"czucie i wiara silniej mówi do mnie niż mędrca szkiełko i oko.
martwe znasz prawdy, nieznane dla ludu, widzisz świat w proszku, w każdej gwiazd iskierce. nie znasz prawd żywych, nie obaczysz cudu! miej serce i patrzaj w serce!"
- "romantyczność" a. mickiewicz
adam mickiewicz is arguably the most important polish poet, who wrote in the romantic period. there's only one real english translation i can find online (by wordpress) but honestly, i think it's a bit of a let-down, so instead of translating it in a way that keeps it in the same poetic format (making changes to keep the rhyming, etc.) i've just done it directly:
"feeling and belief speaks stronger to me than the sage's lense and eye.
you know dead truths, unknown to the people, you see the world in powder, in every spark a star. you do not know living truths, you will not see miracles! have a heart and look within your heart!"
this poem follows a girl who supposedly sees the ghost of her dead lover. wandering through the village in plain daylight, she talks to him, reaches for him, and though the reader never hears (or rather, reads) a response, the girl answers as though engaged in a real conversation. she laments over no one understanding her, even begging for her lover to take her with him. the village people gather around her, but what's interesting is that they actually do believe her. they think that this ghost is real, that what she's seeing and hearing is truly there, but only for her. this poem was written in the early romantic period - an era that diverged from the classical and intellectual beliefs and values of the era that came before it, the enlightenment - and it shows. the englightment focused on things it could measure, on empirical learning - romanticism turned all of that on its head. in this poem, and specifically the fragment i included, the author talks about the importance of the things we believe, the things we feel - that these things mean just as much, if not more, than the things we can test with variables. this point is emphasised with the earlier precense of an old man, who loudly disputes the village's belief in this ghost and the power of the girl who sees it. he says that he cannot see it, therefore it does not exist - he relies solely on his senses, outright dismissing the possibility that there could be something beyond. a. mickiewicz uses this character to represent the old, classical ideas of the englightment era and the people who still supported them - specifically a rival of mickiewicz, jan śniadecki, who vehemently opposed the romantic ideas that people like mickiewicz embraced. i'm not going to dive into beliefs about ghosts and stuff like that, because that's not exactly what i'm interested in. i just think it's very cool how the englightment slowly changed into romanticism and people started placing more value on human emotion, belief, and the ideas that there's much more to the world than solely solid facts. the romantic period was dramatic and full of feeling and i love it. we should live by more than the lense and the eye - we should operate from the heart, and this poem tells us about exactly that.
