Nissan will Upgrade its UK Plant to Produce the New Leaf
Source: Gasgoo
Nissan is currently preparing to upgrade its UK plant before it begins trial production of the next generation Leaf electric car, which is expected to go on sale next year.
The body style of the new Leaf will change from a hatchback to a crossover, and Nissan wants to increase the share of electric vehicles sold in Europe to 43 percent by 2026 and 100 percent by 2030.
Nissan will invest £423m ($545m) to upgrade its plant in Sunderland, England, with the aim of producing up to 100,000 of the new Leaf a year. Production of the previous generation Leaf has fallen well short of Nissan’s new targets, and production of the previous generation model was halted at the Sunderland plant in February.

Nissan plans to install new transport equipment on one of two assembly lines at the Sunderland plant as part of its investment in the new Leaf. In addition to the new Leaf, Nissan will also build the Juke small SUV and the Qashqai compact SUV on the assembly line. The plant’s other main assembly line produces only the Qashqai, Nissan’s best-selling model in Europe.
Guy Reid, general head of engineering at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, told the media during a tour of the plant last month that its assembly line needed new haulage units to handle the extra weight. Reid revealed that the new Leaf will begin trial production in August this year, and full production next year.
Upgrades to the assembly line include an extension of the conveyor belt system to mount the battery pack to the Leaf. The 26 bolts used to attach the battery pack to the body will be connected by the robot. On the old Leaf, that job was done manually.
Other upgrades at the plant include a revamp of the body shop to support the new CMF-EV platform, which will soon be used by the new Leaf.
In addition, Nissan plans to launch an electric vehicle based on the Renault 5 to replace the Micra small car as part of a partnership between Nissan and Renault.
Nissan has said it will launch six electric vehicles in Europe by the end of fiscal 2026, ending March 31, 2027, with the Leaf, Juke, Qazqai and Micra among them.
Nissan also said it will introduce the third-generation e-Power hybrid system on Qashqai models, but the company will not bring plug-in hybrids to Europe

Catching Up With Nissan South Africa
The head of Nissan SA speaks about African strategies, new product line-ups and other innovations
Nissan, the Japanese brand founded 89 years ago, can get playful while maintaining its membership in the top 20 global automotive brands.
Seemingly this is prevalent in eastern brands as some of its peers are into humanoid robots, some into boats and motorcycles, while Nissan also dabbles with offbeat inventions such as bedroom slippers that autonomously park themselves under your bed.
This is the offshoot tech the company uses to research and refine vehicle-bound features, such as sharpening the self-parking of cars in the autonomous future. We reflected on some of these unorthodox technologies, including Shwii by Nissan during an interview with Kabelo Rabotho, of Nissan SA.
Shwii is an innovative collaboration between Nissan SA and satellite navigation app Waze to enable Nissan product owners to communicate with their cars using local languages such as isiZulu to navigate everywhere.
Rabotho ascended to the top spot of the local subsidiary when Nissan reorganised its SA operations under one region with Egypt, succeeding Mike Whitfield who has been with the brand since 1989 and now heads the Africa Regional business unit.
The incumbent MD, or Country Manager as preferred by the company, joined the company in 2016 as MD of marketing. His competencies were crafted through more than 25 years of local automotive industry experience, which included management stints at BMW and Toyota SA. He has been in product and brand management, sales and fleet management sales.
He says Nissan SA's targets for the next five years include achieving full plant capacity but with the economy’s downturn and effects of the recent coronavirus pandemic, vehicle sales have been struggling for all OEMs and Rabotho’s company sold 2,625 passenger models in July 2022.
The NP200 half-tonne LCV remains the company’s best-seller with 1,213 units sold in the same month 561 of the new Navara one-tonner were sold locally and 479 were imported last month. The R3bn investment for the manufacture of the Navara has so far led to about 7,000 units finding homes in SA and about 3,500 to export markets.
One of Rabotho’s many priorities is to ensure success for the company’s continental ambitions for the Navara through the 2018 establishment of the Nissan Navara assembly plant in Tema, Ghana. The Nissan plant in Tshwane provides semi-knock-down Navaras to the new plant in Tema in a new Ghana Automotive Development Policy. This includes satisfying the more than 45 African countries Nissan SA already supplies vehicles to in its bid to become the light commercial vehicle hub for the African market.
Still on products, we asked him about the thinking behind the discontinuation of the electric Leaf, an unusual decision given the global move to electric vehicles (EVs). Rabotho says the introduction of the Leaf back in November 2013 was pioneering but was part of ongoing research the company does. The strategy is to gear up to introduce e-POWER, a bridge to full electrification which the company feels is more suited to the needs of the SA market as it takes away the immediate need for infrastructure and addresses range anxiety issues.
The plan is to kick off with e-POWER before introducing the latest generation of electric vehicles, and it will start with the e-POWER Qashqai within the next 12 months and ramp up with more models within the next 24 months, which could see the introduction of the Ariya, the company’s new full-electric SUV and the Nissan Micra EV, both not yet confirmed at this stage. The new third-generation Nissan Qashqai is expected in SA within the next few weeks.
Commenting on women’s month, he says his company has set employment equity targets to be reached by 2025, prioritising the recruitment and empowerment of women at all levels, with a focus on the inclusion of women of colour. These targets include an increase in female representation at the top management or executive level to 25% and an increase in overall female representation at both senior and middle management levels.

4 reasons why electric cars haven’t taken off yet
Tumblr media
Too expensive
Price is an obvious reason for hesitancy. Up to now, electric cars have been more expensive than petrol or diesel vehicles. Advocates argue, however, that electric cars are cheaper in the long run due to lower fuel, servicing and maintenance costs.
Data compiled by comparison website comparethemarket.com shows that the all-electric Nissan Leaf costs $28,620 in Spain, where prices of this model are lowest, compared to the similar-sized petrol Nissan Micra, which would cost buyers in Spain $17,255.
Costs can be reduced by leasing the car’s battery rather than having it included in the upfront price. Experts say leasing a battery costs between $69 and $138 a month with the advantage that it will be replaced free of charge at the end of its life.
Industry analysts say the falling cost of the lithium batteries that power electric cars will see car prices fall in the near future. In the meantime, subsidies have helped to drive the take-up of electric and hybrid cars.
a chart showing the fall of the price of electric vehicles EV prices have fallen in recent years as battery technology improves. Image: Visual Capitalist Not enough chargers
Although publicly accessible battery chargers are being installed globally at a growing rate – up sevenfold in the past five years according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) – there is still a perception that there are not enough to keep electric cars on the road.
a chart showing the ratio of public chargers for electric vehicles Korea leads the way in EV chargers. Image: IEA And that perception is not groundless. In Europe, only France, Italy and the Netherlands have so far delivered the number of charging points required by the EU’s Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Directive, according to the IEA.
Elsewhere, much of the growth in public charging infrastructure has been in China, with the number of fast chargers increasing by 44% in 2020 to 310,000. By contrast, the IEA says there were 38,000 fast chargers in Europe at the end of 2020 and just 17,000 in the US.
Chip shortage
All of this assumes that you can simply go out and buy a new electric car. But across the world, a shortage of microchips is holding back deliveries of all types, including EVs. IHS Markit says production of 1.4 million cars and light vans was lost in the first quarter of 2021 alone.
They say chip makers have struggled with demand which surged when carmakers increased production after COVID-19 lockdowns. Analysts expect the shortages to persist through 2021 and into 2022, which they say will have an impact on the availability of cars of all types.
Battery fire risk
A study by Deloitte confirmed that the biggest consumer concerns about electric cars globally focus on driving range and the lack of charging points. But in China, 31% of those surveyed expressed worries about the safety of battery technology.
Battery fires in EVs have attracted a lot of media attention but, according to Ola Willstrand, Project Manager at RISE, the Swedish state research institute, there is no clear evidence of greater fire risk with electric cars. In fact, he says, the risk might even be lower.
a chart showing electric vehicle adoption in different regions Europe is leading the way in the adoption of electric vehicles. Image: Pew Research Reasons to be hopeful
But despite the challenges, electric car sales are rising across the world. The IEA says that global electric car sales rose by 140% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020.
China led the way with half a million new electric cars sold in the period, followed closely by Europe (450,000) and even in the US, EV sales doubled compared to the first quarter of 2020.
There are already more than 10 million electric cars on the world’s roads and the IEA forecasts there will be 145 million by 2030. It says there could be even more if governments provide incentives like more charging points and higher taxes on fossil fuels.
The World Economic Forum has convened the Global Battery Alliance, bringing together 42 global organizations including manufacturers and raw material producers. They say batteries have a key role to play in reducing the carbon footprint of the transport and power sectors.

RENNES-ODESSA ROAD TRIP | PART 1 |  location ^ Rennes. France date ^ 30 mai 2017 special ^ knappy kaisernappy ( https://soundcloud.com/equintin1) and me were leaving Rennes on Nissan Micra, which was full of our things (600 vinyls, 2 vinyl turntables, mixer, various hardware, modular and other music instruments, books, clothes, art works etc) for cross 3500 km and reach Odessa and Black Sea. location ^ Paris. France date ^ 30 mai - 2 june 2017 We needed first to reach Paris and work on last preparations before the official opening eve of Ukr-Fr Discuss art show. It should have been collective exhibition of french and ukrainian underground artists researches at the space of Le Centre culturel et d’information de l’Ambassade d’Ukraine with official organisation by Karpa Irena - First Secretary for Culture of the Embassy of Ukraine in France, and us, as curators of this project. We were responsible for all the conception, art content, mediation, communications, selection, curation etc. Except one room which was curated and selected by Karpa Irena. This exhibition was cancelled and vandalized two days after the official opening, one week before the official end. Artists and curators still wait for official explanations and excuses from the Cultural Center, but silence on this question brings us to the idea that we are invited to shut up about what happened there. Opening was a great moment, people who visited exhibition were interested and glad to see progressive art show in this place, and it was cool to see these art practices together in one place. Civil Stratos (music project of Pierre Louis Thomas/Rituel 111) and FZR (music project of artist Manuel Peraud) were Djing experimental selections, Knappy Kaisernappy was making sound collages through sampling, and some friends visitors of the show were playing piano, repeating isolated notes. White piano was cohabiting with Eugor paintings, and Mardi Noir map, these corrosive works were reverberating in this room, which was the most rich looking one. Under this room, another one was presenting MNPL Workshop researches through the form of three large size paintings : prolongation of their investigation work about urbanism, architecture and composition. Artists were thinking this project like canvas, on wood. But transportation through borders was turning this wish in something difficult to do (we were working without any material support), we took the decision to present them without, because it was a way to express their reality like artworks which cross borders when some people cant. It was important to talk about the question of circulation of works and bodies in the actual world in an official place like Centre Culturel Ukrainien en France. These bodies of paintings, who were travelling from so far, were now sharing space with Manuel Peraud plaster sculptures serial installation (36 sculptures, uniques and similar in the same time). This room was the bigger by size, and in presence of these two art researches, space was becoming a kind of meditative zone, dealing with the opposition between horizontality of Manuel Peraud research, and verticalization of painting by MNPL Workshop. Another little room was turned into meta installation project, featuring works by Giorgi Gangalove, Victor Ronné, Vincent Capmartin, Elsa Quintin, Ivan Samokrutkin, combining different elements from design object to reduced formats series, volumes, sculptures and paintings.

Nissan Leaf All-Terrain EV Charges Up For Mongol Rally [w/Video]

Nissan is no stranger to racing, but you won't find many of its vehicles on the rally stage – not in the WRC, nor in the Global or World Rallycross Championships neither. But it has converted one of its cars for a rally this summer. And while it's a hatchback, it's not the Micra, Note, or Pulsar you might expect.Read more »

Nissan reveals electric IMk city car concept Nissan has revealed the IMk concept, an electric city car that hints at future styling for the maker's small car range.  The Japanese car maker said the concept, which sits on a new EV platform, previews a “new direction of Nissan’s design language” and brings to life Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the brand’s umbrella term for technology including connectivity and autonomous systems. The boxy concept, to be shown at Toyko motor show later this month, is reminiscent of popular Japanese kei cars, but the car maker said the IMk was created to address a segment that’s “prevalent in Japan and becoming so the world over: the city car”. This suggests the IMk previews a global model, rather than a kei car, examples of which are typically only sold in Nissan’s home market. When asked whether a production version would be sold outside of Japan, Nissan said: “It’s a concept car. It shows the possibility of a small, chic urban EV. We look forward to hearing what potential customers think about it.” Currently, Nissan sells one EV: the Leaf. A zero-emissions SUV, previewed in the IMQ concept, is expected to be revealed in 2020. A production version of this IMk concept would allow Nissan to offer a cheaper EV, and one focused on city dwellers who are most likely to buy EVs. Given that the IMk concept sits on a new EV platform, it is likely such an architecture will be used across a number of Nissan's cars to ensure economies of scale. The slightly bigger Micra is one candidate for the
