Vakentine Meme Ask 7, 13, 14, 17
7. A non-canon ship that should be canon?
Clint/Natasha (they were almost canon except for Whedon's fuckery), Pepper/Happy (because that would've made more sense than her with Tony since she was such a shitty girlfriend/wife to him), Emma Frost/Steve Rogers, Emma Frost/Loki, Emma Frost/Tony Stark, Emma Frost/Bucky Barnes, Emma Frost/Natasha Romanoff.
Okay, I know I could throw out my other fave ships (Tony/Loki, Tony/Steve, Tony/Bucky, Bucky/Steve, etc), but I really can't say whether they should be canon or not. They're canon to me and anyone else who ships them, and I'm happy with them in fanfic and fanart. But especially those Emma Frost ones should be canon because she deserves to be happy.
And just so people don't think I'm ONLY into Marvel/MCU stuff, there's also Steve Harrington/Eddie Munson. That should absolutely be 100% canon because Eddie should not be dead, dammit.
13. Name a ship that deserved more content.
Phil Coulson/Melinda May. We could've had so much Phillinda content, but they waited to put them together-together until they killed him off the second time.
Mike Weston/Max Hardy from The Following. We got all of Ryan Hardy's love life splattered all over the series, but we definitely needed more Mike/Max.
Edwin and Ana Jarvis in that craptastic Peggy Carter series. Honestly, if they'd spent more time on the Jarvises and whatever Roger Sterling-Howard Stark fuckery was going on, that series would've been REALLY GOOD.
14. Is there a ship you feel gets undeserved hate in fandom?
Emma Frost/Scott Summers gets a gross amount of hate in the comic fandom, and even if I don't specifically ship them anymore, they're still a 'home' ship that I care about and can't stand to see the hate it gets.
17. Is there a type of ship you always go for?
I seem to really like the "two broken individuals find each other and start to heal themselves and each other" ships. The ones who can relate to each other on some level and that helps them get a grasp on those abuses they need to heal from. I also tend to like the "one character is more mentally/emotionally healthy because they've already dealt with all their shit, and they fall in love with the broken individual who thinks that they're entirely unlovable" ships. There are probably others, but those seem to be the ones that really push all the right buttons for me.
Thank you for the asks!

Episode 3 of What If...? ended where it should have started.
Nobody was asking "What if there was a murder mystery?" We wanna know who would be the Avengers if the first string was knocked out.
Fury was starting with Captain Marvel and a thawed-out Captain America. Who else would join c. 2011?
By process of elimination, not:
Asgardians--In this universe, Loki seems to have taken over the earth pretty easily with a united Asgard behind him. Have to assume that after his Heel Reveal, he's going to remain the antagonist (at least until Thanos shows up collecting Infinity Stones). Among the Asgardians, the only people who seemed to really dislike/distrust Loki are the Warriors Four (incl. Sif), but they are not likely to team up with the planet that murdered Thor. There IS an Asgardian wild card, though; see below.
Ant Fam cluster--Hope is dead, Janet is still lost in the quantumverse, Hank is presumably in prison forever, and Scott also hasn't yet been released. The Ant-man suit is locked in a basement. But see below for wild cards.
Isaiah Bradley--Leave him alone!!! Let the man have peace! But also he doesn't seem to have been known to SHIELD and the people in the Army who experimented on him think he's dead.
Bucky Barnes--Still mind-controlled by Hydra, but also quite possibly dead. There's a good theory that since Hope died on a mission in Odessa in 2009, she was involved in the shootout where Natasha met the Winter Soldier. And if the Winter Soldier killed her, I imagine Hank would have gone after him even before the potential Avengers.
Defenders/Netflix MCU cluster--I haven't watched these shows, but from what I can glean online, none of them are active heroes in 2011, and the only one who has powers at the time is Jessica Jones, who is resisting her friend's pressure to take on a costumed identity. Jessica could end up being a wild card if Fury did an open call, but that doesn't seem smart when your main antagonist is the guy who rules the world.
Spider-Child--Is eleven. Also unpowered.
Dr. Strange--Still busy being an arrogant asshole surgeon (instead of an arrogant asshole wizard sorcerer).
Vision--Doesn't exist, and with Tony and Banner dead, never will.
Wakanda cluster--If I understand correctly, T'Chaka is currently the Black Panther and he is busy being a king and raising a family. Erik/N'Jadaka is unpowered and racking up kills in Black Ops. I'm not sure if a threat to the entire world (Asgardians) would be enough to lure T'Challa out of Wakanda but my gut says probably not.
Wanda and Pietro--Unpowered, supposed to be teenagers I think? May not even have been recruited to Hydra yet.
Yelena Belova and the rest of the Black Widows--Still under mind control for another five years. Possibly a wild card if she finds out who killed her sister, though she's more likely to go for murder than joining a team.
Okay, so who ARE the possibilities?
Iron Fam cluster--Pepper and Rhodey are alive and have access to Tony's tech. One of them could definitely take up Tony's legacy, and Fury knows where they live. My money is on Rhodey, since Pepper would probably be the one running all the businesses.
SHIELD agents--Fury packed the OG Avengers with two of his agents, so he definitely promotes from within. The obvious choice is Melinda May, who is established as Natasha's equal if not superior. I can only assume she wasn't on the roster from the beginning because she isn't based on a comics character and so didn't yet exist was on desk duty following the trauma of the Bahrain incident. But since her partner Coulson is alive to ask her nicely, she'd come back into the field for this. (Maria Hill, as Fury's personal deputy, would stay with SHIELD.)
That makes four.
Now for the fun part--the wild cards!
Valkyrie--Is out in space, probably already established as a bounty hunter on Sakaar. She wouldn't give a shit about Asgard or Midgard--BUT what if she already knew Carol, and joined up as a personal favor to her...?
Ava Starr (Ghost)--Has had her powers since childhood and apparently at this point was actually being used by SHIELD as an assassin. Her backstory is as horrifying as Isaiah's, frankly, and I'd like to think that she was kept secret by the Hydra side and Fury had no part in her abuse. But if he knew about her, her genuine superpowers might outweigh her mental instability so he would recruit her.
Sam Wilson--In 2011 Sam was out of the army; Riley had died and the EXO-7 Falcon project was scrapped. He could become Falcon at any time--but he seems to have been entirely off Fury's radar and had no access to his gear. He doesn't meet Steve until 2014 and that's completely by chance. BUT. If the entire world has been taken over by superpowered/magical alien beings (and that's what the Asgardians are), I can't imagine him NOT fighting back somehow. Whatever resistance there is, he'd be part of it. So he might come into contact with the Avengers that way, and if he did, he'd immediately offer his "resume" as he did to Steve in CA:TWS.
The Yellowjacket suit--The Ant-Man suit is locked in a basement, but Hank was arrested wearing the Yellowjacket suit. That gives Fury access to it, and barring it having some kind of kill switch (probably literally), he can just drop whichever agent he likes into it. I was originally thinking Coulson, but...far more evilly...what if it was Rumlow or Grant Ward...? Thus putting a Hydra mole into the Avengers from the very beginning...?
So here's my roster:
Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers
Captain America/Steve Rogers
Iron Man/James Rhodes
The Cavalry/Agent Melinda May
Valkyrie/Brunnhilde
Ghost/Ava Starr
Falcon/Sam Wilson
Yellowjacket/Grant Ward (muwhahahaha)
#marvel what if...?#what if sorta spoilers#mcu#pseudo-avengers#god that was a lot of typing for something that's interesting only to me#but i have insomnia so whatever#op

thanks for tagging me @pxrxmoore ^^ This looks cool!
feel free to answer all of them or just some of them or just ignore this all together, whatever you’re comfortable with, and then tag however many people you want!
1. what was your first encounter with fanfiction?
I think the first time I ever came across fanfiction had to be either with Paramore + other VWT bands (ATL, BVB, The Maine) on Buzznet or with Avenged Sevenfold on Wattpad. I’m leaning towards the latter because I was reading stuff on Wattpad since 2007-8 and I listened to A7X more (plus I stopped reading/listening to new A7X stuff when Jimmy died in 2009/2010 which is also around the time I became active on Buzznet). Idk, it’s been so long and that entire era of my life is extremely blurry.
2. your favourite creation of your own of all time if you create stuff (feel free to link it)?
I once made a 10 ft macrame half hitch spiral braid out of wool. Basically just braided and braided until I no longer had wool (I might have added a bit more). I think I wore it 2-3 times as a belt, but it didn’t matter. It was something cool I could do and no one knew about it.
3. what vibe are you going for with your home decor (or what vibe do you wanna go for one day, if you don’t have your own place atm)?
Don’t have my own place atm, but def something IKEA-ish, mainly whites and/or that greyish kinda light wood. I just like stuff that look pure and clean and would let my plants be the highlight. I’m thinking green minimal with lots of DIY furniture and white linens.
4. first fandom you ever joined? what was it like? on what platform did it happen?
Tbh, I feel like nothing compares to my 5sos phase so I’m gonna say 5sos. I’ve definitely been in others too (A7X, ATL, Paramore, Marvel/Tom Hiddleston, James McAvoy) but I’ve never been so immersed. Same goes for my metal bands, probably because most of them were either dead or disbanded by the time I started listening to them actively.
5. what are your sun, moon and rising signs, and do you think they make sense in relation to how you know yourself?
I’m a Gemini-Cancer cusp sun, Pisces moon and Taurus ascendant and tbh I didn’t believe in this shit very much. But the more I started reading up, the more it clicked and made sense. I feel like I’m little bits of all, the good, the bad and the ugly but there are also sides of me that you see, sides I allow you to see and sides I keep hidden very deep inside my psyche that even I hardly see them and it just makes fkn sense.
6. if you write and/or read fiction (original or fanfiction), do the tropes/plots/character types you typically seek out to read and/or write about reflect something about you as a being or how you see the world?
I don’t necessarily think they do, but they might. I’m pretty sure I have a “nurse” syndrome irl so to counteract that need to help others I read fiction where others are helped (because probably deep down underneath all of that fixing I’m doing, I need someone to fix me). And by fictive fixing I mean all kinds of fixing whether it be actual wounds or psychological healing or even socialization and sex, it doesn’t matter, I’ll read it all. I’m also a very analytical person so I love doing a psych evaluation to both the characters and the writers.
7. what is the hardest obstacle you’ve had to overcome so far in life?
There have been many and I always see the level of impact they had on me after I’ve overcome them completely and taken a few years to just dissect what happened. So I don’t know if these are the hardest but the most pivotal in my life so far have been learning how to overcome my fear of vehicles while battling depression at the same time, as well as learning how to stop feeling like I didn’t do enough to prevent someone else’s suicide.
8. what is your all time favourite song(s)?
This is really hard because I listen to too much music tbh, but let me see:
- Milice by Foltin, it’s a song in Macedonian about a girl called Milica and this guy is reminiscing about the beginning of their love, it’s just such a chill fusion song.
- Youngblood by 5sos, it basically sends me into another dimension where I feel the hurt, anger and disappointment he’s feeling as well as the helplessness of knowing you’d probably never get over this person. Yeah, his voice has that much power over me.
- Face of Melinda by Opeth, this is a part of a concept album and while the backstory is pretty dark, the melody is so soft and serene and temperamental and violent at times, I just love it so fkn much.
- Nobody’s Wife by Anouk because we all have those badass bitch songs and mine happens to be this gem, followed by You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette.
- Outlines by All Time Low, idk what’s the deal with this song but it came out during the time when I was young but felt very old and I just couldn’t find my place in the world so I replayed the shit out of it and it somehow helped me heal.
9. what do you look for in a person you wanna keep in your life, be it a friend or a romantic partner or anything in between?
I kinda don’t look for anything in particular I just look for traits that would piss me off and say buh-bye to those people from the get go. Like... I need ppl to be politically aware and vocal, but not politically blinded, I need them to be eco-conscious and I need them to hate capitalism as much as I do. I need them to be modern thinkers but not to a point where they believe and stand for every fad coming from Western civilization. Basically someone grounded and being able to evaluate the situation without being constantly swayed by others’ opinions. Some might call it stubborn, but I really think that globalization has made us lose the good side of our ego. The part that makes us stand for something we truly believe in and not just be another sheep in the herd.
10. this is a bit of a difficult one, but have you ever had a moment of clarity, a conversation with someone that made you go “oh!”, or anything along those lines?
It’s happened a few times, but I’m really self-reflective so those things are to be expected of me. The last one I remember was around March last year and I was in group grief therapy and the psychiatrist was basically talking about how to deal with grief and suicide prevention and how talking helps and we talked about dreams and overall health and such and during those conversations he talked about PTSD and what helps to alleviate the symptoms and get over it and my EUREKA! moment came when I realized I’ve been healing my PTSD unknowingly on my own for the past 5 years. Basically that was such a great experience and it put so many things in perspective for me. I mean I come from a society where all things mental health are brushed under the carpet as if they don’t exist. And I’m definitely not the type of person to label shit and feel helpless because I can’t fix it. If anything, I’d def get angry and try to fix it myself because I hate being in limbo. And hearing someone voice my thoughts and fears and tell me that I’ve been doing great was just... Idk, felt like a pat on the back and a tight hug at the same time.
tagging @karajaynetoday @krindy33 @twilightmomentswithyou @tigerteeff @myloverboyash @talkfastromance4 @notinthesameguey @ashtonlftv if you want to do this or haven’t done this before :*

One of those iconic games from the late 80s & early 90s. Chip's Challenge is a game that championed the computer geek and logic puzzles. A launch title for the Atari Lynx in 1989, even today it still remains a must have game for the system. However, it's fair to say it wasn't until the later home computer ports for the PC and Amiga did the game become a house hold name.
Chip's dream is to join the Bit Buster club and win the heart of Melinda the Mental Marvel. Designed by Chuck Sommerville, Chip's Challenge is a highly addictive puzzle game that requires Chips to clear 144 stages. While the goal is to just get to the exit, most stages require you collect a set number of microchips before you can reach the exit.

Bring to a Simmer
Pairing: Jaime x MC
Word Count: 2,200
Summary: Arden attempts to make the inaugural batch of ‘Dad and Arden’s Stroganoff,’ but with Jaime around, staying focused is more easily said than done.
Note: This is just a silly little oneshot inspired by some optional dialogue from the “remembering mom” diamond scene in Chapter 13. I thought it could be a fun premise for a story, especially with a side of Jaime Lewis there to spice things up. Gosh, I’m going to miss this book.
This also fulfills a request I received for kiss prompt #8 (the playful kiss on the tip of the nose).
“I’ve got the onion sliced, pumpkin.”
Up to her elbows in flour, Arden looked over her shoulder toward to check her father’s progress at the breakfast table. “Great! I’ll bring the mushrooms over in just a minute.”
Turning her attention back to the recipe card in front of her, she mashed at the sticky dough again. It never looks this way on Bake Off, she considered, worrying her inner cheek against her teeth. But then again, they’re usually making pastry, not pasta. The thought made her feel slightly better, but she still had very little faith that the pasty substance before her was going to end up resembling anything close to her mother’s stroganoff noodles.
She pried one hand away from the clumpy mass, grimacing at the feeling of her very messy fingers sticking to the paper of the flour bag. How had her mom always managed to make cooking look so easy? Even a simple four-ingredient pasta dough was enough to tempt Arden toward a delivery service.
It’s not about the finished product, she reminded herself. This is about remembering mom and making new memories.
Picking at the excess lumps of dough from between her fingers, she wondered how she’d keep her father involved in the process once all of the ingredients had been chopped. His leg had been particularly bad today, which meant that he couldn’t spend much time on his feet without his trusty cane by his side. Unfortunately, canes and cooking didn’t mix particularly well.
“Can you see Jaime working out there?”
She smiled at his inquiry, lifting her eyes momentarily to catch a glimpse of the man at their fence line. Yep, he’s hard at it. You’ll be really happy with how it looks, dad. I promise.”
“Your mother would have put me in the dog house if she’d seen how bad I let it get. I just…” His voice grew wistful as the sentence trailed, and Arden had to take a deep breath to steady herself.
“It just didn’t seem as important without her around. I think she’d forgive you.”
The front yard had been a point of contention ever since her mother had fallen ill. Melinda Gale had always taken great pride in her plants, the perfect picket fence, her trailing ivy – all things that Harry only tended to on her behalf. In recent years, the yard had been gradually falling into a state of disrepair.
Thank goodness for Jaime and his powers of persuasion. He’d been gently nudging for several months, and after coming home from the hospital, her father was finally ready to accept the offer. Arden was just glad that the matter had been resolved without too much nagging on her part.
That’s not all I’m grateful for, she mused, sneaking another glance out the window.
She’d known Jaime was attractive for years, but if possible, he’d grown even more gorgeous to her in the past week. Maybe it was because she’d been out of work and had had more time to appreciate him. Maybe it was because she’d seen every inch of him on the night after the gubernatorial debate and knew exactly what was hiding underneath those work clothes. Or maybe it was because she loved him. That word still made her pulse skip every time she thought it.
Beyond being very nice to look at and prompting irregular heartbeats, he was also incredibly skilled at repairing fences. In a single afternoon, he’d managed to replace the missing and broken pickets, paint the entirety, and purchase new balusters for the front porch. His abilities seemed to go on without end.
Arden’s own talents felt questionable at the moment, though her hands were becoming less laden with dough the more she rolled and patted the clump into submission. She gave it a final smack, drawing her hand away slowly to determine whether the consistency was ready for rolling.
Although she’d never assisted her mother in the process of making dough, she did have an idea, more or less, of what the final result should look like. The mass on the counter wasn’t an exact replica, but she didn’t think that her attempt was too far off.
At the table, her dad inhaled a sharp breath, but it was several long moments before his words came. “I’m glad you talked me into this, honey. I think your mom would probably get a kick out of watching our struggles in the kitchen.”
“So do I.” Smiling faintly at the thought, she sidestepped to the sink and began the chore of cleaning her hands.
“And she’d be even happier to see how well you and Jaime are getting along these days."
Arden yanked the kitchen towel a little harder than intended, causing the cabinet door it hung from to squeal in protest.
Her father clearly needed something else to keep him occupied.
Carrying in the colander of button mushrooms, she set them before the man without a word. As she traded him for the plate of onion slices, she caught the mischievous grin slanting its way up his face.
"I’m not as blind as you think I am, Arden.”
“I know.”
“And he’s been looking at you like he wants to haul you off and marry you."
She knew that too.
Thankfully, her back was turned by in time to hide the blush spreading over her cheeks. "We’re still figuring things out,” she answered evasively. Pulling the largest pot from the oven drawer, she set about filling it in the sink.
“I know I promised not to tell you how to live your life anymore, but he’s the only man I know who’s good enough for my Arden.” She ought to just kiss him sometime. She’s been half in love with him since they were kids.
Arden pretended not to hear his thought or his comment over the running water. Her father might claim to have seen things, but he’d missed an awful lot of kisses that had passed between them in the last couple of weeks. Beyond that, he didn’t have the faintest idea that she’d spent the night next door after the insanity of the debate. As she waited for the pot to fill, she snuck another look through the glass.
Jaime was removing his shirt.
Her skin flushed again at the sight of his toned, tanned body. Her hands ached to glide along those perfect abs – to wrap her arms around his neck so she was pressed flush against the heat of his chest. Sleeping with him had been incredible. Waking up in his arms, nothing short of divine.
They hadn’t discussed their plans for after dinner, but maybe she could talk him into another sleepover…
With a start, she realized that the water was spilling over the side of the pot. She drained the excess quickly, vaguely aware of the sporadic sound of chopping coming from the breakfast table.
Her father didn’t say anything, but there was a distinct twinkle in his eye when she returned to the table with the beef.
_____
Thirty minutes later, she’d managed to produce something that vaguely resembled stroganoff. Arden counted it as something of a marvel that she hadn’t given up the whole cooking endeavor in favor of just standing and staring out the window. She knew he wasn’t doing it deliberately, but Jaime had been putting on quite a show.
Wielding a paintbrush, standing back to consider his work, wiping his brow – everything he did set her blood on fire. As the evening had worn on, the pan before her received less and less of her attention. The sight through the window had proven too tempting for her to resist.
His work on the fence complete, Jaime had switched to trimming the bushes in front of the house. As he skirted around the plant, she caught his eye. Arden sucked a breath at his wink.
"I’ll be right back,” she promised her father, hardly taking the time to make sure that he was still cutting romaine hearts for their salad.
Jaime’s eyes were on her as soon as she passed through the door, the shears falling to his side. “The view from the kitchen wasn’t enough, I see. Did you decide it was time to get up close and personal?”
She rolled her eyes. When she looked up at him again, she was taken aback by the glisten of sweat all over him. With his chest mere inches from her face, she could discern each perfectly sculpted ab, and her fingers twitched with longing at her side. Arden wondered idly how much it would scandalize the neighbors if she started making out with him in her father’s front yard.
Still not prepared for this view?
She reddened at his thought as their eyes met, his sweaty hair obscuring vision from one side. “I’m still getting used to...” she gestured vaguely at his stomach, much to Jaime’s amusement. “But I actually came out to give you a dinner update. It all just needs to simmer for about twenty more minutes and then we’ll be ready to eat.”
“I’m looking forward to it. I should reach a pretty good stopping place shortly, so I’ll have time for a quick shower before we eat.”
Arden’s mouth grew very dry at the appealing mental images his suggestion graced her with. Distracted, her gaze wavered from his face for a moment – not long enough to satisfy her desire, but certainly long enough to attract his notice.
"You keep looking at my chest, Arden. Is everything okay?” Not that I mind. I’ve only been hoping for this for years.
Knowing she’d been caught, Arden dropped all pretense and stared openly. She sighed and lifted her face to his. “I’m just thinking again how much I’d like to kiss you right now.”
Jaime bristled with pleasure. “You wouldn’t get any complaints from me if you did, but I am pretty sweaty at the moment. We should probably wait until after dinner.”
Someday, she’d have to tell him that she didn’t mind him being sweaty. In fact, she’d found sweaty kisses with Jaime to be extremely enjoyable just a few nights before. With that memory in mind, she was inspired. “Can I just have one for now?”
He ran a hand through his hair, uncovering both eyes. The deep brown pools were gleaming with equal parts humor and desire. “I thought you’d never ask.”
Arden tilted her chin, lips poised and eager for contact. Jaime’s mouth was warm and soft as it descended on hers, the salt of his sweat making her relish the experience even more. Body responding of its own volition, she had to pinch herself to keep from throwing both arms around his neck. Even after he’d pulled away, it took a moment for her to regain full control of her senses.
Just as her head cleared Jaime caught her by surprise, leaning down a second time to brush his lips gently across the tip of her nose.
She wrinkled the bridge instinctively. “What was that for?”
“I couldn’t help it,” he explained. “You’re just so damn kissable, Arden.”
“So are you. Please tell me there will be time for more kisses later?”
“I was hoping you’d suggest that.” He stretched out his free hand, skimming the pads of his fingers along her forearm.
“The mind-blowing, earth-shaking kisses that are full of ten years of pent-up desire?”
He chuckled at her description. “You know those are my favorites. And I don’t have any plans for the rest of the night.”
“Mmmhmmm.” His little half smile was doing funny things to her stomach. It wasn’t long before she’d lost all track of what he’d been saying.
Should I put my shirt back on?
His thought managed to get her attention, and she recoiled. “Don’t even joke about that. I’m enjoying the view way too much.”
“You can enjoy it as much as you want after dinner.”
“That feels like too long to wait.” She took another step toward him, forgetting both sweat and propriety in her need to touch him.
“Arden,” he cautioned, though she knew from the yearning on his face that he wasn’t going to tell her no.
Was that the door?
His thought corresponded with a click from the porch, followed by the beat of her father’s cane.
Their heads swung toward the doorway where Harry Gale stood, watching them both with an arched brow. Maybe she doesn’t need my encouragement after all... After taking a moment to collect himself, he announced, “Your pan boiled over. I got it off the burner, but I’m not sure what to do next.”
Arden stared at him dumbly. “I was just….I, um.” She swallowed hard and forced her thoughts away from the man beside her. “I’ll come figure it out.”
Her father retreated back to the house, leaving her alone with Jaime once more.
“Go do what you need to do with dinner. I’ll finish up here and be in in a few minutes,” he told her, trailing a finger along her inner palm. Before she could pull away, he gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.
“See you then,” she promised, breaking the link between them. As she hurried up the porch stairs, she decided that an addition to her mother’s recipe was in order:
Step 1 - If Jaime is outside, close curtains on the kitchen window.

Marvel's Runaways- an example of a BAD idea
So imagine you wanted to a great comic book show. You buy a great cheap comic so you break the bank. But then you feel the pressure to have your loved characters appeal to a more modern audience. But there is a rift between the movie universe and the TV universe. So now you are left with a half baked story filled with holes and it is almost unrecognizable to the comics. Let us also not forget their horrible idea of re-writing the perspectives for the mass audiences. This is how you get the "cringy" monster that is the Hulu's adaptation of Runaways.
The first thing you must understand before tackling Runaways is that this Marvel property is heavily ingrained into the Marvel universe. In fact, one character from the comic book cast is the son of Ultron. Ultron, who MCU wrote off as someone short series of events. Then that means that most of the events that occur in the comics become void. This leads to a rewriting of the events that occur in the TV show.
I broke the aspects of this ongoing show into three parts : Angst- the teen and the parent, stereotypes- I promise we're different, dialogue- Who am I?
“I had choosen the path of the black sheep rather than that of the unicorns and puppies.”
― Magenta Periwinkle, Cutting Class
Angst- The teen and the parent
When you are first introduced to the nouveau-rich families of PRIDE you see parents with a wide range of jobs. This includes tech mongers, bio-chemists, and even spiritual leaders. By each family you see various color schemes graced across the screen. I assumed this TV show would be promising. Until you meet the children. I first became frustrated by the dynamics of the children. They're all stereotypes written out of a high school rom-com. At least for shows that Have stereotypes like Daria you understand they're there to be unrealistic and mellow-dramatic. However this idea isn't valid for Runaways. The show is supposed to be relatable and fanciful at the same time. They're also not stereotypes in the graphic novel they're just themselves. This adds angst to the angst . Which this edgy behavior is supposed to replace the depth in their character. Take the biggest example of this: Nico. Her stereotype is that she's a goth so she's mean and does witchcraft and always cries about dead sister. Then in the later seasons she's hopelessly devoted to Karolina and this is supposed to add depth to her one dimensional personality. Her senitive love for Karolina is supposed to add depth- I just...No,no, no, UGH, Stop, please. I can't with her. The big thing that makes her DEEP is that she's actually sensitive and gay. They use queer-bating to have her be more appealing. Then her stereotypical goth-ness solidifies the Goth norm-perception, it says,"Yes all goths are this way. They're all tortured and filled with teenage melodramatic behavior.".Her Wicca worship is another Goth stereotype. As a goth myself I do not condone the stereotypes that aren't accurate. I wish her character was more inspired like Abby from NCIS. The actor wantesd the character to be more authentic and not just a stereotype like numerous other shows have. Just no. Every time she slams her door a front of her mother's face or steals her mother's staff I'm just dumbfounded.
Karolina is the church girl stereotype. She waltzes across your screen in all white and reads Her bible-I-mean-her-religious-texts-that-don't-sound-like-Christianity-at-all. Then when she's tempted by the flesh of the witch! Oh no will they, Won't they? Spoiler alert: They will as we assumed with horrible LGBTQ+ characters as always. Her depth is her love for Nico. To the amount that her dreams while she's trapped in the first two episiodes of season three was her wedding with Nico. Granted it was goregous but her love is her character depth which is dissapointing since their relationship ends in season three. They're both always moody and mad at each other but it's fine they love each other even though they only give each other a few pecks once in a while. Like don't make the mass audience mad cause we can't have too much gay! HAHA! For me it's less for the LGBTQ+ masses or to show representation it's written to sound and look pretty for the male gaze but hey!
That's just me spreading my SJW bias like Gert does 24/4! Like is there an off button. Introducing the liberal complete with crippling anxiety and even "NO! I can't love a Lacrosse Jock! I hate the Patriarchy!". While no one shows up for her rally or her bakes sales she crushes over Chase who is rude to her. My father being heavily left-leaning said "Gert needs to go. Like she doesn't stop talking and ruins the show!". Like when I told him I was watching the new season he frantically asked why and asked if I was okay.
I'm getting off track. Anyway, The point is the only ones that love their family to start is Molly, Gertrude and Chase. But don't worry the only one that still loves her parents after is Molly (in some twisted way I guess Karolina.....ehhh). After seeing their parents kill a kid and shove them into a magical space tube instead of calling the police or rationally acting. They gain this amazing attribute called teenage angst. Except for Molly cause she doesn't get it. Granted the first season isn't that bad but the show only gets worse the farther you go into it. I especially have been carrying a special amount of disdain for season two. But I think that maybe the new season has promise since the teenage angst doesn't smell as bad so far but I'll give you guys an update on Tumblr. What was I saying ...So if you don't understand what I mean by the heavy angst take a new scene from season three when Dale (her dad) Has Gert hostage in their cottage. She goes on numerous rants on How much she hates him when like a year ago she was being somewhat rational by trying to think before she shouts and finger wag at her parents but now-speak your mind child! I find the teen vs. parent atmosphere.
However This idea of teenage angst isn't unrealistic. But how general it is over every character is what makes the angst unrealistic. The original hesitation of Gert makes it feel more natural. Karolina's almost disregard to what they saw originally felt more real. The small responses from characters separates their personalities and makes season one much more entertaining.
Stereotypes- I promise we're different
Now that you understand the edgy personality of the show as a whole let's move on to the content. You're introduced to a runaway teenager named Destiny she's mugged but "rescued" by the Church of Gibborim. Little do we realize these muggers were trying to save her. Six months later we're introduced to Alex Wilder, a stereotypical nerd, who loves coding. Nico Minoru the person Alex has a crush; her sister died who was Alex's best friend, so now Nico's a goth. Okay, that's a lot. You then meet Gert, Chase and, Molly. Molly is younger then everyone else so she is disregarded when she tells everyone to become friends. Chase is a lacrosse jock but he's different cause he's smart I guess. Chase loves his family but his dad is emotionally abusive to him and his mom. It gives Chase a leader mentality and he tends to think he knows the right answer.
Gert is a social justice warrior who tries to make her school a better place. But she's different cause she has anxiety. Tell me if my point isn't getting across, tell me. This show's "thing" is that everyone's a stereotypes but, they're different, I guess;Which would usually be fine if it wasn't apart of such a big intellectual property: Marvel. Granted when it comes to movies and TV I never said Marvel story-lines were ever complex but the shows always Go outside the prior assumptions, it's not all stereotypes.
Take for instance, Agents of Shield. Take Coulson who literally was resurrected fro the dead. He is hard and stern like he was depicted in the movies but we learn about his strife and how he worked alongside Nick to build S.H.I.E.L.D. to what it is. He has control issues so he has to adopt the mindset that Nick has. It's new and interesting to the MCU audience. Melinda May, is an Ace pilot and personally my favorite simply due to her character writing. Her divide between her reputation versus who she is. She's known as " The Calvary" after all. She has trauma from a mission that killed a civilian which leaves her emotionally scared. This isn't a new concept but seeing her grow and becoming better emotionally gives the audience connections to the characters.
Every character is written with steady care and good character writing. We feel sad When Coulson dies yet again. We feel the inner turmoil Skye and May feel. The connection isn't there in these hollow stereotypes. The connection to the audience in Runaways is what's making the show stale. The TV show characters are pale imitations of the comic book characters. It's hurts the show in the long run.
dialogue-Who am I?
The most important thing that makes this show salvageable is the dialogue. No, I don't only mean the words coming out their mouths but the story-line that's surprisingly controlled by the parents. The superficial cold teenagers that only show disdain towards their parents and easily toppled by their Parents beckoning and call. For instance in season 2, Chase betrays his whole team to have his family back after his dad dies. He thinks they'll lose so quickly when he's left alone with them. You see their guard come down so quickly around their providers. Yet they can never forgive them. This is obvious in Alex's case. His hatred towards his parents lead him to the arms of his father's enemy become's angry when his mother retaliates and kills Darius, but is vexed when his father is calling him. Responds just by his mother threatens him from jail in season three. Why does Nico stop to talk to her Dad in season three, episode "Lord of Lies". I'm going to keep watching just because of the dynamic of the kids and parents. Especially as the parents are inhabited by parasitic aliens it's changes this complex dynamic yet again. Along with Nico's inner turmoil involving her magic and the forces that are utilized with her staff headlines the dialogue and plot I love so much. I will continue to watch as this tale unfolds.
Conclusion: This show is complex recycling heap. I find it hard to watch and a grotesque figure I can't move away from. I find it a good surface level adaptation. I find it messy but it's not entirely predictable! I appreciate how invested the actors are in their characters! I hope to continue watching the show to see how the plot moves.
