want to. But she could at least take care of her own safety ! Mierda ! I've already lost... Everyone I love die. I don't want this to happen to her. I'm tired, amor. So tired."
Since he hadn't said her name, Y/N wondered if he was still talking about her, because she found it hard to believe that Miguel O'Hara, big lonely cat, was talking about love, and especially the love he felt for her.
If she teased him so often and wanted to be close to him, it wasn't because she was sociable. It was for another reason that seemed ridiculous and stupid. Until now.
Without realizing it, she had started to purr again, clinging to his neck. That seemed to help him a bit, as Miguel stopped shaking, caressing her and muttering a few words in Spanish.
It worked, until Lyla came back.
     "Uh... Boss ?"
"What ?" Miguel muttered, keeping his face in Y/N's fur.
"Uh... No one knows where Y/N is."
     "... What ?"
"Her watch beeped here, but we can't track it. No trace of her, no one saw her. The anomaly she was supposed to capture was attached, but not brought back."
     "No. No no no !"
This time the cat was forgotten, placed on the desk for Miguel to get up quickly and run around the building, not knowing that the person he was looking for had been on his lap for almost an hour. And Y/N had no way to make it clear to him, not having her powers to follow him, and Spidercat not being there to do the translation.
She wandered all the same in the corridors of the Spider society, crossing several spiders which caressed her all the head before continuing to seek her.
At the end of the day, they all gathered in the cafeteria, Miguel in the middle, mumbling, shaking, rubbing his eyes trying to stay calm.
"... No one found her ?"
"No." replied Peter B., touching his shoulder. "Gwen, Miles, Hobbie and Pav went to town. Jess and Ben looked into other dimensions. I searched the whole building with the others."
"... But her watch is there. The anomaly was captured and unconscious. If she... Where is she ? Peter, where is she ?!"
"Calm down, Miggie. Y/N is gifted, smart and strong. I'm sure she's fine."
"What if she's not fine ?!" Miguel shouted, baring his fangs. "If she's hurt, or worse ?! I shouldn't have sent her on a mission alone ! I should have..."
"Do you want to hold Mayday ? It would be nice if you held Mayday."
     "I don't want to hold your baby, estúpido, I want to find Y/N ! Where's Y/N ?!"
     "Meow."
All the spiders then looked at Y/N, who had sat by Miguel's feet and was staring at him, purring. At first they thought it was cute. Then they wondered how a cat had entered the building.
And then, Miguel the first, they understood.
     "... Y/N ?"
Normally, Miguel would have been reassured, while completely panicked by realizing that he had said a lot of things to Y/N in passing that she was a cat, and he would have gone and locked himself in his office asking Jess to find a solution, unable to face the situation.
It was a surprise for Y/N to find herself back in his arms, the big cat hugging her tenderly, caressing her neck and holding back what looked like sobs.
"Amor, I believed... I believed... Never do that again."
Throughout all the examinations and searches for a solution, he held her against his chest, growling when someone tried to take her from him.
It didn't take long for Lyla to figure out how the anomaly had transformed Y/N, and how to return her to her normal form. It was then that Miguel went to hide in his office, refusing to see anyone. Especially Y/N.
The big shy cat was sulking again in his corner.
Luckily, thanks to Hobbie, Y/N knew how to get in without being spotted. Very useful for pranking and annoying the boss. Very useful also to force him to have a discussion about his feelings.
     "Hi Mig !"
"… What do you want ? Give me your report on your last mission ?" he asked without turning around.
"Oh, that. Yes, why not ? So, I found the anomaly, I caught it, but they turned me into a cat, I ended up in the spider society where a big sulky cat took good care me, because he has a soft heart under his muscles, and he loves me very much."
Y/N smiled then, waiting for a reaction, but nothing. Miguel continued to stare at his screens, showing no sign of annoyance or anger. She then guessed the face he was making. She jumped on the platform, near him.
Contrary to what she had thought, he did not move. He didn't hide his moist eyes, his sad and broken expression. He stood there, waiting for her to laugh at him and tell him that he was stupid, that he had made another mistake, that he had no right to be happy, to have someone, because anyway as soon as he loved someone, that person was hurt.
"And I love that ridiculous big cat a lot too. Lyla has found a cure, I'm me again and hopefully the big cat will come out of his den to come and have a coffee with me at the cafeteria ?"
This time, Miguel turned a little towards her, looking lost.
"... End of the report ? Happy ? We did a great job, it really deserves a coffee."
     "Y/N..."
"For real. Great teamwork. We'll have to do this again. Well, not the part where I'm transformed, nor the part where you're scared because you thinl that I'm dead, but the long talk about feelings, the hugs, the purrs. It was mostly me, but I'm pretty sure you were purring too at some point."
     "Y/N."
"I understood what you were scared of, and I guess I was scared of the same thing, and that's why you're avoiding me, and I wasn't trying to be more than your friend, but actually..."
"If I say yes to coffee, will you stop talking so much ?"
"No. Maybe. I do talk when I'm drinking, but it's rare, and I'm a bit cold afterwards because my clothes are wet. It's difficult to talk and drink at the same time."
Miguel sighed, frowning at his eyes, as he often did, but Y/N saw that he was hiding a small smile behind his hand.
He agreed to follow her to the cafeteria, where he sat across from her to watch her drink her coffee and listen to her talk over and over. The other spiders were intrigued, because the boss never came to the cafeteria.
Peter B. took a photo, because according to him it was important to have memories of the first date.
"It's not a date." muttered Miguel.
"My heart is bleeding, Mig. Ouch. I thought we had something special."
"It's just a coffee. For our first date, we'll go to the best restaurant in Nueva York, not the tower."
     "Aaaaw, Miggie."
"I have pictures of Miguel holding cat Y/N."
Letting Peter take pictures was obviously not a problem for Miguel. But when Miles had finished his sentence, he turned to the young spider, who didn't seem to see the problem.
"What ? That was so cute ! It looked like a cat daddy with his baby cat !"
"I agree. I have pictures too." Lyla said as she appeared near the kid. "A lot."
     "... Erase them."
"Send them to me." said almost all the other spiders at the same time.
     "Morales."
     "It's sent !"
"Miguel, don't start chasing the kid again !" Peter shouted as he followed them down the halls.
Y/N let them, knowing that Miguel wouldn't hurt Miles. He was only furious that evidence of his vulnerable side existed, because like cats, he was proud and stupid. So she finished her coffee waiting for him to come back to shyly ask her when they could go on their real first date.

Across the Spidervers x Venom!femReader {Bad ending}
(Reader is Māori)

TW: character death, mental health, trust issues, betrayal, cursing, held captive, traps, mentions of killing
—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—––—–—–
You were Spider woman. Yes, you knew that. Your uncle knew that and your friends from other dimensions knew that too! Friends who you missed dearly.
The life as Spider-woman would be tiring at times, but the felling of knowing that the city where your family and many other families live are safe; Was something you needed to know an able to sleep.
But you felt so alone. Missing your friends, missing swinging through a city with them and defeat evil. Joking around and the small meal breaks. You haven't been able to connect with others that much after becoming Spider-woman, it seemed like crime happened everywhere every day.
One day, when you were going against another villain, who was actually a very new one to you.
"So uh, what are you supposed to be? --" You swung up in the air, dodging the attack.
"Some, Super . . .goo?" You watched as dark gooey liquid drip off from it's deformed body.
'Ew'
"You . . . die!" The monster shouted. The thing picked up a large bolder from the wrek and threw it twards you.
You shot your webs at the bolder and jumped up, throwing it right back at it.
"That's not a really nice thing to say man." You continue with your witty comments when trying your best to take down the monster. Then suddenly, the thing begins to glitch. This gave you a little heart attack, knowing the feeling all too well.
"I see, you're from another dimension." You mumbled as the monster's glitching was a little long.
Suddenly, the gooey thing shot itself at you. Luckily you got out the way. But the goo stuck onto you, making your foot and hand stick to the ground and wall.
"Mother--nature!" You shout in frustration.
"Spider-Woman!" You hear a familiar voice shout. You quickly turn your head to see your father, captain of the Brooklyn police force. You clear your voice before speaking in a deep voice.
"uh- Stand back! no need for assistance Captain l/n!" You shout back at your dad who had other officers behind him, ready to engage. You used all of your strength to get your foot out of the goo that had harden instantly. After breaking your foot free. You kicked at whatever the gooey monster threw at you.
Suddenly, some portal opened up. Thats when a figure quickly shot out of it. It didn't take you long to realize who it was.
"Gwen!" right when you and Gwen were away from the civilians, you couldn't help your excitement to hug the living hell out of the blond. Gwen laughed.
"It's nice to see you too." Gwen laughed out as she hugged you back. Gwen began to tell you about the Spider Society and how she wanted to recruit you. She told you the higher up wanted to meet with you about a serious situation that was to happen in your universe.
You got concerned for a moment. You cared about your city and everyone in it. So, if your wold is in trouble, then you would of course get involved.
Gwen gave you a day pass bracelet so you wouldn't glitch like crazy. Before entering the portal, you looked back, wondering what your other family members were doing at the moment. Hoping they would be safe.
The Spider society was honestly amazing. You met and had some fun with people who were like you. You felt so happy, smiling non-stop. Gwen laughed as you acted like a child in a candy store.
Then you both stopped big doors. "Miguel said he wanted to meet with you alone. Y-you alright with that?"
You smiled, a little nervous to meet the big boss of this whole thing. But you reassured her and walked in alone. Before the doors closed, your turned around and gave her a thumbs up and said, "Wish me luck."
The doors closed. It was a little dim, but you were able to see good enough. You breathed in and calmed yourself down, pulling your mask down and walking to where you see more light coming from a specific spot in the big room.
"Uh- H-hello? Mr. O'Hara?" You see a man in a dark blue and red suite. The aura around the man made you nervous, his built just added on to your little fears. You cleared your throat and straightened up.
"I'm Y/n L/n. I was told you wanted to see me . . . sir?" Miguel got closer to you with a stoic look on his face.
"We know who you are kid." Miguel spoke. You frown at the word 'we' and search the room and see a woman who was. . . pregnant. You were a little confused, and worried.
"Um. . . don't y'all get like, paternity leave or something?" You pointed out at the woman. Miguel ignored your comment.
"Where's Gwen?" His words sounded like a question, but not at the same time. "She said you wanted to see me alone. Hey, I kind of need to be back soon. No disrespect sir, but I got school and stuff. . . " You cringed at how dumb you sounded.
Miguel and the woman in the room gave each other a look.
Miguel began to explain the problem.
Apparently, ever since your time in earth 1016, your experience there had changed your mindset on a lot of things, including certain things that were a part of your 'canon' as Miguel called it.
"What . . . what's wrong with that?" You were generally confused, what part of your canon did you accidentally prevented.
Lyla then showed multiple canon events, all the same, all that had happened in different universes.
"Every Spidey loses someone, most of them fall in love and most of them lose that lover. For you, your canon involves family members."
"What?"
"Now we don't know which of your family members would die--"
"The hell, if that supposed to make me feel better!?" You were getting upset, rightfully so.
"Look kid, we know this is hard for you to take in." The woman known as Jessica spoke up. ''But you are your own anomaly, the more you stay with your family the way you are doing at the moment, the more damage you'll inflect on your world."
"Wha- . . . You can't just tell me one of my family members are going to die and tell me not to fucking interfere. My mother is pregnant! my siblings are literally toddlers, my dad- he just got his new position as captain." Your mind was going into a panic, you can't lose any of them. Your family was your whole world, you already lost someone you can't afford to lose again. You know deep inside if you lose anyone else, you'll brake.
And there is nothing you are more afraid of then braking.
Miguel sighed. "I'm sorry kid, but let's be honest. If it weren't for Miles Morals, you wouldn.t be in this situation." Miguel spoke as multiple other Spider people surrounded you. You frown and look around to see all of them.
"What . . . what's going on? . . . Where's Gwen!" Suddenly a gadget was tossed to your feet. And before you could react, a forcefield was put up around you.
And that, that is when you freaked out.
"Once this timer goes off, that is when we set you free. Just a few days kiddo."
Your eyes shifted to the timer. 2 days.
You shouted, banged on the forcefield, used as much strength as you could to try and get out.
"LET ME OUT! GWEN! GWEN HELP ME!" You shouted for your friend. You shouted for help. But alas, no aid came to you.
"Please Y/n. The more you struggle the harder it will be for us." You hear someone say, but you ignore and keep slamming your body against the transparent walls.
Then suddenly your Spidey senses tingled. You look around the room, then you noticed a familiar white and black suit. "Gwen! Gwen help me! Please help!"
Gwen walked up to you. She stared you in the eyes, your face expression dropped when you noticed the look of pain in her eyes. Gwen held herself and turned away from you. "Gwen . . .?"
"You did good Gwen." Jessica began to pat Gwen on the back. Your eyes widen in utter disbelief. "Gwen? Gwen!" You began to bang on the forcefield, tears already threatening to fall. Your face was covered by your mask, but everyone can hear your voice cracks.
Betrayal was all you felt as you continued to try and claw out of the forcefield, for a moment you were almost successful. Then Miguel was able to put on hologram like chains to chain you on the ground to prevent you from clawing at the barrier.
The timer went off. You watched the multiple zeros blinking. Your body felt limp, weak as the forcefield and chains disappeared. Miguel had opened a portal. You ignored him and Jessica as you chanted the names of each family member, slowly going through the portal.
The moment you stepped through, it was chaos. Your families' names repeating in your head praying to all the Gods you knew of to please spare your family.
Finally, you found a familiar body, laying limp under some ruble. Swinging down quickly, you used your strength to get the man free.
Taking your mask off, you lifted the upper half of your father's body.
"Papa" You whisper out. Moving away his hair that was in the way of his face. His eyes slowly opened to see you, his beautiful strong daughter.
"Y/n . . . ko Koe." His voice was small, but firm. You smiled through your tears.
"Yes, it's me." Your vision would get blurry here and there, but the tears would immediately fall the moment you blinked.
"You are in trouble. You were late for dinner." Your father reached up to cup your face. Just for him to pinch your cheek. Even when close to death, he still scolds you.
It didn't take long for him to lose consciousness. You cried and held his body close. Rocking back and forth as you prayed and prayed. Begging for any god to help you.
You didn't notice Gwen slowly approaching you. She mends down and watches as you cradled your father's body in your arms. Gwen reached her arm out and held your shoulder.
"We have to go, before the police get here--"
"Tuku- Tukua--"
"We need to go Y/n--"
"Tukua ahau!" You smacked her hand away and stood up. Hot tears running down your face.
"I whakarerea ahau e koe!" You began to shout in your native tongue. Frustrated, hurt, betrayed.
And the feeling of dishonor you had brought onto yourself was the worse feeling overpowering everything else.
"You are no friend of mine.''
Those words shattered Gwen.
"Leave. GO! Never return." Gwen stumbled back as you returned back to your father. Holding him back in your arms, half expecting him to hold you back.
Overtaken by grief and betrayal, you refused to let the Spider society to help with the anomalies, only you deal with them and send them in a portal back to HQ.
You gained a new power, discarding your tittle as 'Spider-woman', and taking on the tittle 'Venom'.
Venom was, well-- Venom was a handful at first. But Venom helped you become stronger. Helped you defend your city and your family.
Your family took a big hit by the loss of your father.
Sighing as you sat down on the clock tower. Looking over the city, wondering how Miles was doing. Hoping the boy didn't get caught up with Gwen and Peter B.
Miles was probably the only one you still saw as a friend.
'Hungry'
You groan "We already ate Venom."
'You call that food? That was nothing but a maar snack. I want something more! something fresh~"
"Okay one, ew. Two, I'm on a diet."
You hear Venom scoffed. 'Your diet is ew' Venom spoke in a mocking tone. Causing you to roll your eyes.
Out of nowhere, a portal opened up. You were fast on your feet. The portal was a little different from the others, making you stay on guard even more. That's when Multiple Spider people came out.
One specifically that came out angered you in multiple ways. You stayed in place, staying silent.
"Y/n! we need your help!" Gwen came running to you. You silenced out her words and focused on the panic and desperation on her face.
You wonder, if you could just reject her, shun her out and watch the look of despair take over her. That sounded very satisfying.
"Please, say something. Anything! I know what I did was unforgivable, but--" You stayed silent as Gwen was practically begging.
You look up to see some old friends, and new people. You stared at Peni for a moment.
You passed Gwen and walked towards the young teen who was in a new model of her robot.
". . .Nice ride."
Peni's eyes widen at the familiar words that brought back a nice memory. Peni chuckled "Thanks. . . nice suit."
The two of you shared a few seconds of silence. Peni jumped out of the robot and hugged you. You were quick to hold her tight.
You're not blind, it's clear all of you have suffered one way or another.
You set Peni down.
You turned your head to Gwen.
"I have told you to never return." You spoke, your back still faced to the blond. "I know! But Miles-" Gwen was cut off by your hand that rose up to silence her.
"I know of Miles and his situation. But I have my universe to protect. A family I need to keep alive." You walked further away from the group. Venom forming in and taking over at the last word.
"My answer will be the same answer you gave me when I begged you for help."
You will not forgive the ones who hurt you, betray you or your family. Right now, you don't care about anyone else but the ones you have now. You refuse to risk it. Refuse to gamble the lives of your siblings and mother.
And never, will you ever risk your honor, and the honor of your father.
Tumblr media
Okay, before ya'll bash me about the Māori part, I know adding on a culture is a little off for many. I just wanted to add on a Māori reader because I don't see many representations of them. So, if any of my Māori readers dislike this, I will gladly change it.

Sopapillas.
Miguel O’Hara X Reader one-shot
Summary: You and Miguel share a small moment.
A/N: I haven’t seen the movie yet, so this is based on what I could scavenge from various Marvel websites and some spoilers. This in and of itself holds no spoilers, but I’ll tag it under “Spoilers”.
Warnings: None. Maybe some really bad spanglish (I’m Mexican but my spanish is fucking AWFUL)
(If any of my spanish is cringe or bad, please please please, correct me and suggest phrases to me. I'm totally open to criticism here!)
Tumblr media
. “Miguel? Eyo, ¿dónde está, man? I got you some sopapillas! I think some sugar could do you some good.”
You wandered around the large room where most of the tech was located. Various holographic screens were up, displaying what appeared to be some kind of surveillance system. Miguel was the one working tirelessly to find a way to…well you honestly had no idea. All you knew was that you were here, in this corner of the multiverse, with others like you. Apparently you were supposed to be a spider person, but something in your timeline went wrong, and you ended up there. You had no powers, but also no motivation to return to your former life. To be fair, going back to that absolute shit show of a life was the last thing on your to-do list. Instead, you settled for being a sort of assistant for Miguel. He usually had you run small errands, maybe keep tabs on certain things, or help with technical issues. You often wondered why, since Miguel seemed more than capable of doing everything himself. But, he did seem very overworked and just downright stressed out 24/7, so perhaps he did need the extra help.
You looked around, holding the styrofoam box in your hands. You were about to call out to him again, when a screen to your left suddenly flickered off, revealing the towering man behind it, causing you to jump. “GAH!!” you exclaimed, startled by his sudden appearance.
There were slight bags under his dark eyes and he looked as if he hadn’t slept in days (which was actually the case).
“Geez dude, you keep giving me heart attacks.” you said as you handed him the small box. “Got you a little something to help with the night shift.”
His brown eyes flicked down to what you were handing him and he blinked, his nose twitching in what could only be confusion or exhaustion. After a moment he sighed and took the box. “Thanks.” he mumbled before opening the box, grabbing a sopapilla and biting it. You caught a glimpse of his fangs, which made you shiver. ‘Dioses, those things look freaky.’ you thought.
“Did you double check that timeline I told you to investigate?” Miguel cocked an eyebrow at you, his eyes regarding inquisitively. You nodded. “Sí,todo bien. I triple checked too.”
You waited for a snarky remark about something or other, or for him to suddenly get annoyed by something, but nothing happened. Instead, he just stared at the screen to your right. You turned and saw…another version of yourself. You, the you in the video, were at a party it seemed. You were dancing and laughing, looking happier than you’ve ever felt.
“When is that?” you asked, pointing to the holographic display, the orange glow of the screen reflecting off the gold wrist cuff you wore.
“It’s apparently you in earth-3499, pre-serum you.” he said before taking another bite of his snack.
“Pre-serum? I don’t get bitten?”
“Nope,” he wiped some sugar granules off his bottom lip with his thumb, and licked the rest off. He put the box down on the consol beside him and brushed his hands off. “You, in this canon universe, were injected with this serum that combined the original super-soldier serum paired with an experimental serum that had both spider DNA and some other experimental tech.”
I cringed. “Oh no, not the nano robot thingies from earth-7569.”
“Nah, it’s something else.” He turned the screen off and leaned against the consol. He nodded to you, beckoning for you to join him up on the consol platform. You hurried up the steps and joined him. Beside him, you could clearly notice the size difference, realizing how tall he was. You glanced at him and leaned against the black console as well.
“¿Qué pasa, hombre? No eres tú mismo. Dime, ¿qué te molesta?”
Unlike most of the spider people around, he seemed more relaxed around you. He shared things with you, usually about his family. You couldn’t fathom why, but you consider yourself lucky to at least be in this man’s good graces.
He looked at you, curiously, brows furrowed as if he was trying to solve a puzzle.
“¿Por qué no quieres volver? Tenías una vida, una familia, cosas que la mayoría de nosotros luchamos por recuperar…”
You started to fidget with the sleeve of your jacket. “No sé... Supongo que mi vida canónica no fue tan... genial como la mayoría supondría.”
Miguel placed a hand on your shoulder, in a consoling manner. You continued, “No significa que no los ayudaré a todos, simplemente no me siento obligado a volver a mi antigua vida.”
He nodded. He was about to say something else when another screen popped up with a new developing timeline. He swiveled his head, and watched as the events unfolded. He groaned in annoyance. “Oh great, what now, another canon fuck up?”
As you both watched the timeline thingy, you unflinchingly watched as the spider-person on the screen got hit by a train.
“Canon?”
“Yep.”
“Anything I can do?”
He pointed to the box you had given. “You get yourself something to eat. I don’t want you hangry tonight.”
You scoffed playfully. “You’re one to talk.”
He shot you a miffed glare and threw the box at you, which you caught with ease. You chuckled, both out of unease and nervousness. “¡Que era una broma! ¡Solo una broma!”
“Uh huh, yeah, sure.” he said, sounding unimpressed.
You chuckled to yourself as you left the room. Had you turned around, you would’ve seen him shake his head and allow a small smile to grace his lips. “You’re a pain in the ass.” he mumbled.

Heyyyyy so I’m ab to get surgery in like a month meaning I’ll be in a wheelchair for a few weeks, I was wondering can you write something ab the different Cobra Kai characters reacting to a friend/partner in a wheelchair?
Hi! Sorry for taking so long to respond! I can totally do this! And I hope your surgery went well!
Cobra Kai with a friend/partner in a wheelchair:
Tumblr media
Characters: Miguel Diaz, Hawk/Eli Moskowitz, Demetri Alexopoulos, Sam LaRusso, Tory Nichols, Robby Keene, Johnny Lawrence, Daniel LaRusso, Amanda LaRusso, Anthony LaRusso, Kenny Payne
Miguel Diaz:
Tumblr media
Miguel himself was in a wheelchair for a while, so he'd completely understand how difficult and frustrating it would be, especially if there's nothing that can get his friend or S/O to be full mobile.
He'd do his best to help them out with certain things that they can struggle with, like grabbing certain items from high up areas.
He's extremely kind and helpful, as he wants his friend or S/O to be as happy as possible but he doesn't baby them because he knows it can feel belittling rather than helpful.
Hawk/ Eli Moskowitz:
Tumblr media
As Eli, he's similar to Miguel, helpful and kind but not belittling.
As Hawk, he'd probably tease/ joke around with his friend or S/O about their disability until he notices how uncomfortable or upset it makes them.
He isn't unnecessarily cruel to his friend or S/O, he's rather sweet and would ask if they want his protection or his help.
He doesn't he his friend or S/O as weak but just someone who needs an extra hand sometimes.
Demetri Alexopoulos:
Tumblr media
This dork is super helpful and cautious when it comes to his friend or S/O.
It can feel like he's babying them sometimes but it's from a good place in his heart and he'll back down a bit if he's told to.
He'll literally research everything about his friend or S/O's condition (if it's a medical condition) and do his best to help them out.
Sam LaRusso:
Tumblr media
She'd treat her friend or S/O like everyone else but help them when they ask.
She doesn't want to be that overbearing annoying person, so she's rather chill.
Tory Nichols:
Tumblr media
She's struggled a lot in her life, so she'd be understanding of her friend's or S/O's struggles but wouldn't underestimate them or baby them.
She allows them to be an independent person but will assist them if needed.
Robby Keene:
Tumblr media
He definitely babies them in a caring way until he's told to back off by his friend or S/O, as they can do things on their own.
Probably tries to teach them some skating boarding tricks to try on their wheelchairs but only if his friend or S/O want to.
Johnny Lawrence:
Tumblr media
Johnny helped Miguel out of his wheelchair, so he would assume that for his friend or S/O that it was the same situation, but if it's something permanent, Johnny will have a difficult time understanding that.
But he'll try his best to not joke around about their disability.
Daniel LaRusso:
Tumblr media
Daniel wants to try his best to help but sometimes he can go overboard when trying to help.
He doesn't mean to belittle his friend, he just wants to help.
Amanda LaRusso:
Tumblr media
Would get super upset when things aren't wheelchair accessible for her friend.
Helps with the little things that her friend needs but would still love hanging out with them, even if she has to help her friend with things that are too high up or other small problems.
Anthony LaRusso:
Tumblr media
Completely and totally ignores his friend in public because he's afraid of being deemed 'uncool' by his other friends but after the whole Kenny incident, Anthony is a lot nicer to his friend and will apologize for his past behaviours.
Kenny Payne:
Tumblr media
Does his best to protect his friend Ince he starts karate and even though he's a Cobra Kai asshole, he's likely still kind to his friend if they were friends before he started at Cobra Kai.

The Reasons Social Media Breaks Can Help Our Mental Health
I haven’t written for a while and I don’t have one solid reason. I have several.
Embrace your creativity
Working more than usual, for which I’m grateful.
Parenting — As a single mom of two teens, that’s a job in and of itself. My kids are good yet ya know, they’re KIDS.
Owning my own business and all that comes with that — fabulous clients who depend on me to be fabulous means 18-hour days just to run meet the demands, and that’s with an assistant! Not to mention the administrative crap, taxes, and all that.
Personal relationship — private. That’s all I’m gonna say about that.
Writing — Broken People is in the hands of my amazing editor and loyal friend. She lost her beloved mother so she understandably took time off. I know I want/need to add more to the book, yet I’m patiently waiting to get my structural edit back to find out what to write to fill those holes.
Focus  — more on my business writing, chats, and clients. I’m pulling together my third biz book and finding joy in helping writers navigate book marketing, branding, and social media.
The main reason I’ve not been blogging here? I’ve felt this online fatigue. I’m just…tired. Tired of the ranting and raving, of people’s entitlement over what I choose to post. Over what others post. Of the attacks. We’ve become a nation of attackers and attackees.
Will pain soaked in rage one day become empathy? Or something far darker…
What Happened to the Art of Conversation on Social Media?
The camaraderie which drew me to Twitter, Facebook, other channels, and even blogging is now full of blowhards teeming with rage and vitriol about well, everything. From books to politics to #MeToo to even cats (always a safe choice), sharing our lived truths has now become filled with denials, gaslighting, and people thrusting their absolute right to judge with aggressive opinions on what others have lived and experienced — and I’m just super fucking over it.
As I wrote in my post on protecting ourselves from social media trolls, I employ those same protections — yet those steadfast on spreading toxicity still slip through. As an advocate, vocal survivor and compassionate supporter of other survivors, I realize that puts a target on me because I’m willing to ruffle feathers. I’m here to have those difficult conversations.
Yet, it can be exhausting.
Twitter: I took a few days off Twitter this week. A few days off Facebook the week before. Why? Well, with regard to my tweets about what happens to survivors (regarding the brain and neuroscience), people decided to throw back as me enabling Harvey Weinstein (as if) and the latest situation with Asia Argento (I’ve made no comment on that). So to use my tweets as somehow part of those conversations made no sense.
Projection. People making assumptions about me without looking at my bio, what my tweets were in reference to, etc. One person became upset with how someone else used my tweet. I mean. This is not my problem.
Facebook: I shared a quote with the word ‘motherfucker’ in it, and someone decided I’m supporting rape culture because of that, and she decided to call me out on her page as a rape apologist. The quote itself is empowering.
I make the choice whether to engage. In some instances, I did respond with compassion and empathy and had good conversations with a few people about the long-term effects of sexual abuse on the brain — something more people need to learn and understand.
People are hurt and angry. Many are survivors themselves. I’m feeling the feels, too. I’ve lived with this rollercoaster for four decades. It’s a long, hard road to healing.
I’m a huge believer in The Four Agreements and this one: don’t take anything personally is more important than ever right now. People say what they say based on their own point of view and belief system.
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
My point: this harsh criticism directed at me or ANY survivor and/or advocate is so entirely lacking in compassion, I’m having a hard time getting my head — and heart — around it. Yet, it’s NOT really directed at me. People are projecting their reality onto us. Being vulnerable in this situation is simply not a choice. And usually, I’m Teflon. Lately, I’m not.
So, I made the decision to check out of social media for a few days for self-care.
Is Social Media Necessary?
We make our own experiences on social media. I’ve always believed that and still do. It’s helpful for building communities (e.g., the #SexAbuseChat I founded back in 2013 has become a wonderful, supportive community for survivors and I look so forward to these conversations each week – Tuesdays, 6pm pst/9pm est). Chats are such a terrific way to meet others with common interests and learn from one another.
But…is it necessary? Naw. We can all live our lives just fine without it. As writers and business owners, it is extremely important for branding, networking, and connection. It’s super helpful for connecting with readers. Is it the only way? Naw. There are lots of ways writers can still connect in other non-social media ways: advertising, conferences, newsletters, book clubs, writing articles, podcasts, etc.
For visibility sake, I strongly recommend it. For your mental health sake? If it’s too much, take a break or hire someone to handle it all for you. An aside: I have one client who simply cannot focus on writing if she checks into social media, so she only handles Instagram (because she’s a photographer and she loves the photog community there). She has never once logged into her Twitter, Facebook, G+, LinkedIn, or Pinterest, and says she never will (and she’s got many, many bestsellers). She simply finds it too overwhelming and stressful.
Social Media/Mental Health Decisions
Here’s what we need to ask ourselves:
What is your goal in having social media accounts?
If you go without social media, do you feel better or worse?
Is being on social media hurting you? If so, how?
Is social media making you anxious and depressed or in some way, affecting your mental health?
Is social media stopping you from writing your book?
I asked myself all these questions and decided to take a break from my personal accounts. Even a day or two made a difference. I didn’t announce it. I just did it. And the world didn’t end. In fact, I felt like a weight had been lifted.
I can’t afford to shut it all off entirely since clients pay me good money to create and manage their content and channels for them. Besides author branding and book marketing (and writing my own books), social media IS my business. I can’t afford to not be on it. I can afford to give my brain and mental health a break from the personal attacks, though.
Making Positive Mental Health Changes
Many people become addicted to social media; the studies are well-known. If you fall into this category, I suggest consciously weaning yourself, and slowly adding back in real-life interactions (interestingly, suggesting this on Twitter created personal attacks). Make your mental health a priority over social media. Crazy suggestion, I know.
Imagine that — suggesting something so crazy
Tumblr media
as talking to people face-to-face. What am I thinking! (And I get the whole introvert thing. I’m an introvert. That’s completely different than a recluse who never leaves their home.)
Embrace your creativity. What can you be doing besides chatting on Facebook or arguing with people on social media? Get creative! Write, paint, draw, think, whatever. Just do something. Change that negative energy into positive energy.
My own strategy: unfollowing and whittling down my own followers on my personal accounts, as well as blocking and muting a ton of people, as is my right. These changes feel good. Taking action feels good.
Social media is what we make it, and I am owning it, as opposed to it owning me.
Do you need help right now? Contact RAINN.org (all genders) or 1in6.org (for men).
Read more about my situation in my award-winning book, Broken Pieces.
I go into more detail about living with PTSD and realizing the effects of how being a survivor affected my life in Broken Places, available now on Amazon.

UAAP 82 BASKETBALL PRE-SEASON POWER RANKINGS: AN ATENEO-UP REMATCH?
by Pocholo D. Hermoso / 12 September 2019
Tumblr media
With the UAAP season now with us, our collective excitement – and maybe stress? – is greatly aggravated.  But along with these sentiments come expectations for the teams we’re rooting for.  Which teams will make the postseason?  Which teams won’t?  What award will this player win?  And the biggest question of them all, who will win all the marbles?  With seniors graduating, fresh blood entering the league, and summer league stints, here’s how I think all eight UAAP teams are going to fare.
1.      UE Red Warriors
After losing super-superstar Alvin Pasaol, the University of the East is undoubtedly in full rebuild mode.  In fact, a day or so before the season opened, coach Joe Silva stepped down as team mentor, and was replaced by Philippine Basketball Association Developmental League coach Lawrence Chongson of the Tanduay Rhum Masters, who led the Red Warriors to the finals in 2009.  This team is definitely not expected to win games this season; its main goal is to expose its players to the rigors of a UAAP season and develop them for the future.  Being a rebuilding team, the Red Warriors have done a tremendous step one of the rebuilding process: recruiting a cache of young talent.  After the team’s final roster cut, 12 out of the 16 players are either rookies or sophomores.  If taught and nurtured right, the Red Warriors are poised to become one of the best teams in the league in 2-3 years’ time.  They may not be contenders now, but they absolutely will not give up on games — they will try to score an upset in all 14 games. As the UE faithful proudly roar, “Go Fight!  UE! Iwakadima!” expect team veterans Philip Manalang and Nick Abanto, along with a bevy of rookies, to keep their alma mater proud – watch out for potential backcourt star Rey Suerte among these.
2.      NU Bulldogs
With a failed season 81 for the National University Bulldogs, expectations have lowered for them this season.  After winning only four games last season, a playoff berth is still a dream for this team.  In a team filled with role players, NU would be best served running the offense exclusively through the younger Ildefonso, Dave.  The sophomore averaged a team-high in points per game with 15.2 to go along with 5.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists.  Dave Ildefonso is expected to take a leap towards being a superstar in this league, together with a developing supporting cast of Senegalese Issa Gaye, streaky scorer John Lloyd Clemente, elder brother and skipper Shaun Ildefonso, and the only two blue-chip recruits of the Bulldogs, Miguel Oczon and Robert Minerv, both from NU Bullpups.  NU has become popular in its recruitment and development of players, particularly from its juniors squad.  NU must emphasize developing star players from the young core, along with continued recruitment from its uber-talented Bullpups squad.
3.      FEU Tamaraws
After making the playoffs in dramatic fashion, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws lost the man that made it all happen.  While FEU’s offense doesn’t revolve around a star, losing your best scorer will always hurt the team.  That star, Arvin Tolentino, is now graduated, so FEU’s focus should shift towards grooming their next best scorer.  The Tamaraws are also generally young so their search for a new star may take long, but once they do get to do it, FEU should be back in the postseason in no time.  With the team now built around veteran combo guard Wendell Comboy, expect a faster-paced Tamaraw squad on both ends of the floor.  Together with him in the backcourt is point guard LJ Gonzalez, who is a shifty ballhandler and can score if he needs to.  Other vets like forwards Kenneth Tuffin and Barkley Eboña should help beef up the Tamaraw frontline and ably back up rookie center Patrick Tchuente of Cameroon in the post.  For sure, celebrated Blue Eagle and now-FEU mentor Olsen Racela and his assistants – former PBA legends Johnny Abarrientos (who also starred for the Tamaraws in college) and Jojo Lastimosa (himself a former Blue Eagle), as well as retired PBA slotman Gilbert Lao – will have their hands full pushing their wards to vie for a playoff spot.
4.      DLSU Green Archers
If you are a diehard De La Salle University alumni or fan under the impression that your Green Archers will win the championship, let alone make the playoffs, then this is a season to forget.  The three imports that the Green Archers recruited last year were one-and-done this season, and one wonders how this will help in securing their team’s long-term prospects.  In addition to having no reliable recruits yet, the team lost former team captain Kib Montalbo and Santi Santilian. With two key cogs gone, La Salle is due for an elevated performance from sharpshooter Aljun Melecio and Mythical Five selection Justine Baltazar.  La Salle isn’t picked to make the playoffs this year, but with the team’s rich history and championship DNA, it may be too early to count the Archers out.  Let’s see what type of noise they can make.
5.      UST Growling Tigers
The University of Sto. Tomas is a sexy pick to make its postseason return this year.  As CJ Cansino resumes rehabilitation of his torn ACL (he is expected to play in the season opener against UE), the team’s roster represents a predominantly young team, with majority being rookies.  While many of these Growling Tigers may be rookies, their potential is off the charts and they have the mentality and talent to make it to the playoffs.  These new and fresh faces include Beninese big man Soulémane Chabi Yo, former La Salle swingman Brent Paraiso, the long and athletic small forward from Pangasinan, Rhenz Abando, and Mark Nonoy, a UAAP “seniors-ready rookie” from the juniors program of UST.  Spearheaded by this army of newcomers, the Growling Tigers are ready to make some noise this season 82 under highly-regarded coach Aldin Ayo.
6.      Adamson Soaring Falcons
After having fallen short season after season after season, the Adamson University Soaring Falcons’ window of opportunity is closing; this year may be their last chance to win a UAAP championship.  Definitely, they will have to rely on sweet shooter Jerrick Ahanmisi to deliver the goods for them, as for the first time in his collegiate career, he is the alpha dog of this team.  Bolstered by a more-than-solid supporting cast, the Soaring Falcons are once again a contending team this year.  This season, they aren’t generally picked to end up with the twice-to-beat advantage they had last season.  This puts them in familiar position.  From Seasons 79-80, the San Marcelino-based squad was challenged with having to beat the then-Ben Mbala-led Green Archers.  Despite losing to those Archers in both seasons, an upset victory in a playoff series with any team should heal the wounds of all the Falcons’ past playoff shortcomings.
7.      UP Fighting Maroons
To be the champions, you gotta beat the champions.  The Fighting Maroons of the University of the Philippines are primed to win it all this season 82.  After coming out of nowhere to reach the finals last year, everyone now knows what to expect from this team.  This is because despite losing star skipper and leader of the “Atin ‘to” movement, Paul Desiderio, the Maroons have reinforced their squad with former La Salle star Ricci Rivero and the ever-popular Kobe Paras.  After years of winless seasons and playoff absences, this is the deepest team the Fighting Maroons have ever had since their last championship team back in ’86, when Kobe’s dad, Benjie Paras, Ronnie Magsanoc and Eric Altamirano starred for the Maroons.  With the two new stars combining with the uber-talented Gomez de Liaño brothers and floor general Jun Manzo, Bo Perasol’s army is in the running for becoming eventual UAAP champions.  The only team in their way...
8.      Ateneo Blue Eagles
Fresh from a back-to-back championship victory last season, the Ateneo Blue Eagles have the proverbial target on their backs.  In a general interview by ABS-CBN, Ateneo is the consensus team to beat.  Despite losing two games in the regular season last year, the Blue Eagles elevated their game onto extraordinary levels that they looked practically unbeatable. However, season 82 will be completely different from last season.  Many teams have bolstered their rosters.  Moreover, they are playing this season without Raffy Verano, Jolo Mendoza and the graduated Anton Asistio.  Most importantly, their biggest threat, the UP Fighting Maroons, may even be more star-studded than themselves — this season would definitely be no walk in the park for the Blue Eagles.  But despite being a team full of star power as well, coach Tab Baldwin’s men do not rely on a superstar (even someone of Thirdy Ravena’s caliber); they have a system, a system so successful it has led them to three finals appearances, along with two chips.  But considering all circumstances surrounding the team, Ateneo should get ready to be able to defend its crown and continue its dynasty.

MLS: Playing in Atlanta United’s ‘mind-blowing’ $1.5 billion new home
(CNN)Atlanta United’s Trinidadian striker replies almost instantly. “Absolutely mind-blowing,” he says with a smile.
Kenwyne Jones is describing what it feels like to be a player in his club’s brand new, state-of-the-art stadium.
Follow @cnnsport
The 33-year-old is what a seasoned football fan would call a journeyman striker. Since 2004, the Trinidad & Tobago international has mainly played in England, most notably with Sunderland, Stoke City, and Southampton.
He has also represented his country on the biggest stage of them all: The World Cup. So it’s safe to say that Jones has been there, and done that.
But it speaks volumes for the rapid rise of MLS new boys Atlanta, that when he tries to sum up the experience as a player in their $1.5 billion Mercedes Benz Stadium, in a team the talk of the football world, that he’s been blown away by the experience.
Kenwyne Jones on “mind-blowing” Atlanta United
Success story
One of two new additions to Major League Soccer this season, along with Minnesota United (who have not had nearly the same impact), Atlanta have taken to MLS as if they were 20-year veterans rather than scrappy upstarts.
On the field, with the regular season just finished, the Five Stripes ended up in fourth place, meaning they’ve secured a home game in the first round of the playoffs on Thursday in their attempt to win the MLS Cup in their debut season, a feat which has only been achieved once by an expansion side, Chicago Fire, in 1998.
Boasting the fourth-best goal difference in a single season in MLS history, Atlanta is a force to be reckoned with on and off the field.

READ: Meet football’s first chief tattoo officer
Managed by Argentine Tata Martino, who had a certain Lionel Messi in his ranks for both club — Barcelona — and country, his charges have blended South American swagger up front with a steeliness at the back.
Josef Martinez of Venezuela and Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron have lit up the league with goals and assists, while US veterans Brad Guzan and Michael Parkhurst have kept an American identity flowing through the side.
Is this sport’s first chief tattoo officer?
The hiring of Martino was arguably the most significant appointment made by the club and instantly turned them from a new franchise trying to find their feet into serious contenders.
It was a mightily impressive statement of intent from the club’s owner, Arthur Blank, who craves success for both his NFL team, the Falcons, as well as being literally United behind his soccer franchise.
“It’s been a great team effort,” says Darren Eales, Atlanta United President, who was brought over from English Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur, where he was Director of Football Administration.
“It starts with Arthur Blank our owner, right at the very top who had a commitment to soccer in building this stadium, a $1.5 billion-dollar stadium — but built just as much for soccer as it is for American football,” continues Eales.
“And then the city of Atlanta has just got behind the team in the most incredible way. This year we’ve already had a crowd of over 70,000 against Orlando.
“We’re averaging around, or are on track for, about 48,000, that would put us about 22nd in Europe ahead of teams like Paris Saint-Germain. So it’s just amazing to see this happen in the city of Atlanta.”
Tim Howard talks about his former teammates
Record breakers
This past Sunday, the team broke their own record by eclipsing the Orlando attendance with a crowd of 71,874, who witnessed a thoroughly entertaining 2-2 draw against league leaders Toronto, which would have graced most of Europe’s top leagues.
LA Galaxy searches for star talent
Among all attendances in global football that weekend, Atlanta’s crowd was only eclipsed by two teams: Tottenham and Barcelona.
The season ticket holders have been beyond supportive — literally — with nearly 22,000 season seats sold in advance, resulting in the team becoming the sixth-best attended MLS team in history before a ball was even kicked (in total, Atlanta sold the most tickets in a season in MLS history with 819,404).
Since taking to the field in March 2017 — playing at their temporary ground of nearby Bobby Dodd Stadium for the opening five months, while the finishing touches were put on their swanky new digs — the club have now amassed more than 35,000 season ticket holders.

And by playing with such swagger, Eales is equally confident in stating that, “on any given day … [Atlanta United] could give some of the teams in the Championship and lower Premier League a run for their money.”

World Cup failure
The Toronto match marked the first time the team had played a home game since the US men’s national team surprisingly missed out on a first World Cup since 1986.
Yet the feeling persists that Atlanta, as with much of MLS — a league now in its third decade with 22 sides, set to announce another two new teams by year’s end — don’t need the USMNT as much as they arguably once did.
David Villa: Pep made me a better player
Not only does the attractive brand of domestic football keep the fans returning, but in many regions of the country, including Atlanta, so much of the crowd are from other countries, where soccer is the main sport.
This means that the linking of US club to successful national results is a moot point (whether that’s good for MLS and/or the USMNT is a topic for another time).
Yet it did not go unnoticed that Toronto’s highest profile American players, the captain Michael Bradley and striker Jozy Altidore, were booed throughout.
“It’s not going away anytime soon,” says Altidore in the dressing room after the match — while Atlanta’s US goalkeeper Guzan received louder than usual cheers.
While Eales reiterates that the US not going to Russia “was a real missed opportunity … this chance every four years to be able to bring that fence sitting fan into the fold is a missed opportunity,” he’s far more bullish than hesitant about the future.
“I think there is a danger in this call for radical change,” he clarifies, referring to the clamor for US soccer to undertake a root and branch review.
“Things have happened over the last 10 years that are bearing fruit now and you can’t expect it to happen instantly. So yes, I think there are some changes that can be made.
“But I do think there is a danger of saying ‘panic stations — let’s change everything.‘”
$2 hotdogs and craft beers
Atlanta are most certainly looking for continuity rather than change.
Their stadium is a wonder to behold, befitting of already being awarded the MLS All-Star Game for 2018, as well as the 2019 Super Bowl, and the eminently sensible pricing policy for food and drink — $2 hotdogs! — is here to stay.
MLS commissioner talks expansion
The venue is simply breathtaking, resembling the sort of stadium you would design from scratch with your friends, if you could incorporate everyone’s desires.
Craft beers jostle for space among the 1,264 beer taps in total. How about a window looking out on a downtown view of the city? Absolutely.
And what are the chances of having the world’s largest video board, which if stretched out, would be longer than the Eiffel Tower? Consider it done.
The enormity of the accomplishment hasn’t been lost on MLS Commissioner Don Garber, who admitted to CNN that success of this size wasn’t on his radar.
“Frankly we didn’t see what Atlanta would be as a great MLS city the way that Arthur Blank did,” says Garber.
“When you connect all those dots it gave us something at Major League Soccer that we never really thought we’d be able to see, which is a big important market deep in the south of the United States that loves Major League Soccer in ways that are unprecedented.”
MLS: Bedoya talks politics and soccer
To think that this is still a club in its infancy is nothing short of staggering.
In the words of Kenwyne Jones, “It’s been amazing, we never thought that the fans here in Atlanta would have received the team like this and we’ve been overwhelmed from the very beginning.”
Atlanta isn’t exactly known as a city that lifts trophies. They can boast but one World Series title in baseball by the Atlanta Braves in 1995.
As recently as this year, the Falcons infamously blew a 28-3 lead to lose the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots.
But if the other football team — who have become a paean to the beautiful game, backed by a passionate fanbase that worship them in this cathedral of sport — wins the biggest prize in MLS in its debut season, there would only be one way to adequately describe the achievement.
Absolutely mind-blowing.

Armchair Analyst: Your complete guide to the 9-game Week 3 slate
March 16, 201811:51AM EDT
And now for Week 2, the final weekend of winter. Let’s take a list at the whole thing:
SATURDAY SLATE
D.C. United vs. Houston (1:30 pm ET; TV & streaming info): D.C. have two games between now and mid-July. This is one of them, and it’ll be played before 5,500 fans a few miles north of Washington at the Maryland SoccerPlex. So yeah, expect it to have kind of a weird feeling and a super-intimate look.
And expect – or hope, maybe? – D.C. to nail their defensive rotations better than they did in Week 2’s 3-1 loss at Atlanta United, in which they got cut up by allowing the Five Stripes to get out in transition. Much of the damage was self-inflicted from a D.C. point of view:
Armchair Analyst: Nobody loves running lanes the way Atlanta United loves running lanes. DC played themselves. pic.twitter.com/PkHhrnoi5d
— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) March 11, 2018
I’m not sure if it’s a case of United going out there in the wrong formation (they’ve been using a 4-1-4-1, which seems to have put too much pressure on new d-mid Junior Moreno) or the players not having clear enough roles. The play above suggests it’s a little of both.
Whatever happens, they can’t get caught doing the same stuff against Houston, which are one of the few teams in this league who can run like Atlanta. Give Alberth Elis and Mauro Manotas lanes and they’ll scorch you like Tito Villalba and Josef Martinez did. Give Eric Alexander and Tomas Martinez time to pick their passes, and they’ll play Elis and the rest through.
I have decided, in spite of last weekend’s loss to Vancouver, that I think Houston are a Good Team™ that will mostly do good things.
Minnesota United vs. Chicago (2 pm ET; TV & streaming info): In my Week 2 wrap I wrote in some depth about Chicago’s game this past weekend, a 4-3 home loss to Sporting KC. The main emphasis was on how SKC’s previously invincible defense looked so vulnerable which means just flip it and you have a happy tale about the Fire generating a ton of chances, right? They switched to a sort of 4-4-2 in the second half and honest to god ripped Sporting apart more than any team since Cruz Azul three years ago.
It was a hell of an attacking performance. And it was coupled with a nightmare defensive showing, one in which they made the previously punchless Sporting attack look like world-beaters.
Here’s Chicago’s puzzle to solve: Even without a pure playmaker, they can generate a ton of possession and clearly can generate a ton of attack. The way they do this is by pushing both fullbacks – Matt Polster on the right, Brandon Vincent on the left – all the way into the attacking third. When it works, you get this:
But the gamble is that you can push the fullbacks up like that and not be wildly vulnerable on the flanks defensively, or can at least scramble well enough to put a pin in it.
That didn’t happen. After taking that 3-2 lead Chicago were repeatedly exposed on the flanks, and any time their central defenders were pulled out of the middle to try to stop the ball at speed, they got roasted.
Know who loves to attack down the flanks? That’d be Minnesota United, who’ve gone full Randolph and Mortimer Duke in terms of cornering the market on wingers, and who ripped up Orlando City’s fullbacks last weekend. Ethan Finlay got both goals and Miguel Ibarra was, for the second straight week, a game-changer off the bench. Even without the injuredKevin Molino they have the pieces and the approach to make it a long day in the 612 for Chicago.
Philadelphia vs. Columbus (2 pm ET; TV & streaming info): I didn’t write a ton about Philly after Week 1’s 2-0 win over the Revs for a couple of obvious reasons. First it was a home game against what I suspect will be one of the Eastern Conference’s basement-dwellers, and second is that the whole tenor of the game was irretrievably altered by the red card(s) C.J. Sapong was able to induce out of the New England backline.
We know Sapong, who had a goal and an assist and a red card drawn, and could’ve had two more of each, can do that. Sapong’s performance was in line with what he provided in 2017 and the Union, as they sometimes did last year, looked like a functional team capable of running the game through midfield while using their target forward as a fulcrum.
The question is obviously “Was that real?” Columbus are a more dynamic and organized team than the Revs and are one of four in the league to open the season with six points from two games. They do it the same way they’ve done it for the last four seasons: By controlling the game in midfield, switching play with long diagonals, and generating tap-ins for their center forward.
I’ll almost certainly have more to say about this one in Sunday’s column.
Montreal vs. Toronto FC (3 pm ET; CTV, TVAS, TSN4 in Canada — full TV & streaming info): We all know what Toronto’s about, right? The only real note here are that they went away from the 4-4-2 diamond and into the 3-5-2 for their legendary two-leg series against Tigres, and looked much better off for it. Could probably make another note that Jozy Altidore looked like he was running in mud for that second leg, and I wonder if it’d be wise to give him some rest in this one.
The Impact are a little bit more of a mystery for obvious reasons. There’s been a good deal of squad turnover, and while they’ve stayed with one formation (the 4-3-3), head coach Remi Garde has fiddled a bit with where he’s been drawing the line of confrontation. It seems like they’ve wanted to play deeper at the start and then slowly move up the field as they round into the game, but part of that might be due to game states – i.e., you’re not going to sit deep and just wait for things to unfold if you’re trying to claw back from a two-goal deficit.
And yeah, the Impact have had two-goal deficits in each of their first two games. The fact that they’ve put some real fear into both the ‘Caps and Crew SC despite that speaks well of their attack. Of course, they’ve generated that attack in part by taking insane risks with their fullbacks, especially right back Michael Petrasso.
Here is a map of Montreal’s aggregate positions for the match 3-2 loss at Columbus. Petrasso is No. 24, while wingers Jeisson Vargas (16) and Raheem Edwards (14) are just in front of him (click the “Average Position” tab):
That is one hell of an aggressive stance, even for a modern fullback. In large part it worked, as they got a pair of goals. In large part it didn’t, as Columbus snapped out of their coma in stoppage, went right at Montreal’s right side, and drew a penalty.
TFC aren’t dumb. They’ll exploit the hell out of that space if Montreal present it to them.
NYCFC vs. Orlando City (3:30 pm ET; Univision & Twitter — full TV & streaming info): NYCFC will play exactly how NYCFC have played from Day 1 under Patrick Vieira: A 4-3-3 that presses high, strings a ton of passes together, and generates great looks for the league’s best center forward. The Galaxy took them out of their rhythm a little bit in the second half of last weekend’s 2-1 NYCFC win, but that felt more like the hosts taking their foot off the gas a little bit than any sort of systemic issue.
There are systemic issues for the Purple Lions. The big one is that the defense still isn’t fixed and the attack can’t possess the ball enough to mitigate that flaw over the course of 90 minutes. The other big one is that they’re not generating enough in attack, as their expected goals per game of 1.3 is in the bottom quarter of the league.
Getting Sacha Kljestan into the lineup for the first time should help – he’s had some big performances in Yankee Stadium before, after all. But he’s only a partial solution to just half of what’s ailing Orlando City.
Atlanta United vs. Vancouver (7:30 pm ET; TSN2 — full TV & streaming info): So the ‘Caps are one of four teams in the league that have taken six points from two games, and they did so on the road last weekend at Houston – who, remember, I think are a Good Team™. Vancouver are unapologetic about their approach to road games: They go for the smash-and-grab.
As Farhan pointed out in that piece, this means they defend deep and rely upon their ability to scramble on the backline. They clear the ball a ton – more than any team in the league:
That’s 47, just from last game. If they’re going to get a result in Atlanta, they’ll have to do something similar.
As for the Five Stripes, Greg Garza made an interesting point after last weekend’s win, saying that it’s “lonelier” being a wingback in the 3-5-2 than a fullback in a back four. He’s right and it makes sense, and that is very obviously the area of worry from the hosts’ perspective.
Vancouver have shown in each of the two weeks that they’re devastating when allowed to counter up the flanks. Atlanta’s wingbacks were both pretty good last weekend, but any time the center backs have been asked to step out and make a play this season, they’ve gotten scorched.
Sporting KC vs. San Jose (8:30 pm ET; TV & streaming info): Way back in Week 1, after a 3-2 win over visiting MNUFC, Bobby Warshaw called San Jose “the league’s most innovative offense.” I’m gonna borrow part of his analysis:
The box midfield that results offers two advantages:
It gets numbers around the ball, while providing – with discipline – strong support in defense.
It’s uncommon in MLS.
Simply put, more numbers equals more options. As the old saying about possession goes, (passing) triangles are good; there are more triangles within four points of intersection than within three points. If you want to be a passing team, you need options around the ball.
How many times in the past five years has an MLS team had to prepare for a 4-2-2-2? Not many.
The other advantage (which Bobby touched upon) is that the Quakes play without a true, designated playmaker. That means there’s diverse options in terms of chance generation, and so in Week 1 four different San Jose players created at least three chances. Nobody’s funneling play through a No. 10 here – it’s all pass and move, often around and through Zone 14.
The downside is that even the best teams in the world at that sort of thing can run out of ideas, and that it’s a “weak link” approach as opposed to the No. 10-centric “strong link” approach. What happens if one of San Jose’s attackers is having an off day? The whole thing breaks down.
Minnesota had success late in that game at Avaya by bringing their midfield up a little bit higher and disrupting service from Florian Jungwirth and Anibal Godoy. Once those deeper two in the box were cut off from the more advanced two, San Jose weren’t innovative at all; rather, they were sloppy and vulnerable.
Real Salt Lake vs. New York Red Bulls (9 pm ET; TV & streaming info): Beyond anything else, RSL were vulnerable right up the gut against LAFC in last weekend’s 5-1 loss. And here’s what New York’s reserves did in their commanding 4-0 win over Portland:
Whether it’s the starters or a bunch of guys coming up from the USL, RBNY do the same things: Press the hell out of you and hit those third-line passes designed to cut multiple defenders out of the play. Their goal is to always get you scrambling, to pull you out of your spots and make you easy to split apart. In five games across all competitions this year they’ve outscored all comers 12-2, so it’s safe to say the plan is working.
RSL have to be smarter and more committed than they were last weekend. The fullbacks can’t afford to get pulled to the ball, the central midfielders can’t commit such sloppy turnovers, and the center backs need to be more front-foot and pro-active. LAFC’s attackers were all afforded way too much time and space to receive passes, and once that happens, goals happen.
SUNDAY’S GAME
FC Dallas vs. Seattle Sounders (5 pm ET; TV & streaming info): I honestly don’t know what we’ll see from Seattle, who were injured and slow and idea-less against a bad Chivas team in Wednesday’s dispiriting Concacaf Champions League loss. They had no real plan to advance the ball out of their own defensive third:
Forget about how bad Seattle has been on the attacking end. Here is the incomplete passes starting in their own defensive half. This is awful. pic.twitter.com/8U3egJ9Z8t
— Harrison Crow (@Harrison_Crow) March 15, 2018
Obviously injuries hurt, but Seattle had enough of their core group available up the spine of the team to produce a better outing. And look at what the Red Bulls did last week while juggling lineups. Missing seven starters is not enough of a reason for the catastrophe the Sounders produced in Guadalajara.
Dallas – who haven’t been right for nearly a year now, and maybe this isn’t just a prolonged slump; maybe it’s just who they are – have to love the idea of facing such a disorganized team, one that allows huge gaps in central midfield. Mauro Diaz (who has looked good) feasts when given that kind of time and space to operate in, and if he’s allowed to play the FCD wingers into acres behind the Sounders fullbacks, this could end up being a nightmare week for the Rave Green.
Of course “Will the Dallas forwards finish those chances?” remains an open question forever and ever.
One more thing to ponder:
Happy weekending, everybody.

New England Patriots TE Matt Lengel uses platform to assistance law enforcement - New England Patriots Blog
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Swift-hit feelings and notes all over the New England Patriots and NFL:
1. Patriots followers are even now getting to know towering restricted end Matt Lengel, who was signed off the Bengals observe squad in early November, caught a landing pass in late December versus the Jets and performed in 9 of the last 10 game titles of the 2016 period (including the playoffs).
The 6-foot-seven Lengel, 26, has been applying his platform as an up-and-coming NFL participant to emphasize something that has substantial indicating to him: Supporting law enforcement features.
Particularly, Lengel has applied his Twitter account to accept law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Lengel’s father, Brian, is a retired law enforcement officer.
“I’ve often seemed at my dad as my hero, even now to this day, and it’s not truly right until you get older that you comprehend just how dangerous it is what they do,” Lengel claimed past week. “I believe it normally takes a very special particular person to do what law enforcement officers do. I don’t believe law enforcement officers select to do what they do. I believe it chooses them.”
As a symbol of this, Lengel pointed out how when there is an announcement about the death of an officer (even these who have retired), the date of death is usually referred to as the officer’s end of look at.
This earlier week, Lengel wrote about how his “heart breaks” soon after learning of the death of New York law enforcement officer Miosotis Familia, who was shot and killed whilst sitting in a marked law enforcement cruiser.
As the son of a retired law enforcement officer, my coronary heart breaks. Human beings who voluntarily wake up, leave households, and guard versus evil everyday. https://t.co/ecnOf9nsIX
— Matt Lengel (@Colonel82) July five, 2017
“What’s the most significant to me, in reference to assistance to law enforcement officers and social media, is that they are people.” Lengel claimed. “Human beings are not perfect, but these are persons who voluntarily wake up each day and if they hear shots are fired, they are getting in their car or truck and driving to it whilst other folks are going in the opposite course.
“What transpired to them may well have an effect on them as negative as another person else. You don’t know the occasions that induce that person’s spouse and children to be disrupted, how annoying the work is. These are human beings, with liked types, that want to go dwelling at the end of the day. That is what I hope to get across.”
Lengel, who is from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, has experienced an unconventional football journey. He’s also experienced a unforgettable offseason. he acquired married two weeks back, which brought a lot of of his former teammates jointly from Northeastern College, Eastern Kentucky and the Bengals.
Lengel’s spouse, Lauren, shares in the assistance for law enforcement officers. Her mother and father worked as officers, and her stepfather is a law enforcement chief. Matt claimed some of his greatest friends from university have also turn out to be law enforcement officers, in New York, Lexington, Kentucky and New Orleans.
At Eastern Kentucky, Lengel majored in political science and went on to get his master’s degree in physical instruction. He planned to go into some kind of law enforcement if his football career did not take off.
“When I get suited up for a activity, it normally takes me back again to when I went on a single SWAT connect with with [his father]. We parked, he place his vest on, his fingers are freezing, and he’s getting his activity facial area on to kick in a doorway and pull somebody out,” Lengel claimed. “I go back again to that and it helps me with any pregame jitters. My everyday living is not on the line.”
If Lengel carries on to grow as a participant and sticks with the Patriots, he hopes to extend his operate increasing recognition for law enforcement officers.
As our chat was coming to a summary, he experienced a single last thing to increase: “Anything I can do for the Boston Law enforcement Division, permit me know.”
2. The Patriots don’t have a lot of big situation battles entering teaching camp later this month, but Lengel and the backup restricted end spot is a single of take note. Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen job as the top two restricted finishes, then it’s Lengel (6-foot-seven, 267), James O’Shaughnessy (6-foot-four, 245) and undrafted rookies Jacob Hollister (6-foot-four, 239) and Sam Cotton (6-foot-four, 250) vying for a possible third spot. Lengel’s offseason has been impacted by a finger personal injury that expected offseason surgery, and the club has been bringing him together little by little.
three. As usual, Miguel Benzan of Patsfans.com does a thorough work breaking down the specifics of linebacker David Harris’ two-year contract with the Patriots. Harris has a wage-cap charge of $2.84 million in 2017, and then it could perhaps spike to $three.875 million in 2018. Though the deal is technically a two-year pact, the economic impression is confined if the Patriots decide to move on soon after just a single period.
four. In the often-fulfilling “Know Them From Adam” podcast, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter interviewed absolutely free-agent jogging back again DeAngelo Williams, who claimed he’d indicator with 28 teams, but “the other four are computerized no.” Williams then advised Schefter he need to start a poll to see if followers could guess the four and that he would share the four teams at a later date. I voted and figured including the Patriots was a protected preference based mostly on Williams’ earlier trolling of the franchise. Many others evidently agreed.
An August trade for nose tackle Ted Washington paved the way to a Super Bowl in 2003 for the Patriots. It was Washington’s only period with the workforce, and was a single of 7 stops in a 17-year NFL career. Jim Rogash/AP
five. Very good point by Chris Warner, who contributes to the Boston Sporting activities Media Check out web-site, about not forgetting the impression of the Patriots’ trade for nose tackle Ted Washington in 2003 when position the greatest offseasons in Invoice Belichick’s tenure. Acquiring Washington for a fourth-round decide was a single of the team’s top trades, as the creator of the “Homeland Defense” nickname was a rock in the middle of the three-four alignment. Recalling that deal also sparked a imagined of a much more the latest trend with the Patriots: Individuals styles of trades have advanced into the club not wanting to give up a decide for a participant with no acquiring a decreased decide in return as properly (e.g. Martellus Bennett, Allen, O’Shaughnessy, and many others.).
6. Not guaranteed that New Hampshire International Speedway could have produced a better preference than Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to generate the speed car or truck for subsequent Sunday’s Overton’s 301. Who else in the New England sports landscape has orchestrated much more speedy starts off?
seven. Did You Know: ESPN’s Stats & Details notes that it is just 60 times right until the NFL opener amongst the Patriots and Chiefs, and as section of its numbers-based mostly theme, features up this Giants-based mostly nugget: Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall have 60 put together acquiring touchdowns considering that 2014. Beckham is tied for 1st in that time span and Marshall is seventh. They are teammates for the 1st time this year.
eight. Great tale from Angelique Fiske of Patriots.com on former New England linebacker Dane Fletcher (forty four game titles performed from 2010-13) and his transition to a publish-participating in career, as he opened a exercise facility in his native Montana. There are a lot of stories of players battling as they move to the subsequent stage of their lives, but there are also a lot of stories equivalent to the 30-year-aged Fletcher’s that need to also be advised. A single of the greatest sections to me is how he highlighted the assistance of his former Patriots teammates, these as Tom Brady.
9. With baseball’s all-star crack established to arrive, it acquired me imagining about the football edition of the event and what the league can do otherwise to make the Professional Bowl much more pertinent. I vote for doing away with the activity — it’s not even actual football — and producing it some kind of imaginative techniques competitiveness that permits followers to connect much more with players in a different way. Heading that route, and doing away with the personal injury threat for players, may well in fact lead to fewer players pulling out of the event and supplying it much more of an all-star kind truly feel.
10. Can you visualize the joy a father would have to see two of his kids married in a span of a few weeks on wonderful New England summer weekends? No doubt, it’s been a unforgettable and significant offseason for Patriots mentor Invoice Belichick.
