Bag Tour 2024: Daily Bag Edition Feat. Hannibal Lector
All images have alt text descriptions with items listed, bag tour, and the reasons for each item below the cut
The Bag Itself:
This bag is a Coach Turnlock Tote bag in the pebbled leather color Blossom. This bag, the belt bag I now use as a bag organizer, and the wallet were all gifted to me in 2019 by a family member. The belt is too large for me at this point in life, so the pouch has been repurposed as a Toolkit of sorts. While it is a hair small fully packed, I enjoy the color of it and the balance of it as well as the functionality of the pockets it has.
The Straps:
My straps on this bag usually aren't this cluttered. However, Hannibal has been coming with me to work on a daily basis to get him used to the idea of traveling, and I needed a place to put his harness.
On my straps there is a malachite pendant necklace attached to the charm loop at the bottom of the right side of the outer strap, and my keys are also usually attached here with a carabiner unless I'm going somewhere that I'd want my keys a little bit more secured. I just like malachite. It looks cool. It's the right shades of green, and it's fairly easy to get ahold of.
I also have my stethoscope looped here if it's not around my neck or on my desk at home. I have a neonate size littman stethoscope since I primarily work in companion animal medicine, and I find that it focuses a bit better on my patients who are less than 15 pounds. I do have a regular litmann as well, but that one stays at the office. Most of my after-hours calls are on cats and small geriatric dogs who have standing orders for as needed injections of certain medications whose owners are either unwilling or unable to administer those medications.
Then, the big thing on the straps today is Hannibal's harness. Little dude is 17 weeks, and a whopping 7 lbs already. I could gush about him literally all day, though. His harness was only on the bag while he was allowed to have free roam over the back of the reception area and wrestle with Chewbacca (my terrier).
Turnlock Pocket:
This is where I keep my human med kit for myself, plus treats for my pets, or snacks for myself. Image 8 is the corresponding image.
Human Med Kit:
Glucometer: I have struggled with Non-diabetic hypoglycemia, POTS, and hemiplegic migraines for about 7 years now due to a moderate traumatic brain injury in my teens. So I tend to take 2-5 glucose readings per day. The rubber gloves in my glucometer bag aren't for me to use on me so much as they are to be ready if I need to assist someone in a first aid setting or administer narcan to someone.
Excedrine Migraine: A tried and true beloved OTC medication, both my terrier, Chewbacca, and my malinois, Phobos, are trained for migraine alert and POTS electrolyte imbalance alert work, although Chewbacca is retired at this point. At the first migraine alert from my dogs, I take one tablet of Excedrine and then wait an hour. If the migraine continues to worsen, I then take the second half of the regular dose. This is what works for me, and you should talk to your doctor about treatment options if you have migraines. Currently, I'm down to only 2-4 migraines a month and only experiencing breakthrough hemiplegic migraine symptoms about once every 3 months with this routine.
Narcan: I carry it everywhere. I was never an opioid addict. However, after my TBI, I did struggle with perscription amphetamine addiction, and as a result of having been through that, and having gotten clean, I've become a really big proponent of harm reduction and narcan access programs. There's a few charities I'm involved with that give away narcan locally, and I'd be happy to put anyone interested in carrying narcan some national resources. I also live fairly close to Philadelphia and have unfortunately had to utilize narcan to assist strangers in bars in the past from tainted supplies.
Menstrual cup: I have PCOS, so my cycle isn't super regular and I'd rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.
Not Pictured: My supply of both instant iced coffee, instant electrolytes, and protein bars that I keep in my glove box, office desk, and at home. Both the caffiene (increases blood pressure) and the electrolytes (increases sodium and potassium) are important in managing my POTS symptoms. The protein bars are for when my glucose drops a bit too far.
Chicken Churu: This was Hannibal's treat for today, we worked on saying hello to strangers and walking nicely on a leash.
Tech:
Corresponding Photos: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, & 9
Samsung Galaxybook Go: This is my laptop for work and personal use, it has an LTE data chip so I can use it on the go without sucking up my Hotspot data, and it's got fantastic battery life. I bought this refurbished off of Amazon at the beginning of the year. It also charges with a USB-C cable which is super convenient since the rest of my tech with the exception of my smart watch also utilizes USB-C charging so I can just pack a fast charge block and 2 USB-C cables rather than lug around 5 different chargers.
Samsung Galaxytab S6 Lite: It was on special at costco and has an S-Pen which is great as someone who's memory for reading/typing isn't nearly as effective as my memory for things I've written down. I mostly use this for notes on patients and my studies.
Samsung Galaxy23 Ultra: It has a stylus and is of a similar design, feel, and functionality to my Note9 I just replaced last fall.
Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro: The active noise cancelling is fantastic for working in busy coffee shops on Mondays, and the Ambient sound is great for getting a Podcast in during charting or longer monitoring stints.
Samsung Galaxy Watch5: LTE enabled watch helps when I'm away from my phone during the day, it allows me to still get calls, texts, notifications, and keep track of active time and calories burned.
Charging Bundle: One 8" USB-C -> USB-C cord for charging my tablet, phone, or earbuds off of my laptop, one 4' USB-C -> USB-C cord to charge my laptop or other devices if my laptop is sufficently charged, a USB-A -> hard drive cord for my 1TB portable drive, and a USB-A Smart watch charging cord.
Data storage: 8GB flash drive that is mostly used for ultrasound capture transfers and X-Ray Diacom transfers, although occasionally it also gets used for in-house lab data transfers when the WiFi link is acting up. 1 TB portable hard drive, this contains textbook PDFs, a large music library, archived notes, and lesser used reference tables and software. It also has copies of my more important documents.
Vlogging/Content Creation Supplies: Light bar, microphone, mini tripod, comfort grip, and microphone stand. Basically just stuff to enhance recording quality for tiktoks, reels, and YouTube videos (coming soon).
Books & Stationery:
Pocket Edition Book of Common Prayer: No, I am not carrying a Bible around, I have an app for that. This is a Book of Common Prayer (1979 edition) for The Episcopal Church. While I'm laity, I do still try and take time for Morning Prayer/Matin, Noonday Prayer/Diurnum, Evening Prayer/Evensong, and End of Day Prayer/Compline. These are quiet moments for me to break away from the stressors of the day. I also utilize 2 additional devotionals for quiet time upon rising and before bed that supplement my regular journaling, however these stay on my bedside table with my primary journal.
Martha Stewart For Staples Discbound Junior Notebook, this is my planner, quick notebook, and lazy journal, I basically dump my brain out right here throughout the day.
Paper clips: From marking off the current month and week in my planner to organizing papers from drug reps, to getting a client printed copies of their records, there's lots of paperclip usage.
Correction tape: I don't often use pencils and sometimes my brain goes faster than my hand and mistakes happen.
Erasers and pencil leads: If I'm out and about I don't want to lose my ability to sketch and use pencils if they're needed
Pens: Pink, Red, and Black ink, my standard for personal notes is Pink ink, while business notes are done in black, the red is for corrections on both
Pencil: it's the same grip as my favorite pens that I can write for hours with, super beneficial for long study sessions.
S Note App: My longer rough notes and revised notes are done in SNote with a SPen/stylus and handwritten out. I also tend to keep spare nibs on hand, however I am currently out of spare nibs.
Sticky notes/flags: great for passing off notes to coworkers, flagging charts, or marking messages.
Snack Attack:
Travel Cutlery set with a fork, spoon, and knife so that I don't have to get utensils when I grab breakfast or lunch at Wawa or the local BBQ joint
Travel straw: Save the turtles while still enjoying my Starbucks
Bandana/neckerchief: No single use napkins here
Coozie: Perfect for NA Seltzers, Sodas, or a beer at the bar after work. Plus it holds all my other eating supplies.
Beauty/Hygiene:
Hand lotion: washing hands between every patient can leave my hands feeling pretty gnarly, so I always pack lotion
Perfume: Anal Glands happen, and sometimes you just... need to freshen up a bit.
Dry Shampoo: my hair always looks super greasy after taking my scrub cap off after surgeries, this buys me enough time to get through my shift
Hand sanitizer: ideal for housecall visits or visits to elder care facilities where you may not be able to properly wash your hands between patients.
Lip gloss: I'm not a huge fan of lip balms and the waxy feeling they leave on my lips vs the glide of a lipgloss or oil.
Sewing kit: Because if your shirt rips in vet med, it's probably going to be in a place you really don't want it to rip
Manicure kit: wrestling with animals can cause nail breakage and hang nails, and I'd rather not have to chew one off. It also has tweezers that come in handy for splinters or thorns picked up from animal coats.
Blotting sponge: again, I tend to start looking greasy after surgery because I sweat. And I'd rather be able to take care of it quickly and discreetly
Condoms: These don't need to be in my work bag, but they're in the tool kit along with my most basic essentials because the Toolkit is in every bag I use, including bags I use when I go out for girls night or linedancing. Also another have and not need vs need and not have item.
Hair tie, bobby pins, barette: just little extra bits and bobs as needed for hair issues, sometimes the dry shampoo isn't enough and the only solution is to throw my hair up into a slicked back ponytail instead of having it down.
Cooling wet wipe: again, surgical sweating
Other Essentials:
Wallet: Obvious Reasons
Nicotine Pouches: I've quit vaping but I haven't quite kicked the habit entirely yet
Unpictured: Glock 43. I uber and doordash after work, I also deliver controlled substances for patients in some not-so-great areas being ravaged by the opioid epidemic. I'm also a 5'5" disabled female who lives alone and has had a stalker. Sorry not sorry, it's insured, I'm licensed, and I take courses for it routinely.
If you have any questions, comments, or thoughts, feel free to DM me, comment here, comment in the tags, or reblog. Also, I'm aware this is Tumblr and that the Jesus stuff can be frightening to see, just want to make note that I do fall somewhere between a pluralist and a universalist. As long as you aren't using your religious views to oppress, marginalize, or harm people, we're good as far as I'm concerned.

A Fountain of Youth?: Unlocking the Power of BOTOX®
BOTOX® in Philadelphia remains a popular minimally invasive solution for anyone looking to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, presenting a fantastic option for individuals aiming to maintain a youthful appearance. This article delves into the world of BOTOX®, exploring its uses, benefits, and what one might expect from a treatment.
What Is BOTOX®?
BOTOX®, scientifically known as Botulinum toxin, is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When used in small, controlled doses this neuromodulator temporarily reduces muscle activity, effectively diminishing the appearance of facial wrinkles and lines. Its application is not limited to cosmetic purposes; BOTOX® also has medical uses, such as treating certain muscle disorders, excessive sweating, migraines, and more.
The Procedure
Administering BOTOX® is a straightforward, non-surgical process that typically takes just a few minutes and does not require anesthesia. It involves injecting small amounts of the medication into specific facial muscles. The injection inhibits signals from the nerves reaching the muscles, preventing contractions and causing wrinkles to relax and soften. BOTOX injections improve the balance and harmony of the face in motion and at rest. While the treatment is quick and involves minimal discomfort, the choice of a skilled and experienced practitioner is crucial to achieving the desired results.
What Can BOTOX® Treat?
BOTOX® is primarily renowned for its ability to treat and mitigate the appearance of facial wrinkles, including crow's feet, forehead lines, frown lines, pouting of the mouth, and even help smooth the skin However, its versatility extends beyond cosmetic enhancements. The medication is also used to alleviate symptoms associated with bruxism (teeth grinding), hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and chronic migraines, showcasing its diverse range of applications.
Benefits of BOTOX®
Opting for a wrinkle relaxer comes with numerous advantages. First and foremost, it provides a non-surgical solution to age-related skin concerns, making it an attractive option for those hesitant about more invasive procedures. The treatment offers quick results, typically visible within days to weeks, and it requires no downtime, allowing individuals to resume their daily activities right away. Additionally, treatments are customizable, with the potential to adjust the dosage and targeted areas to suit individual needs and expectations.
Safety and Side Effects
The safety of BOTOX® injections, when performed by qualified and experienced injectors, is well-documented. Most individuals experience minimal side effects, if any. Possible temporary side effects may include slight bruising, swelling at the injection site, or mild headache. It's essential to discuss any concerns and medical history with a healthcare provider before undergoing treatment to minimize risks and ensure suitability of the injections.
Choosing the Right Provider
The success of BOTOX® treatments largely depends on the skill and experience of the provider. It's vital to select a qualified, board-physician who has extensive experience with the injections and provides treatments in a controlled medical setting. A reputable provider will offer a thorough consultation to discuss goals and potential risks, as well as tailor a treatment plan that meets individual needs.
The Role of BOTOX® in Overall Skin Care
While BOTOX® effectively addresses specific concerns, it should also be part of a broader skin health and beauty strategy. Integrating wrinkle-relaxing treatments with other skin care regimens and treatments can amplify results, offering comprehensive solutions for maintaining a youthful, radiant look. Experienced practitioners can provide guidance on combining BOTOX® with other cosmetic services for optimal outcomes.
Conclusion
In the evolving landscape of cosmetic treatments, BOTOX® remains a cornerstone for those looking to diminish the signs of aging without undergoing surgical procedures. Its versatility, minimal downtime, and proven effectiveness make it an appealing choice for many. As interest in BOTOX® continues to expand, especially in Philadelphia, the importance of choosing an experienced provider like Buinewicz Plastic Surgery cannot be overstated.
For more information or to schedule a consultation regarding BOTOX® treatments, contact Buinewicz Plastic Surgery.

t.w. cancer, medical, leukemia
Thought I would start using this Tumblr again because I have recently been diagnosed with leukemia. Specifically chronic myeloid leukemia. And I need somewhere to vent about it that won't be hard or painful for my friends and family.
I'm lucky in that so far it seems like it will be treatable, medicine has been developed. I might not even need to have chemo. 30 years ago my type of leukemia was pretty much a death sentence, but because of that the doctors worked hard and eventually came up with a medicine, tyran kinase (I may have gotten that word wrong) inhibitors, TKIs, that block the message my leukemia cells are sending to reproduce and crowd out my bone marrow and blood with faulty white blood cells. That's my current understanding.
It's been not very long at all. I got really sick with bad migraine headaches at the end of January, but it had slowly been getting bad for awhile. A random medical course of events set connected like a daisy chain that led to me sitting in a neurologists office on the 21st of February 2024 hearing the words 'Philadelphia Chromosome' 'myeloproliferative disorders' 'leukaemia' 'must see a haemotologist right away, as soon as you can'. It's not been one instant diagnosis though instead it's been an unfolding diagnosis, like a flower opening to reveal inner petals. Currently it seems likely to be CML in the chronic (early/asymptomatic stage). But I will find out in 3 days, on the 6th of March, what I have and what stage it is at. 2 days ago I had my first ever bone marrow biopsy, which was pretty chill really.
I think I'm still in shock, a bit. I'm focusing on the silver linings, of which there are many: I'm probably not gonna die from this, I probably have CML and it's probably in chronic stage, I can get treatment out of a pill rather than chemo, I was diagnosed after medicine existed - not before... There's a lot to be thankful for.
But it's still frikkin leukemia. And I'm quietly scared that on Wednesday I'll be told, oh sorry actually it's much worse than we thought and you're gonna die soon.
Either way, I'm scrappy. I'm silly little princess of sweetness BUT I am also wily and strong. I will never give up and I will fight tooth and nail til the end. I'm not the kind to refuse treatment and die with dignity, screw dignity, I want life.
The main reason I'm going to live is because I have a child that I love with all my heart. The second reason is just for myself, I like the world and I wanna become an old wrinkly lady who has lots of goats and books.
I'm trying to stay positive, and I'm succeeding. I'm also in the weird position of needing to tell my close family and friends but also comfort them at the same time. I've gone into crisis mode wanting to protect everyone from me, from this.
I'm okay really. But it is a lot.

hello my friends, one singular person asked for this weeks ago so i’m here with my most unhinged rec list yet: tk and nolan.
now, this one was hard to reign in, so i really didn’t. this pairing had maybe 230 fics in the tag when i first started reading hockey fic, and it’s now over 900, and i’ve read far too many of them, and that makes it so hard to parse it down. so i just...didn't!
so with that said, please enjoy so you want to get into tknp: a beginners guide to a classic case of idiots to lovers
i told myself that i couldn’t rec an author’s entire body of work but then i remembered this is my blog and i do what i want, so i did some consolidating. here’s a list of the quintessential authors for this pairing, you can start at any of their profiles and pick any of their fics at random, and it’ll be one of the best ones for the pairing, hands down.
therainbowsedge: i’d start with the summer camp fic, or the sex toys one, as both beautifully capture the true idiots to lovers nature of this pairing, but just top tier writing all around
manybumblebees: the wedding fic is so tender and port stanley is a classic, but literally pick any single fic and you’ll have a perfect tknp fic. i’m not kidding
jamesvanriemsdick: their tknp fics in their series are some of the hidden gems of this pairing (the tk heartbeat fic makes me LOSE it) but the delaware fic or the seattle fic…..there’s really something for every mood
catchascatchcan: start with era of gods because i could write literal essays on how it’s some of the best fantasy worldbuilding i’ve ever read, but then just read everything else on their account, including non tknp fics. you won’t regret it
hackysack: ao3 user hackysack has written one of two timeloop fics that i absolutely adore, and i thought about just calling that one out in particular, but all of their work deserves the attention
canary: nothing to prove was the first tknp fic i ever read and i was immediately hooked. all of their fics are a good starting place for the pairing, and just really give you a feeling for the pairing
and now, for the fic recs!
to be, despite it all by smudgedfreckles
summary: or, nolan patrick’s gender thesis, by travis konecny.
why i love it: there’s not a lot ofo nonbinary characters in media, even in fic, but this fic’s treatment of nolan and their path to figuring out their gender just feels so real and made me feel so seen. tk’s characterization is also just top notch, and it’s just a super sweet story about two people who love each other
last ones standing by makeit_takeit
summary: If you’re committed to finding your future spouse, reads the last line of the ad, and are ready to look at yourself and your love life in a whole new way, apply now.
At the bottom of the ad there’s a link, and Travis finds his finger hovering over the screen, lip still caught between his teeth.
“I mean,” he says very reasonably, speaking out loud to his empty apartment like some sort of possibly-crazy person, “just applying doesn’t mean anything. Maybe I just fill it out, and see what happens. It’s not like I’m really gonna get picked to be on TV, come on.”
He snorts out loud, just to show his apartment he hasn’t lost his grip on reality or anything; he fully understands how ludicrous that would be.
Then he clicks the link anyway, because yolo or whatever.
why i love it: what part of a married at first sight fic doesn’t make you want to immediately dive right in? the concept is fun, the execution is absolutely flawless, and it captures their dynamic so well while letting it develop naturally
motivation by connectknee
summary: Kevin knows when to back off, the article said. He knows just when to shut up and leave Patty alone, something Travis has never known how to do.
why i love it: the thing i love about this pairing is that tk is loud and in your face, and nolan’s more reserved, a little quieter, a little harder to read. this fic does a really great job of exploring how tk could feel like maybe he’s just a bit too much and is one of my favorites in terms of miscommunication
a tenderness grows by rusesdeguerre
summary: Nolan wouldn’t say that landing a job as the Philadelphia Flyers’ psychotic and probably clinically insane mascot was a childhood dream of his. Maybe tangentially: playing pond hockey in –30°C weather and pretending to be Sidney Crosby is practically a rite of passage when you grow up in Manitoba. That, and experiencing the distinct displeasure that is thousands of mosquitoes sucking your blood out when your father drags you on a father-son camping trip into the backwoods of the northern Canadian Prairies.
why i love it: this was the first fic i recced on this blog, and i stand by that decision. a fic where nolan is not only not a hockey player, but is in fact the person in the gritty suit? absolutely perfect, and so charming from start to finish
meet me at my window by springsteen
summary: Travis has lived in Philadelphia for a few years now, long enough to know there isn’t a major city in America where superheroes don’t destroy an entire city block trying to save humanity or whatever. He can deal with all the super-shit, but Travis did not sign up for getting woken up from a deep sleep because some fucker’s trying to break in through his window.
(5 times the super-villain known as "The Cat" breaks into Travis's apartment, plus 1 time Travis invites him in.)
why i love it: there’s a lot of things to love here, but the concept is just absolutely one of my all time favorite aus ever. it’s fun and charming and the perfect glimpse into a world where heroes and villains exist, and what it’s like just to be a run of the mill kind of guy existing in it. tk and nolan’s back and forth in this make it so engaging, and it’s such a top tier fic
body’s in trouble by cloudsandpassingevents
summary: “Oh, sorry,” someone says. “Didn’t know anyone else was here.”
Nolan freezes, then turns around very slowly. When he looks up, Nicklas fucking Backstrom is standing behind him in a hoodie and baggy sweats, holding the biggest bag of Swedish Fish Nolan’s ever seen in his life in one hand.
“Uh,” Nolan says around the pop tart between his teeth. “Yeah.”
What the fuck, his brain helpfully supplies.
why i love it: from nolan’s inner voice, to the way the author explores all the dynamics within the team, to the way they write the unexpected but actually, it kind of makes sense friendship between nolan and backstrom, is just absolutely fantastic. there’s a lot of moments that circle back and build on each other in a way that really just makes it super compelling
rhizomatic foundations by lighthousetowers
summary: Twenty days after he moves in with Kevin Hayes, twenty days – three months, five months, depending on how you look at it – after not talking to TK, TK shows up at the front door with a plant the size of a basketball in his hands.
TK grins. "Patty, meet Reginald." He lifts up the plant. "Reggie, meet Patty. He's going to be your new - caretaker."
"What the fuck," says Nolan, not moving a single muscle.
Or: That Nolan can hear the plant talk might as well just happen.
why i love it: this is probably my favorite magical realism fic just about ever. it’s fun and charming and a little weird, but in the best possible way. there’s such a wonderful narrative in it, and lighthousetowers always has such beautiful writing, and it really shines in this one. the dialogue and nolan’s characterization are also part of what set it apart for me as one of the best tknp fics
in the dark of any town by mengetpegged
summary: If the voice has an accent at all, it’s a flat prairie Canadian, with none of G’s French-Canadian softness at the edges. But mostly, the accent is just ‘pissed off,’ which TK believes is a default setting for ghosts.
“Who are you?” TK asks, and he doesn’t like how strained his voice sounds, doesn’t like the tinge of anxiety tinting the rise of his question. He tries to regulate his breaths—in through his nose, hold, out through his mouth—but it feels like he’s not getting enough oxygen, which makes him panic even more.
“Someone with a fucking migraine, dickhead,” the voice says. “So keep the lights off and shut the hell up.”
(or: Nolan Patrick, Hotel X Ghost)
why i love it: i’m usually not super into ghost fics, both the spooky kind and the nonspooky kind, but this one is a rare exception. it’s charming and fun and tender and it’s got some of, in my opinion, the best characterization of tk and nolan in any fic. the way the author writes their dynamic and their dialogue is just unmatched
lets_make_this_moment_a_crime.mp3 by honeydripping
summary: Travis meets Nolan at a Midtown show in 2002 when he punches Nolan in the face. He can’t help it, “Like A Movie” just goes off.
But he does feel guilty about it.
or
TK and Patty work at a bakery together. They go to punk shows to pass the time.
why i love it: idk if anyone asked for an early 2000s emo/punk/alt au but wow! i sure am glad it exists! really the vibes of this fic, as silly as that sounds, are absolutely unmatched. i love the structure with the music, the development of their relationship, and just everything about how the author wrote the setting (there’s this whole thing with tattoos in it that makes me feel absolutely insane)
you’re ripped at every edge by you’re a masterpiece by conformityissuicide
summary: “Ugh, look, this yoga teacher has it out for me, man. And I can’t go back there without at least having some of the basics down. I’ve got to win this battle.”
“Yoga isn’t really something you win at,” Hartsy starts.
Travis cuts him off, “You can win at anything if you try hard enough.”
+++
OR that time Nolan's a grumpy yoga teacher and Travis realizes he wants to bone him and prove him wrong about Travis' non-existent yoga abilities.
why i love it: listen, if you want tknp, at least one of them has to be an idiot, and this tk absolutely captures the obliviousness i love to see in him in fic. it’s such a great characterization of them both and such a great concept (and even better execution)
you form a terror pack (and i’m aware of that) by dalmatienne
summary: “Can I help you?” TK snarks, both eyebrows hiked up in a way that has earned her many elbow checks to the ribs.
The chick looks down her nose, long thick eyelashes fluttering. Red-bitten lips part to blow a florid pink bubble and TK can smell the chemical sweetness when it pops.
“Yeah,” she says in this monotonous voice that seems almost at odds with her bubble gum and neon skates. She jams her stopper into TK’s thigh again, literally inches away from where it’d really hurt. “Tie ‘em.”
why i love it: to be honest, i generally don’t read rule 63 within hrpf, but this one is just absolutely knocks it out of the park. the concept (i fuckin’ love roller derby), the characterization of nolan, the pacing, the rituals, the tone of the entire fic, it’s just all around a perfect read from start to finish
thrills and grills by bitter_leaf
summary: Travis can’t even begin to wonder what he did in a previous life to incur the wrath of this fucking cook. Travis thinks he’s a nice person, doesn’t conduct himself in any way that could be considered particularly dickish, and unless this guy has some sort of issue with hockey bros or people from the boonies, he’s not sure how he started shit without even knowing.
__
Patty has a vendetta. Travis just wants to eat his eggs in peace.
why i love it: honestly this is the enemies to lovers fic i’ve been waiting for. i remember seeing the reddit post when it first went viral and thinking it would make such a great fic premise, so stumbling across this one was just so wonderful. super engaging and fun and so hilarious to read!
nothing but room for you by fightingfuries
summary: When his agent tells him he’s going to be traded to the Devils, Nolan isn't sure how he feels about it. Might be easier if he was going somewhere farther away, like California or fucking Florida. Somewhere sun-soaked and foreign. Someplace so different from Philadelphia that he can forget he ever played for the Flyers, forget everything that happened there.
Or Nolan fucks up, gets traded, gets his shit together and falls in love. Not necessarily in that order.
why i love it: i cannot stress to you how much i love trade fics, and this one is one of my absolute favorites. the trade to the devils-so close to philly, still, but there’s more to distance than physical miles-was such an excellent choice and the split timeline adds so much to the narrative, and the emotions are real and messy and complicated in the best way
a couple of runaways (i’m glad you stayed) by overturnedgoal
summary: The person in the video he’s watching is super annoying. Some obnoxious holier than thou granola type who keeps talking about their environmental impact as if they aren’t driving a gas guzzler around, but the basic idea of living in a van, driving around wherever, camping all the time, just going hiking and swimming and seeing the whole country? It sounds pretty dope, honestly.
why i love it: i like to watch tours and conversions of vans/buses into tiny homes as a self soothing method, and this fic has the same impact that watching those do. it’s such a fun concept, and it’s so fuckin’ soft, and the dialouge between tk and nolan is just *chef’s kiss*
all candor and style in the crook of your smile by p3trichor
summary: It’s a photo of Nolan on his knees with someones’ fingers in his mouth, lips slick with spit. Travis flicks by it almost too fast and he’s only got seconds to decide if he wants to screenshot it, if he wants to just give up the ghost right then and there. Except Travis’s phone freezes momentarily and then the group refreshes, sidcros87, Bert59 and 14 others took a screenshot!
It’s gone before Travis even has time to process it and he already wasted his replay of the day on a stupid video of a stupid fish that Hayes caught.
Can you send me that screenshot Travis texts Bertuzzi before he can overthink it, his dick already stirring in his sweats. Tuzzi sends back the cry-laughing emoji and then the screenshot before Travis can be too annoyed at him.
Or, Nolan is being weird about Travis's break-up and TK is maybe not straight.
why i love it: i genuinely don’t think i have words for the amount i love this fic. it took me forever to actually read, but it’s absolutely one of my favorite fics, and it’s an absolutely riot to read. carter’s meddling and the presence of tyler bertuzzi both make it extra fun, in my humble opinion

Study Finds Topiramate (Topamax) Effective for Adolescent Weight Loss
Tumblr media
MedicalResearch.com Interview with: Dr. Panganiban Jennifer Panganiban, MD Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Director, Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Clinic Children's Hospital of Philadelphia MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? Response: Obesity now affects 1 in 5 children and adolescents in the United States with an estimated prevalence of 13.7 million. We know that this is not only an issue in the US but a worldwide epidemic. Lifestyle modification is the primary treatment of obesity, which can be successful but is limited. Off-label use of medications for weight loss in youth is increasing secondary to the limited availability of FDA approved medications for weight-loss.  MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings? Response: Topiramate prescribed for any indication, such as migraines, resulted in weight loss or BMI stabilization in children 2-21 years of age. This was more pronounced in ages 14-21 years of age if topiramate was prescribed specifically for weight-loss for 1-3 months.  MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?  Response: Topiramate is an effective weight loss medication and should be considered as an adjunct to lifestyle intervention, with the greatest effects noted when prescribed in adolescents. MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work? Response: We recommend randomized controlled clinical trials examining the efficacy of Topiramate in childhood obesity.     MedicalResearch.com: Is there anything else you would like to add?  Response: Additional analysis has showed that Topiramate may also be beneficial in obese children with Non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with noted improvement in the liver enzyme, alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Long-Term Disability and Migraines
Millions of Americans suffer from migraine headaches each year. Some people only get them occasionally, but others are victims of chronic, frequent migraines that noticeably diminish their ability to perform the work duties and responsibilities. Because of this limitation, those who suffer from disabling migraines may qualify for individual or group long-term disability benefits.
If you or someone you love is trying to provide for themselves and their family through terrible migraines, a Philadelphia long-term disability lawyer can help ensure you receive the help you need.
What Causes Migraines?
Migraines are a form of severe headaches that can last for several hours or sometimes for days on end. They are often accompanied by sensitivity to sound and light, nausea, blurred vision, vomiting, and even debilitating fatigue. Doctors don’t know what exactly causes migraines, but believe them to be neurological in nature and originating from the brain stem. There are various possible triggers, including:
  Age
  Food
  Alcohol
  Family history
Hormonal changes
Migraines are normally self-reported, meaning that physicians provide a diagnosis based on the patient’s reported symptoms, instead of from the results of an objective test. In an individual files a long-term disability claim for their migraines, the insurance company will want convincing proof and medical evidence such as a diagnostic test, or other persuasive indication that shows you have a defined medical condition preventing you from performing the duties of your occupation.
Instead of denying claims based on self reported conditions right away, many individual or group long-term disability insurers restrict the length of time that a person can receive benefits by periods of 12, 18, or 24 months.
How To Track Your Migraine Pain
After you have visited your doctor, a great next step to help defend your disability claim it to keep a pain and headache journal, where you track:
Dates and number of hours you had to miss work or couldn’t perform key duties of your occupation (due to migraines)
Length and severity of each migraine, along with any other symptoms you experienced (light and sound sensitivity, nausea, etc.)
Effects on your daily life, even minor inconveniences
Documenting the intensity, frequency, and potency of your migraines is very important to keep and constantly update
Why You Should Keep Seeing Your Doctor After Being Diagnosed
You may have suffered from migraines for years, and your treating doctor may have diagnosed you with migraine headaches sometime in the past. However, you still should see your treating doctor, especially if your migraines’ severity, intensity, or frequency has increased. Insurance companies want to see preventative medicines prescribed, coupled with with abortive medicines for when migraines hit. Remember that there is no objective, established test for migraine headaches. Your treating doctor can only diagnose you using information from the symptoms you personally describe. You should tell your treating doctor everything, while carefully relaying even your minor problems. It may also be in your best interest to discuss with them whether any tests may rule out underlying causes. Your treating doctor may prescribe medication or other treatments that might help reduce or prevent your migraines.

It depends on the standard of 'like fixes like'. At the end of the day, a substance taken in limited quantities will fix similar indications it causes whenever taken in huge sums.

Implantable Devices Are Not A Panacea, But The Ability To Relieve Migraine Attacks
Implantable Devices Are Not A Panacea, But The Ability To Relieve Migraine Attacks. An implantable motto cryptic in the nape of the neck may average more headache-free days for people with severe migraines that don't respond to other treatments, a original study suggests. More than 36 million Americans get migraine headaches, which are marked by impetuous pain, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and vomiting, according to the Migraine Research Foundation bhai ko viagra khilakar chudayi karwayi. Medication and lifestyle changes are the first-line treatments for migraine, but not each and every one improves with these measures. The St Jude Medical Genesis neurostimulator is a short, skinny strip that is implanted behind the neck. A battery horde is then implanted elsewhere in the body. Activating the device stimulates the occipital nerve and can slow-witted the pain of migraine headache testmedplus.com. "There are a large number of patients for whom nothing works and whose lives are ruined by the regular pain of their migraine headache, and this device has the potential to help some of them," said bone up author Dr Stephen D Silberstein, director of the Jefferson Headache Center in Philadelphia. The study, which was funded by signet manufacturer St Jude Medical Inc, is slated for debut on Thursday at the International Headache Congress in Berlin, and is the largest study to date on the device penis spray buy oman. The actors is now seeking approval for the device in Europe and then plans to submit their data to the US Food and Drug Administration for rubber stamp in the United States. Researchers tested the new device in 157 mortals who had severe migraines about 26 days out of each month. After 12 weeks, those who received the unfamiliar device had seven more headache-free days per month, compared to one more headache-free day per month seen in the midst people in the control group. Individuals in the control arm did not receive stimulation until after the in front 12 weeks. Study participants who received the stimulator also reported less severe headaches and improvements in their calibre of life. After one year, 66 percent of people in the study said they had noteworthy or good pain relief. The pain reduction seen in the study did fall short of FDA standards, which petition for a 50 percent reduction in pain. "The device is invisible to the eye, but not to the touch". The implantation method involves local anesthesia along with conscious sedation so you are awake, but not fully aware. There may be some gentle pain associated with this surgery. Study co-author Dr Joel Saper, institutor and director of Michigan Head Pain and Neurological Institute in Ann Arbor, and a associate of the advisory board for the Migraine Research Foundation, said this therapy could be an important option for some colonize with migraines. And "There were numerous patients who did benefit in terms of pain control and quality of life. We don't have any always effective therapies for migraine, so we don't ever expect everyone to have extraordinary results, but for those few that it works in, it's life-changing". But "it is surgical and there are risks to surgery, and there are unknowns such as how extensive the effects will last". Risks of the new neurostimulation procedure may include infection and the machine can sometimes dislodge. Saper has not received any compensation from the device manufacturer. "Occipital nerve stimulation is a curing of great promise for patients with intractable chronic migraine," said Dr Richard B Lipton, kingpin of the Headache Center at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx and a advisers member of the Migraine Research Foundation. He is not affiliated with the new study. "Eliminating a solid week per month of headaches is a huge gain for chronic migraine sufferers and translates into big improvements in care satisfaction and quality of life. This treatment will make a huge character for millions of migraine sufferers with chronic migraine". The results do mirror what Lipton has seen in his practice. "This shows that the remedying can give chronic migraine sufferers their lives back". Dr Robert Duarte, top banana of the Pain Center at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Manhasset, NY, said that the remodelled device should not be considered a first-line treatment for migraine, however. "You lack to be evaluated by a headache specialist, and make sure all treatment options are tried before installing a stimulator, but it is an choice and there is definitely evidence that it works". Duarte is not affiliated with the new study. "It is not a cure, but a healing option that can reduce frequency and intensity of headaches in some people" online consultation for herbal tea. Doctors can also do a trial run using an exotic stimulator to see if it will work before implanting the device.

Hi loves! My latest post is up #ontheblog Jen Finds Gems
New Post has been published on https://www.jenfindsgems.com/twelve12-beaute-review-for-natural-hair/
Twelve12 Beaute Review for Natural Hair
I discovered Twelve12 Beaute on Instagram, when I was searching for a natural hair stylist in my area to slay a silk press. This Black Owned, plant based haircare company is based out of Philly and they have made their stamp on the natural hair industry in a major way.
Their page stopped me in my tracks. Every single photo and video that they posted showed girls with shiny, bouncy hair. GORGEOUS hair that had movement and it looked so healthy! The Laid Pretty Boutique is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania so I knew the chances of me flying out to get my hair straightened were slim but I was happy to see that they made and sold their own line for consumers to use at home. I was beyond excited to try their line on my hair to try my at-home silk presses. Little did I know, I would be singing their praises for getting my curls all the way together too!
Read on for my honest thoughts about the Twelve12 Beaute Shampoo and Conditioner for natural hair.
So Glo Organic Shampoo– 13 oz, $20
The Twelve12 So Glo Organic shampoo contains some of my favorite ingredients for a dry, sensitive scalp such as rosemary and tea tree oil. These ingredients work together with some of the best like Oat protein, Vitamins C, E and B3, B5 and B6 to help cleanse and nourish your scalp and hair. I’m usually weary of clear shampoos because they tend to strip my hair and be very drying, but I was proven wrong. Yes, this shampoo will get your hair squeaky clean– but it did not dry my hair out and it felt great on my scalp. How can you not get into this description:
“Organically handmade to give your hair a new beginning! Our shampoo cleanses your scalp of all impurities while deeply replenishing each hair strand to obtain and maintain healthy hair growth.”
The fragrance is a sweet herbal blend of tea tree and something that I can’t quite name (I thought it was lemongrass) but it smells nice. It’s nice to get a break from the baked goods, heavy perfume or fruity fragrances that are on the market right now.
So Glo Organic Conditioner– 13 oz, $20
This conditioner is the star player, honey! I have never had a conditioner glide through my hair this way. It’s not too rich and it’s not too runny– it has the perfect velvety consistency and it immediately softened my hair once applied. I didn’t need any detangling brushes or styling tools to detangle my hair and I was still able to condition in a quarter of the time it typically takes me.
What I love about this conditioner is that is doubles as a deep conditioner. According to the directions on the bottle, you can allow it to sit on your hair for 5 to 10 minutes with heat to allow it to better penetrate your hair. I’ve only used it as a traditional rinse out conditioner but I will definitely be using it as a treatment for added nourishment!
Here is a shot of my hair freshly washed, without any products applied. My curls were shiny, defined, and super soft!
Check out this clean ingredient list:
No sulfates No parabens No alcohol No synthetic fragrances or artificial colors
Made with 89% organic ingredients!
Conditioner: Enriched with keratin, oat protein & lavender.
Ingredients: * Aloe Barbadensis (aloe) Juice, * Orbygnia oleifera (babassu) oil, behentrimonium (naturally derived from rapeseed) methosulfate, cetearyl alcohol, * Olea Europaea (extra virgin olive) oil, * Prunus Armeniaca (apricot kernel) oil, * glycerin, silk amino acids, hydrolyzed oat protein, Anthemis nobilis (chamomile) extract, glyceryl stearate, sodium stearoyl lactylate, panthenol DL, Vitamin E acetate, rosemary seed extract, vitamin C, vitamin B3, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, propanediol (naturally derived preservative), ethylexyl glycerin (naturally derived preservative), potassium sorbate (food grade preservative), citrus.
*denotes as naturally derived
As no products are perfect (although this duo is pretty close) the only con I found was that the ingredients are not listed on the products. I have a weird habit of reading product labels in the shower or re-reading labels when I am deciding what to use for a wash/styling session. If you too are a frequent label reader, make sure you check out the full ingredients list on their website.
The Truth
I highly recommend this line for natural/curly hair and I’ve added it to my list of favorites for natural hair. This line is especially great for naturals with a sensitive scalp or those looking for clean, lightweight products. Both the shampoo and conditioner also passed my migraine trigger test– they are scented but the fragrance is not overwhelming and it doesn’t linger!
Are you ready for an update after I’ve done an at home silk press with Twelve12 Beaute? Let me know in the comments!

Evidence Is Mounting That The Drug Ketamine Can Actually Treat Chronic Migraines
See on Scoop.it - The future of medicine and health
Tumblr media
When nothing else gives relief.
When you hear about ketamine, you may associate it with being an illegal party drug that causes vivid hallucinations. But it's also a powerful anaesthetic, listed on the World Health Organisation's list of essential medicines. And now it looks like we've found yet another amazing application for it - the treatment of migraines that have no cure. The latest study focussed on 61 patients, all male, who had been suffering chronic migraines that did not respond to any of the treatments available. This type of migraine is known as a refractory headache or intractable migraine. Even though it only affects less than 1 percent of all migraine sufferers, this version tends to be an especially severe form, causing debilitating episodes that last for days at a time or even longer. Using an intravenous ketamine infusion for stubborn migraines is not an entirely new concept, but it's considered to be a "last resort" treatment and is not widely available. It does make sense, though, because research has indicated that ketamine infusions can help with other stubborn pain conditions that don't respond to more conventional treatments. Patients in this study all received ketamine infusions at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, a hospital that not only offers this option to patients, but also works to investigate its clinical benefits. Each of the participants received a 3-7 day course of ketamine infusions at the hospital, and by the end of the treatment almost 75 percent of the patients had less intense migraines than before. Migraine severity is typically rated on a scale of 0-10, and on average the 61 patients had a severity of 7.5. After the ketamine treatment, upon discharge from hospital that average rating dropped down to 3.4. "Our study focused only on short-term relief, but it is encouraging that this treatment might have the potential to help patients long-term," says one of the team, anaesthesiologist Eric Schwenk. It's important to note that so far all evidence for ketamine as an option for stubborn migraines comes from case studies and retrospective studies, rather than clinical trials which can establish a more direct causal link.

Spinraza Update #589
In a little over a week, on August 18th, I will be driving to Philadelphia for my first Spinraza injection! This post is a brief recap of some of the details and considerations surrounding this life-changing event.
-Spinraza is the first-ever FDA-approved treatment for my disease, spinal muscular atrophy.
-SMA causes my muscles to waste away as I get older, leading to the loss of abilities like walking (duh, I never walked), eating, breathing, swallowing, etc., etc., etc. Basically, if a bodily function involves a muscle, SMA affects it.
-Spinraza, which is administered through a spinal injection, is basically fake DNA that tells my body to stop being stupid and start creating the correct proteins for muscle growth and maintenance. It essential stops the progression of my muscle loss, which is more profound than I can currently fathom, and in many recipients, there has even been some reversal of the loss, meaning people are gaining back strength and ability.
-My private insurance approved the drug, which is super expensive (like add a hundred thousand dollars to whatever you're probably imagining), and Biogen is helping to cover the copay, which they're doing for many individuals. I will have to get these injections four times in the first 58 days, then once every four months for the rest of my life, which makes the unstable and fluctuating nature of healthcare scary for me. Fingers crossed I can stay covered and approved ad infinitum.
-The actual injection procedure might be a bit hairy. I have a spinal fusion that was done when I was seven to keep my spine straight, so there's lots of metal and other garbage that might get in the way of the delivery. From what I've heard and read, it's either going to be a long, torturously painful process of digging around for a microscopic entry point, or they'll nail it on the first try and I won't feel a thing. I'm hoping for the latter.
-If, next Friday, we find that the spinal injection is just not possible, there are other options of varying seriousness. I've seen some are getting it injected into their necks, which sounds lovely. I can also have holes drilled in my spine to make room for the needle, but that method requires a surgery, and that opens a whole new can of complication.
-The only potential side effect that worries me are these nasty migraines that some people are experiencing as a result of the spinal-tap-ish delivery method.
-Even with all these scary uncertainties, I'm ecstatic about the possibility of getting stronger, or at least not getting any worse. It still feels surreal, and I'll do my best to bring all of you with me through the good and the bad.
In the meantime, Sarah and I are working hard on booking speeches for the fall, as well as a top-secret project that we'll be announcing next Friday while my spinal cord is being stabbed. Keep an eye out for it!
