important update on mr Luckypie and Condom Fleaman!
so they ARE actually Melanotaenia praecox!!
i messaged a guy that i bought plants from, and he said that he has them! bruh the answer was so simple all along, i just didnt bother asking him before cuz he didnt have them in the pics on his store page 🤦
and i was starting to get really confused too cuz they dont look like any other rainbowfish, but none of the places i asked before had them
this is actually amazing news cuz now i know they can live in my community tank, and i dont have to buy another for them!!
and no, i wont show it to u until i redecorate it cuz it has ugly aah blue gravel, old driftwood that i bought years ago, and is overgrown with algae.

What's a good amount of space for a rainbow fish (NOT TROUT)
Really depends on the species here, so be careful if you go to a big chain fish store and only the common name is on the tag. Melanotaenia praecox and Melanotaenia ladegesi could probably do well in a 30g but other Melanotaenia species would need at least 50g Threadfin rainbows (Iriatherina werneri) would do well in a 20g

"Dwarf rainbowfish are generally the same size as or smaller than neons. Wouldn't try them with anything that could fit them in its mouth."
We might be thinking of different species. I am specifically referring to Melanotaenia praecox, which is usually in the 2-3 inch range as adults. Though I do agree not to add in very small specimens with a large Gudgeon.
This is always a concern with non-scientific names for animals :)
Best tankmates for peacock gudgeons? They seem really neat but I can't find a lot of concrete info about them as a community fish.
Sorry for delays in responding! I'm just bad at things.
You're not wrong - these are uncommon fish so concrete info can be hard to find. Let's review the basics though... Peacock Gudgeons are sleeper gobies that get up to about 3 inches long, prefer middling water qualities (pH 6.5-7.5) and lower tropical temps (72-77F). They aren't really aggressive, I'd just avoid pairing with fish they can eat whole. I was reminded of that recently with a 3 inch Knight Goby I placed with younger tetras... welp.
With this in mind, I would recommend them with similar size peaceful tankmates: Cory cats, platies, more robust tetras (lemons, hatchets, penguins, maybe larger Priscillas - not neons or cardinals), dwarf rainbowfish, kuhli loaches. Maybe larger blue-eyes. Avoid dwarf cichlids and the snappier anabantoids.
