Harriet: Boy with ringlets. Man with tattoos. Girl on... a leash? Man, if my parents ever tried putting me in one of those things, I'd trade them in. This kid looks like she can roll over and fetch. I learn everything I can, and I write down everything I see. Golly says I'd better start now if I want to be a writer. Which is why I am a spy.

Harriet M. Welch from Harriet the Spy. Focused, determined, ambitious, & imaginative. Stubborn, judgemental of others, unaware of people's feelings. Eats same foods (a cheese sandwich for lunch every day). Lacks any sense of boundaries. Special interests: spying & writing. Writes as a form of stimming. My younger self 😇

My siblings and I were raised to understand that God sees everything you do, and that all earthly privacy is conditional. “There are no secrets on the computer” was meant to keep us safe from predators, but also to monitor what we did, said, and believed. I kept a “secret notebook” (like my role model Harriet M Welch) and when I got too reticent about what I was writing (stories about dragons, usually), my parents reminded me that they could take it and read it whenever they wanted to. Knowing this, I developed my own cipher at 11 and wrote my stories in code.
I’m still not sure to what extent my dad was actually monitoring my online activities as a kid, but by the time I was a teenager I was convinced that he could view anything at any time if he wanted to. I was like 19, reading Sociological Images while home from college and still wondering if he was browsing along with me through some secret script that gave him access to anything on our home wifi.
He once found my old fannish Twitter account, which I had not shared with him, and sat on it for months before confronting me about the “nasty story” I’d written. I’m still not sure how long he had known about it or how much he saw before I locked down my account. Again as a young adult, I wrote a guest post complaining about his misogyny for a popular blog in my circle. I didn’t use my full name, but he found it anyway, and again sat on it for months before bringing it up.
I’m almost 28 and have lived away from home full-time for five years. I still occasionally have dreams about my dad monitoring me through sneaky spy tech or simple snooping. I’ll get a tip about it from a friend or sibling, and I’ll dream of tearing apart my surroundings looking for a secret camera, a bug on my router, microphones in my car, whatever. The most recent one was last week. The device was a 90s-computer-beige box the size of a child’s head and the ill-gotten data was stored on a floppy disk.
I’ve lived my life in a panopticon. No matter whether he was really watching me or not, I believed that he could always start if he wanted to. I’ve tried to stay one step ahead, concealing information and watching for any unintentional breadcrumbs I might be leaving behind me. These days, instead of indulging my borderline delusional paranoia about my dad, I’ve tried to channel that energy into the real-life digital privacy community, where at least we have hard evidence that governments and corporations spy on people and how our data is being collected and used.
As always: check out privacytools.io and switching.social
