Harriet: Boy with ringlets. Man with tattoos. Girl on... a leash? Man, if my parents ever tried putting me in one of those things, I'd trade them in. This kid looks like she can roll over and fetch. I learn everything I can, and I write down everything I see. Golly says I'd better start now if I want to be a writer. Which is why I am a spy.

Hello. Can you make a photoset of Lina Mendes's Christine wardrobe, please? I love that she got to wear many vintage costumes
VERY MUCH THIS. I am still so pleasantly surprised about some of the choices made for principal Lina Mendes and alternate Giulia Nadruz. That they resurrected the old Dutch costumes instead of making lots of new stuff, OMG! My inner Phantom costume nerd exploded with happiness. So yes! As a general note, all costumes were flewn in from Germany, which is also where they had the Dutch one in stock. This is also why the mix is German/Dutch. Here goes:
Hannibal 'Slavegirl' costume: Looked like a fairly standard recent German (Essen era) bodice, complete with wristbands and the distinct German Christine tiara:
The Elissa skirt: OMG THE RED SKIRT. Red skirts originated in Stockholm and Scheveningen; I wanna say this is is one of the original Dutch skirts due to the specific tab decorations. But it has been used in Germany for many years too; first appearing on Janine Kitzen in Stuttgart, and last on Michelle van de Ven in Hamburg and Elizabeth Welch in Oberhausen. Still, a rare one so yipee hooray on another principal wearing it!
The dressing gown: A very big-patterned skirt and fitted look. Another Essen costume that's been in the loop for some years, I wanna say this was first made for and worn by Beatrix Reiterer in Essen, and last used by Elizabeth Welch and Annemarijn Mandaag in Oberhausen.
Maid / Serafimo: The German maid skirt has typically been white, and the breeches typically mint green, from the original Hamburg production to the most recent Oberhausen production. So also here, worn by Lina Mendes in Sao Paulo.
The Rooftop costume: O... M... G. That is the wildest Rooftop dress ever made. Electric blue brocade covered with spray-painted contured lace, and with blue and purple decorations. Made for the original Dutch production, is a costume I never thought I would see on stage again. The costume looked quite overwhelmingly bad backstage. This is a good lesson in COSTUMES ARE MADE FOR THE STAGE, because it looks good under the lamp lights, and especially paired with a calming mint cloak.
The Star Princess: This is another good lesson in COSTUMES ARE MADE FOR THE STAGE, as this skirt also looked rather bad backstage. Plastic-like overlayer, with thick pink silk ribbons attaching the big silver stars. It looked like a children's version of the costume. But look at it on stage! Also nicely paired with a classic bodice with discrete beading and rich ruffles.
The Wishing dress: Oh yes they did! Paired that truly vintage Dutch Wishing bodice with a larger German skirt. The bodice can be recognized by the larger appliquées and the stripy cuffs, very typical for the first European versions of the costume. Me like.
The Aminta costume: No huge surprises here. One of the new Hamburg dresses, made in the style of the old Hamburg dresses - but with the addition of the Dutch aprons, just to keep that Dutch flair no? Nice combo.
The wedding dress: AAAA OOOOOHHH OH MY!!! Those bodices. Words can't express how much I love the earlt European bodices, with their exaggerated lines, long bodices, defined waistlines, rich silvery fabric and DECORATIONS. It was paired with a more unambitious recent German skirt, but with its long lines the whole costume reflect rather well on Maria Bjørnson's design. The old Dutch skirts had much more sparce lace.
Also bonus that the other Brazilian Christines wore the same type of bodice, which meant lots of photos of them in use. Here's alternate Giulia Nadruz:
So yeah... the saga of vintage Dutch costumes as worn by principal Lina Mendes in the Sao Paulo revival, and as originally designed by Maria Bjørnson.

CONCERT REVIEW: FLORENCE + THE MACHINE W/ JAPANESE BREAKFAST AT ROGERS ARENA - OCTOBER 4TH, 2022
Anyone who says rock and roll is a dying art clearly didn’t attend the Dance Fever tour. On Tuesday night, Florence Welch and Michelle Zauner – along with their bands – rocked Rogers Arena at a level that could compete with any legendary rock star in their prime. If Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac are the past, Florence and the Machine and Japanese Breakfast are the future, and it’s in good hands.
Japanese Breakfast have been around since 2014 – in fact, Michelle informed us that it happened to be their eight-year anniversary as a band. Originally from Oregon and now based in Philadelphia, they’ve established themselves as premium and mesmerizing artists. They’ve embarked on several tours, headlining and supporting acts like Belle and Sebastian, The National, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. However, Michelle told us this was the group’s very first time performing in an arena, a special moment for audience and band alike.
Much of their music is sorrowful and low tempo – dream pop mixed with complex time signatures and reverb. A colourful assortment of stage lights accompanied hypnotic saxophone solos and synth beats. Wearing a gorgeous and bright yellow dress, Michelle impressed us all by switching between singing in an ethereal and distinct voice, shredding the guitar, and doing her thing on the keyboards. She even banged a large gong on stage several times. The whole thing was just extremely cool. Michelle finished the final song of the set – 2017′s “Diving Woman” – with an extended guitar solo.
Although Michelle was the centre of attention, Peter Bradley on guitar, Craig Hendrix on drums, Deven Craige on bass, and especially Adam Schatz on sax all contributed to this one-of-a-kind psychedelic warm-up experience. The audience reaction could be summed up by Michelle herself: “Some audiences can be sterile, but you guys disproved that. So thank you for such a warm welcome, this has been so fun.”
(My one complaint is that I was hoping to hear “Jane Cum” from her first album on the setlist. She simply had too many great songs to choose from.)
There was thunderous roars and cheers as Florence and the Machine took the stage. It’s hard to put into words how much this woman absolutely commands and focuses the audience in an arena. Watching her perform, it doesn’t feel like you’re with 15,000 other people. It feels closer to 150, or even just 15. All eyes are on her and you can feel the energy shift. She absolutely bedazzled in a red and white flowing dress – and as with almost all her shows, she was barefoot. A crystal-like structure adorned her as a backdrop, with the pieces moving to create a chandelier for some of the show. She also performed a bit beyond a thin transparent curtain, creating really cool effects with shadows. Although there were no visuals in the traditional sense, this stage decor really captured our attention.
A few songs in, Florence greeted Vancouver. She asked for whom this was the first time. “You might be wondering what’s going on here. Is it Miss Havisham the Musical? Is it a British pagan dance ceremony? Am I safe? There seem to be a lot of vampire brides here. Is it a cult? Are they gonna eat me? Anyone brought along or chaperoned, all I can say to you is that it’s so much easier if you really give into it and you’ll be absolutely fine… if you just do every single thing that I say.”
She encouraged us to put our phones away and to just share a moment, and to tell our neighbours to do the same either politely or with some more salty British language. Although I have no problem with some phones and pictures, it’s always nice to see a united arena connected to the music and no electronics.
She played a wide variety of songs from her decade-long career. There was a good order to the setlist, mixing up old and new, slow and fast. Her dancing is especially something to be admired; Florence flows gracefully, almost gliding around the stage, never letting her energy down throughout. Between her belting out “What Kind of Man,” singing an upbeat song with volatile lyrics (“Kiss With a Fist”) or just letting us dance it out in an encore to “Shake It Out,” there was never a dull moment.
Before “Morning Elvis” – off her latest album, Dance Fever – she explained to us that it was written during the height of the pandemic, “when I wasn’t sure if we could do this again.” Florence’s performance and stage presence are arguably just as important to her career as her studio music is, and it was obvious she felt as happy to be there as we did. There’s something genuinely special and heartwarming about seeing artists play again, to be back up there. It’s really a privilege too many of us took for granted before 2020, and a reminder of what has been sacrificed to continue enjoying live entertainment today.
There were several points in the show when Florence came down to the barrier to hug, hold, and sing to lucky fans just inches away. She even walked through the floor area to come to the other side and sing in the middle of the crowd. All eyes were on her, and it only served to make the show feel more intimate and special.
I feel it was an honour and privilege to be in the audience. But Florence makes you feel special and appreciated in return. “Look out and witness so much beauty everywhere, and the creativity. I’m so grateful for what you put in every night.” She also thanked us for supporting live music, since it continues to be a hard time for so many artists.
Whether you’re young or old, a longtime or new fan, a Florence and the Machine concert is one of the most passionate and beautiful shows you can go to. I saw Florence once before at a festival and was totally engaged and blown away by her performance. Seeing her headline an arena with a full set only further proved to me she’s one of the best touring artists around right now. Literally nobody is doing it like her; she’s one of a kind and an international treasure. I’m so happy she exists and that I got to share that night with her.

Referred Species: R. carolinensis, R. manhattanensis
Status: Extinct
Time and Place: Sometime between 227 and 208.5 million years ago, in the Norian of the Late Triassic
Rutiodon is primarily known from the Eastern United States; there are reports from Canada, as well, but these are more dubious. All reports from the Chinle Formation that were once assigned to Rutiodon have since been given their own names. It is known from the Blue Bell Quarry and the New Oxford Formation of Pennsylvania, the Cumnock and Pekin Formations of North Carolina, and the Ewing Creek Member of the Lockatong Formation and the Passaic Formation of New Jersey.
Physical Description: Rutiodon was a Phytosaur, so naturally it looked ridiculously similar to modern crocodilians - and wasn’t one in the slightest. In fact, Phytosaurs and Crocodilians have a major difference - they had their nostrils far back on the head, close to the eyes, rather than on the tip of the snout. Rutiodon itself was very long, between 3 and 8 meters in body length, making it one of the largest animals in its environment. It had a very long, narrow jaw, with large teeth inside that grew much bigger at the front of the jaw. Weirdly enough, it was covered in armored plates like modern crocodilians on its back, sides, and tail, though this is a clear-cut case of convergent evolution - Crocodilians evolved from completely different Triassic reptiles. Rutiodon had a long tail, a squat body, and legs splayed out to the sides, just enhancing how much it resembled living crocodilians.
Diet: Rutiodon would have fed on small animals and fish in its environment, using the hook in its jaw as well as the large teeth to grab onto struggling prey and hold it steady.
Behavior: Despite its uncanny resemblance to living crocodilians, it is difficult to determine whether or not Phytosaurs such as Rutiodon would have actually behaved like them. While being an ambush predator in the water it called home makes a certain amount of sense, that sense is primarily based on its resemblance to living analogues. That said, it’s also possible that the extreme length of its mouth would have aided Rutiodon in reaching and grabbing food that would be out of reach for a more snort-shouted animal (such as the large predatory amphibians that it shared a home with). It probably would have taken care of its young, though if it was more social than that it would have been more out of convenience than anything else. That said, Rutiodon seems to have been quite common, so groups of “I guess we’re all in this place together” may have been very common and a large annoyance to animals in the area trying to move through unscathed.
Ecosystem: In general, Rutiodon lived in lake environments, usually near forests with decent amounts of water present beyond the lake. Flooding and swamp-like conditions were probably favored by this genus, based on its fossil neighbors. It was found in lakes, river deltas, and floodplains that would frequently turn into extremely overflowed swamps. In the Cumnock Environment of North Carolina, it lived alongside the large amphibian Dictyocephalus, as well as therapsids like Dromatherium and Microconodon and a variety of fish and unnamed reptiles. In the New Oxford Formation of Pennsylvania, it lived alongside another large amphibian - Koskinodon - as well as the fish Synorichthys, and potentially other Phytosaurs like Suchoprion and Palaeoctonus. Finally, in Lockatong, it lived with the Tanystropheid Tanytrachelos, the Kuehneosaurid Icarosaurus, the Protorosaur Hypuronector, the Rhynchosaurid Rhynchosauroides, unnamed dinosaurs, another Metoposaurid, and a variety of fish like Diplurus, Synorichthys, Turseodus, and Osteopleurus. All that fish would have made an excellent source of food for Rutiodon, along with those small Therapsids!
Other: Phytosaurs like Rutiodon are a fun group of creatures that actually come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and aren’t all so similar to Crocodilians - they had weaker ankyls, no bony structure in the mouth to aid in breathing while underwater (though they may have had a fleshy one), and they actually had even more armor than crocodilians. That said, there is a chance Rutiodon and relatives are… stem-Crocodilians. What this means is, that living Crocodilians are their closest modern relatives. This is a subject of hot debate - they’re either the earliest branching members of the Crocodile-Relative group, or they’re closely but equally related to all modern archosaurs (so, they’d be equally Crocodile - and equally bird!) More research on these animals are sure to reveal further insights into their place in the evolution of the ruling reptiles.

A Look Back at the Best Fashion Moments in Met Gala History
Mention the first Monday in May to any fashion lover and they’ll immediately know what you’re talking about. Each year, the star-studded Met Gala takes place on this date, in partnership with The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and brings with it some of the most incredible fashion looks we’ll see in the year. From larger-than-life ballgowns to radical suits, there’s no limit on self-expression on style. However, today looks a little different as this year’s Met Gala – to be themed About Time: Fashion and Duration – has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So instead, we took a look back at the event’s archives to relive some of its most memorable moments. Ahead, see 62 of the best Met Gala looks of all time.

My alternative 91st Academy Awards
As always during 31 Days of Oscar, I partake in an annual fantasy. What would the Oscars look like if I stuffed the ballots - choosing every single nomination and choosing every single winner? It always would look a lot different. Fans of Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice? Come at me.
91st Academy Awards – February 24, 2019 Dolby Theatre – Hollywood, Los Angeles, California Host: None Broadcaster: ABC
Best Picture: ROMA
BlacKkKlansman, Sean McKittrick, Jason Blum, Raymond Mansfield, Jordan Peele, and Spike Lee (Focus)
Burning (KOR), Lee Joon-dong and Lee Chang-dong (Pinehouse Film/Now Film/NHK/CGV Arthouse/Well Go USA Entertainment)
Eighth Grade, Scott Rudin, Eli Bush, Lila Yacoub, and Christopher Storer (A24)
The Favourite, Ceci Dempsey, Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday, and Yorgos Lanthimos (Fox Searchlight)
Mission: Impossible – Fallout, J.J. Abrams, Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie, and Jake Myers (Paramount)
Roma (MEX), Alfonso Cuarón, Gabriela Rodriguez, and Nicolas Celis (Netflix)
Shoplifters (JPN), Matsuzaki Kaoru, Yose Akihiko, and Taguchi Hijiri (AOI Promotion/Fuji TV/GAGA/Magnolia Pictures)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Avi Arad, Ami Pascal, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Christina Steinberg (Columbia)
A Star Is Born, Bill Gerber, Jon Peters, Bradley Cooper, Todd Phillips, and Lynette Howell Taylor (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/Warner Bros.)
Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Morgan Neville, Caryn Capotosto, and Nicholas Ma (Focus)
Wholesale changes in this category compared to real life. The best three films of 2018, to me, were Burning, Roma, and Shoplifters -- none of these were in the English language. Films I tossed for Best Picture were Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, and Vice. I don’t think any of those four films have any business being in this category. In their place are the likes of Eighth Grade, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, and one of the most technically marvelous action films in decades in Mission: Impossible -- Fallout. Yes, an M:I film (superb editing, setpieces, and audacious style that finally wakes the franchise up).
But I’m going for an unexciting pick according to some with Roma. To use an oxymoron, it is an intimate epic -- one crafted beautifully, daring to comment on relations between ethnicities and the sexes at a certain time in Mexico.
Best Director
Lee Chang-dong, Burning
Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
Hirokazu Koreeda, Shoplifters
Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Paul Schrader, First Reformed
If you’re scratching your head, yes... Paul Schrader was nominated for Director in my ceremony, but First Reformed is nowhere to be found in Picture. I tend to do this for one Best Director nominee every year.
Best Actor
Christian Bale, Vice
Ryan Gosling, First Man
Ethan Hawke, First Reformed
Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
Yoo Ah-in, Burning
The real-life Best Actor category this year is the most dire slate in a while. So here is your palate cleanser.
Best Actress
Yalitza Aparicio, Roma
Glenn Close, The Wife
Olivia Colman, The Favourite
Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade
Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born
It is not so much acting, as inhabiting. And, as a non-professional actress, Yalitza Aparicio has it. And I believe that, in my alternate Oscar universe (yes, I’ve drawn up and thought about it for many ceremonies past... I’ll reveal those some day), Aparicio would be the first indigenous woman to be awarded an acting Oscar.
Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali, Green Book
Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Josh Hamilton, Eighth Grade
Tim Blake Nelson, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Steven Yeun, Burning
Ali is good, don’t get me wrong. But, compared to the movie Moonlight and his performance in it, it looks like he is about to get a second Oscar for a far worse movie and a lesser role. Ali is fourth or fifth in this lineup for me. Grant is fantastic in Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Best Supporting Actress
Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
Emma Stone, The Favourite
Marina de Tavira, Roma
Rachel Weisz, The Favourite
Michelle Yeoh, Crazy Rich Asians
This comes down to the fact I couldn’t separate Stone and Weisz’s performances in their saucy movie. Nor could I find the argument to give de Tavira or Yeoh the Oscar. This is a bit of a default choice, I hate to say.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, and Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman
Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk
Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini, Leave No Trace
Spike Lee would have at least one or two Oscars in my alternative universe by this point! The difference between the screenplays for BlacKkKlansman and Can You Ever Forgive Me? is far slighter than you think.
Best Original Screenplay
Bo Burnham, Eighth Grade
Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara, The Favourite
Paul Schrader, First Reformed
Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
Hirokazu Koreeda, Shoplifters
Not even a contest if you asked me. This category is something else if I consider The Favourite and Roma bringing up the rear. But Koreeda’s drama about a found family that does what they can to survive is the culmination of what he has done in his career thus far. This is his Oscar.
Best Animated Feature
Incredibles 2 (Pixar/Walt Disney)
Night is Short, Walk On Girl, Japan (GKIDS/Toho Company)
Ruben Brandt, Collector, Hungary (Mozinet/Sony Pictures Classics)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Columbia)
Tito and the Birds, Brazil (Bits Produções/Shout! Factory)
Longtime followers know that I have unorthodox opinions about animated features. The only Animated Feature Oscar I’ve handed to Pixar/Walt Disney Animation Studios since beginning this tradition in 2013 was for Inside Out. I thought Ralph Breaks the Internet was a painful addition to the Disney animated canon, so it is not here. Nor is Wes Anderson’s culturally insensitive Isle of Dogs or Mamoru Hosoda’s sloppy Mirai. At the end of the day? No boat-rocking this time, except in some of the other nominees.
Best Documentary Feature
Free Solo (National Geographic)
Hale County This Morning, This Evening (The Cinema Guild)
Minding the Gap (ITVS/Kartemquin Films/Hulu/Magnolia Pictures)
Three Identical Strangers (CNN/Channel 4/Neon)
Won’t You Be My Neighbor? (Focus)
Shoulda been nominated! Shoulda won! But in the spirit of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, these are all great documentaries. Minding the Gap is a close #2.
Best Foreign Language Film
Burning, South Korea
Capernaum, Lebanon
Cold War, Poland
Roma, Mexico
Shoplifters, Japan
Best Cinematography
Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
Caleb Deschanel, Never Look Away (GER)
Rob Hardy, Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Matthew Libatique, A Star Is Born
Łukasz Żal, Cold War
Best Film Editing
Barry Alexander Brown, BlacKkKlansman
Jay Cassidy, A Star Is Born
Tom Cross, First Man
Eddie Hamilton, Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Yorgos Mavropsaridis, The Favourite
Best Original Musical*
Julia Michels, A Star Is Born
Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Mary Poppins Returns
Sia, Greg Kurstin, Scott Walker, and Margaret Yen, Vox Lux
*Best Original Musical – known previously as several other names – exists in the Academy’s rulebooks, but requires activation from the Academy’s music branch. To qualify, a film must have no fewer than five original songs. This category was last activated when Prince won for Purple Rain (1984).
Best Original Score
Michael Giacchino, Incredibles 2
Justin Hurwitz, First Man
John Powell, Solo
Alan Silvestri, Ready Player One
Brian Tyler, Crazy Rich Asians
The Star Wars universe is in good musical hands when John Williams leaves after Episode IX!
Best Original Song
“All the Stars”, music by Kendrick Lamar, Sounwave, and Anthony Tiffith, lyrics by Lamar, SZA, and Tiffith, Black Panther
“Nowhere to Go but Up”, music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Mary Poppins Returns
“The Place Where Lost Things Go”, music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Mary Poppins Returns
“Shallow”, music and lyrics by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt, A Star Is Born
“When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings”, music and lyrics by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Best Costume Design
