Ouroboros: Starbug flies into a Dimensional Tear and the crew meet themselves from an alternate reality where Lister is a hologram and Kochanski is alive. When a GELF ship opens fire on Starbug, alternate Kochanski becomes stranded with no way home.

Duct Soup (s7e4): Kryten thinks Lister likes Kochanski better than him and is making a fuss about it. When the primary power goes off and they all get stuck in a room they have no choice but to climb into the ventilation ducts and try to escape. While inside the ducts they discover Lister is claustrophobic.

Krysis

After an excellent start with Kryten-centric episodes, the later BBC era rather fell down in this department (to put it mildly).  Which is why it’s so refreshing that this episode came along to help restore their reputation.

We open with another cute bunkroom scene.  It’s a shame this line is rendered inconsequential by the cutting of the moment where Butler heals Lister but apparently it was considered too similar to Legion removing his appendix in his eponymous episode and I can see that.  There are already significant echoes of that episode in “Krysis”.

Then it turns into an ensemble scene as Kryten’s midlife crisis becomes apparent and Cat makes a great entrance here with “Are you talking about me?”  His pink suit is spectacular too.

Other things I like:

- The genuine concern of the Boyz (well, Lister and Cat a little by implication) for Kryten.

- Rimmer’s blatant jealousy when Kryten wakes Lister with breakfast (we think at first).  “Is there anything you DON’T do for him?”  Well, you should know, Rimsy.

- Kryten’s flashy new red shell.

- Meeting Butler.  He just exudes smugness, but deniably so.  Poor Kryten.

- Lister’s dirty look at Rimmer when he suggests adding Butler to the crew and effectively demoting Kryten.  Listy is loyal.

- The appearance of the GELFs and things just getting more and more embarrassing for Kryten.

- Lister’s admission that he had a mid-life crisis of his own a few years ago.  Yes, Listy, it was called “Back To Earth” and Series X and lasted a lot longer than you think.

- Meeting the Universe.

- Lister taking the phone in a “Let me handle this” way and Rimmer letting him in a classic long-suffering spouse way.  I defy anyone to watch it and argue with me. :p

- Kryten having his epiphany and helping both himself and the Universe to feel better.

- The general “found family” and affectionate vibe of this whole episode.  It’s heartwarming.

- And it also has a proper, satisfying ending.  Thumbs up from me. :)

Krysis

This episode had so many great moments. When The Cat was rocking out to Kryten’s new speakers, Kryten not being able to say the Gelf word right, Lister’s five minute mid-life crisis compared to The Cat’s complete lack of regret, and Kryten’s touching monologue about life.

I like that Rimmer no longer seems like the only complex character...these recent seasons seem to flesh out the rest of the crew a bit more.

Krysis: When Kryten has a mid-life crisis the crew tries to show him how much he has achieved.

Stasis Leak: Rimmer, Lister and Cat find a time barrier called "Stasis Leak" on Floor 16 and it takes them back in time on Red Dwarf 3 million years earlier. Rimmer and Lister try to change the past, which puts either Rimmer or Kochanski into suspended animation so one of them doesn't die in the radioactive disaster.

Dimension Jump: Rimmer catches the crew going on a fishing trip without him, forcing them to reluctantly bring him along. However, Starbug collides with the ship of Ace Rimmer, a more popular and successful version of Rimmer from an alternate universe.

Lister’s Abandonment Issues

I’m currently collaborating on a fic with @allsortsofsmeg and without being too spoilery, the subject of Lister’s troubled childhood and adolescence came up.  We agreed that his loss of several people early in his life might well lead to a desire for a “found family” which of course he has in the shape of the other Boyz.

I’m going to try hard to avoid woobifying Lister here because he’s my favourite character.  I’m definitely not saying that his childhood excuses any and all bad behaviour as an adult, just as it doesn’t in Rimmer’s case.  But it can help to explain it and as a fic writer and fan that obviously interests me.

So, Lister was abandoned under a pool table as a baby and didn’t find out the reason for that until he was 28 (going by his opening monologue in “Tikka To Ride”).  We don’t know when he was told that he was adopted, but his adoptive father died when he was six and some time after that, his adoptive mother either died or was no longer able or willing to care for him.  

He lived with his Gran until she was killed in an accident when he was 13 and according to “Duct Soup”, he was then taken into care.  We know that he was bullied about his weight - i.e. nicknamed Fat Boy - but how seriously isn’t indicated.  However, his Gran’s death spurred him to lose weight and presumably (hopefully?) that got the bullies off his back.

When “Red Dwarf” the TV show begins, he loses his entire species. (!)  He takes it incredibly well in the show but in “Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers”, he reacts more as a human being would be expected to, spiralling into depression and drunkenness.

He settles well into his new circumstances, but offscreen gives birth to Jim and Bexley and is forced to give them up after three days.  His depression and decision to change the course of his existence in “Timeslides” is more than understandable to me in the light of this, albeit selfish with regard to the others.

Then in “Back To Earth”, we find out at the same time as he does that alternate universe Kochanski left because of his depression and drunkenness.  In Series X he’s clearly not over this and although he’s better in XI we still get his casual reference in “Krysis” to getting over his mid-life crisis in a matter of minutes, which is obviously false to anyone who’s been watching closely.

I know RD is a comedy show and not everything is intended to be taken totally seriously, but the end of “Back To Earth” alone is proof that Doug doesn’t just write everything to get a laugh and it’s perfectly legitimate to analyse the show.
