How Total Recall Brought a Memorable Villain to Life

It was 30 years ago that TriStar Pictures released Total Recall, a sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ronny Cox, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, and Rachel Ticotin. Based loosely on a story by Philip K. Dick called “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” the movie starred Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid, a construction worker in the year 2084 who begins having strange dreams about a mysterious woman and the Earth colony that exists on Mars.

His wife Lori (Stone) dismisses the dreams, but it turns out they’re not dreams at all but memories: Quaid is actually a secret agent named Hauser who once worked for the governor of the Martian colony (Cox) but has had his memories wiped and replaced with false ones. Lori is not his wife at all, but an operative for the governor and the wife of Richter (Ironside), the governor’s ruthless fixer. With the help of Melina (Ticotin), the woman from his dreams, Hauser/Quaid finds himself caught between a rebellion among the colonists and a conspiracy surrounding the existence of an alien artifact found on Mars.

Verhoeven, fresh off the success of his wildly violent and satirical RoboCop, amped up the violence and action in Total Recall while also rolling out a slew of visual effects that helped turn the movie into one of the most memorable of the early 1990s. The movie also provided a showcase for Schwarzenegger to play a more vulnerable character, while Ironside — who had first gained notice as a villain in David Cronenberg’s Scanners nine years earlier — delivered a vivid turn as the relentless and aggrieved Richter.

With a 4K remaster of the film freshly issued on Blu-ray in the U.K. (in a snazzy box set) and the U.S., Den of Geek had the chance to speak about Total Recall with the Canadian-born Ironside, whose other fan-favorite film appearances (often as the toughest of tough guys) include roles in Starship Troopers, Top Gun, Highlander II: The Quickening, The Perfect Storm, and hundreds more.

Den of Geek: How did you get involved with Total Recall?

Michael Ironside: I had met Paul Verhoeven for RoboCop, to play RoboCop. It was between Peter Weller and me. We’d had a couple of conversations and meetings, and Rob Bottin, who had done special effects for RoboCop, and later for Total Recall, he came in and said, “Look, if I create a suit for Michael it’s going to look like a Sherman tank.” Peter was much slighter than I was, so that was the deciding factor.

Paul offered me the part of that kind of psychotic character that’s full of drugs and everything on RoboCop. I was in the middle of shooting a film called Extreme Prejudice with Nick Nolte and Maria Conchita Alonso and Powers Boothe. I just finished a death sequence, and I went and met Paul at lunch and when he offered it to me I said, “Thank you and good luck with the film, but I don’t think I can play another psychopath right now.” And Paul said, “Would you consider it?” And I said, “No, I don’t think I can”…And I remember thinking, what an idiot, why aren’t you on this film? Because I was a huge fan of Paul’s from his European films like Spetters.

I’m in the middle of processing this stuff and I said, “Please accept my apology and all the best with the film, blah, blah, blah.” And because of turning down that and another film I turned down at the time, because I didn’t want to play a rapist, the word got out that I was difficult to work with, and I’m anything but difficult to work with. So I met with Paul for Total Recall and they said, “We’re not offering you the part. Are you willing to audition?” I said, “Absolutely.”

There were a lot of writers on Total Recall, and the script went through a lot of changes. How much of that were you there for?

Paul has never shied away from technology and trying new things…There were massive production details and stuff on Total Recall. The script wasn’t as much a concern for me as the innovations we were dealing with. You know what I mean? We were dealing with computerized sleds. The cameras were on computerized sleds so that you would do a sequence where it comes in and then you’d step in and do another side of it where they would match so they could overlap the shots and put you in things.

So for me the struggle on that film was trying to keep a sense of organic authenticity where you’re dealing with a lot of technology. The script changing has never been a big deal. I get a sense of what we’re doing when I read the script, I know myself and then I concentrate on a daily basis of what we’re doing on any given sequence. So the actual continuity of the story and stuff was not as important as concentrating on being real in every given moment, and trusting the story. My job is to show up, support the director and support his or hers storytelling. When you get somebody who’s deft and in control as Paul is it’s easy to do.

If I didn’t have a good time I wouldn’t do it. I just love working with Paul. I love that crew. It was a joy to go to work. Every day you felt like you were learning something.

Do you remember your first scene on the movie?

My very first shot on the film was kissing Sharon Stone. My very first scene was where I come in her apartment after she’s had that whole fight sequence and I grab her and kiss her. My wife was with me. It was my very first scene. It was Friday night, we got all the stuff set up and then when I got there and I said, “What’s the first scene up?” Paul said, “The apartment scene with Sharon.” And I went, “Thank you. You couldn’t have me just run across the street and shoot somebody?” I told my wife, “I’ve got to do the kissing scene and I’m not sure how to do it.” And Karen said, “Well, ask for her help.”

Karen said, “I’ll come just to make it feel safer for you.” So she was standing off camera and I walked up to Sharon. I said, “I’ve never really done something like that.” And she cut me right off and said, “You mean the kissing and stuff like that?” And I said, “Yeah.” And she goes, “Don’t worry.” She looked right at my wife and she says, “I’ll look after this.” And she actually did. I walked in, I grabbed her around the waist and she grabbed me. It was the right tone — the scene had that kind of cold blooded, sociopathic tone to it. And I felt safe. From that moment on I felt safe.

Richter isn’t this one-dimensional villain. If you look at it from his perspective he was just a guy whose wife’s job has been pretending to love another guy.

I have a tendency to want to protect my characters, because I make them as human as possible. I’m not trying to look good up there. I’m not trying to protect Michael Ironside. I’m trying to create a character. Richter was a very specific type of personality. He’s the Doberman for somebody who’s an authority figure, who has a very set male way of looking at things, and probably not a three-dimensional or four-dimensional way of looking at things, probably two-dimensional: “I’m good. I’m in power, you’re not.” That’s a safety net. It’s not vindictive.

I don’t want to get into all of the meditative stuff here, but there’s only one real basic driving force in the universe and that’s love. Anything other than that is an attempt to get back to it, whether it’s fear, anger, whether people know it or not. That’s the way I look at my characters. They’re basically damaged in some way, but they’re humans. I try to make them as human and as organically correct as possible.

How was it working with Arnold? I understand that he actually did you a great kindness during that shoot and helped with your sister, who was ill.

Well, absolutely. Arnold and I are still friends…Arnold is a very, very smart man, very clever and not clever in a negative way, clever in his way of constantly having to deal with being treated like a caricature or taken for granted, I might say, over the years. My sister had had an operation. She got peritonitis and she had an abdominal infection and stuff up in Canada. And I know it’s hard for people to believe, but this is pre-internet, pre-cell phones when that film was made.

He had a telephone hookup in his trailer, and he said, “I heard your sister is sick.” I’m the oldest of five kids. I have 93 first cousins. We’re a very tight knit pack. Wendy, my sister, she’s the second oldest, she’s my best pal in my whole life. She’s three years younger than me. So he said, “Come, come, come.” We went to his trailer and he said, “We’ll call her.” I said, “What do you mean?” And I was totally oblivious to money and power and stuff. He had a phone set up and we called the hospital where she was at.

I said, “Hey, Wendy, I got somebody here, one of my co-stars here, he wants to talk to you.” And he goes, “Hello Wendy. You’ve got to get…” He listed all these things that could help her. It was touch and go there for a while because of her blood count, the whole thing was down. And we talked for about half an hour. We were having lunch and stuff in his trailer. I got all emotional. I thanked him so much because he didn’t have to fucking do that. He didn’t have to do that. He was very sincere.

I found out afterwards that he called Wendy about every three days. “How’re you doing? Are you keeping yourself fit? Are you doing this, or doing that?” People aren’t what they say, they are what they do. And what Arnold has done over the years, he’s a good man. He’s a good guy. That was his thing.

What else do you remember about shooting the movie?

When I did that fight scene with him on the elevator I had just had my sternum broken. They shut the whole film down. There’s a scene where we come running out and my backup, I can’t remember his name now for some reason, we came running up and as I turned around, he runs in there and he goes, “No, no, no. Don’t shoot! You’ll blow the biosphere,” or something like that. When he ran up, he hit me right in the chest with this Uzi he had and it cracked my sternum and popped two of my ribs out. We only got one take of that and they had to shut the film down after that day was over because I was in pretty much everything they were shooting.

After about three weeks, I get a call saying, “How are you feeling?” I said, “I’m feeling pretty good.” The producer said, “There’s a problem…We’ve got to start up again, but the insurance company won’t allow you back on set unless you can do 50 push-ups.” I went to Beverly Hills to meet the insurance guys at the doctor’s office, and the doctor says, “I got to tell you right up front, when you do this it’s going to re-injure you.” So the insurance guys came in, I got down and I got to about 20 push-ups and I felt it go. The rib come out. It’s kind of like a snap. I started to turn pale, I think, because somewhere around 25, 30 push-ups, the doctor said, “Yeah, yeah, yeah. That’s good enough.”

What happened after that?

I get back and the first thing up was the elevator fight sequence. Paul said, “The very first things you’ve got to do, it’s on a smaller set. It’s not the big sets. You’ve got to do this fight scene with Arnold in this elevator.” And I couldn’t even lift my left arm at that time.

The doctor called up somebody and about an hour later Jim Plunkett walked in. If you don’t know who Jim Plunkett was, he was a quarterback for the Oakland Raiders and I think he won the Super Bowl with the Raiders. The doctor had designed a flat apparatus for Plunkett when he had broken three or four ribs and had to play. You couldn’t take huge, deep breaths, but it kept the sternum and the ribs in place.

I tried it on and he fitted it for me and I went back to Mexico and we did that fight scene with Arnold, and Arnold knew that I was in trouble. But we did that fight scene. We shot all day, a huge fight scene. Most of it was us. He tapped me once, only once. That’s how professional he was and how well that was choreographed.

David Cronenberg, who directed you in your breakout role in Scanners, was attached to direct Total Recall for a while. How do you think it might have been different had he done the film?

When I did Scanners, I was only hired to do the black and white flashback sequence. That’s all I was ever hired for on Scanners. And he said, “I’m thinking of rearranging the script a little and bringing you in more.” So when I was on Scanners I literally got scenes sometimes the night before, sometimes two days before, because he was rewriting the script as we went.

I think the difference would have been that Paul has a tendency to be very socio-political. He’s not as interested in the organics of a character. His storytelling, I’ve noticed, is really about social political comment, the big picture. I think David, on the other hand, deals more with the paranoia, the interior conflicts, the emotional desperation of a character. He deals with things on a much more intellectual, emotional level on the inside where Paul is dealing with the intellectual man in the universe, man in society, society versus man. David is more about man versus himself, man versus his belief systems, man versus religion — what motivates people and what leaves the footprints emotionally on them.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

December 11: Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

The last of the trilogy. When it came out in 2005, hopes were high that it would redeem the trilogy from the mediocrity of the first two. The most impressive thing about those was the elaborateness and ingenuity of the CGI effects. They were so advanced at the time, but by 2005 we'd already had the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which combined breathtaking visuals with actually likable characters in a story that had stood the test of time. So this movie needed to make a mark somehow. My recollection is that it did, but I haven't seen it in a while. And…. Go.

The crawl starts: "War!" Which seems like a cheerleader is trying to amp us up. Then it talks about a droid army we've never heard of, and maybe that will be cool. It's odd how the whole anti-Republic gang consists of groups like "The Trade Federation" and "The Droid Army". Not traditional, like, "countries".

Opening shot is a doozy! A long shot tracking two fighter ships around a super busy, colorful battlefield in space.

"This is where the fun begins". Yeah, George Lucas is having his fan service fun at least.

It's weird how the clones are the good guys here, even though the OG clone was unambiguously bad in the last movie. But it only takes a second to remember why it makes sense.

"Buzz droids" crawl all over the fighter ships and do annoying things, that's the kind of fun idea that has always been a reliable hallmark of all these movies.

Super fun to watch Anakin and Obi-Wan hop out of their ships and immediately start fighting.

General Grievous! An evil droid with a physical deformity and a bad cough! I find this wholly acceptable.

This movie is just getting the whole overall tone right very quickly.

Ha, R2 used his jet flame things to cook the dumb bad droids!

Only 12 minutes in and we've got a fun light saber fight. Count Dooku is kind of irresponsible keeping that cape on with all these flailing laser swords.

Only 14 minutes in and Palpatine is all growling "do it!" and Anakin beheads an unarmed dude. Yup, dark!

The whole "Palpatine is seducing Anakin to the dark side" is really overt here. And really, why wouldn't it be?

The battle rages on, though, and there are neat cannon things, and don't forget that General Grievous is still around!

0:28:45 - Darth Sidious and General Grievous are colluding, but the movies have not yet acknowledged what seems obvious, which is that Sidious is Palpatine. Which makes us wonder why he's pals with the droid boss that was recently his kidnapper.

Dumb romance exchange, then a bad Anakin dream like the one he had in the last movie. Striking contrast, the look of the dream. Then more soap opera romance scenes. I miss the exciting parts. Hurry back to those, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith!

0:35:50 - More real purty establishing shots of Coruscant!

A couple of the people on the Jedi Council are holograms. It's nice that they offer the option of working remotely.

0:42:50 - I fuckin' LOVE this. A shot of lively Coruscant at night, and people are attending a swanky performance in a finely appointed auditorium. Anakin and Palpatine chat during it, but it's some kind of surreal anti-gravity acrobatic show, where the audience offers polite applause at calculated times. You never get a good look at the show. So odd!

But even more impressive, this is when Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine starts to do the most interesting, subtle, effective acting in maybe the entire line of Star Wars features. He's being so seductive. He's saying things that connect to Anakin. It's working, but I bet on paper you couldn't tell it would be THIS effective. This is comparable to how you would stage a story of a real-life cult leader convincing a follower to do crazy shit. "Not from a Jedi."

And then, yay, we're suddenly in a new battle on the Wookiee planet! It's cool! Oh, but it ended quickly and went back to Jedi/Senate politics drama.

I haven't noted this before, but I love the ship design where you dock your little one-seater onto a ring of engines to go to another planet. Please make the car equivalent of that, modern-Earth. And don't just point me to a ferryboat.

Obi-Wan is back to getting his spy game on! He's on a new planet, which is always fun, and he made a clear decision to pretend to leave, but secretly stay on the planet and ride around on a giant pretty-feathered reptile. Fun.

Then he just goes for it and jumps right into the middle of an army all by himself! That's some James Bond cockiness right there. General Grievous even turns himself into a four-sword beast and Obi-Wan is like "cool".

I guess he knew all these stormtroopers were about to show up.

1:03:27 - Here we go, ID is starting to chew scenery. That voice. He affects this deep, expressive growly whisper. "It gives you FOCUS. Makes you STRONGER." Why didn't George Lucas let any of his other actors go to town like this? Suddenly some good acting and it's very refreshing.

But hey, we're back to the battle on whatever this planet is, and Obi-Wan and Grievous are fighting. I love Grievous's wheel-ride! Obi-Wan noticed that Grievous has a heart-y organ in the middle and realized that if he shoots him RIGHT THERE, he'll just die. Video game logic.

Scene where A&A silently think about each other at each other across the city from each other, it works, and it has some unusually atmospheric music.

"I AM THE SENATE!" More sweet vocal production from ID, and he gets his sith light saber dueling on! "NO! NO! YOU WILL DIE!!!" Super awesome. And then just when you thought it was all in his voice, he does a kickass facial expression when he kills Mace Windu. I am delighted by Ian McDiarmid.

"Henceforth you shall be known as… Darth… Vader." I think I hurt my eyes from rolling them too hard.

1:19:30 - Cool shot of a battalion of sith assholes marching toward probably a bunch of good guys they're going to kill, against the backdrop of the city at night.

Now lots of bummer stuff is going on, and they're making sure it's all done in pretty places. The places are pretty and varied. And it's just the clone army dudes who had an order issued to kill good guys so they just do it. Except that Yoda is onto them. It is pretty intense though.

But the most intense part is where newly christened Lord Vader goes to kill the kids. And they're cute kids but he is definitely about to slice up every single child.

This is where, if this movie were a standalone story, we'd be approaching the part where there's a glimmer of hope that will lead to the course of events that resolves the conflict and happy-ends the movie. But this is where this trilogy's unique ambition has to work without doing that.

So here's where Anakin goes and talks to Amidala after committing atrocities. He doesn't mention his atrocities. Just lots of stuff about "loyalty to the Chancellor". We getcha GL. Message received. I honestly have to wonder if our 21st century workaday fascists see this as a happy ending.

1:35:45 - Lord Vader has evil red eyes now. Just because it looks cool I guess.

Anakin is killing Droid Army and Trade Federation people now. Total racist.

Badass climactic duel starts up with Anakin and Obi-Wan! Should be fun…

…but it cuts to Yoda barging into Palpatine's office kind of funny-rudely. And now they're dueling. Cool! Also worth observing that the CGI Yoda is super well integrated in the scene with Palpatine. You don't think about that at all.

And I'm glad those two are now fighting in the senate chamber because that's one of my all time favorite Star Wars chambers.

Anakin and Obi-Wan's fight takes place on, well, they're on a lava planet with lava rivers and spires and it's like part of the fight is they get points for picking the most dramatic place to fight.

Anakin burning in agony on a lava river embankment is pretty horrific. And yet he's going to make it out of there? Ouch. I guess if he weren't Sith Jesus, when they found him like that they'd probably just be like "oh he dead, k bai". But his elite status means they have to try weird things to make him still be alive.

Robot doctor delivers the news that pregnant Amidala is dying for no reason other than "she's lost the will to live". Sounds like a romantic tragic plot from the fantasies of a jilted fifth grader.

2:08:55 - Vader goes "Nooooooo!" when he hears that Amidala is dead. We're supposed to hipster-hate that, right?

Mostly it kind of seems like we're just tidying everything up so that it connects to "Episode IV". This isn't that terrible a thing. It lets this trilogy end with a rehash of the "Binary Sunset" music and imagery. But this time with Owen Lars. And his GIRLFRIEND, Beru.

That's it. I think Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith is a lot harder to pick on than the other two movies in the trilogy. It ends up quickly getting to a point where we know the rest and have to sit there while the movie spells it out for us, but that's a lot better than the biggest sins of this trilogy.

25 Things We Learned from the ‘Kong: Skull Island’ Commentary

“This whole movie is basically just my huge, expensive infomercial for why people should go visit Vietnam.”

Warner Bros.’ giant monsterverse is two films in so far, and the visible improvement from Godzilla to Kong: Skull Island bodes well for whatever comes next. The latter film understands that the big draw here are the big monsters, and it delivers an abundance of big monster action. The film was recently released on Blu-ray/DVD, and in addition to numerous featurettes and deleted scenes the supplements include a director’s commentary.

Commentator: Jordan Vogt-Roberts (director)

1. The opening title sequence featuring WB and Legendary logos was originally meant to feature “throwbacks to 70s vector-based and illustrated company logos,” but not only could they not get them right but the companies were also “very protective of their logos.”

2. The American pilot falling out of the sun is meant to suggest Icarus, a world of myths, and the loss of mankind’s connection to them.

3. The opening on the beach is tonally inspired by the likes of The Good the Bad the Weird, and he adds that “I love the idea of this crazy David Lean movie.”

4. The title credits are done by Kyle Cooper who also did David Fincher’s Seven.

5. The image that Bill Randa (John Goodman) hands Senator Willis (Richard Jenkins) was originally of Godzilla, but he fought against that as he felt the film needed to be about Kong from the beginning.

Final Thoughts

As flawed as the script may be there’s no denying the appeal of the imagery throughout Kong: Skull Island. It’s a visually exciting movie, and Vogt-Roberts splits his enthusiasm evenly between what we’re seeing onscreen and the people involved. He loves his cast and crew, and he’s complimentary towards them all — with the exception of Samuel L. Jackson whom he only mentions briefly a couple times before his character dies. He’s also not shy about sharing his pop culture interests from video games to anime to Asian cinema, and if you take nothing else from his numerous references know this… he *loves* Evangelion. It’s a solid track with minimal silence, and he shares a lot of information regarding the production choices making for an interesting and engaging listen.

Tall as a mountain with a beating heart that burns as bright as the sun, enabling us all to become the most heroic versions of ourselves.”

Critical Commentary:

How times change, after the release of “Pacific Rim” (2013) a Guillermo del Toro directed piece of science fiction that wanted to straddle the worlds of Wells and Lovecraft, that featured some of the hottest up and coming stars of that year in Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba as well as some fine characters actors in Ron Pearlman, Max Martini, Clifton Collins Jr., Burn Gorman and Charlie Day, it seemed the stories of Kaiju’s and Jaeger would never have another outing. With an outsized budget of US$200 million dollars and a really rather middling box office of US$411 million (most coming from International markets) there was little appetite for a sequel. Come 2018 with the more expensive actors as well as production people replaced by what really are B and C actors we now have a sequel in “Pacific Rim: Uprising” (2018), with a budget far less at US$150 million (even less when factoring in inflation) this has not been the hit that the studio (Legendary /Universal) or the producers had hoped for. With all the best intentions in the world, no matter how much story or plot that is attempted this potential franchise is still built around monsters fighting giant machines, which is of course its greatest strength, but also remains its greatest weakness, as does the unbelievable amount of collateral damage that is caused in every single action set piece of which there are more than a few, maybe too many as it transpires.

This sequel co-written and directed by Steven S. DeKnight who is possibly best known as a genre television writer has never been at the helm of a movie either as writer or director – for most of “Pacific Rim: Uprising” he makes a decent enough fist of it, although I do question handing the reigns of such a large budget to someone with very little actual experience. Where the lack of ideas as well as originality does show is in the general story and action that appears onscreen as well as the plot reasons as to why there is even a need for this sequel, when the original itself was not only uninspiring but very middle of the road with no real genre flourishes or originality beyond the fact that there were giant machines fighting giant monsters. I have pointed out continuously that just because there is a great idea for a movie, and don’t get me wrong the general conceit behind both ‘Pacific Rim’ movies is very good, it is the small details that make that good idea into a great film. Unfortunately, there is just too much of a plot to fit comfortably into the modest running time and budget. What is amusing is that it is the exact opposite problem that the first movie had, not enough plot, too much confusing fighting and issues with the world building as well as clearly defining not only the antagonists but too little seen of them and their location.

“Pacific Rim: Uprising” is set ten years after the Battle of the Breach, former Jaeger pilot Jake Pentecost – son of deceased Kaiju War hero Stacker Pentecost – makes a living by stealing and selling Jaeger parts on the black market. After he tracks part of a disabled Jaeger’s power core to the secret workshop of fifteen year old Jaeger enthusiast Amara Namani, both are arrested and are given a choice between the prison or return to PPDC as an instructor with Amara as his recruit.

Upon arriving at a Shatterdome in China, Jake starts training Jaeger program cadets with his estranged former co-pilot Nate Lambert. Nate and Mako reveal to him that the Jaeger program is threatened by Shao Corporation’s drone program. Mako is due to deliver a final assessment to determine the authorization of the drones at a PPDC council meeting in Sydney, but is killed by rogue Jaeger Obsidian Fury before she can report. Her death prompts the PPDC council to authorize the drone program and order their immediate deployment. Upon destroying its reactor, they find that Obsidian Fury was controlled by a Kaiju’s secondary brain, which testing shows was grown on Earth.

What is the stand out element for me, in fact for pretty much the entire movie is the casting (as well as co-producer) of John Boyega who proves he is going to be a big star of the future outside his ‘Star Wars’ appearances, which is no mean feat, as type casting is not just a thing of the past. Here Boyega has to live up to the memory of not only his characters father but the fact that his father was portrayed by the fantastic Idris Elba who maintains a presence in all the movies he has appeared in. Boyega in this movie is equally charming as well as being caddish, a boy growing into a man, even while he is teaching others far younger than himself. Therein lies one of the problems with the movie, which is the fact that this movie relies far too much on younger actors as well as the miscast Scott Eastwood who while he has pedigree (his father is Clint Eastwood) is not a great actor at all – the only saving grace is that his father matured with age as an actor so there is hope for him yet. The two actors that seem to know what movie they are in as well as stealing the show are the holdouts from the previous instalment in Charlie Day and Burn Gorman who are at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of performance but complement each other exceptionally well. As for the rest of the cast they are mostly unknowns who serve a purpose but are really just filling to the massive CGI fights that take place for a majority of the running time.

Of course the real stars of this movie are the Jaeger’s and to a lesser extent the rival Kaiju’s who are all CGI creations. Carrying on from the previous movie the world has already been built and it is obvious to see that the bulk of the budget has gone on rendering these giants of destruction. My only real criticism is that the actual world that these giants operate in is pretty drab, faceless and lifeless. It seems like the flaws of movies like “Man of Steel” (2013) and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016) have been ignored here, as we are witness to hundreds of buildings in multiple cities being destroyed with little time being spent on the human cost or even the social cost which is a major mistake on the filmmakers part – surely audiences are beyond this, perhaps this is a reason why the movie is bland as well as fairly unsuccessful at the box office.

One of the aspects of the movie that is unforgiveable, something Marvel movies learnt after “Iron Man 2” (2010) is the setting up of sequels before the first or second movies are good enough or successful enough to earn these on their own. So we see in the closing moments of the movie a blatant attempt to set up another ‘Pacific Rim’ instalment which is ludicrous as this one was never going to be able to spawn one with these filmmakers attached. This, coupled with a rather too expansive plot means that this movie at times is a hard watch as it really does bite off more than it can chew in terms of establishing brand new characters as well as new versions of antagonists from the previous movie, again while dangling even more story for a sequel.

The question in my mind is simply should this be viewed in cinemas and I would say that “Pacific Rim: Uprising” is worth a watch but maybe at home on Blu-ray or a streaming service. This is a movie that in the ‘old days’ would have been a direct to video release at best, which would have been a nice surprise especially with the edition of John Boyega. So wait and watch at home, you will enjoy much more.

Universal brings “Pacific Rim: Uprising” to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as a two-disc combo pack with a flyer code for a Digital Copy. The triple-layered UHD100 disc sits comfortably opposite a Region Free, BD50 disc inside a black, eco-vortex case with a glossy slipcover. At startup, the disc goes straight to a menu screen with an image of the cover art and music playing in the background.

The Video:

There is no doubt that the picture is alive with the range of colors available when viewing this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, it has a with a lavish HEVC H.265 encode that never seems to shortchange the movie.

As soon as the movie begins it is easy to identify within the picture the rich greens, electrifying blues, and splendid full-bodied reds, which complement the over the top visuals, giving it just the right feel for the story it is telling. The Jaegers all look amazing on a large screen TV, they shine and shimmer never losing their majestic awe that should be standard when watching Sci-Fi life this. What I love to witness though are the backgrounds that shine as clear as anything else, the skyscrapers, water, signs and of course the Kaiju themselves. Most impressive has to be the actual breach where viewers can be bewitched by the ecstatic mix of blistering yellow, fiery orange, vibrant crimson and flaming magenta.

The 4K presentation also comes with perfect contrast that’s consistent and well-balanced while also delivering intensely hot, radiant whites, from the super-hygienically clean suits of Liwen Shao and the bright sterile labs to the luminously brilliant glow of various light sources and the soft, fluffy clouds.

Brightness levels are rich and luxurious with blacks that reveal superb gradational variances between the numerous shades, nicely separating the gear and straps from the rest of the uniforms. Silky, midnight shadows penetrate deep into the screen without hampering the finer aspects of the background, providing the 2.39:1 image with a stunning, cinematic appeal and three-dimensional quality. Shot exclusively on the Arri Alexa camera system with a max 3.4K resolution, the freshly-minted transfer, upscaled from a 2K digital intermediate, arrives in the nick of time with razor-sharp definition in every scene.
