Road trips
Ever since I was a child I enjoyed long trips by car or train. Only recently have I learnt to call those by car "road trips".
Of course, a road trip is more than just a long journey. It's a multi-day experience. Taking whistle-stops in out-of-the-way towns and villages. Drinking good coffee in quaint little shops and enjoying things like melktert and koeksisters.
Road-tripping means staying over in guesthouses in places like Colesberg, Hanover or Richmond; Kimberley, Victoria West or Calvinia; or on farms near Britstown and Carnarvon; or with friends in Bloemfontein, Bedford or Beaufort West. It's always a discovery, not only of hospitality, but also of unexpected spiritual and intellectual companionship. And of plates loaded with honest food served with ample wine.
When our kids were small we always tried to reach our destination as soon as possible - be it the place where were to spend our holiday, or home on our journey back - frequently travelling through the night.
The result was that it was more about the destination than about the journey. A lot of things got lost in the process: the landscape, the small towns, the opportunity to wind down the moment the journey started, opening yourself up to new places and interesting people. And most of all, the stars at night. Nowhere else have I seen such a glorious display of the night sky as on the plains of the Karoo.
Nowadays we do it differently. Taking our time. Making frequent stops. Staying over and going for long walks after a day's travel. Discovering bookshops and bakeries; coffee shops and "padstalletjies"; arts and crafts and home made jams, preserves and chutneys.
And of course, taking time means meeting people, having conversations, connecting on more than an artificial level.
Going on a road trips gives meaning to the old adage: "Life's a journey. Enjoy the ride."

Week 0: Overview and Initial Thoughts
Hello! My name is Satwika and I will be sharing my experiences from South Africa with everyone for the next couple of months. More specifically, I am in Hermanus which is a coastal town about 1.5 hours from Cape Town. I will be doing research at SANSA, the South African National Space Agency, and completing a project under a mentor. There is also another student from UofM doing research, Aminata, who will probably show up in my blog often. I am excited to explore the city while also participating in interesting space weather research!
Arriving in Cape Town
I had a direct flight from New Jersey to Cape Town with Aminata which was about 14.5 hours so I was extremely exhausted when we arrived. Luckily, both of our bags came quickly and SANSA had a driver waiting for us so the journey from Cape Town to Hermanus was very smooth. The first thing I noticed after arriving was that it was completely dark outside. This was surprising at first since it was only around 6pm, but then I remembered that we were in the Southern Hemisphere and it was autumn/beginning of winter. While the sun sets around 8:30 pm in the US it sets at 5:30 pm in South Africa. The next thing that intrigued me the most was that it was not very cold outside. Although it was around the end of autumn, the weather was still fairly warm when I stepped outside - I didn’t even need a jacket. Of course I packed knowing the general weather in Hermanus but it was still interesting that this was their winter. Considering Michigan winters are ruthless it is nice to know that I won’t be freezing while I’m here until July.
Initial Thoughts about Hermanus
Honestly, Hermanus is a lot different than what I expected. Last year, I did a study abroad program in Sorrento which is a small beach town near Naples. Since it was a small town, the grocery stores weren’t as big as in the US and there were a lot of things I couldn’t get at all (still had an amazing time!). Furthermore, we walked everywhere since it was mostly cobblestone and the roads were too narrow for regular sized cars (most people drove vespas). When I heard that Hermanus was a coastal town as well, I expected something similar to Sorrento but it is much different. There are shopping malls, movie theaters (that play american movies), car dealerships, various cuisines/restaurants, etc. I honestly think that living in Hermanus will not be very different from living in the US. I even found an Indian restaurant nearby so if I am feeling homesick I can easily go eat there.
Goals
While I am in Hermanus I want to learn more about space weather through research while also immersing myself in South African culture. By the end of the program, I hope to have presentable results to show for all the work I did. I also want to learn a lot from Zama, who is going to be my mentor at Zama. As for the culture aspect, I would definitely like to try many different South African foods including bunny chow and melkterts. Furthermore I hope to befriend the other students who are staying at SANSA (most of whom are South African) and better understand their background, traditions, and thoughts on America! I am so excited to have this opportunity and share everything here :) I don't have many pictures yet but here are some initial ones from the plane and near SANSA.

Your feelings about mathematical constants may vary, but the love of pie remains steadfast and enduring. Take your pick from this selection, way more than 3.14159 in number. There’s the Cornish stargazy, if you like a fishy surprise popping out of your pie. Or you could go for the Russian kulebyaka, favored by Gogol and Chekhov. If you’ve no appetite for savory pies, why not try the raisin-filled Amish funeral pie or the delicately sweet South African melktert instead? There are pickle pies, pie sandwiches, tangy citrus pies, and even two pies baked into a massive cake. These 20 pies will sate every appetite. Q.E.D.

1/3 cup (35grams ) confectioner’s sugar powdered sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
9 Tablespoons (125grams) unsalted butter(cold or frozen) , cut into small pieces
1 large egg yolk
Milk filling
2 1/4 ( 496 ml) cups milk
2 tablespoon (28grams) butter
2 tablespoons (20 grams) flour
3-4 tablespoons (23- 30grams) cornstarch
1/2 cup (100grams) sugar
2 Large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg or replace with cinnamon
Instructions
Pastry Crust
Butter or spray a 9-inch pie pan with a removable bottom – making sure it is has been adequately sprayed. Set aside
Place flour, salt and sugar in a food processor pulse for a couple of times to mix ingredients.
Throw in butter and pulse until rough dough forms.
Then add egg yolk - pulse until the dough barely comes.
Remove dough place on a work surface - knead just enough to incorporate all the dough. Working the dough as little as possible.
Do not overwork the dough; otherwise it’ll be too tough. When it’s ready, the dough will be barely moistened and come together into a ball.
Lightly press the dough on the prepare pie pan – working from the center up until the bottom and sides are fully covered with pastry – again be very gentle when pressing the dough onto the pie pan.
Place pie pan in the freezer and freeze for at least 30 minutes or more this helps prevent the dough from rising- if you are in a rush brick, then bake with beans to prevent rising.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C) and place rack in center of oven
Bake crust for about 20 to 25 minutes or until the crust is dry and golden browned. Set aside
Milk Filling
Place saucepan over medium heat, add butter, nutmeg and milk -bring to a boil and remove from the heat.
In another bowl, mix together flour, cornstarch, sugar, vanilla and almond extract- whisk in eggs until smooth. Gently whisk into the saucepan making sure there are no lumps
Now return the pan back on the stove – keep stirring constantly until in starts to bubble.
Cook for about 5-6 minutes. Remove from heat and pour mixture into the baked pastry shell Sprinkle with cinnamon. Chill until ready to be served.
