Women athletes - even recreational athletes - have to understand that they should openly discuss the issues and keep a close watch on their cycle. Performance always depends on the phase of the cycle and nutrition has to be planned accordingly. Bloating, water retention, irritability and cravings become significant during the premenstrual phase and that can lead to performance issues. Yesterday, while team @dopepeopledoingdopethings fed over 250 men, women, and children, team @iheartprojectpixie distributed 40 #pixiepackages, totalling 720 feminine care items, to the women served at the bi-monthly @dopepeopledoingdopethings feeding of the homeless initiative. Ensuring these women (and all women) have access to the supplies needed to have a healthy menstrual cycle will always remain our first priority and we thank everyone who donates to us in support of this mission. With each outreach opportunity, I learn just how incredibly important and humbling this work is...how it's more than just giving out pads and tampons but also about hearing these women's stories and admiring their resilience, seeing them, and just showing up to be of service in whatever form that looks like. And yesterday, "service" meant finding resources for and praying with a woman who came to our table and disclosed she was suicidal when asked "how are you today?" It meant working with @jaicrabbe, as an extension of her team, to find shelter for a young lady who is 9 months pregnant and living on the subway platform. It was proof that when you have two or more people committed to an outcome, you can really create change! As always, thank you to my team for being lighthouses for this vision and taking on this heartwork alongside me. And a special shout-out to our newest TEEN volunteer @v3ralyn for wanting to join us in yesterday's efforts. Let’s talk about fat! Did you know that you need to eat fat to make fat? Yes, really, it’s true! Good fats such as avocados, oily fish, olive oil and nuts and seeds are an important part of a balanced diet. # This is especially significant for women, because fat, in the form of cholesterol, is how we make our steroid hormones, including estrogen and progesterone. These two hormones are incredibly important for women and drive the ebbs and flows of our menstrual cycles. # Are you thinking, wait, Le’Nise, I’ve always heard that low-fat was the thing to do? Here’s the thing: nutritional science has moved on significantly and we now know that there is a place for high quality fat in our diet. Good fats fill us up and help us stay fuller for longer and so do so many other wonderful things for us! # I will say that low fat diets have a place for specific therapeutic needs, however for the majority of women, you need to eat fat to support your hormone production! # I love to add a dollop of almond butter into my morning smoothie and some sardines or anchovies into my lunchtime salads.
