Michigan lilies (Lilium michiganensis)
These are from my garden. Unedited. They're also the real deal. Not a cultivar, not a hybrid. They really grow like this in the wild.
They bloom in June and spread slowly but exponentially. Flower petals and bulbs are edible cooked (all parts are toxic to cats and dogs though). :)

Native wildflower collection 3
Continued from part 2
Columbine, which the rabbits won't let me grow
Mayapple. Every part of this plant is extremely toxic to humans, but some people still eat the fruit
Golden Alexander
Prairie rose. Looks nicer than cultivated roses tbh
Spiderwort, spiderwort, does whatever a spider... worts
Arrowwood. These grow long, straight branches, which made them very useful for making arrows.
Woodland pinkroot
Lizard tail
Michigan lily. Looks way cooler than the lilies you buy in plant stores
False sunflower
St. John's wort. Don't ask me what kind, there are so many
Germander
Thimbleweed
Prairie cinquefoil
Poppy mallow
Button bush. These develop seed balls that will fall apart in your hand
This one's called blue vervain even though it's clearly purple
Pickerel weed. People will call the coolest plants weeds
Wingstem. This stuff is taking over places where we removed invasive honeysuckle and I love it
Gaura
Yellow flowering hyssop (even though it's definitely white)
That's a wrap. I have a few more pictures, but they were all really badly focused, so I skipped them

Happy Hump Day 😃
It’s another muggy, cloudy drizzly day so far in mid Michigan. This day lily plant likes it for sure. This just opened up.
The clouds are supposed to break up in the afternoon. I hope they do, the humidity is very high today so far.
Happy Wednesday y’all.

Some random watercolor studies from last year when I was having a real hard time sleeping. Sometimes 4 am just calls you and you gotta get up and paint.

“Go visit the Prairies in June, when for scores on scores of miles you wade knee-deep among Tiger-lilies”
-vivid flashback to my discovery that there’s a kind of tiger lily that grows wild and native in the US; I’d never heard of them and had no idea they existed until I came across this cheerfully blooming by the side of the bike trail in the middle of nowhere:
#blew my mind#I went around wildly telling people about them. the MICHIGAN LILY did you KNOW#they just GROW by THEMSELVES#whale weekly#I’m not subscribed to the emails atm but I thought I might give it a shot#I’ve never read it and you guys seem to be having fun#so I’m catching up now

Prefix: Lily-
A golden, grey, red, or white cat.
Description: Michigan lilies, wood lilies, and trout lilies are a few of the most common types of terrestrial lily present in Michigan. Michigan lilies and wood lilies have tall stems, whorls of pointed leaves, and dark-spotted orange or red flowers with curled petals. Michigan lilies grow in moist habitats including meadows, stream edges, and swamps, and wood lilies grow in sandy clearings and forests. Trout lilies are spring ephemerals with mottled brown-and-green leaves and nodding yellow or white flowers, and they grow in large colonies within moist deciduous forests. In northern Michigan, the prefix Lily- can also be used in reference to the yellow petals and dark blue fruits of bluebead lilies, which can be found in bogs and coniferous forests, and in littoral territories, it can be used in reference to the white or yellow flowers of water lilies. True lilies in the genus Lilium, which include Michigan and wood lilies, are extremely toxic to cats, while bluebead lilies have only mildly poisonous fruits. Neither trout lilies nor water lilies are known to be toxic to cats.

Monday morning bike ride-
Before it gets too warm here, I hopped on my bike for a ride. Wanted to get a pic of these ☝️.
Around here the common term is Ditch Lily.
The real name is Orange Day Lily. They grow all over the place around here, mostly wild and sometimes planted.
These above are pretty ditch flowers growing just a bit north of the orange flowers. These light purple beauties are Purple Crown Vetch.
Nope, didn’t stop and sniff. Didn’t want to fall in the ditch. 😂
I wish a peaceful Monday to you guys. 😊
