"As solar panels heat up beyond 25°C, their efficiency decreases markedly. Green roofs moderate rooftop temperatures. So we wanted to find out: could green roofs help with the problem of heat reducing the output of solar panels?
Our research compared a “biosolar” green roof — one that combines a solar system with a green roof — and a comparable conventional roof with an equivalent solar system. We measured the impacts on biodiversity and solar output, as well as how the plants coped with having panels installed above them.
The green roof supported much more biodiversity, as one might expect. By reducing average maximum temperatures by about 8°C, it increased solar generation by as much as 107% during peak periods. And while some plant species outperformed others, the vegetation flourished.
These results show we don’t have to choose between a green roof or a solar roof: we can combine the two and reap double the rewards...
How did the panels affect the plants?
In the open areas, we observed minimal changes in the vegetation cover over the study period compared to the initial planted community.
Plant growth was fastest and healthiest in the areas immediately around the solar panels. Several species doubled in coverage. We selected fast-growing vegetation for this section to achieve full coverage of the green roof beds as soon as possible.
The vegetation changed the most in the areas directly below and surrounding the solar panels. The Baby Sun Rose, Aptenia cordifolia, emerged as the dominant plant. It occupied most of the space beneath and surrounding the solar panels, despite having been planted in relatively low densities.
This was surprising: it was not expected the plants would prefer the shaded areas under the panels to the open areas. This shows that shading by solar panels will not prevent the growth of full and healthy roof gardens.
What were the biodiversity impacts?
We used environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys to compare biodiversity on the green roof and conventional roof. Water run-off samples were collected from both roofs and processed on site using portable citizen scientist eDNA sampling equipment to detect traces of DNA shed by the species on the roof.
The eDNA surveys detected a diverse range of species. These included some species (such as algae and fungi) that are not easily detected using other survey methods. The results confirmed the presence of bird species recorded by the cameras but also showed other visiting bird species went undetected by the cameras.
Overall, the green roof supported four times as many species of birds, over seven times as many arthropods such as insects, spiders and millipedes, and twice as many snail and slug species as the conventional roof. There was many times the diversity of microorganisms such as algae and fungi.
Encouragingly, the green roof attracted species unexpected in the city. They included blue-banded bees (Amegilla cingulata) and metallic shield bugs (Scutiphora pedicellata).
How did the green roof alter temperatures?
The green roof reduced surface temperatures by up to 9.63°C for the solar panels and 6.93°C for the roof surfaces. An 8°C reduction in average peak temperature on the green roof would result in substantial heating and cooling energy savings inside the building.
This lowering of temperatures increased the maximum output of the solar panels by 21-107%, depending on the month. Performance modelling indicates an extensive green roof in central Sydney can, on average, produce 4.5% more electricity at any given light level.
These results show we don’t have to choose between a green roof or a solar roof. We can combine them to take advantage of the many benefits of biosolar green roofs.
Biosolar roofs can help get cities to net zero
The next step is to design green roofs and their plantings specifically to enhance biodiversity. Green roofs and other green infrastructure may alter urban wildlife’s activities and could eventually attract non-urban species.
Our green roof also decreased stormwater runoff, removed a range of run-off pollutants and insulated the building from extremes of temperature. A relatively inexpensive system provides all of these services with moderate maintenance and, best of all, zero energy inputs.
Clearly, biosolar green roofs could make major contributions to net-zero cities. And all that’s needed is space that currently has no other use."

If you're still doing the prompts, #8 “Looks like we’ll be trapped for a while…”
8. "Looks like we'll be trapped for awhile..."
"Shit."
They were pulled over on the side of the road, staring through the windshield at the torrential downpour that was beating down on the road, small pellets of water dinging methodically against the thick metal roof of the van.
The van. Chrissy couldn't believe he still had it. That it was still running.
"Well. Christ. Y'know, Sheila's fucking incredible, but she's not making it through this," Eddie said, gesturing out the window. "Unfortunately I, uh, haven't had time to, like, install an emergency flotation device or anything."
Despite herself – despite the circumstances – Chrissy couldn't help the giggle that bubbled up from her chest.
"No, I suppose you've probably been pretty busy," Chrissy supplied around a grin. "All that time spent being a rockstar."
"Hey!" Eddie yelped, turning toward her and pointing a finger in her face that she desperately wanted to bite. "I prefer rock artist." Chrissy snorted, making Eddie grin broadly. "Besides. We haven't, y'know, hit it that big."
"Oh, bullshit." Chrissy rolled her eyes. "I'm sitting next to a guy who just opened for Pantera. Pantera. And you haven't 'hit it that big'? Please."
"Yeah, but Pantera is the band that opened for Metallica, so really we were the opening band of the opening band," Eddie corrected. "There's a difference."
"It was a metal festival."
"I digress!"
"I'm not used to you being so humble."
"Yeah, well," Eddie shrugged. "It's, uh. It's been awhile, hasn't it, Cunningham?"
That stung. An old hurt, immediately flaming back to life. Like dying embers that just need the slightest breeze to erupt back into the inferno they once were. Destructive and terrible and beautiful.
Because all that hurt, all that pain, it was beautiful. It reminded her, every time she poked the bruise in an attempt to sustain the ache, just how much they loved each other.
How much she loves him still.
"We just talked on the phone a week ago," she reminded him, like he didn't know. It was their conversation that had her at his show that night, the promise of tickets and backstage passes trying to tempt her into watching him perform.
Like she hadn't already bought her own tickets months prior. Tickets she'd sold (and made a slight profit off of, which she hasn't told Eddie yet, but she knows he'll be so proud.)
"Phone calls don't do all of my personal growth justice!" Eddie fired back, unbuckling his seatbelt and turning more fully toward her. "So, uh. Looks like we're gonna be trapped for awhile... You're, y'know, more than welcome to hang out up here, but I'm gonna stretch out in back, lest my knees try and revolt against me."
Chrissy laughed, unbuckling her own seatbelt and watching as Eddie awkwardly finagled his way between the front seats, tumbling into the back with a grunt and nearly kicking the gear shift. Shrieking, Chrissy slipped between the seats herself to make sure he was alright. Once she verified that he did not, in fact, give himself a concussion (again), she took stock of the back hatch of his old van with a fondness that seemed desperate to rip itself out of her chest. To slink across the space between them and reclaim its home beside his heart.
A home it no longer had access to.
"No gear?"
"Nah," Eddie shrugged, reaching behind a gray lidded tote and producing a veritable nest of blankets and pillows. "Guys have space for that shit on the tour bus."
"How come you're not on the tour bus?" Chrissy asked, watching raptly as Eddie began arranging the mountain of cotton into something more comfortable.
Eddie laughed, glancing over his shoulder at her like he couldn't believe her question. "Because I knew I'd be driving you home, Cunningham. You don't like to drive at night." He punctuated his statement with a little duh like those sixteen words, strung together in that way, hadn't ripped the heart straight from her chest.
Unbidden tears sprang into her eyes that Chrissy tried desperately to blink away. It didn't mean anything. It didn't. Because it couldn't. Because, despite the fact that she was completely, hopelessly in love with him, he'd left to go on tour nearly two years ago, and they'd mutually ended their relationship. She couldn't go with him – she was in her junior year of college, buried up to her neck in homework and projects and research, and Eddie was just beginning to make the name for himself that he'd always deserved.
She wouldn't hold him back from his dreams. And she knew, if she'd asked him to stay back then, he would have.
He would have done anything for her.
But she couldn't let him ruin that chance to taste the life he'd been dreaming about since long before he met her. Even if the three years they spent together were the absolute best, most happiest of her life, and she'd basically been a walking scarecrow since – but instead of searching for a brain, she'd been on the hunt for the heart he'd unintentionally packed away in his guitar case.
"Whoa, hey, Cunningham, you alright?" Eddie asked worriedly, immediately clocking the change in her demeanor. He was always so fucking good at that. At looking at her and just... knowing.
It was how they got together in the first place.
Eddie had never put on some big display for her. He'd never announced to their entire school that he loved her, never shown up at her home with dozens and dozens of roses and proclaimed his affection in front of her parents, like the boy she'd been dating before him.
As dramatic and insane and impulsive as he could be, Eddie always loved her subtly. Quietly, warmly, wholly. Fitting around her shoulders like a favorite sweater. Filling her like a favorite meal, relaxing her like a bath with her favorite soaps and oils.
He was her favorite everything.
And then he was gone.
He still called. In the beginning, it was nearly every night. Telling her how crazy and wild it was out on the road. How the record label had them in various recording studios in whatever city they were playing, putting together a second album as they toured their first. But the long distance fees stacked up quick, and they'd shaved their calls down to once a week.
It had maintained them for the last two years.
It would never be enough.
"I'm fine," she lied, giving him the best grin she could muster. Eddie looked at her, saw her, like her skin was made of glass and he could see right down to the very soul buried beneath sinew and bone. The one that still hummed a steady song that sounded suspiciously like his name.
He was quiet for a long, drawn minute, finishing his primping of the little blanket bed he'd built before turning fully toward her. Studying her appraisingly, like the outfit she'd picked out just for him and his show had been discarded out the window miles ago.
"I thought we didn't do that."
"Do what?"
"Lie to each other."
Chrissy couldn't help it – she laughed. She laughed long, and hard, and so much that she didn't even realize her laughter had turned into sobbing until she was wrapped in his arms and resting fully in the blanket nest.
Because they didn't. They didn't lie to each other – ever. That was one of the unspoken rules they'd established at the beginning of their relationship, when Eddie realized just how much she'd been hiding under plastic smiles and makeup and mental shields made of rusted metal and nails.
They didn't lie to each other.
Except she'd been lying to him every single day for the last eight hundred and sixty three days, because she'd spent every single second of every single minute pretending she didn't miss him with every fiber of her being.
"I-I-I tried, Eddie, I tried," she wailed, burying her face in the familiarity of his neck. Picking up the sweat and spice that always accompanied him after a show, each inhale making her heart flutter valiantly in her chest. "You said we'd b-be friends. You said to move on and be happy and I tried, I swear, but the–– God, Eddie, I went on one date, and he tried to kiss me at the end, and I almost threw up all over his nice loafers!"
A chuckle that reverberated from her crown where his lips were pressed and echoed through the hollow caverns of her bones, filling her with a tiny droplet of the fountain of joy she'd once known.
Back when she was his.
"I mean, your first mistake was going out with someone who wore loafers."
"Eddie."
"I mean, jeez, sweetness, I thought I taught you more self respect than that."
Oh, God, that pet name. It tore at the tiny shreds of her that still remained, sinking claws into the curves and valleys of her flesh that she was just beginning to recognize in the mirror again.
But, even despite his jesting, she could feel the way his arms tightened around her. The way his breathing picked up, his shoulders hitching and relaxing as he buried his face in her hair.
"Me, too," he said.
"What?"
"I tried, too." His voice was just next to her ear. Muffled by the rain still beating away outside and the position of his lips against her skull. "Couple times. Even invited one girl out on a second date. But. It was like, the moment any of them tried to touch me, I wanted to jump out of my own skin, and then launch that skin out the goddamn window." He shrugged, fingertips digging into the cage of her ribs like he could embed his fingerprints straight into her flesh. Tattoo a part of him on her. "I guess, I dunno. Once you taste perfection, how are you ever supposed to get a hit anywhere else, right?"
The tears hadn't stopped, but they'd slowed some. Falling down her cheeks in a gentle drizzle, instead of trying to outmatch the downpour outside the van. Chrissy turned, climbing to her knees and bracketing them outside of his hips. Resting in his lap and holding him with all the might he held her.
"I missed you," she breathed, her lips gliding against his neck. "I missed you, and I miss you, and I'm gonna miss you so much when you leave tomorrow."
The wet of his tears dripped against her shoulder, and Chrissy just held him tighter.
"What if I didn't go?" he rasped, his voice as broken as the splintered edges of her body where he fit so perfectly, once upon a time. "What if I just stayed?"
"But it's your dream––"
"It was my dream," he corrected. "It really, really was. And then I lived it, and you... Christ. Everything was so fucking dull when you weren't there, sweetness. Like, how am I supposed to see the glamorous color of fame when my entire fucking life has been black and white since I left you here?"
Chrissy understood all too well what he meant.
So often, so many times, she'd considered dropping out of school just to follow him on his tour. And then, when she'd graduated, the clear absence of Eddie in the crowd had completely eclipsed her excitement of holding her degree. She'd gone home to the dingy studio apartment – the apartment they'd shared, once upon a time. The apartment she couldn't bring herself to leave. And she'd ordered herself a pizza with all of Eddie's favorite toppings, like that might convince some part of her that he was still around.
And now she was doing it. She was living her own dream of editing novels, having worked hard to get a promotion from an intern doing magazine editorials. And she loved it. She loved her work, the care and concentration that went into it. The open line of communication to her authors, the relationships she'd established in her short year.
But it was still empty.
Empty enough that the next words that came from her mouth, though spoken outside of thought, seemed unbearably right.
"What if I came with you?"
Beneath her, around her, Eddie stiffened. Fingers digging hard enough into her sides that she hoped desperately he left bruises. Slowly, ever so slowly, he moved back, blinking up at her in the dim, wavering light of the streetlamp they were parked beneath and giving her the most earnest, beseeching look she'd ever seen.
"What?"
"What if I came with you?" she repeated. "I... I mean, I think I could. I think I could get them to mail my projects to wherever we were staying. I... And, even if they can't, I mean... What if I did anyway?"
"I won't let you throw your life away––"
"I'm not," Chrissy protested immediately. "I'm absolutely not. This is my choice, Eddie. Mine." A moment of hesitation, of self-doubt, and Chrissy stuttered, "O-Only if you, um. Only if you want me, though."
Eddie's forehead fell against hers as a laugh burst from his throat, kissing its way across her lips and reminding her of every single thing she'd spent the last two years missing. The last two years craving. And hoping and praying for. And desperately, desperately needing.
"Sweetness," he murmured, one of his hands gently cupping her cheek. "There's not a goddamn universe in existence where I don't want you."
And then––
He kissed her.
And it tasted every single moment of the future she didn't know she'd been striving toward.

holy shit this is long... tldr; I get neurodivergent over masonry
So I've been doing a lot of research on building methods, from the conventional to the old school to the new, and one thing I always found missing from older methods (as in basically anything that isn't either solid concrete or stick-frame) was the lack of hard, impassable moisture barriers on exterior walls. Surely a wall that looks like old red brick on the outside and inside must have more layers in between, right? Where's the housewrap? Where's the bitumen or tar paper? Pretty much all old-school roof materials I've seen have had some sort of waterproof layer under the shingles, but never the walls, floors nor foundations themselves.
Now, I live in a town with a lot of 100 year old buildings, which isn't that old but still predates the prevalence of the 2x4 and the popularization of plastic. I've been in many buildings where the walls on the inside are seemingly the same clay brick material as the ones on the inside. My grandma's basement was seemingly made from assorted stone, and I've seen many basements with walls of brick or cinderblock. Despite the inherent porosity of their materials, these walls hold strong through the harsh Canadian winters and the soggy spring thaw, the wood and plaster up against them free from water damage or mold. It felt impossible. Surely there was something I wasn't seeing, right? Surely you can't just build a 2-whyte brick wall with an air gap in between and some drainage holes and just have it work, right? Where's the mould? Where's the mildew? Where's the water damage, and crumbling from repeated freeze-and-thaw cycles?
I was unable to find a straight answer, despite the fact that I was obviously missing something. You can't just stick insulation, plasterboard and framing joists up against a brick wall that's exposed to outside air on the other side, right? Surely it will rot!
The only things I was able to find were synthetic sealing creams that make things hydrophobic, and something about a metal "dimple sheet" that required you to "decouple" the roof joists from the walls to install it, because it was simply assumed that you'd be installing the product in a preexisting brick house. Both of these things were obviously modern, and heavily flawed as products. The sealants needed reapplied every 5 years and didn't even provide full protection, and the metal sheet, once installed, required that no wood any longer touch the bricks as it would somehow become guaranteed to rot. This isn't even what I wanted to know. How did people 100 years ago build the buildings I know I've stood in, where the bricks were free from chemical sealants and physical moisture barriers yet didn't let the rain in?
Finally, after posting to a masonry forum, I recieved my answer.
There is no secret ingredient.
The exterior layer of bricks simply get wet when it's wet and dry out when it's dry.
Limestone is naturally antifungal and antibacterial, so mold simply cannot grow on materials made from it. Lime plaster allows water vapour to pass through it, yet resists actual liquid water, so at once water cannot become trapped within it and fester, but applying a lime stucco to exterior walls or a plaster to interior ones prevents leakage while allowing water vapour in the air to pass through, and thus the house to "breathe." Additionally, old insulation "fluff" that is now made from foam or fibreglass was then made from wool, which is also naturally antibacterial. And wood, of course, can simply be sealed to prevent decay with a multitude of different methods, if that's even needed, which it often isn't unless it's actually touching a surface that can be expected to routinely become moist.
Old buildings simply weren't built with absolute airtightness in mind. There's no one layer that's 100% moistureproof in an old exterior wall; even water repellant surfaces such as lime stucco allow humidity to pass through. There's no hydrophobic layer of tarpuline, rubber or tar anywhere but on the roof.
Dudes, I'm starting to realize that modern stick-framed housing insulated with pink fiberglass and made of pine, chipboard and plastic wrap... kind of sucks? Like, they have their advantages surely, they're immensely easier, quicker and cheaper to build, and way easier to heat/cool, but they're also flimsy and, quite ironically, actually MORE prone to mold than old school buildings, because once the housewrap under that vinyl siding, stone block veneer or board-and-batten starts to go (and it will eventually), it's a single point of failure, and everything behind it is prone to rot? And if moisture does seep in, it has no way to escape due to the moisture-tight, airtight quality of the home, so it has no choice but to fester? Like, think about taking a hot shower, and the steam that builds up, only removable from the home with a modern HVAC fan or by opening a window. Think about how, if you don't do one of those things, you're all but certain to get mold on the drywall. That's because of the lack of vapour-permeable materials! It simply can't pass though any exterior wall, back outside into the air! The air is stagnant by default!
And look, this is not me claiming that stick-frame is inherently bad, or that old style building methods are always better. Back then they put asbestos in the walls and lead in the pipes, paint and windows. Technology has moved forward, not back, and is continuing to move forward, becoming better, stronger, more efficient. But when the modern home uses housewrap and housewrap alone as waterproofing, it's hubris manifest. It's a sheet of plastic screwed to some plywood with a wide washer. Eventually, there will be a leak, inside or out, and once that happens you're all but guaranteed destructive rot and mold. It's a tradeoff, exchanging durability and ease of maintainence for cheaper construction and better insulation, and sometimes that's justifiable, but nowadays it seems to be the only option in all of suburbia.
Limestone is a great material. It has a variety of uses, it's abundant, it's simultaneously water resistant and breatheable, it prevents mold, and it can even self-heal from minor damage. Clay and stone may be porous, but they're strong. These materials have their downsides, but they're not inferior. Pretty much no material is (except for fucking cordwood, which just plainly sucks ass in 95% of situations). Logs and timber have a place. Concrete has a place. Steel and other metals have a place. Plastic has a place. So long as it's not toxic, it has a place. There is no one best way to build a building, just as there is no one best way to cook a meal; it depends on where you are and who you're serving it to.
And now that I understand the simple genius of lime mortar and stone or clay blocks, I feel bad that they're not really used in the mainstream anymore. Sometimes, it's better to accept that moisture exists and have a multi-faceted system for directing it away from decay-prone materials, rather than to try to "defeat" it entirely with the modern miracle material of plastic, and then cockily build everything behind the plastic out of rottable materials. No home can go forever without repairs, just as no person, tool or machine can. The question is whether there's any redundancy, or if one failure in a crucial area destroys the whole system.
I've always loved masonry aesthetically, and now I love it functionally as well. This world has so many wonderful things in it.

The Scientific Method
Part 1 Part 2
Part 3 Part 4
Part 5 Part 6
Part 7 Part 8
Part 9
She went back to her hiding spot and waited for the door to appear again. She prayed that it would, and that Daniel would come walking out of it.
John was strapped to a round apparatus in the center of the lair of the Strangers when Daniel appeared, walking slowly, his body encased in a medievalesque torture device, an iron cage wrapped around him with limited space to move his head and legs. He was unable to take more than one tiny step at a time.
“It is time for our experiment to move into a final phase. We no longer need the other subjects. The time for study is over. It is time to be one with John Murdoch,” Mister Book announced to the crowd of Strangers surrounding the center of the room. “The time has come, Doctor. Imprint,” he commanded. He handed Daniel a syringe filled with black ichor.
Daniel slowly approached John, the syringe in hand. He had a plan, one last chance to save the City, to save Kat. He strapped John’s head to the “table” with a rubber strap to keep him still.
“What are you doing?” asked John.
“They want to imprint you with their own collective memories. They want to make you one of them, so they can share your soul.” As Daniel spoke, his free hand snaked into the breast pocket of John’s jacket, removing the syringe he had stored there at the bathhouse.
“I’m sorry, John. The pain will only last a moment.”
“No.” John croaked.
Daniel drove the needle into the center of John’s forehead, penetrating the skull and injecting the syringe’s contents directly into his frontal lobe. Memories flooded John’s mind, but they’d been tampered with, altered somehow. Daniel’s visage appeared in many of them, giving him a lifetime of memories in which he harnessed his power, understood it, and understood his task: to destroy the Strangers. He finally knew everything that Daniel had been trying so desperately to make him understand. John had the power to make anything happen in this place, and was the only one who could take on the Strangers.
“Remember, John. Remember,” whispered Daniel, watching as John’s eyes rolled back into his head, as he absorbed a lifetime of knowledge from a single syringe. John’s eyes opened, flashing silver as he harnessed his power to free himself, the machine he was strapped to melting into the metal of the floor. Daniel was freed as well, falling to the floor as his restraints suffered the same fate.
John and Mister Book were pitted against each other and destruction ensued. Daniel ran, he had to get to Kat, had to get out of this place. He rushed over the catwalks installed throughout the cavernous room to get to the surface. The roof was caving in and he concentrated on avoiding getting crushed by debris as he was thrown upward by the extreme force of John’s psychic ability. He landed on a crushed car, rolling into a pile of broken stone and brick.
As the two titans clashed he rushed through the alley, frantically searching for Kat. He knew she’d followed them to the Strangers’ lair, she was too stubborn not to. He found her in a corner, curled into a ball and shielding her head with her arms. He pulled her to her feet and dragged her behind him to a safer location, one further away from the destruction. He pushed her behind him, her body pressed against his back, her back to the corner of two buildings. She continued to shield her head as Daniel watched the altercation between the two psychic powerhouses.
The destruction was phenomenal, akin to a natural disaster. Buildings toppled and crushed cars, thick dust choked the air, and the mayhem resulted in the destruction of a large water tower, flooding the area.
The water soaked Mister Book along with an entire city block, destroying the corpse driving creature, and flooding the remnants of the lair of the Strangers, eradicating any that hadn’t yet expired due to the severing of their psychic link with their leader.
Daniel watched it all in awe, Kats hand clutched tightly in his own as they watched the jellyfish-like creature emerge from the head of Mr. Book, dissolving into an ash-like substance and being washed away.
He turned to Kat, frantically checking for injuries now that the danger had passed and the last of the debris had fallen.
“Kat, are you okay? Are you hurt?”
“I’m okay, Daniel. Are you okay? What happened in there?”
“I’ll be fine. I guess their fear of water was justified,” muttered Daniel with a small snicker. “I’ll explain everything later.”
She pulled him into a tight embrace.
“I was so scared I’d lose you,” she said.
“Me too, I don’t know what I would have done if anything had happened to you,” he told her. “Kat, I… I didn’t tell you before because I was scared of what you might say, but…” he paused, forming his words carefully. “Earlier I told John that the only place home existed was in his head. That might be true for him, but my home is standing right in front of me. I might have a weak heart, Kat, but it’s been yours since you walked through that door of my office.”
She smiled, grabbing his collar and pulling him into a deep kiss.
“I love you, too, Daniel. So much,” she told him.
They watched together as John lowered himself, landing safely on the ground. They turned to look at him. He held Kat close as he spoke.
“I knew you could do it, John. You have their power now. You control their machines. What are you going to do now, John?” asked Daniel.
“You told me I had the power. I can make these machines do anything I want. Make this world anything I want it to be, as long as I concentrate hard enough.” He turned from Daniel and Kat, his eyes flashing silver. They heard the sound of vast amounts of water gushing from the machines below, the roar not sounding as if it would stop anytime soon. They could smell the saltwater as it spread below them, surrounding the City, forming an ocean. He really could control their machines. John turned to leave.
“Where are you going?” Daniel asked him.
“Shell Beach,” he responded without turning around. As he walked away, the City seemed to repair itself, the buildings and cars returned to their previous states as he passed them.
As the sun rose on the City for the first time, Kat and Daniel turned to each other, their hands entwined.
“Let’s go home,” she said.
He kissed her again and smiled.
A HUGE thanks to my friends @stinkyhorsebitch and @blue-eyes-broken-heart for reading over my work and giving me advice and some ideas! <3 you guys!
And thank you to anyone who read this far, I appreciate it so so much!

Rainwater Harvesting
In the City of San Diego seasonal rainfall averages about ten inches near the coast. Some recent drought years brought only three to six inches of rain. Eight-five percent of the rainfall occurs from November to March.
Tropical Storm Hilary brought an unexpected deluge in August. Anticipating this, we deployed thirteen rain barrels, checked the gutters and made sure all the connections for the rain tanks were functional.
There’s nothing like rainwater. Garden plants and weeds seem to prefer it. Collection methods can be simple and low tech. We chose plastic trash cans that catch the runoff from our 400 square foot metal garage roof. Here’s the math for 1 inch of rain: 10 cups/sq. ft x 400 square feet = 4000 cups or 250 gallons. Writing this near the storm’s passage, we’re at two inches of rain in the last 24 hours.
Currently, I have eight 32 gallon and two 44 gallon Rubbermaid Brute trash cans lined up near the vegetable garden.. They are #2 food grade plastic. By request, I’ve received them for birthdays and Christmas over the years and they’ve increased in price. By storm’s end, I expect all to be full which totals 344 gallons plus another 50 gallons in the tall black can—almost 400 gallons.
After the rain, I cover the cans to prevent evaporation and mosquito breeding. Using a watering can, I irrigate the garden with the rainwater and consider it weightlifting The “bottom of the barrel” is used on fruit trees so the water is filtered through the soil. Two cans have low spigots so a hose can be used for irrigation. At season’s end, we stack in store them in a corner behind a tall fruit tree.
In November 2015 we installed our first Bushman 305 gallon rain tank with rebates from local water authorities. Our son, Tim was a co-laborer. Enamored with the successful rain capture, we purchased an identical second tank four months later. They’re installed in a narrow area between the houses and mostly out of sight.
Because of the configuration of the rain gutters, the green tank fills first. When the overflow can is full we open the spigot at the bottom and drain the excess to a lawn area where there are five fruit trees nearby. The second best place to store rainwater is in the ground.
We were first inspired by Brad Lancaster’s Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond and his inventive measures in Tucson, Arizona. An internet search will yield many other resources if you’re looking to capture rainwater.
If you’re in the San Diego area consider contacting RainThanks & Greywater. We were inspired by the owner’s rainwater collection projects at an open house of her property.

Rain Water Harvesting System
Installing a rainwater harvesting system is a wise and advantageous decision. The first and most important advantage is that it aids in water conservation. Water conservation undeniably influences a sustainable environment as the globe faces an increasingly pressing need to combat climate change. A rainwater collecting system might help you save money on your water costs. It is cost-effective, offers high-quality water, reduces reliance on wells, and is considered simple to maintain because it is not used for drinking, cooking, or other sensitive purposes.
There are multiple reasons why you should build a rainwater collecting system. But there isn't one that doesn't. It helps to decrease erosion and floods, has environmental advantages, and is an adequate irrigation method.
What is Rain Water Harvesting?
Rainwater runoff from roofs, parks, highways, open spaces, etc., is collected and stored by rainwater harvesting systems and can be used in future. It is possible to preserve or replenish the groundwater using this water runoff.
Ground Water Recharging:
According to recent research, excessive underground water tapping is to blame for the decline in groundwater. Urban regions' ever-growing populations and the rate of development have caused overuse of the water supply. Artificial recharging is, therefore, essential.
Advantages of Rainwater Harvesting system:
In areas where the groundwater level frequently drops, it also migrates the farmers' issues with continually lowering tubewell bores.
It facilitates using the primary water supply and prevents runoff from being wasted.
In urban states, it lessens flooding.
It increases vegetation cover.
It makes groundwater more readily available when it is needed.
It increases the water levels in dry wells, including bore wells.
As surface runoff is decreased, soil erosion is reduced.
It aids in energy conservation because a one-meter rise in water level results in a 0.40 kWh reduction in electricity use while lifting groundwater.
It lessens soil erosion, floods, stormwater runoff, and surface water contamination from fertilizers, pesticides, metals, and other sediments.
With no additives, dissolved salts, or minerals, it is a great water supply option for landscape irrigation.
Conclusion:
Utilizing rainwater collecting and harvesting is suitable for resolving the worldwide water crisis issue. Using a rainwater collecting system has several advantages for every community. In regions with enough rainfall but insufficient groundwater supplies, this straightforward approach to water conservation can help a fantastic solution take off. It will offer the most effective and sustainable method of managing water resources and open the door to other economic pursuits that will empower local populations. Decide on "Diplast", the top producers of well-known rigid PVC pipes and water storage tanks and install a rainwater harvesting system in India. In order to effectively use rainwater and solve the current water issue, such rainwater collecting devices have become essential. Our top priority is quality. We place emphasis solely on the creation of high-quality products. Re Roofing with Asphalt Shingles: What You Should Know
Re roofing is a significant investment that offers homeowners the opportunity to enhance their property’s durability, energy efficiency, and visual appeal. Whether your current roof has reached the end of its lifespan, has sustained damage, or you're simply looking to upgrade, choosing the right roofing material is crucial. Among the many options available, asphalt shingles have emerged as a top choice for homeowners due to their affordability, versatility, and proven performance in various climates.
First introduced in the early 20th century, asphalt shingles have evolved into a modern, high-tech roofing solution. Their popularity stems from their ability to combine functionality and style, providing excellent protection against the elements while offering a wide range of aesthetic choices. With innovations such as enhanced durability, reflective coatings for energy efficiency, and luxurious designs that mimic high-end materials, asphalt shingles are no longer a one-size-fits-all option but a tailored solution for diverse homeowner needs.
For those new to the re roofing Sunshine Coast process, the decision-making journey can feel overwhelming. Questions about types of shingles, installation methods, costs, and maintenance often arise. Fortunately, asphalt shingles offer a balance of simplicity and flexibility, making them an ideal choice for both seasoned homeowners and those tackling their first major roofing project.
Why Choose Asphalt Shingles for Re roofing?
When evaluating roofing materials, asphalt shingles stand out for several reasons:
1. Unmatched Versatility
Asphalt shingles come in a broad array of styles, textures, and colours, making it easy to find a design that complements your home's architecture. Whether you have a contemporary build or a classic Victorian-style home, asphalt shingles can be tailored to suit your aesthetic preferences.
2. Exceptional Durability
Designed to withstand severe weather conditions, asphalt shingles are resistant to rain, snow, and high winds. Some high-performance shingles are even rated to endure winds of up to 130 mph, making them an excellent choice for areas prone to storms or hurricanes.
3. Budget-Friendly Option
Compared to materials like metal, slate, or tile, asphalt shingles are significantly more affordable. Their combination of lower upfront costs and relatively easy installation makes them a popular option for homeowners seeking value without compromising quality.
4. Energy Efficiency
Modern asphalt shingles, particularly those with cool roofing technology, reflect more sunlight, reducing heat absorption. This can lead to lower cooling costs, especially during the summer months.
Types of Asphalt Shingles
Understanding the different types of asphalt shingles will help you make the right choice for your home:
3-Tab Shingles: These are the most economical option, characterised by their flat, uniform appearance. While they are lightweight and easy to install, they have a shorter lifespan compared to other types, typically lasting 20–25 years.
Architectural (Dimensional) Shingles: These offer a more robust construction and a multi-dimensional appearance, resembling wood shakes or slate. They are more durable than 3-tab shingles, with a lifespan of 30–50 years.
Luxury Shingles: Designed for homeowners seeking premium aesthetics, these shingles mimic the look of expensive materials like natural slate or cedar shakes. They are heavier and more durable, making them an excellent choice for high-end projects.
Key Considerations Before Re roofing
Re roofing involves more than simply replacing old shingles. Here are some factors to keep in mind:
1. Inspecting the Existing Roof
Before proceeding, it's essential to inspect the condition of your existing roof. Issues such as rot, water damage, or structural weaknesses need to be addressed to ensure a stable foundation for the new shingles.
2. Layering vs. Full Replacement
In some cases, new shingles can be installed over existing layers, saving time and money. However, if the current roof has significant damage or already has multiple layers, a full replacement may be necessary.
3. Local Building Codes
Your local regulations may limit the number of shingle layers allowed on a roof or require specific installation standards. Check with your municipality to ensure compliance.
4. Choosing the Right Underlayment
The underlayment, installed between the roof deck and shingles, is crucial for waterproofing and protecting your home from moisture infiltration. Options include felt paper and synthetic materials, each with varying levels of durability and cost.
5. Ventilation Matters
Proper ventilation extends the life of your shingles by preventing heat and moisture buildup in the attic. Ensure your contractor addresses ventilation during installation.
The Installation Process: Step by Step
Re roofing with asphalt shingles follows a detailed process to ensure durability and reliability:
1. Preparation and Removal
The old roofing material is removed, and the deck is inspected for damage. Necessary repairs are made to create a solid foundation.
2. Underlayment Installation
The underlayment is applied to provide additional protection against water infiltration.
3. Shingle Placement
Shingles are installed starting at the roof's lower edge, overlapping to create a watertight seal. Careful alignment ensures a uniform appearance.
4. Flashing and Sealing
Critical areas, such as chimneys, vents, and skylights, are sealed with metal flashing to prevent leaks.
5. Final Inspection
The completed roof is inspected to ensure all components are securely installed and meet quality standards.
Maintenance Tips for Longevity
A well-maintained roof can last for decades. Here’s how to keep your asphalt shingles in top condition:
1. Routine Inspections
Conduct biannual roof inspections, as well as after severe weather events. Look for loose, curled, or missing shingles, and address issues promptly.
2. Clean Your Gutters
Clogged gutters can cause water to back up onto the roof, leading to damage. Clean them regularly to ensure proper drainage.
3. Address Moss and Algae Growth
In damp climates, moss and algae can develop on shingles, causing discolouration and deterioration. Use a gentle cleaning solution or hire a professional to remove growth safely.
4. Trim Overhanging Branches
Nearby trees can drop leaves and branches onto the roof, potentially causing damage. Keep branches trimmed back to prevent issues.
Understanding the Costs
The cost of re roofing with asphalt shingles varies depending on factors such as shingle type, roof size, and labour charges. On average, homeowners can expect to spend:
3-Tab Shingles: $2,500–$8,000 for a typical roof.
Architectural Shingles: $5,000–$15,000 for a higher-end installation.
Luxury Shingles: $10,000–$25,000 or more for premium designs.
Keep in mind that additional costs may arise if structural repairs or extensive preparation work is needed.
Environmental Considerations
If sustainability is a priority, you’ll be glad to know that asphalt shingles are recyclable. Many recycling programs turn old shingles into paving materials, reducing waste in landfills.
Choosing the Right Contractor
Re roofing is a complex process best left to experienced professionals. When hiring a contractor, look for:
Proper licencing and insurance.
Experience with asphalt shingle installations.
Positive reviews and referrals.
A detailed, written estimate that outlines costs, timelines, and materials.
Re roofing with asphalt shingles is a practical, durable, and cost-effective solution for homeowners. With their design flexibility, long lifespan, and straightforward maintenance, they are a dependable choice for protecting your home. By understanding the process and investing in proper care, you can enjoy a beautiful and resilient roof for years to come.

Pigeon Control Team: Your Partner in Keeping Pigeons at Bay
Pigeons, while often seen as a symbol of peace and freedom, can quickly become a nuisance when they decide to take up residence near your home or business. These birds can cause significant damage to property, spread diseases, and create an unsightly mess. Fortunately, a professional pigeon control team can help you keep these winged invaders at bay. Let’s explore how a pigeon control team can be your trusted partner in maintaining a clean, safe, and peaceful environment.
Why Pigeon Control Is Essential
Pigeons are more than just an eyesore. They bring with them a host of problems that can impact both your health and your property. Here are a few reasons why pigeon control is essential:
Health Risks: Pigeons are known to carry diseases such as histoplasmosis, salmonella, and cryptococcosis, which can be harmful to humans and pets. Their droppings, which are acidic in nature, can also cause respiratory issues if they come into contact with the air or surfaces.
Damage to Property: Pigeon droppings can corrode building materials, including wood, metal, and concrete. The acid in their waste can damage paint, roofing, and even your car. Additionally, the nests and debris they leave behind can clog gutters and drain systems, leading to water damage.
Noise Pollution: Pigeons are noisy birds, especially during mating season. Their cooing, fluttering, and nesting habits can disrupt the peace and tranquility of your home or workplace.
Unwanted Guests: Pigeons tend to attract other pests, including mites and lice. These pests can further affect the health and hygiene of your environment.
How a Pigeon Control Team Can Help
When faced with a pigeon infestation, a pigeon control team is your best option for a long-term solution. Here’s how they can help:
1. Comprehensive Inspection
The first step in any effective pigeon control strategy is a thorough inspection of the area. A professional team will assess your property to identify potential pigeon hotspots such as rooftops, air vents, windowsills, and balconies. They will also check for signs of nesting or roosting and determine how pigeons are gaining access to your building.
2. Humane Pigeon Deterrents
The best pigeon control teams use humane and ethical methods to deter pigeons. These methods include:
Bird Spikes: Installed on ledges, rooftops, and other flat surfaces, bird spikes prevent pigeons from perching.
Bird Nets: These are used to block pigeons from accessing certain areas, such as open windows or roof spaces. Bird net services provide an effective, discreet, and long-lasting solution.
Bird Wire Systems: A discreet and effective way to prevent pigeons from landing on specific areas, these systems create an unstable surface for the birds.
Visual Deterrents: Devices such as reflective tape, predator decoys, or laser lights are often used to create an environment that pigeons find threatening, encouraging them to move elsewhere.
3. Exclusion and Preventive Measures
Once the pigeons have been removed, a pigeon control team will focus on exclusion methods. This involves sealing entry points and making it difficult for pigeons to re-enter the area. It could involve repairing holes in walls, securing vents, and applying treatments to areas where pigeons are known to roost.
4. Nesting and Waste Removal
Pigeon nests, droppings, and other debris can be hazardous. A professional team will safely remove these materials, ensuring that all health risks are minimized. This not only removes the immediate threat of disease but also makes the area less attractive to future pigeon infestations.
5. Ongoing Monitoring and Maintenance
Pigeon control doesn’t end once the birds are gone. A reputable pigeon control team will offer ongoing monitoring and maintenance services. This ensures that your property remains pigeon-free, with regular checks to identify and address any potential issues before they become major problems.
Why Choose a Professional Pigeon Control Team?
While DIY pigeon control methods may provide temporary relief, they often fail to address the root cause of the problem. A professional pigeon control team brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the table, ensuring that pigeons are not just removed but kept away for good.
Here are some benefits of hiring a professional pigeon control team:
Expertise and Knowledge: Professional teams understand pigeon behavior and know the most effective ways to manage and prevent infestations.
