He told his wife, "I love you," then left for work that morning. He never returned. It was September 11, 2001.
He was a husband. He was a veteran. He was an immigrant. And, he was a hero.
According to the Homeland Security web site, Rick Rescorla is credited with saving 2,700 lives that morning, when he defied official instructions to stay in the building and instead evacuated employees at his company on the 44th floor of the South Tower.
Another hero was Betty Ong, who was one of the flight attendants aboard American Airlines Flight 11, who gave vital information to the ground crew that eventually led to the closing of airspace by the FAA for the first time in United States history.
Flight 93 passengers Todd Beamer, Mark Bingham, Tom Burnett and Jeremy Glick fought their hijackers, preventing the plane from reaching its intended target, possibly the White House or the U.S. Capitol Building.
There were also 412 First Responders who died in the line of duty - 343 firefighters (including a chaplain and two paramedics) of the New York City Fire Department, 37 police officers of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, 23 police officers of the New York City Police Department, and 8 emergency medical technicians and paramedics from private emergency medical services and 1 patrolman from the New York Fire Patrol.
There were also smaller acts of bravery, such as Michael Benfante and John Cerqueira carrying a woman in a wheelchair down 68 floors of the north tower of the World Trade Center to safety and Frank De Martini and Pablo Ortiz of the Port Authority who saved at least 50 lives in the North Tower.
They and many others were the heroes of 9/11.
In all, there were 2,977 people who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The victims were mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters and brothers who belonged to many faiths, races, and cultures, from more than 90 countries.
Of the Americans - they were white, they were black, they were brown, they were red, they represented all the different colors that built this nation. They were LGBTQ, they were straight, they were men, they were women, they were liberal, they were conservative, they were young, they were old . . . they were ALL Americans.
No one questioned whether they stood for the national anthem or put their hand over their heart, no one demanded they show their citizenship papers, no one questioned their love for their country.
I remember 9/11. I remember the names of the victims being read. I remember the heroes who bled. I remember the families who cried. I also remember that for one day, the entire world cried with us, marched in candlelight vigils in support of "America," whether it was in England or Iran -- for one moment the world was one.
I post this each year not just to remember the victims, the heroes, all the people who were directly touched in some way that day, but I also want to post this for those who are still suffering today, the families who had no choice but to continue without their loved ones, the veterans of the wars who were not supported upon their return and represent a majority of the suicides in this nation (on this World Suicide Prevention Day), the first responders who sacrificed their lives and their health and are still suffering today and their brothers and sisters fighting fires this very moment, and, most importantly, all the people of the world still hoping for, still seeking, still dreaming of a world without HATE, a world without fear, a world without greed.
A world instead focused with Love, a world with Hope, a world with . . .
Peace ~

Geronimo – Eine Amerikanische Legende
Geronimo – Eine Amerikanische Legende

A Work of Street Art: The Best Murals in Nashville
As Nashville continues to grow, so does its street art scene. And the more I deviate from my normal route in Nashville—thanks, traffic!—the more I see bold, new murals popping up daily. I absolutely love it. They’re unavoidable, they’re stunning, and they really dress the place us.
I’ve spent the past several years photographing every mural I’ve found. This is an exhaustive list of murals we’ve tracked down in every corner of Nashville, but my no means all of them, as street artists are adding to Music City’s cultural fabric daily thanks in part to creative pioneers like the Nashville Walls Project, which has been connecting both local and international artists with building owners for a handful of years.
Still, whether you’re a local looking for a Spring Break staycation idea or traveling around Music City’s many neighborhoods on your next weekend getaway, I hope you’ll use this handy map as your guide—and drop descriptions of any murals you find that I may have missed in the comments so I can add them accordingly.
Note: This post was last updated in March 2019.
Germantown
The neighborhood I spend most of my time in thanks to my yoga studio’s location is also one that’s quite walkable and boasts a growing number of restaurants. Park your car near Werthan Lofts and hit up these walls and murals by foot.
Rolf & Daughters wall, artist: Shantell Martin
700 Taylor St. at 7th Avenue North
Waves mural, artists: Eastside Murals
5th Avenue North and Monroe Street
Nashville scenes, artist: unknown
Rosa L Parks Boulevard and Taylor Street, across from Werthan Lofts
Saint Stephen (previously Mop | Broom), artist: Nathan Brown
1300 3rd Ave. N
Kindness Is, artist: Rebekah & Sarah
1120 4th Ave. N (on the side of Juice Bar Germantown)
Beethoven graffiti, artist: Blek Le Rat
(on the side of Barista Parlor x Germantown)
Marathon Village
My friend Adrien Saporiti (formerly of DCXV Industries) is the brains behind the iconic “I Believe in Nashville” mural, which has been posted more than one million times from seven different continents and which you can now see in Marathon Village, Riverside Village and in 12South. I prefer the Marathon Village location as it’s usually devoid of large crowds (though parking is tricky), plus you can visit Nelson’s Greenbrier and Corsair distilleries while there.
I Believe in Nashville murals, artist: Adrien Saporiti
Clinton Street, 625 Main St. and 2702 12th Ave. S
Jefferson Street Corridor
For those interested in Civil Rights history, there are some fascinating pieces along Jefferson near the Tennessee State University campus, particularly beneath the I-40 underpass.
Green Fleet Bicycle Shop mural, artist: Dough Joe/Yusef Hubb
934 Jefferson St.
Gateway to Heritage murals, artists: various
Jefferson Street beneath I-40
blues singers mural, artist: unknown
Jefferson Street between 26th and 27th Avenues
Elks Lodge mural, artist: Dough Joe/Yusef Hubb
2614 Jefferson St.
The Gulch
The “Wings mural” as many call it became the first conversation starter in the Gulch, but a number of bright, splashy creations have joined the fray this year so it’s worth strolling down 11th Avenue South to see else what you may find.
#WhatLiftsYou Nashville Wings mural, artist: Kelsey Montague
11th Avenue South (near Biscuit Love/behind Taziki’s)
Google Fiber mural in the Gulch, artist: Chris Zidek
118 12th Ave. N (on the side of Whiskey Kitchen)
The Nashville Walls Project, artists: Ian Ross, Jason Woodside
11th Avenue South and Laurel Street
12th and Porter mural, artist: Kim Kennedy
114 12th Ave. N
Patagonia mural, artist: Nathan Brown
601 Overton St. (side of Patagonia)
Note: The addition of Patagonia replaced this mural, which was one of my all-time favorites and a collaboration between Nathan Brown and Chris Zidek. I am happy, however, that Patagonia kept the general theme of the mural and also hired the same artist to do it!
Plaza Artist Materials mural, artist: Maggie Sanger
633 Middleton St.
Country music icon murals (Dolly, Johnny, Loretta, etc.), artist: unknown
711 6th Ave. S (on the back of Ed’s Supply Company)
8th Avenue South + Wedgewood Houston
I predict this area rife in artist galleries and studios will be the next big neighborhood for murals if zoning codes don’t prevent them, but for now, you really have to go hunting to find them.
Pastel geometrics mural, artist: unknown
429B Houston St. (patio of Jackalope Brewing Company’s Ranch)
#OleAllDay Tennessee Tristar mural, artist: unknown
462 Humphreys St. (on the side of Ole Rights Management)
Life Can Be Sweet mural, artist: Susanna Chapman
1512 8th Ave. S (side of Baked on 8th)
Hillsboro Village
Hillsboro Village is changing dramatically; it’s now easier to arrive on foot than find parking. But if you can nab a coveted spot, there’s a paid lot behind Pancake Pantry just off Belcourt Avenue (be sure and get a ticket before you leave your car as meter maids here are brutal!). An hour is all you need to wander this small area on the Vanderbilt campus and snap a couple shots of its walls.
Hillsboro Village dragon mural, artists: David Glick, Adam Randolph
2102 Belcourt Ave. (across from the Belcourt Theatre)
Drippy Lips mural, artist: Donald “Drawbertson” Robertson
1814 21st Ave. S (on the side of UAL)
12South
12South is another one of those highly walkable ‘hoods with murals tucked around every corner. Park on one of the side streets—just make sure it’s not a residential-only parking area, as you will get a ticket—and walk from one length at Sevier Park to the other at 12South Flats.
Nashville at Heart rainbow mural (former), artists: Eastside Murals
2705 12th Ave. S
Note: This has now been replaced with this Nashville #PeaceLoveGoodDeeds mural instead.
Draper James wall, artist: unknown
2608 12th Ave. S
12South flowers mural, artist: unknown
2900 12th Ave. S (the side of Green Pea Salon)
Make Music Not War mural, artist: Relax Max
2902 12th Ave. S (the side of Epice, across from Green Pea Salon)
Halycon Bike Shop mural, artist: Aaron Martin
2802 12th Ave. S
Rivive! 12South, artist: Mobe Oner
2814 12th Ave. S
12South graffiti, artist: unknown
12th Avenue South and Elmwood Avenue (photo credit: Joe Hendricks)
Charlotte Ave./Sylvan Park
Many of the murals along Charlotte Avenue are located along one stretch installed by Off the Wall Charlotte, a project backed by the Greater Nashville Arts & Business Council with several corporate sponsors. They’re a bit tricky to reach by foot, so I recommend parking in the lot in front of AVO and crossing the street at the traffic light with your photographer poised on the other side of the busy road.
Avocado mural, artist: unknown
3 City Ave. (side of AVO)
Take Flight mural, artist: Kevin Bongang / OFF the Wall Nashville
3020 Charlotte Ave. at 28th Avenue North
Fly Higher mural, artist: Joseph “Sentrock” Perez / OFF the Wall Nashville
3020 Charlotte Ave. at 28th Avenue North
It’s Gonna Be OK, artist: Sarah Tate / OFF the Wall Nashville

3020 Charlotte Ave. at 28th Avenue North
artist: Julia Martin / OFF the Wall Nashville
3020 Charlotte Ave. at 28th Avenue North
Jessi Zazu #AintAfraid mural, artist: Billy Lilly / OFF the Wall Nashville
3020 Charlotte Ave. at 28th Avenue North
Black Cat Tips mural, artist: Kyle Brooks / OFF the Wall Nashville

3636 Murphy Rd.
Wish for Peace mural, artist: WHAT. Creative Group
4822 Charlotte Ave.
Love Heals Every Body mural, artist: Michael Cooper
5122 Charlotte Ave. (side of The Café at Thistle Farms)
The Nations
The Nations is very much up-and-coming, and this 160-foot-tall portrait of 91-year-old Nashville native Lee Estes painted on an old silo is one of its most famed residents. I love seeing more new businesses are commissioning pieces as a way to bring art lovers to this very hip ‘hood.
Silo mural, artist: Guido van Helten
1407 51st Ave. N
The Nations walls, artists: Mobe Oner, Zidekahedron, Folek
5901 California Ave. (side of Music City Tents & Events)
Beaujolais mural, artist: Chloe Meyer
5026 Centennial Blvd. (on the side of Nicky’s Coal Fired)
Tennessee state outline, artist: WHAT. Creative Group
5012 Centennial Blvd. (on the side of Southern Grist Brewing Co.)
“Play Well” Lego Man mural, artist: forBecks
1400 51st Ave N (front entrance to Frothy Monkey)
Music Row/Midtown
Midtown is getting a pop of color with some new street art painted down alleys and on parking garages. Music Row, which has a protected historic overlay, on the other hand, isn’t exactly brimming with street art, so you have to go in search of fun pieces like this by heading down Roy Acuff Lane on foot. Pro tip: Also grab a photo with the guitar installations outside of Studio B while you’re there.
Elliston Parking Garage, Nashville Walls Project artists: Chris Zidek, Audi Adams, Folek, Chase, Brian Wooden, Tess Erlenborn, Daniel Lane, Mobe, Emily Miller, Nathan Brown.
207 Louise Ave. (across from Cafe Coco)
Hieroglitches mural, artist: Adrien Saporiti
2813 West End Ave. (beside the entrance to Three Brothers Coffee)
Dueling Cowboys mural, artist: Mike Shine
24 Music Square West (across the street from Historic RCA Studio B)
walls inside Le Sel, artist: Alic Daniel
1922 Adelicia St.
Downtown
Downtown is dotted with murals—like the Rainbow Walls that Instagram commissioned from Adrien Saporiti for IG’s #KindComments campaign in support of the LGBTQ community—but there are also a number of country music personalities like Johnny Cash who have their own dedicated pieces of art.
The Art of the Chalice, artists: Eastside Murals
174 3rd Ave. N (on the side of Piranha’s Bar & Grill)
Instagram’s #KindComments Mural, artist: Adrien Saporiti
218 3rd Ave. N (on the side of Black Rabbit)
Gibson Tribute guitar wall, artists: Brandon Donahue, Chris Zidek, Emily Miller, Herb Williams, Sam Dunson
3rd Avenue N (across Printer’s Alley from Skulls)
Downtown dog mural, artist: Herakut
204 6th Ave. N (side of Nashville Finance Co.)
Downtown Presbyterian duo of murals, artist: Tavar Zawacki
5th Avenue N alley between Church and Commerce streets
Curiot and Rone murals, artists: Favio Martinez, Tyrone Wright
Church Street between 6th Avenue S and St. Cloud Alley (side of Oscar’s Taco Shop)
Rivive! mural, artist: Beau Stanton
5th Avenue N and Commerce Street
The Wall of Cash mural, artists: Thoughts Manifested Crew
300 4th Ave. South
Note: This one is at risk of being torn down.
East Nashville
Of all the neighborhoods in town, East Nashville is the one most brimming with street art of all kinds—you’ll find it on the sides of buildings, you’ll see it hidden beneath construction zones, you’ll spy paintings on the backs of residential fences. The easiest way to see it all is to hop in the car with a friend and drive down Gallatin Pike to see what all you can find.
Stay Tuned Nashville mural, artist: Adrien Saporiti
Center 615 at 625 Main St.
Little Octopus mural, artist: Chris Zidek
604 Gallatin Ave.
#WhatLiftsYou Hot Air Balloon mural, artist: Kelsey Montague
1034 W Eastland Ave. (side of the Cleo)
Nashville balloons mural, artist: Mobe Oner
1003 Russell St. (side of Boombozz East Nashville)
Google Fiber geometrics mural, artist: Nathan Brown
1012 Woodland St. (on the side of Five Points Pizza)
Five Points murals, artists: Leah Tumerman, Sterling Goller Brown
103 South 11th St. (on the side of and behind Eastside Cycles)
East Nashville Center 615 mural, artist: Folek
626 Main St.
Cactus murals, artist: unknown
N. 7th St. on the alleyway between Main and Woodland streets
The Crying Wolf mural, artist: Denton Burrows, Lauren Asta

A world instead focused with Love, a world with Hope, a world with . . .
Peace ~

A War Movie For People Who Know Or Care Nothing About War
The previous summer, NBC's Brian Williams composed a piece called "The Hurt Locker: Hurting for a Fact-Checker" in regards to one of the best two competitors for Best Picture at this present end of the week's Oscars. Williams noted, "I found a huge number of specialized mistakes dependent on my couple of outings to Iraq during the tallness of the contention. Seeing the film caused me to return over a large number of the positive audits I read... [I]t is currently away from of them was composed by any individual who had invested any energy with U.S. military in Iraq." https://new-solarmovie.com/other-brands Williams proposed that the movie producers messed up the accompanying minor subtleties: the vehicles, the protective layer, the weapons, the caps, the outfits, the correspondences innovation, the military language, the unit structure, the order methodology, and the mission coordinations.
On the in addition to side, Williams noticed that the movie producers precisely depicted fighters' fingernails being filthy and their eyelashes being secured with dust. Score one for film verite! Williams additionally commended the film's exquisite desert landscape.
Williams finished, "I'd prefer to watch 'The Hurt Locker' with a battle veteran, yet my layman's eyes saw route as an excessive amount to squabble with."
Luckily for Williams, battle veterans have just observed the film. Sadly for chief Kathryn Bigelow, their analysis of the film is much more scorching than Williams'.
Paul Rieckhoff, Founder and Executive Director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, presented an ongoing article for Newsweek reasoning that "Hollywood's most recent endeavor to characterize the Iraq War and the American soldiers who have battled in it is similarly as baffling as all the others created up until now."
Rieckhoff's evaluate, while bringing up extra and more nuanced mistakes than Williams', contends that the snowballing amassing of blunders in the film isn't unimportant, yet rather mirrors a messy, reprehensible rendering of the military that uncovers significant numbness and sums to incredible irreverence on the movie producers' part.
For instance, Rieckhoff censures the portrayal of the profoundly particular Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) bunch at the focal point of the film as calmly putting on other military caps in their extra time, expertly doing sharpshooter missions and kicking in entryways and checking structures for extremists, employments for which they could never have been prepared.
Rieckhoff states, "The scene with Jeremy Renner's character sneaking misguided to pursue a kid he is stressed over is as anecdotal as Jason Bourne... The men in my company adhered to rules and requests, and they stayed with their individual officers... They don't go around on their own except if they need to be court-martialed-or executed."
The L.A. Times' Julian Barnes refers to EOD colleagues in Iraq who damn "The Hurt Locker" with black out acclaim: they call it "a decent activity film on the off chance that you know nothing about defusing side of the road bombs or the military." (How about that sound altering!)
Barnes cites EOD professional Sgt. Eric Gordon saying, "I would watch it with other EOD individuals, and we would giggle." (Then once more, numerous individuals I know have had a similar response to individual Oscar chosen one "Symbol.") Gordon analyzed one officer defusing a bomb utilizing wire cutters to "a fireman go into a structure with a spurt bottle."
A considerably all the more calming analysis of the film includes its depiction of the fundamental character, Sergeant William James, as a peril adoring, adrenaline-dependent, convention destroying commando who wantonly upsets unit attachment and imperils unit individuals with unreliable, intense person playacting.
The Washington Post cites Iraq veteran Ryan Gallucci expressing that he needed to continue killing the film "or, more than likely I would have tossed my remote through the TV"; Gallucci concedes that he continued needing to see James "exploded... I needed to see his helpless colleagues get another group chief, who was really worried about their wellbeing."
In an exposition for The New York Times unpretentiously named "How Not to Depict a War," EOD group videographer Michael Kamber includes that the film's numerous verifiable blunders "are simple subtleties contrasted with the manner in which Sergeant James over and over struts up to bombs... [T]he odds of carelessly drawing nearer even a solitary order exploded bomb and enduring are very little. However we are made to accept that Sergeant James has debilitated more than 800 bombs in this foolish, rancher like design." (Yes, yet will the film win the sculpture for Best Sound Mixing?)
The most accursing arraignment of the film, in any case, originates from American-Israeli columnist Caroline Glick. She notes of the film, "There is no plot. We know nothing about these officers. We don't have the foggiest idea why they joined the US Army. We don't have the foggiest idea how they feel about Iraq... All we are given are GI Joes who defuse bombs. Probably by watching them, we should accomplish some more profound comprehension of the war. However all we see is sans setting savagery which shows us nothing war. Evidently James is a legend. Be that as it may, we don't have any thought what he's battling for. So for what reason would it be a good idea for us to think about him?"
So for what reason is "The Hurt Locker" selected for a gazillion Academy Awards? My hypothesis is that the film was made for, and appreciated by, individuals who either (1) think nothing about war, and are interested about what it resembles to be installed in the Army and ready to watch a cut of life in a specific unit, or (2) care nothing about war, and are enchanted to see it portrayed as a pointless, agnostic exercise that outlines the purposelessness of getting arms to battle for one's nation's security advantages.
The previous gathering are not getting a precise portrayal of life in the Army, in any event for this gathering in this contention.
With respect to the last gathering, Glick states, "The Hurt Locker works for them since its post-present day, setting free rendering of the war is a picture-flawless far-left depiction of war. No, the Americans aren't horrendous, they are nothings... War is pointless. There is no reason to war with the exception of remaining alive."
Glick counters this view: "[S]oldiers aren't two-dimensional and war isn't tied in with nothing. Furthermore, the war in Iraq is neither purposeless nor aimless. The Hurt Locker was a two-dimensional film about a good for nothing war and nothing officers."
As such: not all bad for Hollywood war films nowadays.

Dnes byly v New Yorku oznámeny nominace 73. ročníku Tony Awards
Gratulujeme! Hodně nadějí si také dělá záhrobní duchařina, muzikálový Beetlejuice (8). Z revivalové kategorie letos nejspíš žádné velké překvapení nečekejte. Nominace získlaly jen dvě inscenace - Oklahoma! (8) a Kiss Me, Kate! (4).
Z činoherních inscenací se dávají největší šance nejúspěšnější britské hře posledního desetiletí, syrovému dramatu Jeze Butterwortha Ferryman (Převozník) a nové divadelní adaptaci známého románu spisovatelky Harper Leeové To Kill A Mockinbird (Jak zabít ptáčka) v režii vysoce ceněného Bartletta Shera.

Wish for Peace mural, artist: WHAT. Creative Group
4822 Charlotte Ave.
Love Heals Every Body mural, artist: Michael Cooper
5122 Charlotte Ave. (side of The Café at Thistle Farms)
The Nations
The Nations is very much up-and-coming, and this 160-foot-tall portrait of 91-year-old Nashville native Lee Estes painted on an old silo is one of its most famed residents. I love seeing more new businesses are commissioning pieces as a way to bring art lovers to this very hip ‘hood.
Silo mural, artist: Guido van Helten
1407 51st Ave. N
The Nations walls, artists: Mobe Oner, Zidekahedron, Folek
5901 California Ave. (side of Music City Tents & Events)
Beaujolais mural, artist: Chloe Meyer
5026 Centennial Blvd. (on the side of Nicky’s Coal Fired)
Tennessee state outline, artist: WHAT. Creative Group
5012 Centennial Blvd. (on the side of Southern Grist Brewing Co.)
“Play Well” Lego Man mural, artist: forBecks
1400 51st Ave N (front entrance to Frothy Monkey)
Music Row/Midtown
Midtown is getting a pop of color with some new street art painted down alleys and on parking garages. Music Row, which has a protected historic overlay, on the other hand, isn’t exactly brimming with street art, so you have to go in search of fun pieces like this by heading down Roy Acuff Lane on foot. Pro tip: Also grab a photo with the guitar installations outside of Studio B while you’re there.
Elliston Parking Garage, Nashville Walls Project artists: Chris Zidek, Audi Adams, Folek, Chase, Brian Wooden, Tess Erlenborn, Daniel Lane, Mobe, Emily Miller, Nathan Brown.
207 Louise Ave. (across from Cafe Coco)
Hieroglitches mural, artist: Adrien Saporiti

A couple of weeks back, when the UDBS kicked off a series of site visits to look at comparables for RE_CON 01, we visited the Choice Neighborhoods Mixed Income Development in Larimer (this was blogged about by several people). Directly opposite from the Mistick Construction trailer stands this huge church (St. Peter and Paul Church). It is commonly referred to in Pittsburgh as Cardinal Glick’s Saint Michael’s church, featured in the the 1999 feature film DOGMA. Being new to the United States, and to Pittsburgh, this was the first condemned property I had ever seen. Until I saw the church, I considered blight to be a recent phenomena, only impacting buildings constructed within the past few decades. This opened my eyes. Built in 1857, this Catholic Church served East Liberty through the 1980′s, and also supported an adjacent convent.
Over the course of its life span, the structure supported many programs and uses, ultimately being cared for by a male African American Organisation, Operation Dig/Careers Inc. I was told that the church ceased to serve the Catholic Diocese and was decommissioned when the number of parishioners dwindled as population was lost in the city. But, I wonder if it was something more specific to East Liberty. Could the reason for the abandonment of the church have something to do with the neighborhood and U.S. Urban Renewal Policies of the 1960′s and 1970′s that transformed East Liberty? Urban Renewal was responsible for displacing long time residents without adequate compensation in the name of development. While the intentions of Urban Renewal were often intended to create a brighter urban future, we know that the policies had disastrous effects. The fate of this building is in jeopardy. It is a significant civic landmark and represents East Liberty’s past, but it is in very poor shape with no viable use immediately apparent. East Liberty Development Inc. (ELDI) has taken ownership of the property and has invested in stabilizing the structure, but ultimately its fate will reside with use. As a non-profit organization, ELDI cannot sustain the maintenance on a structure of this size if there is no function that benefits the community.

The Queer, Half-Deaf Actor Redefining the Idea of a Leading Man
“He’s a strange little man.” That’s how the New York actor Gideon Glick describes Seymour Krelborn, the menschy, dorky, ultimately murderous antihero of the cult classic musical “Little Shop of Horrors,” whom Glick, 31, is currently playing through March in an Off Broadway revival that runs at the Westside Theater. The production opened in October with the actor Jonathan Groff in the role, but Glick, who was at the time starring as Dill Harris in Aaron Sorkin’s Broadway adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” filled in for two weeks in November when Groff had a conflict. At the end of that temporary stint — during which Glick’s deep skills as one of New York’s best contemporary character actors (namely, his ability to channel his own inherent strangeness, his high voice often cracking, his knees seemingly quaking) were on full, glorious display — the director, Michael Mayer, asked if he wanted to take over the role after Groff finished his contract.
The only downside was that Glick had just one day off after his “Mockingbird” gig ended, and would have to practice puppeteering Audrey II, his human-eating horticultural “Little Shop” co-star that he operates at certain points in the show, during the final days in his Broadway dressing room. (For those unfamiliar, the musical is about a lowly botanist, Seymour, who becomes a local phenomenon after an exotic plant, seemingly from outer space, suddenly enters his life and continues to grow, thanks to its diet of blood proffered by its conflicted caretaker.) Still, Glick could hardly refuse the part, he says while nibbling on a croissant at PlantShed, a suitably on-the-nose cafe and flower shop near his apartment on the Upper West Side. “I had wanted to do ‘Little Shop’ my whole life — I mean, it’s a musical about a man-eating plant! It’s outrageous and it shouldn’t work and yet it completely does.”
It’s hard not to read Glick’s own life story into this statement. He was born, in the suburbs outside Philadelphia, without a right ear — he has microtia and atresia, meaning he’s missing both an outer and inner ear. In first grade, the external parts were constructed from some of his rib cartilage; later on, he received an artificial ear canal and eardrum, but he’s still half-deaf, lacking the intrinsic stereo sound that one might falsely presume is a prerequisite for a leading role in a major musical. Over the last decade, Glick, who is gay, has established his own kind of endearing-but-awkward type by playing gawky, often gay characters in straight plays such as Stephen Karam’s “Speech & Debate” (2008), Samuel H. Hunter’s “The Few” (2014) and Joshua Harmon’s “Significant Other” (2015). He grew up doing musicals in Philadelphia, though he’s rarely auditioned for them since his breakout as a member of the original cast of “Spring Awakening” (2006), which was also directed by Mayer. But Glick had never starred in a New York musical — and didn’t necessarily intend to: “I was nervous that the anxiety and stress of it would maybe make it not worth it, but ‘Little Shop’ was the test of whether I could do it again,” he says. “I’m a nervous person. I’m a nervous singer. And then the hearing element makes it just a lot more daunting.”
It’s kismet, then, or perhaps just plain good casting, that Seymour is one of theater’s most enduring representations of that sort of manic energy. Though the musical has been remounted with varying degrees of success over the years (Seymour often played by an incongruous hunk, notably Jake Gyllenhaal), Mayer’s tightly directed rendition maintains more of the gay-adjacent, camp sensibility — with its doo-wop chorus, B-movie shading and root-for-the-underdog empathy — of the original, created in 1982 by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who would go on to write two similarly sly Disney movies: 1989’s “The Little Mermaid” and 1991’s “Beauty and the Beast.” (That Ashman would die of complications from AIDS in 1991 only makes the play’s blood panic all the more prescient.) Then as now, the “Little Shop” songs are clever earworms. But in the hands of Christian Borle, who plays the sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello, and Tammie Blanchard, who plays Seymour’s down-on-her-luck love interest, Audrey, they take on a blue, mournful quality, with a dark tinge that Glick also harnesses. “As an artist, I benefit from the anxiety,” he says. “It’s in the way Seymour speaks — he’s a meek guy. And then you see him grow in confidence, a confidence rooted in killing people, which is a good psychological study of where we’re at culturally.” Glick reads this two ways: On one hand, thanks in part to the rise of streaming platforms, we’re in the age of cultural reboots (there’s also a movie remake of “Little Shop of Horrors,” directed by Greg Berlanti, in the works). And while the actor is loathe to oversell the political implications of a musical comedy about a carnivorous plant, he’s not not thinking about it: “The show’s about making a deal with the devil,” he adds. “In a way, I feel our country’s made a deal with the devil.”

Still, “Little Shop” is perhaps best known today as a relic, particularly the 1986 movie musical, in which Seymour was played, appropriately, by Rick Moranis (and the ending was changed, inappropriately, to be more uplifting). Yet the play’s innate intimacy and winking, satirical style — actors literally climb into a giant, cartoon-green, oversize plant puppet when they’re “eaten” — benefits from its new, smaller stage. It was Ashman who reportedly said that he didn’t want “Little Shop” to move from its Off Broadway home, the Orpheum in the East Village, where it played for more than 2,000 performances, to a larger, glitzier Broadway venue. It’s easy to see why when sitting in one of the Westside’s 270 seats, the actors mugging in close range, the Skid Row sets intentionally shabby, the fake blood taking on the endearing, barely scary quality of a 1980s science-fiction film. Indeed, the new “Little Shop” works so well because it conjures an earlier age, those punk days that preceded our current era of polish and perfection, when roughness was built into the culture, when you went to the theater to see what worked — and also what needed work, fully aware that something could go wrong, and knowing that such spontaneity might resonate, too. Glick, in his own way, embodies that throwback spirit. “I’ve always thought of myself as a folk artist, a self-taught artist,” he says. “Maybe rough around the edges, but hopefully there’s something in the core that strikes people.”

‘Salem’s Lot
by Stephen King
King, S. (2003). ‘Salem's Lot. New York, NY: Anchor Books. (Originally published in 1975). ISBN-13: 978-0345806796; paperback; $12.00
🔥🔥🔥🔥
“The town kept its secrets, and the Marsten House brooded over it like a ruined king.” (King, 2003, p. 635).
What is ‘Salem’s Lot? This novel takes you back to 1975, Jerusalem’s Lot, a small town twenty miles north of Portland, Maine; total population 1,319. It has been twenty-five years since Ben Mears, a well-known writer, has stepped foot in Jerusalem’s Lot and his reasons for returning have to do with an old mansion, the Marsten House, confronting past demons, and hopefully finding the much-needed inspiration to write his new book. Things get off to a good start when Ben meets Susan Norton, a recent college graduate, fan of his work, and “the prettiest girl in the park.” However, things quickly take a turn for the worse after a mysterious outsider named Barlow and his creepy, bald-headed partner, Straker, purchase the Marsten House. First, little Ralphie Glick goes missing while roaming through the woods with his older brother Danny. Next, something evil happens to Danny, and from there, the darkness spreads throughout the town. When Ben starts to suspect the new residents of the Marsten House are to blame he teams up with Susan, his love interest; Matt Burke, a sixty-three-year-old English teacher; Jimmy Cody, Matt’s doctor (why not?); Father Callahan, a local Irish priest (always necessary when fighting demons); and Mark Petrie, a 12-year-old smart kid who loves monsters. Will Ben and his allies be able to stop the evil forces before it turns into a ghost town, or ‘salem’s lot?
‘Salem’s Lot was Stephen King’s second published novel and it introduces themes and characters that he would continue to develop throughout his career, including writing about struggling famous writers; smart and strong kids and teens; battles between good and evil; and the imminent darkness that surrounds us all. King is a literary icon and master storyteller when it comes to horror and suspense, and ‘Salem’s Lot does not disappoint; reawakening your childhood nightmares of monsters and vampires through descriptive prose. I give suspense-filled horror novel a LIT-rating of four out of five and I recommend it for readers ages 13+. Please note: ‘Salem’s Lot was originally published in 1975 and there is some use of pejorative language. (653 pages)
Awards and accolades: 1976 World Fantasy Award nominee; 1978 ALA Best Books for Young Adults; in 1979 it was adapted into a two-part miniseries that was nominated for three primetime Emmys and an Edgar Award.

SEC HALTS FRAUD TARGETING SENIORS
As a securities lawyer, it’s fun to see the changes that are announced from time to time by the SEC. For example, they recently announced an emergency asset freeze and temporary restraining order against a Utah-based investment adviser and his financial management company accused of scamming elderly investors out of millions of dollars.
The SEC alleges that Daniel H. Glick and his unregistered investment advisory firm Financial Management Strategies (FMS) provided clients with false account statements to hide Glick’s use of client funds to pay personal and business expenses, purchase a Mercedes-Benz, and pay off loans and debts among other misuses.
According to the SEC’s complaint, Glick was barred by FINRA in 2014 and had his Certified Financial Planner designation and Certified Public Accountant license revoked for conduct unrelated to today’s SEC charges.

“As alleged in our complaint, Daniel Glick raised millions of dollars from elderly clients by claiming that he would pay their bills, handle their taxes, and invest on their behalf. In reality, Daniel Glick used much of their money to do what was best for Daniel Glick,” said David Glockner.
The SEC’s complaint also names Glick Accounting Services, Glick’s business partner David B. Slagter, and Glick’s business acquaintance Edward H. Forte as relief defendants for the purposes of recovering client funds that Glick transferred or paid them in the form of advances or loans.
The court issued a temporary restraining order against Glick and FMS at the SEC’s request, and issued an order freezing the assets of Glick, FMS, and Glick Accounting Services.
The SEC encourages investors to check the background of anyone offering to sell them investments.
SEC HALTS BOILER ROOM SCHEME INVOLVING STATE LOTTERY TICKETS
The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced charges against a Utah-based company, its CEO, and its top sales agent accused of conducting a boiler room scheme that solicits investments in a business purportedly facilitating online and cell phone sales of lottery tickets in various states.
The SEC has obtained an emergency court order freezing the assets of LottoNet Operating Corp., David Gray, and Joseph A. Vitale. The SEC’s complaint alleges that they misrepresented to investors that their money would be used to develop and market LottoNet and that sales agents did not receive commissions. At least 35 percent of investor proceeds were allegedly paid to boiler room sales agents in the form of commissions, and LottoNet allegedly siphoned investor funds for personal spending on clothing, wedding-related expenses, and strip clubs.
According to the SEC’s complaint, which was unsealed in federal court today, among the pitches used in sales agent scripts prepared for cold calls to investors was “you’re looking at a monthly dividend payout of $8,500 every month” on a $25,000 investment if LottoNet reaches 1 percent market share. The scripts also allegedly touted the purported safety of the investment, noting a 60 percent return as a “worst case” scenario if the company was ever sold. The SEC alleges that while LottoNet has raised a total of approximately $4.8 million from investors, the company had only paid $10,525.43 in investment returns to investors through the end of February. Sales agents allegedly have been paid more than $1.1 million out of investor funds.

The SEC’s complaint further alleges that Vitale, who personally raised at least $1.4 million from investors, used the alias Donovan Kelly in an apparent attempt to hide from investors that he is permanently barred by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).
“As alleged in our complaint, little did investors know they were being duped with a script based on misrepresentations while investor funds were being spent in strip clubs,” said Eric I. Bustillo.
TELECOM EXECUTIVES AGREE TO PAY PENALTIES FOR FCPA VIOLATIONS
The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that two former executives at Hungarian-based telecommunications company Magyar Telekom have agreed to pay financial penalties and accept officer-and-director bars to settle a previously-filed SEC case alleging they violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).
Magyar Telekom paid a $95 million penalty in December 2011 to settle parallel civil and criminal charges that the company bribed officials in Macedonia and Montenegro to win business and shut out competition in the telecommunications industry says local business lawyers. The SEC’s complaint also charged the company’s former CEO Elek Straub and former chief strategy officer Andras Balogh with orchestrating the use of sham contracts to funnel millions of dollars in corrupt payments. The two executives were set to stand trial this month.
Straub has agreed to pay a $250,000 penalty and Balogh has agreed to pay a $150,000 penalty. Both executives agreed to a five-year bar from serving as an officer or director of any SEC-registered public company. The settlements are subject to court approval.
“The executives in this case were charged with spearheading secret agreements with a prime minister and others to block out telecom competitors,” said Stephanie Avakian, Acting Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement. “We persevered in order to hold these overseas executives culpable for corrupting a company that traded in the U.S. market.”
A third Magyar Telekom executive charged in the SEC’s complaint, former director of business development and acquisitions Tamas Morvai, agreed to a settlement that was approved by the court in February requiring him to pay a $60,000 penalty for falsifying the company’s books and records in connection with the bribery scheme.
