📚 October Reading Round-Up 📚
I read some good books this month; definitely more than in September. I have a few I’m hoping to get through in November. Continuing my Vorkosigan Saga and Murderbot journeys (and loving it!).
- Ocean’s Echo by Everina Maxwell
- Ethan of Athos by Lois McMaster Bujold (fun, entertaining, lots of action and humour)
- Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells (amazing, entertaining, funny, emotional, great character development, that ending!!!!)
- Masquerade in Lodi by Lois McMaster Bujold (cute and fun, a bit stressful and very fast-paced, great themes and ending)
- Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon (a re-read, entertaining, interesting themes, great relationship)
- Born of Vengeance by Sherrilyn Kenyon (re-read, more fun this time around, liked the pacing, plot, characters, and relationships, somewhat repetitive in terms of main theme)
- A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan (story worked perfectly as an audiobook, great prose and worldbuilding and characters, almost made me cry, can’t wait to read the next book)

I’ve been stewing recently over Black Swan’s appearance on the Astral Express.
Usually after a Trailblazing Mission, we say our goodbyes to our newfound friends, and it’s on to the next journey! (Or we go back to revisit other worlds we assisted.)
That doesn’t seem to be the case with Black Swan. Instead, it seems she still wants something from the Astral Express and, oh boy, she makes quite another entrance by casually strolling out of March’s room. (It seems becoming Memokeeper causes you to forget basic courtesy, like respecting your hosts’ ground rules and privacy. *side-eyes the Messenger*) Whatever Black Swan’s motives are for staying with the Crew, it surely has to do with Amphoreus.
For a a brief recap, Amphoreus is also known as “the Eternal Land,” can only be seen through the light of the Garden of Recollection’s mirrors and is “fettered by three Paths.”
I’m willing to guess that two of those Paths are the Permanence and, of course, the Remembrance.
I’m guessing the Remembrance because of the aforementioned description, and also Black Swan making her entrance from March’s room, whose owner has already been established as amnesiac with ties to the Garden of Recollection, and there are a few clues pointing towards March previously being a Memokeeper such as Black Swan mentioning a Memokeeper who liked to preserve memories with a camera. (You can find this dialogue towards the end of the Dreamjoy Memoir event by talking to Black Swan.)
I’m also guessing the Permanence is one of those three Paths because when Black Swan addresses Dan Heng, she points out his “mired memories.” She could have well simply called him the Astral Express’s archivist, or just left it at him being a descendant of the Permanence and a charming little dragon and whatnot; but she also draws attention to, once again, someone’s memory issues.
As for what the third Path might be…um…I have one crazy idea, but I don’t know how to string it together just yet. 😅
What I’m also slightly curious about is that Black Swan doesn’t address the Trailblazer, who we know since the beginning is also amnesiac. All we know is that they’re connected to the Stellaron Hunters through Kafka. Maybe Black Swan already knows about this and doesn’t feel the need to bring it up; but again, she could have done the same thing for Dan Heng and well left it alone, yet didn’t. (This leads me to think that we’re probably not going to get crumbs of Trailblazer’s backstory during the next journey. 😞)
As for Black Swan herself and the Remembrance, some background on Fuli and the Remembrance’s related factions can be found in the Aeon and Factions tabs of the Data Bank, but I’ll put screenshots here for convenience~
Here is the entry for Fuli:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s one for the Garden of Recollection:

And here’s one on the Cremators (and I’ll get to them later):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then we have Black Swan herself. (Note: Unfortunately, I did not feel like pulling for her — nor did I even have enough Stellar Jades — to try and pull for her when she first released, so I’ll have to resort to fan wiki. 🫠)
According to her character stories, it seems like one way you can join the Garden of Recollection and become a Memokeeper is if another Memokeeper invites you. Obviously, this would require said Memokeeper to reveal themselves, as they otherwise make sure to leave no traces of their presence.
Now, for Black Swan to appear out of thin air on the Express to initially recommend a location as the Crew’s next stop, she most likely wants something and the Crew would be the best people to help her get it; and with the Astral Express running low on fuel, she now has greater leverage.
NOTE: This thing has been sitting in my drafts for so long, I lost my train (oop 🫢) of thought and have been struggling to remember the gist of this.
If you remember our first encounter with the Memokeeper next to the Memory of Chaos mirror, it was mentioned that the Garden of Recollection has some set of “rules” in place that apparently prevent the Memokeeper from introducing herself to the Crew and making some sort of arrangement for her to stay on the Express to do as she needs to (within reason — though I suspect some Memokeepers are not usually reasonable). She even goes as far as to tamper with their memories if we try to alert them about her presence (and basically proves Welt at least somewhat right about needing to be cautious around people related to the Garden of Recollection).
So that leads me to think that Memokeepers are not normally allowed to interact with the tangible (for lack of better words). All they can do is observe and record the memories of the universe. The only exception so far is when Gallagher sent out those invitations to the Charmony Festival, and the Garden of Recollection was among the factions who received the invitations.
Leading us back to Black Swan, who we met and collaborated with to fight off the Beyond the Sky Choir. That probably should have been the end of any business with her since she’s Memokeeper, so for her to appear to us again, and not only make a suggestion but also a recommendation…there could be something happening and the Garden of Recollection is involved this time, and Black Swan wants us to help her solve it.
And there could be a chance that the reward includes not only unlimited fuel for the Astral Express, but also precious memories — specifically, some details into March’s past before she was frozen (and maybe more as a bonus, such as Dan Heng’s past life as Dan Feng and what happened leading up to the Sedition, or even the Trailblazer’s time with Kafka and the Stellaron Hunters).
Now, again, there are rules in place that apparently prevent Memokeepers from interacting normally with other people. At the very least, they don’t seem to be allowed to interact with other people unaffiliated with the Garden of Recollection, or Fuli in any way. (Talking to the Trailblazer was probably as close as that MoC Memokeeper could get to communication.) If March really was a Memokeeper, did she violate some rules, and was frozen with her memories gone as a punishment? Welt mentions that whoever froze her probably meant to protect or banish her.
So, is the situation with Amphoreus dire enough that Black Swan is potentially bending those rules, or even outright breaking them? And if Black Swan is violating those rules, what are the repercussions for that?
Let’s hope nothing too drastic happens.

2023 Reviews: 5-stars, Part 1
Ok I'm trying a new thing to get more of my book reviews in long form on Tumblr - we'll see if it works! I'll be posting themed round-ups of my reviews, starting with this round-up of my first five 5-stars of the year. (Weirdly a synopsis is always the thing that slows me down the most so I'm only including a one line description of each of them, although there are also links to the blurbs.)
This is a pretty eclectic mix of books, but I absolutely loved them, and I'm excited to talk about them more!
1. Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell: 5/5
Pitch: SF m/m romance where a walking disaster mind reader and a very rules-oriented soldier are force-soulbonded & then discover a government conspiracy
Review: I loved this - like its predecessor Winter's Orbit, this is a standout SF romance that really builds out a world and then lovingly details two people moving through that world, and their relationship with each other. Truly excellent, and I love Surit with my whole heart.
2. Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco: 5/5
Pitch: vampire hunter teams up with two vampires to solve the mystery of new super evil vampires, & then they all fall in love
Review: Listen, this book!!! It was sexy, and dark, and mysterious, and wow. I read The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco before, and it didn't appeal to me very much, but this book hot damn. I'll be reading the sequel (the second half of the duology!) basically as soon as it comes out. I think if the second book was out right now I would be staying up as late as it took to read it.
As you'd expect, there is a fair bit of an age gap between the characters, but I thought it was handled well.
3. The Stars Undying by Emery Robin: 5/5
Pitch: Julius Caesar, gender-swapped Anthony, & Cleopatra, but space opera
Review: Wow. I loved this book. It is rich and dense and slow but it is so so good. The prose is beautiful and the descriptions are gorgeous, but if you know anything about Caesar (and you do, on the Ides of March-loving website) the whole time everything is beautiful you know it will end, which makes it more poignant while it lasts. Also, the science fiction setting is fantastic. I would absolutely devour the second book if it was out.
4. When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill: 5/5
Pitch: a bunch of women all turned into dragons and flew away in the 1950s and America doesn't know how to handle it
Review: I really loved this - I think it has a lot to say about queerness and memory and rage and freedom and joy, and most of all family. It's pretty tightly focused on Alex and her life, so it doesn't really dig into the dragon stuff as much as it could. I personally didn't mind that - it felt reasonable for the focus of the novel, especially given that it is framed as Alex's memoir. I thought it was personal and yet relatable, and I loved the characters.
5. Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett: 5/5
Pitch: time monks & Death's granddaughter try to stop a very ill-advised clock
I totally get why this is considered one of the best Discworld books. Many good theories, fun thinky thoughts, excellent puns and jokes. And in the end, one that makes you feel. (I wouldn't start here though...if you read Hogfather before this I think that would be sufficient though.

Sparking-Steps' Acquisitions Log, page 1: an introduction.
Preceding this passage in no particular order are half a dozen lines of scratched out text, a small stain from a quill resting on paper, a small selection of sketches of a hist tree, a ruined Ayleid structure, the writer's own tail and exactly one decipherable line of text, "Julianos please give me the strength to start this damned thing".
Whatever, I've been sitting on this the whole damned time I've been in Bruma. Might as well get this over with before I cross the Jeralls and actually start this whole chapter of my life. That, and I might consider converting these pages into my memoirs some day so I do feel some duty to actually do a properly good job at this. Though I suppose this is just for me for now, I can iron all of this out later.
So, how do I even start this? Well, I suppose if this is to be a memoir I should probably give some context for who I am, right? I am Sparking-Steps, I have a name in Jel but I don't prefer to share it. I am a native to the province of High Rock and a prime example of a Saxhleel in their prime. I am a scholar in the study of history, particularly in the subject of the Atmoran dragon cult. I am also something of a combat mage, though that's secondary to my true passions. Everyone has some extracurricular sport they took up in university, yeah?
Speaking of my schooling, I studied at Gwylim University in High Rock and briefly worked there as a research assistant. An event in my life that directly leads into this current one. I am, as of now, making the trip from the Imperial City into the northern province of Skyrim as I have received an invitation from one of my old professors, one Auryen Morellus. He seems to have remembered my passion for fieldwork and has offered me employment at a museum that he's working to open in Skyrim's capital of Solitude, specifically, I am to be the "Relic Hunter" as he puts it, a procurement specialist. It's probably not a bad job for me, I was somewhat known for being able to "find" things amongst my peers in Gwylim.
However, this job isn't just about asking politely for the local Nords to donate items of historical import. No, no, no, it's actual fieldwork! According to the old mer, I am to go out into Skyrims' notable number of old historical sites myself and do some proper archeological work! Gods, I think this might be the first time I've ever truly had the opportunity to actually see an old dragon cult tomb up close! Skyrim's old barrows are bound to be filled with the remnants of the Nords' fascinating old cultural traditions. I won't go too much into detail on it here, maybe in a later entry, this is still the introduction page after all.
Gods, I have been writing a bit haven't I? Perhaps this'll have to be a extended to a short chapter for the memoir? Maybe fill it out with something about the trepidation I'm certainly feeling about the current war in the area? I mean, I'm not really particularly feeling that, no way I'll be dragged into it, but it would probably sound good at least.
The next passage features several more scratched out lines of text and several more sketches, this time of a crowded bar, a napping mountain dog and the writer's tail again.
Gods, how am I supposed to end these things? Seriously, what am I supposed to say as a sign off to myself? A cute little "sincerely" message? Nothing? Honestly this is why I never understood journaling. Thank the gods this is the only entry I intend to do like this, the whole idea of an acquisitions log is far more feasible with how I prefer to write. Whatever, goodbye for now myself or whoever else ends up reading this. If you aren't me and your reading this, either please return it or go burn in the lava lakes of Oblivion depending on if I'm living or dead (respectively).

Description:
Relive six decades of flying helicopters including an extended tour in Vietnam and the mountains of Afghanistan, with a little Iraq, Kuwait, and National Guard thrown in. This is Minuteman: Two, Three… Go! recounts Wayne Chasson’s times, from the early, young, and dumb days to a more seasoned pilot of Huey and other helicopters in three American wars and the National Guard here at home. From the tragic to the ridiculous, it’s all here in refreshing candor and lifelike detail, and told in the voice of the author. Chasson relives it all for us in this gritty and honest memoir—with humility, humor, and gratitude—as he himself is still trying to figure out how he made it through alive.
Review:  It was a decent book, a quick read that really is more of his look back on things. It gives you some good stories, some good anecdotes, and it’s semi-polished enough to give it readability and flow. It won’t give you the same experience as Chickenhawk or others in the same genre, but it will give those who know him - family and friends and such - a good insight into what he wants them to know about his time in Vietnam, and later Iraq and Afghanistan.

REVIEW: Memoirs Of A Dragon Hunter by Katie MacAlister
REVIEW: Memoirs Of A Dragon Hunter by Katie MacAlister
From the New York Times bestselling author known for her “zany humor and spicy romance” (Publishers Weekly) comes an action-packed paranormal about a dragon hunter and the dangerous bad boy who steals her heart.   Dragon Hunter Wanted: Sword supplied. No experience necessary. One moment, I was a normal (if somewhat germaphobic) math teacher getting ready for summer vacation. Then my sister died…
