MY LAI a poem by Michael Paul (1074)
Tumblr media
youtube
My Lai,
What have you become?
Is it an American soldier turned
A genocidal Zionist.
Is it NATO'S bombing of Yugoslavia.
With a roar that can still be heard.
And more LUST for blood in Libya.
With the laughter of a women's
menstrual blood upon them.
Allied to the self immolation of Ukraine
With teeth that chew like cannibalistic swastikas.
Bloodied in Dracula's phallic orgy
Raping Irak and Afghanistan.
Trodding on the intestines of Syria.
You (U.S.A.) are taking us to the hell you are creating,
in the image and likeness of My Lai.
Is it the coagulated blood you sperm into gold?
For the few Capitalist pigs who thrive on it
Served by your politicians.
My Lai is your soul that you want to turn the world into.
The American My Lai Pie.

Microcosm and Macrocosm (by Michael Paul)
Microcosm & Macrocosm
In the blue glow of my computer screen I ponder whether Christ’s countenance is dour or smiling? In my milieu there are these: A bit of credit debt Broken appliances Chores undone
those the abc’s, with a soupcon of questionable friendships gone sour - furballs and pawprints and droolmarks - (the cost of parenting a pooch) but mostly I know equanimity, if not joy, at least until my digital window on the wider world shows the hallelujahs of a world cup fan
parenthesized by a bloody picture of a dead Palestinian baby by pictures of starving kennel dogs
skinny as Auschwitz survivors.
I looked, four years ago, at media depicting The Bigger Picture, and my heart got broken

So now I wonder if I should take down the graven image of the Smiling Saviour culled from an ancient Playboy and placed on our ‘family altar’ in light of this live broadcast:
400 children die of starvation 3700 acres of forests are felled 194,063,927 dollars are spent on armies
every hour of every day twenty four seven three hundred sixty five days year after year

the mind swirls now like the plastic polluted gyre (the size of Texas squared) in the ocean I grew up next to

Going now to Google a solemn Saviour
© by Michael Paul
About the Poem:
1. How long have you been writing poetry? I began in earnest 18 years ago, during the April 1996 inauguration of National Poetry Month, with my first publication, my first little award, and my first invitation to be a ‘featured reader’ at a poetry venue.
2. Who are some of your favorite poet(s) and poem(s)? I like so many poets, it’s hard to narrow down, but I’m particularly drawn to modern surrealists like Dean Young and Matthew Rohrer and their ilk. But I’m all over the place appreciation-wise. What I need to catch up on are the old-timers, the classical guys. As far as favorites, I was tickled to find out that the first poem I ever memorized was the same one as Wanda Coleman – it was Lewis Carroll’s ‘Jabberwocky.’ I think we were both fascinated with what one could do with language.
3. What draws you to poetry? What is your reason for writing poetry? Good poetry, for me, is like a doorway into another realm. It is a powerful art form, so much emotional punch in so little text. I write poems to celebrate, to elegize, or just to revel in the sheer music of language. I agree with Donald Hall, though, poetry is a means to say the ‘unsayable.’
4. Tell us the inspiration behind this particular piece. Exposure to media about the rampant social and environmental injustices taking place on the planet have done a number on me. This piece was inspired by the contrast between my comfortable and contented life and the horrendous things taking place daily, hourly, moment by moment in the world. It was an attempt at a kind of ‘wake up call.’
About Michael Paul:
Michael Paul is the author of six chapbooks from three small presses and a perfect bound collection from Lummox Press of Southern California, all of which have been critically well received. His work has appeared in a number of journals and anthologies such as Blue Satellite, Pearl, Spillway, The Valley Contemporary Poets, FTS, Dufus, Silver Birch Press and others. Michael has performed his poems at numerous venues including the Los Angeles Poetry Festival, the Orange County Poetry Festival, and Beyond Baroque. Michael has workshopped his craft with the likes of Thomas Lux, Patricia Smith, Amy Gerstler and many others. He has also written for newspapers and online blogs. Michael currently lives in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California with his wife Claudia Licht. He is the father of two and the grandfather of five children.
