MEZAR YAZISI

Watching The Midnight Club and this poem hit so hard I had to find it for future reference. Epitaph by Merrit Malloy
When I die Give what's left of me away To children And old men that wait to die. And if you need to cry, Cry for your brother Walking the street beside you. And when you need me, Put your arms Around anyone And give them What you need to give to me. I want to leave you something, Something better Than words Or Sounds. Look for me In the people I've known Or loved, And if you cannot give me away, At least let me live on your eyes And not on your mind. You can love me most By letting hands touch hands, By letting Bodies touch bodies, And by letting go Of children That need to be free. Love doesn't die, People do. So, when all that's left of me Is love, Give me away. I'll see you at home In the earth.

Quote

Epitaph by Merrit Malloy
When I die
Give what’s left of me away
To children
And old men that wait to die.
And if you need to cry,
Cry for your brother
Walking the street beside you.
And when you need me,
Put your arms
Around anyone
And give them
What you need to give to me.
I want to leave you something,
Something better
Than words
Or sounds.
Look for me
In the people I’ve known
Or loved,
And if you cannot give me away,
At least let me live on in your eyes
And not on your mind.
You can love me most
By letting
Hands touch hands,
By letting
Bodies touch bodies,
And by letting go
Of children
That need to be free.
Love doesn’t die,
People do.
So, when all that’s left of me
Is love,
Give me away.

A year ago my yiayia passed, and when I mentioned it in a fuc A/N, someone commented and recommended this poem. (Sorry whoever you were, but i don't remember your name). I really liked it then, it was soothing, and as it's the anniversary of her death I had to pull this up again for a reread.

this is maybe a long story but bear with me
you appeared in a video of ladyknightthebrave's about bly manor. she also did a video oh hill house (i've watched both a lottt of times). this will be relevant in a minute.
when i watched the midnight club and ilonka read epitaph by merrit malloy, it was sooo familiar to me specifically in the context of your work and mostly hill house, but it wasn't part of the funeral scene(s) and i googled and googled and couldn't figure out why i knew this poem.
cut to me rewatching (for the umpteenth time) ladyknightthebrave's hill house video and she BRINGS UP THE POEM and i felt so unbelievably satisfied and gratified knowing why i associated that poem so strongly with hill house.
so my question is - is it a coincidence that that poem appeared in the midnight club years after her video came out? is she just really in tune with you as a filmmaker? had you seen her hill house video either before or after being interviewed for her bly manor video? i've always been curious.
I saw her Hill House video long before the interview and before the Midnight Club, and I was incredibly moved by her use of the poem. It stayed in my mind as we wrote Midnight Club, and I knew I wanted to use it there.

It really helped me when my mom passed away, I read it at her memorial. I'm thinking of getting the last line tattooed :)

I'm so sorry for your loss 🫂 When it's time for our loved ones to leave, the best we can do is to make sure they do not suffer. Which doesn't really ease our own pain, but it can be a lifeline. And just… hold onto all your cherished memories of her as a reminder that love is always worth it.
I know the subject here is people, but Merrit Malloy's poem Epitath is about death and love, and we can apply its main philosophy to all beings. It's a blind shot, but this gives me some comfort, so maybe it will offer something to you too.
Once again, I'm sorry 🫂 please, take care 🫂
🫂 Thank you my dear, this was really lovely to receive and I'm sorry for the delay in responding. It's been a hard couple of days, but you're right, the love is always worth it. I try to hold on to the good times, and at the very least I'm grateful that my family and I got the chance to ease her suffering before it could get any worse.
And thank you so much for recommending the poem. A good epitaph is absolutely a comfort, and this was lovely.
(I'm sure my dearly departed old lady would thank you, too. Or at least offer a sandpapery hand bath, she was very good at those.)

There are people who cannot say good-bye
They are born this way , this is how they die
They are the keepers of promises ,what moves them does not wear out
Their loyalty will tear apart your clocks
These are the people who can hear the music in songs
They are the Vow carriers
The grandmothers who always leave the porchlight on
No one is lost to the one who sees .
These are the women widowed by men they never married.
These are the girls who wait even when you don't come.
These are the mothers of orphans , they can turn a fake into an original
They will hear the prayer in your self-contempt.
As distance is measured ,people do not end
It is one of those stories that cannot be written down except across a lifetime of open doors .
There is a holding on beyond the letting go
There is a reunion in everybody's chest
This is how we come to make a family from strangers
This is how we light candles
These are people who will remember you when you meet them
These are the people you can always call at night
They are humans turned angels by your asking
With each separation they go to seed again
These are the men who carried you on their shoulders
This is the one you are lonely for
the one who begins and ends your hunger
This is the man who said "Always"
There is something that does not wear out
It is the third part of any two people who join .
It opens and closes.
There are people who are alone who are not apart
This is why we listen to the madman when he speaks
People change but they do not stop
This is how we learn "Forever"
There are people you can count on
They are the keepers of promises
They are candles lit from each other
They can teach us eternity
We can get what we can give
This is the instruction
There are people who do not say goodbye
As distance is measured
You are one of them ..
Merrit Malloy, The People Who Didn't Say Goodbye
