Needy Streamer Overload (NSO), also known as Needy Girl Overdose, is an innovative visual novel that leverages transmedia storytelling to create an immersive and complex narrative experience. Players assume the role of an online manager for Ame, a fictional live-streamer whose mental health and personal identity deteriorate as she becomes increasingly consumed by her audience and online persona. By integrating game mechanics with real-world social media aesthetics and pressures, NSO resonates with contemporary issues surrounding digital identity, mental health, and the phenomenon of influencer culture (Van Ryn, Apperley, and Clemens, 2018).
The game employs transmedia techniques to transcend traditional plot boundaries, constructing a "hyperdiegetic" world—a narrative framework extending beyond a single storyline to encourage broader exploration (Jones, Cronin, and Piacentini, 2018). What was the purpose of creating the ai? just to sell or for people to use, or where the other motivations? I'm genuinely interested in the development of Callie. :)
So I've gone into it a bit before, but it can't hurt to go a bit further into it. I started really working on Callie in 2016 after kind of seeing how wild shit got with the elections. By that point it was becoming pretty abundantly clear that being online all the time was slowly rotting our brainstems, but especially with the discourses and shit surrounding the election of the Orange Menace.
People get so chronically online, and the algorithms of all these social media sites are created to prey on that. It's the 24/7 news cycle of things going wrong and bad that gets streamed to you even though, realistically, you have no direct control over any of it. It breeds this guilt complex, you know? And when you're constantly feeling guilty, shit kinda impedes your ability to use the 'social' part of social media.
Social media is about connecting with others. But realistically speaking, you aren't made to constantly be with other people, and you need to be able to step away and have time for yourself. With how hyperconnected the world is, there's this almost... atmosphere, where people are feeling guilty for needing privacy, in addition to all the other guilt on top of it. But at the same time, you can't just step away if you have an audience that feels entitled to you- the barrage when you leave can make your mental health even worse.
So in steps Callie, a sort of middle ground. The idea is that with her installed, she can post things in your absence and continue creating content, while you can have time for yourself. It's supposed to keep everyone happy- you get some alone time, and everyone else can still play with someone while you're destressing!
And at the same time... maybe you'll have a personal friend to keep for yourself.
I do intend to actually put her on the market at some point, but her code still needs a lot of work. Before she actually goes out to everyone, she needs to be perfect for you.

Getting the most out of our tech tools Technology is a critical component of our world today. From communication and time management to manufacturing and healthcare, tech tools have an enormous impact on our lives. And for students at UA Grantham, it’s also what allows them to find success in school no matter where they are located.
There’s always a tradeoff, of course, and sometimes it feels like our technology is taking over our lives. Let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of technology today—and how we can make sure that we’re getting the most out of these tools without falling into some common traps.
The Good Let’s start with the benefits that technology offers us. There is no question that we’re more connected than ever before, which means that most of our family, friends, coworkers, and loved ones are just a text, call, email, or video chat away. Stop and appreciate this for a moment! As difficult as being apart, for any reason, can be, we can still talk in real time with those who matter most.
That also means we don’t have to relinquish many of our routines, no matter what else is going on in the world. Technology allows us to keep working, communicating, going to school, shopping, going to doctor or therapy appointments, playing games, and staying aware of current events.
And it allows us to do so with even more ease: Google’s product suite, for instance, can help you write, format, present, calculate, collaborate, remind, and share all from one platform alone. The resources available today have made it possible to easily learn, share, and create in a truly global environment.
Technology allows students to watch lectures, participate in discussion groups, complete assignments, and earn their degrees from the comfort of their own homes. Online learning platforms make it possible to skip the commute to campus, eliminate the need for exams by mail, and improve efficiency.
The Bad The benefits of technology are genuinely incredible, but there can be too much of a good thing. Our hyperconnectivity means we may have difficulty disconnecting or creating space to unwind. That can lead to feelings of stress or exhaustion and make it harder to truly relax when we need that rest. If you could be working, studying, or catching up all the time, how do you know when to stop? Creating boundaries and promoting mindfulness are critical for giving ourselves the space and time our mental health deserves.
It's also important to be aware of the potential physical consequences from 24/7 connectivity. Eyestrain, hand or wrist pain, and sleep deprivation are common symptoms when spending so much time on our devices or in front of screens. Text neck, Blackberry thumb, and other overuse injuries are becoming increasingly more prevalent, which means it is critical to give your body a break and invest in your long-term health—particularly if you’re spending time on screens for work, entertainment, and school.
Going to school in a digital environment can exacerbate these trends, putting students at added risk for physical injuries even when it feels like a sedentary activity. Look for ways to optimize your study time, which can help you ensure you’re getting the most out of your screen time. UA Grantham offers a host of student support services, including tutoring, advising, and technology help, that can help you avoid spending too much extra time in virtual spaces.
The Ugly Unfortunately, there are even more severe risks out there when so much of our time is spent in virtual spaces. The sense of anonymity we have online, or of feeling slightly removed from the situation when behind a keyboard, can lead to saying things we wouldn’t ordinarily say in a face-to-face situation. Coupled with the ability to share information in record time, this can quickly create uncomfortable and even dangerous situations. It’s important to give yourself mindful space away from virtual environments (and time to process painful feelings when they arise).
The spread of misinformation or outright lies, the prevalence of bullying and cyber attacks, and other unpleasantries are all common side effects of our cyberspace—and they can lead to anxiety, depression, addiction, and other mental health disorders. Social media alone has had a dramatic impact on feelings of self-worth, success, and inclusion and belonging, and those feelings carry into our real worlds. Be cautious about what you consume and avoid taking every piece of information you see at face value.
The Balance As they say, everything in moderation. There are some truly wonderful tools out there, and you don’t have to delete your accounts or throw your computer out the window in order to have a positive relationship with technology. All you really need is to set some healthy boundaries!
Try charging your phone outside the bedroom so it’s not the first thing you look at in the morning. Practice turning off your devices during mealtimes or while exercising. Set time limits for your computer, tablet, or TV. Turn off notifications on your mobile tech so you’re less likely to pick it up as often. Create clear boundaries for when you plan to study and when it’s time to take a break. Consider whether there are some analog tools that help you learn better than their online counterparts, such as taking handwritten notes rather than typing them. Experiment and see what works—and feels—best for you.
Most importantly, check in with yourself regularly to see how you’re feeling. Take a moment to ask yourself: Am I really benefiting from using this piece of technology? Am I using this tool mindfully and how it was intended, or has it taken on a life of its own? Am I getting more out of it than I’m spending—in time, money, or energy? Our phones, tablets, and computers are more than just gadgets; they’ve become a big part of who we are. Social media, in particular, provides endless streams of news, entertainment, and social interactions, which can sometimes be overwhelming. This constant connectivity can lead to problems like anxiety, depression, and trouble focusing. Research shows that too much screen time can cause stress, loneliness, and even disrupt our sleep.
As worries about the negative effects of excessive screen use have grown, the idea of a digital detox has gained popularity. A digital detox means intentionally taking breaks from screens and social media to reduce stress and bring balance back into our lives. This could be a short break, like a weekend without screens, or a longer period of digital fasting (MSEd, 2023).
Many people who try digital detoxes report positive changes in their mental health. Without constant interruptions and less exposure to stressful content, people often feel calmer and less anxious. Time away from digital devices allows for more focused and peaceful moments. Cutting down on screen time, especially before bed, is linked to better sleep. The blue light from screens can interfere with melatonin, a hormone that helps us sleep well. Many find that their ability to concentrate and be productive improves when they aren’t distracted by constant notifications or social media (Kirsty, 2024).
The discussion around digital detoxes highlights a bigger need for better digital habits and balance. Instead of just disconnecting, we should focus on developing healthier ways to use technology. It’s important to understand how to use technology wisely. This means recognizing when we’re spending too much time online and learning how to manage our screen time effectively, for example introducing a rule to stop looking at your phone from 7pm (Kirsty, 2024). Being aware of how we use technology can help reduce its negative effects. This involves setting limits, taking regular breaks, and enjoying offline activities. We also need to value mental health more and make changes in how we incorporate technology into our daily lives.
For example, as a third-year occupational therapy student juggling classes, clinical placements, and endless online research, I decided to embark on a digital detox over a weekend. By disconnecting from screens, I found space for deep self-reflection, practiced mindfulness, and reconnected with friends and family face-to-face. This intentional break not only reduced my stress and anxiety but also enhanced my focus and motivation when I returned to my studies.
In our tech-saturated world, taking time to disconnect to connect is essential for our mental health and is it’s a crucial step towards developing a healthier, more mindful relationship with technology. By stepping away from screens, we not only alleviate stress and anxiety but also create space to reconnect with ourselves and those around us in a meaningful way. As we navigate a world increasingly dominated by screens, how might you incorporate a digital detox into your routine to reclaim balance and enhance your well-being?

A digital detox can be a powerful way to reclaim mental wellness and restore balance in our lives.
The Impact of Constant Digital Connectivity on Mental Health
The pervasive use of digital devices affects our mental health in various ways. Continuous exposure to screens can cause digital fatigue that leads to eye strain, headaches, and disrupted sleep patterns. Research suggests heavy device use, particularly before bedtime, can interfere with sleep quality and quantity. One study found that children who used digital devices at bedtime experienced significantly poorer and shorter sleep. Additionally, the study identified a link between nighttime tech use and higher body mass index (Cherry, 2023). Social media, in particular, can contribute to feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, and anxiety as it leads to social comparison on a platform where people highly curate and select only the best parts of their lives to display. You might feel that everyone else is living a fuller, more prosperous, or more exciting life based on the small, curated snapshots you see on their Instagram or Facebook (Cherry, 2023)
The pressure to stay connected and responsive at all times can be incredibly stressful. According to the American Psychological Association, a fifth of U.S. adults (around 18%) named technology use as a significant source of stress in their lives (Cherry, 2023). The root cause of this stress may be linked to the inability to disconnect from work emails and notifications, extending working hours, and blurring the boundaries between personal and professional life. This constant state of alertness prevents our minds from truly relaxing, leading to chronic stress and decreased mental wellbeing.
Strategies for a Successful Digital Detox
1. Set Clear Boundaries:
Define specific times of the day to check emails and social media. Avoid using digital devices during meals, before bedtime, and first thing in the morning.
Communicate your digital detox plans to friends, family, and colleagues to set expectations for your availability.
2. Designate Tech-Free Zones:
Create areas in your home where digital devices are not allowed, such as the bedroom, dining room, or a cozy reading nook.
