Saturday 13th April 2024
Another beautiful day so on good advice we made our way to the old harbour in time to see the fishing fleet return at 10.00am. Apparently when the boats arrive, 6 resident stingrays also appear. Huge they are: as tall as a man. Sadly there was no sign of either, so we followed the second bit of advice from our landlady and walked along firstly the boardwalk and then the beach for as far as our Start-Rite shoes would take us. The sun shone and the pastel colours of the beach and the sea were stunning. What a fantastic part of the world this is! An angling club was having a bit of a competition; rods and lines were everywhere. It seemed that most members were policemen so hopefully there was no crime in these parts today. Occasionally a cry went up and officials had to verify a catch. We witnessed a sand shark being landed. Wasn't huge, but apparently it counted. After a flap or two on the sand it was ceremoniously returned to its watery home. Also in abundance on the beach were an invasion of Portuguese Men of War left high and dry, marooned for all time by the receding tide. I might mention also the snake, but identification was difficult.
We checked again on return to the harbour for the presence of stingrays but once again we felt let down by their absence. I'm told the fishing fleet may not have gone out due to the turbulence at sea, therefore stingrays remained buried in the sand, as they do.
After luncheon, following yet further instructions from the landlady, we again put the VW through its paces with specific attention this time to suspension on unmade-up roads, and then in full Virginia Woolf fashion, 'To the Lighthouse'. We clambered up all 71 steps within it to view the light and walk the balcony, perhaps despite the concern of the girl in the ticket office who seemed to have doubts we might make it up and down safely. We could see she was much relieved when after 20 minutes or so her charges returned none the worse for wear despite the inclination of all the steps and ladders required to negotiate. Installed 1st March 1849, 31m high, at a cost of £15,871 with a 400W bulb that flashes every 5 secs, the lighthouse has a range of 31 nautical miles. It was esigned by Col.C Mitchell, Surveyor General of the Cape Colony in a style of the Pharos of Alexandria in Egypt. Well with a design of that provenance it should have fixed the problem for good, however on 16th November 1982 in a terrible storm, a 45m Japanese trawler, Meisho Maru No 38 hit rocks close to the lighthouse so hard it broke up and is still there. Well, I guess there's always one isn't there? All of this is bang on the Southern most point in Africa, named Ponts de Sao Brandao by Bartholomew Dias the well known Portuguese Mariner when he happened to pass by on 16th May 1488, and marks the official position where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic. Both sides look the same to me but I'm sure the fish know the difference. That name didn't stick too long because it was renamed in 1502, Capo Das Agulhas meaning 'Needles' after the sharp looking rocks nearby. Now since 1972 just called Cape Agulhas for short. The exact location has been a bit of a discussion issue since 1836, so recently the International Hydrographical Organisation waded in and said that's it, not discussing this any more it's slap bang on the longitudinal line 20°E. End of.... Oh ok then....
Talking of fish, we then went to the Trattoria for a superb lemon sole fish supper. Well, I had that but Martine thought some form of pasta would be preferable. Very nice it was too. We had a bottle of SB on ice back at the motor pool to wash it down with. Great day. Tomorrow we move further along the Garden Route coast.

The Clockwork Man Chapter 2: Sakurasou
Notes: This is part of a bigger story project dedicated to Teru Mikami's past. It's still in the rough draft stage, so things may be subject to change. Please leave feedback if you enjoyed, it would encourage me greatly.
Middle school was another matter entirely. The more I confronted evil the more enemies I had to face. Victims would become participants and even the people watching would be influenced by evil and become enemies themselves. But for justice to triumph, it requires action so I realized to serve justice I had to delete evil.
Flute music blended into the spring atmosphere, where it was blue from the sky, bright green from the grass, and pink from the cherry blossom trees all reflected in the clear water running through the stream. Although Teru always loved his mother’s compositions, he could not help but think, this particular one, Sakurasou, had a sad tone to it.
His mother explained to him that she intended it to be that way because, sometimes, the most beautiful things in life were sad. At the time, Teru could not really understand what his mother meant by this. As he watched the cherry blossom petals fall from the trees and drift through the water, he wondered what middle school would bring.
—April 1st, Meisho Year 15, a new semester of Toyogaoka Middle School begins—
The teacher of the First Year, Class B introduced himself as Mashimo-sensei, and required every student in the class standup at their seat and give a short introduction about his/herself which consisted of their name and/or if they had any nicknames, their elementary school, and their hobbies.
Teru listened attentively as each boy and girl in his class stood up and gave their introductions. When it became his turn, Teru began, “I’m Mikami Teru. I attended Birakoshi Elementary School. My hobby is reading. Good to meet you.”
As Teru sat down, he heard one of the boys who sat behind him, Shibuki Soshu, snickered and muttered, “Nerd.”
That was only the beginning.
Shibuki, along with Haruno, Mikajima, and Oye went on to harass and attack Sakai Noboru, whom Teru tried to defend, but in the end, both Noboru and Teru became a bloody mess on the boy’s bathroom floor. The four boys beat people up, stole things, and broke school property but got away with it, because of a lack of evidence, but Teru knew.
By the end of the first week, Shibuki Soshu, Haruno Kyuichi, Mikajima Hachigoro, and Oye Junzo four of the worst delinquents, established themselves to be the “rulers” and the worst troublemakers of the class, maybe even of the entire freshman grade.
One afternoon, because the weather was warm and sunny, Teru thought about having his lunch on the benches of the school grounds. But when lunchtime came around, his bento had been stolen. There had been no way to find out who had stolen his lunch, it was as though it had vanished. However, Teru had suspicions it could have been the works of Shibuki, Haruno, Mikajima, and Oye.
Teru sat on the bench, frustrated, trying to figure out when and how it could have been taken from him. He was determined to take on all four of them if he had to, even if he did get beaten up again like last week when he ended up with a bloody nose from getting punched too many times and his glasses crushed by Oye.
While Teru was sitting hunched over, angrily staring at the floor, a shadow came into his line of sight. Teru turned to his right to see it was a girl, who had to be one of the upperclassmen because she looked big—taller than him and definitely passed 13 or 14 years old. She had wild, untamed dark brown hair, wide eyes, and was smiling which made Teru subconsciously soften his expression.
“Hey there! Is the seat beside you taken?” she asked.
“No... go ahead.” Teru answered as he moved further right to make room for her to sit.
“Thanks,” she continued in her bubbly voice.
Teru gazed at her for a moment, but remembering it was rude to stare, he looked back straight ahead.
“You’re not going to eat? Or, you finished your lunch already?” the girl asked him.
Teru looked back at her and responded, “No, I... lost it.”
The wild-haired girl’s expression went from happy to sympathetic.
“I’m sorry to hear that,” she responded automatically. She then held out her wrapped bento towards Teru and continued, “Here. You can have mine.”
Teru’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Are you sure? Then, you won’t have anything to eat.”
The girl smiled once more, giggled, cleared her throat and joking said, “It’s okay, it’s the senior’s responsibility to take care of our younger ones. Go ahead, you don’t have to hesitate! I hope you like tamagoyaki, okura, and fishcake though.”
Teru bowed his head to her and thanked her as he accepted her lunch. He hesitantly unwrapped the bento box, took out her chopsticks and ate her lunch slowly.
“It tastes delicious.” Teru then said.
“I’m glad you like it!” the girl said with her smile that made him feel warm inside.
“Senpai, what’s your name?” Teru asked reluctantly, but he felt like he had to know.
“Hm? Oh, I’m Asakura Shoko. “Asakura,” spelled with the Kanji of “morning” and “warehouse.” “Shoko,” as in “shinning” and “child.” What’s yours?”
“I’m Mikami Teru. “Mikami,” as in “Mi” the Kanji from the word “bewitched,” and “kami” as in “above.” “Teru” is spelled with the same Kanji as your first name, “shinning.” He answered shyly.
“Wow! We share that one Kanji. I’m bad with remembering people’s names, but that makes it easier for me to remember yours!” Shoko said cheerfully.
But it matches you unlike me...You actually shine...when you smile, I can’t breathe. Teru thought to himself as he watched her face.
“So, what do you like to do for fun?”
Teru had to think for a moment before answering her question.
“I like reading, mostly. I enjoy the Morphbots manga, but I watch the anime too. But I... don’t have any specific favorite book or genre, I tend to read anything I can get my hands on. What about you?”
Shoko then crossed her arms, held her chin with her left hand, and looked up at the sky and said, “Hmmm. Definitely watching Godzilla movies and drawing!”
Teru was somewhat let down by her answer. He did not like Godzilla because Godzilla is not justice.
“Asakura-senpai, why do you like Godzilla?” Teru asked curiously, trying to hide the disappointment in his voice.
“Because, his designs are so cool!” Shoko said enthusiastically, going into full-Godzilla fan mode.
“Have you seen Godzilla Y? Or Space Godzilla?”
Instead of feeling clarified, Teru felt even more confused.
“But if he was real, he would step on you. He’s not a nice guy,” He reasoned.
Shoko stared at him for moment, but broke into a giggle.
Her laugh is so charming...her smile...she’s pretty, maybe even beautiful...and perfect in every way... He thought as he watched her longingly.
“You should know, Godzilla saves humanity sometimes.”
Then Teru thinks, That’s not good enough, a hero has to save people all the time.
Teru noticed that lunchtime was almost over, he knew he didn’t want to give Shoko her bento box back without washing it clean first.
“Wait here, I’ll be right back.” Teru says to Shoko.
He rushed to one of the faucets outside, he washes Shoko’s bento box and chopsticks the best he could and dries it with his handkerchief. He wraps and ties it with her lunch cloth and rushes back to Shoko.
He hands it back to her. Shoko accepts it with a grin and says, “Thanks.”
“No. I should be the one thanking you. It was good, senpai.” Teru blushes and looks down at the floor.
“You don’t have to call me ‘senpai,’ just ‘Shoko’ is fine.”
“But that’s...It seems too casual.”
The school bell rang which indicated that lunch was over. Shoko, before turning around waves goodbye and says to him, “Well, it was nice meeting you, Teru. I guess I’ll see you around.”
“It was...so good to meet you, too.” Teru stammered as he sadly watched her leave. He missed her even before her figure was lost in the crowd of other third years.
When Teru went back to class, he had forgotten all about trying to find who stole his lunch. His thoughts were replaced by her.
Shoko Asakura, who was as lovely as the sakurasou blossoms. The perfect girl. He wished he could eat her delicious cooking every day. He wished he could call her his lover, his wife.
That night he had dreamed about her. In his dream, he heard her laughter, he could see her naked from head to toe but she vanished as soon as she had appeared. He was lost in the woods and no matter how far he went, how fast he ran, he could never catch up to her.
Teru woke up that morning feeling simultaneously wonderful and sorrowful. He finally understood what his mother meant when she said in life, sometimes the most beautiful things were sad. Because Teru knew Shoko most likely had forgotten all about him already.
He knew Shoko wouldn’t be interested in him, someone like her must have had countless admirers. Not to mention Shoko herself probably had a crush on another guy, someone probably older and shines just as much as she does.
But, so what? Teru thought.
Even if she never likes me back, it doesn’t mean I can’t express my love to her in some way. I can do it in a way she doesn’t have to know that I’m the one who admires her. She deserved to know that she is loved, regardless.
With that, he takes the best quality paper he can find in his desk, a pen, and writes his first anonymous love letter to her
Notes: I wanted to imagine a scenario where Mikami falls for a woman who doesn't normally seem like his "type." After all, I don't think it is impossible for Mikami to have a crush on a bubbly, extroverted girl. I hope I was able to write the scenario in a believable way, though. And to clarify, in case you have never heard of "Sakurasou," it is the name of the Japanese Primrose. I chose this flower for its symbolic meaning of "eternal love." The source is here in case you want to take a look. Last but not least, a big thank you for reading this. 😊

About Reproducing of "Awa Province: Naruto Whirlpools (Awa, Naruto no fûha), from the series Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces (Rokujûyoshû meisho zue)".
I these days made a reproduction in collaboration with Cool Japan, a Japanese goods store in France.
So I would like to introduce the reproducing process in this article.
The original print was designed by Hiroshige Utagawa in ca.1855.
①Concept
The concept of this reproducing is completely different from the one I have introduced so far in this blog, and it is a "reproduction including aging."
In particular, for this time, I assumed the original print that is in good condition .
②About the original picture.
The original picture was selected from an art book, which seems to be the first impression or close to that. That is judged by the degree of wear of the key block line or the number of colors. The closer to the later edition, it tends that the more the lines become worn out and become softer, more crumbly, and the more colors are omitted.
(At least in Japanese law, there basically is no copyright in ukiyo-e from the Edo period, but depending on the photography method or editing etc. used as making ukiyo-e art books etc., the copyright of the person concerned is occurred. Some ukiyo-e art books are marked with a prohibiting copying or reproducing , but I do not to use such items. However, depending on the sources of collection, there would be where even if they did not express their intention to prohibit copying when they published the art book in the past, but they at the present do so and request the application as copying from their past art book.)
Although I have not had any direct touching experience with the original print of this time, but I own the original print of "Tôtômi Province" from the same series, that is a later edition with good condition. So I used that as a reference when determining the texture of the paper or the degree of aged processing.
③About the materials
The woodblocks are usually made of wild cherry , but due to budget constraints, this time I used magnolia and china veneer woodblocks, which are softer than wild cherry woodblocks.
The paper I used this time was selected from among the washi papers that are generally available on the market, that is cheap but looks like that as much as possible.
At that time, I paid particular attention to the thinness of the paper.
Generally, original prints from the Edo period are often used thin paper, unlike contemporary reproduction prints. The aforementioned "Tôtômi" which I used as a reference this time was also a paper so thin that it was difficult to hold it normally.
I chose such paper for this reproducing.
And, I used modern chemical pigments that are commonly used by the printers for reproducing.
④About carving and printing
What I was especially careful about was not to make the print beautifully according to the sensibilities and skill standards of modern carvers and printers, but to match it to the skill level of the original print. In reproducing by modern carvers and printers, mistakes in the original prints are often corrected, and it is common to be made more beautifully than the original.
However, looking back at their reproductions that have been made so far, I consider that such advancement in skill standards is one of the main factors that makes the difference of impression between the original prints and reproductions. Considering that ukiyo-e prints in the Edo period were produced speedily at a low profit high sales, everyone from the master to the apprentices were involved for making one work, the skill level of carvers and printers improved significantly since the Meiji period, and so on, I think even in the first impression of the first edition, there are to be roughness parts, in ukiyoe of the Edo period. And such roughness is a characteristic of the skill of ukiyoe of the Edo period, I think.
(In addition to that, I consider other factors are the differences of the materials of paints and paper, and aging. And, since even if an old reproduction which has aged considerably over time, there are many cases where it is possible to tell that it is a reproduction, so I think the difference in aging is a secondary factor, and the primary factor is the differences in the materials and the skill quality of carving and printing. )
In this reproducing, I tried to reproduce as much as possible the technical mistakes found in the original print, as long as they do not cause any major hindrance to appreciating.
However, there were some that didn't go as I thought due to my lack of skill, and especially in the carving, I wasn't able to follow the lines of the original print in so details since I used soft woodblocks as mentioned above.
⑤ After finishing the production
When I asked a acquaintance of mine, who is an ukiyo-e dealer, to look at the completed reproduction, he commented "I feel the color of red, the hardness of the paper, and the hardness of the colors are different from the original print. But for a moment I thought it was the original, and I don't think an ordinary people would be able to tell if it's an original or reproduction. "
This reproducing is limited to 33 copies and only handled by Cool Japan.
To prevent it from being misappropriated as a forgery, I this time added a little large blank space at the bottom of the print and put my signature there.
Note that this work had undergone aging processing. It has like the same level of dirt or damage as the original print, which can be said to be in "good condition", so please be aware of this before purchasing.

MWW Artwork of the Day (10/12/19) Shirô Kasamatsu (Japanese, 1898–1991) Spring Rain at Kinokuni Mound (Kinokuni-zuka baiu)(1938) Vertical ôban woodblock print, 39.2 x 26.1 cm. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts (Gift of L. Aaron Lebowich)
Shirô Kasamatsu is one of the recognized masters of the Shin-hanga ("new prints") art movement that flourished in Japan from around 1915 to 1942, though it resumed briefly from 1946 through the 1950s. Inspired by European Impressionism, the artists incorporated Western elements such as the effects of light and the expression of individual moods, but focused on strictly traditional themes of landscapes (fukeiga), famous places (meisho), beautiful women (bijinga), kabuki actors (yakusha-e), and birds-and-flowers (kacho-e).
Shin-hanga is often defined as "neo-ukiyo-e" under the shadow of the ukiyo-e tradition. While shin-hanga prints retain much of the ukiyo-e tradition in terms of subject matter, they reveal vastly different techniques and sensibilities. Inspired by Western Realism, shin-hanga artists produce hybrids that combine modern design with traditional subjects. The use of naturalistic light, colored lines, soft colors, 3-dimensionality, deep space are artistic innovations that break with the ukiyo-e tradition. (adapted from a Wikipedia article)

When it comes to collecting action figures from the Star Wars universe, there are many different choices. There are dozens of characters, such as C-3PO, Boba Fett, Darth Vader, General Veers, and countless others. Here's a quick guide to which characters are best to collect. Whether you're starting out or have been collecting action figures for years, you're sure to find something that you'll enjoy. C-3POThere are so many options for collectors of Star Wars action figures. The Vintage Collection includes C-3PO, one of the most iconic droids. Collectors were immediately impressed by its innovative look, including an inner bubble, which scrunches the protocol droid's wired belly. Collectors quickly discovered that this C-3PO figure was the most accurate to screen, thanks to its removable panels and perfect articulation. Boba FettThe Mandalorian is currently playing on Disney+, and in last week's episode, we were introduced to a new character: Boba Fett. As one of the most iconic characters in the entire Star Wars franchise, Boba Fett is a must-have collectible item. BigBadToyStore is one place to find Boba Fett action figures. Some are available right now, while others are pre-orders. Darth VaderThere are two versions of Darth Vader, both of which are excellent. The Hasbro version is the better of the two. It has a better sculpt and is more detailed. However, the MAFEX version does not look very good. Though the helmet has an awful sculpt, it has good detailing on the inside. The SHF figure has a good helmet sculpt, but has a poorly-designed cape. Also, the cape is too short and is wired. In addition, the inner robes are made of plastic. General VeersIf you're looking for a great Star Wars action figure to collect, General Veers might be the one for you. Veers was a tough officer who loved wrecking havoc on the ground forces of the Empire. He was also a very honorable front-line commander who earned respect from Grand Admiral Thrawn. You can pick up Veers today at an affordable price at Hasbro. Meisho Movie Realization Ronin Mandalorian action figureThe Meisho Movie Realization series brings the Mandalorian to life with a detailed action figure. The figure is based on the beskar armor that is featured in the Disney+ Series, and also includes an in-scale Grogu figure, which can sit atop wooden pushcarts from the Samurai period of Japanese history. The figure is also equipped with a rifle, a blaster, and a jetpack, enabling fans to become the mighty warrior.

Bringing Tamashii to the World
Figures. They move us to the core. Cool, fun, amazing, scary, sorrowful… The feelings we get from figures can change from moment to moment, but the one thing they all have in common is soul — or tamashii.
Tamashii Nations is a place for products with Tamashii instilled by Japanese master craftsmen. Based in Asakusa, Tokyo, we make fully-assembled figures for collectors, as a division of Japan’s top toymaker, BANDAI. Thirteen years have passed since the brand was established in 2007, and today, we now produce 400 new figures annually and offer our products in twenty countries around the world.
Moved by our love for figures and characters, we pursue a uniqueness that cannot be found elsewhere by bringing tamashii to the world.
