Philanthropist Melinda Gates was all praises for India as she praised how the country has promoted gender equality. "India continues to show the world what investing in women can do and the benefits of investing in women" while addressing the "Women leading Change in Health and Science in India" conference in Delhi.

Gates, the co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation also praised the Indian government to take the digital payment initiative during the payment which supported money transfers to over 20 crore women, a step towards building a more gender-equal nation.

"In order to protect 300 million individuals, including 200 million women, during the pandemic, the government used digital bank accounts to give money to them", she added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier announced financial help worth ₹20,000 crores to 20 crore women having bank accounts under Jan Dhan Scheme in 2020. Melinda praised the efforts of the Modi-led government and said that the amount being transferred directly to women’s accounts is a fine example of gender equality.

"Making sure that cash transfers get directly into women's hands is an example of gender-intentional policymaking. India has been building a more gender-equal country from the bottom up over the past few years," she added.

She expressed her expectations of the collaboration of the Indian government and the Gates Foundation which would work together and contribute more towards building a gender-equal nation.

Melinda gates also met External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in New Delhi and discussed the G-20, global SDG progress, and digital development.
