Scotland's NHS has paused prescribing puberty blockers to children referred by a gender identity clinic.
The Sandyford clinic in Glasgow also said new patients aged 16 or 17 would no longer receive other hormone treatments until they were 18.
It follows a landmark review of gender services for under-18s in England.
Dr Hilary Cass's review said children had been let down by a lack of research and there was "remarkably weak" evidence on medical interventions.
NHS England confirmed it would stop prescribing puberty blockers in March.
Puberty blockers work by suppressing the release of hormones that cause puberty and are often prescribed to children questioning their gender as a way of stopping physical changes such as breast development or facial hair.
Like other parts of the UK, Scotland has seen a rapid rise in the number of young people questioning their identity or experiencing gender dysphoria.
The only specialist service for under-18s is the Sandyford clinic in Glasgow, where people can self-refer or can be referred through their GP.
Figures released to BBC Scotland News under a freedom of information request, showed that at the end of 2023, 1,100 patients were on the waiting list.
As well as referrals for puberty blockers, the Sandyford also refers patients for "gender affirming hormones" such as testosterone or oestrogen to 16 and 17-year-olds.
In the NHS in England, fewer than 100 children - who had already started a prescription - are now taking puberty blockers.
In Scotland, the number is likely to be far smaller.
Following the position taken by NHS England, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) and NHS Lothian deferred starting new patients on the treatment in mid-March.
The Glasgow health board said patients had now been formally notified, however existing patients currently receiving treatment would not be affected.
Dr Emilia Crighton, NHSGCC's director of public health said: "The findings informing the Cass review are important, and we have reviewed the impact on our clinical pathways.
"The next step from here is to work with the Scottish government and academic partners to generate evidence that enables us to deliver safe care for our patients."
Review findings 'considered'
Scottish Health Secretary Neil Gray welcomed the decision, saying the government and health boards are considering the recommendations of the Cass review.
He said: "We have been clear it is for clinicians and health boards to make decisions about clinical pathways, and that these decisions should be made carefully and based on the best evidence available.
"This is what both health boards have done and their position is supported by the chief medical officer.
"More broadly, the Cass review's final report and findings are being closely considered by both the Scottish government and health boards, in the context of how such healthcare can be best delivered in Scotland."
Vic Valentine, of Scottish Trans and the Equality Network, said pausing puberty blockers was the wrong decision and said it would "harm trans children and young people".
A statement said: "This decision has been taken within the context where the reality of trans people's experiences and lives is questioned almost daily in some of the media and some political circles.
"This makes us worry that the decision has been influenced by that context rather than solely through consideration of the best interests of trans children and young people."
Scottish Conservative deputy leader Meghan Gallacher said the decision was "long overdue" and accused the government of leaking the news to the press "before having the decency to update parliament".
She called for an urgent ministerial statement so MSPs had a chance to ask questions on the matter.
She said: "I'm beyond fed up with this lackadaisical approach to gender care. They are failing children and young people."

Sky Blue v. Washington Spirit
Buckle your seatbelts, folks, cause we’re about to kickstart the NWSL fall series and it’s going to be a wild ride. I was hiking this morning during the game (15 miles, baby), but I haunted the CBS site until they put up the replay.
I’ve got to say, this game was amazingly well matched. Both teams had pretty good accuracy and the possession wasn’t swayed super far in either direction. I think both teams showed a pretty good match, but Sky Blue created more opportunities and took better advantage of the opportunities they were given.
Speaking of which, Onumanu’s goal in the 18′ was an absolute miracle. Everything set up perfectly and she ran it through and finished it like a total boss. On a completely unrelated note, Onumanu is absolutely gorgeous and she was so cool and collected during her halftime interview. She deserves way more credit than she gets.
I liked to hear our pal Lisa explain some of the shit storm with Utah during the half as well.
And a moment of deep appreciation.... for this haircut.
Tumblr media
Never have I ever seen something that I loved so much as this haircut. Every time she touched the ball, I got distracted by that slanted lightning bolt thing down the side.
Also, let’s have a moment of silent appreciation for two, *TWO*, female commentators.
And they clearly know what the people want. Is it more universal access to Women’s sports on US tv? Is it prime time ESPN coverage of the NWSL? Is it equal pay for the women’s national team? Is it the news that women’s soccer will be the first offical “sport of the gays”?
no.
Tumblr media
it’s a freaking playground. Well, we’ll take what we can get.
Then we had this interesting little interaction that still has me scratching my head. Starting with an innocent pass from Sheridan to Lewandowski....
Tumblr media
Who is then pushed around a bit by Meghan McCool. As someone rooting for Sky Blue, you may think this would irritate me, but I’ll allow it seeing as her last name is McCool.
Tumblr media
Then the world descends into chaos as Ashley Hatch joins the fun. Kailen Sheridan is on the ground, people are shouting, whistles are not blowing, and the commentators are going full nuts because they, like the rest of us, have no clue what’s going on. And Kailen Sheridan is on the ground!
Tumblr media
And then a whistle breaks through the chaos to call a ........ off sides?
huh?
what?
where?
how?
You know, I’m just going to forget this and move on to the rest of the game.
Tumblr media
Kailen Sheridan and her huge-haired glory is back on her feet and the world is going to be okay.
And also Ashley Sanchez struggled big time with her heart rate monitor at 39′. She tried to put it on while walking, but eventually had to stop and still took a good 20 seconds to strap that thing back on. It’s okay honey, take your time. We all struggle with seemingly simple tasks sometimes. Your braided ponytail is cool enough to make up for it.
Tumblr media
And then Kailen Sheridan got wiped out, knowing that once she got up, she was going to have to defend a penalty kick. Here are two blurry screenshots of her getting taken out by Meghan McCool. (Okay, so the name thing only goes so far)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luckily, she was sitting up pretty quick, only to lose a penalty kick
Tumblr media
BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER! Because who do we have to save the day but this dream team..... Mallory Diane Pugh and Margaret Melinda Purce. Mal literally JETS down the field in the 90′ and hits the post, but it doesn’t matter because mere seconds later, she fires this ball to Midge Purce who sends it in for the game-winner.
Tumblr media
And that sums up my recap of the game. My very gay gal of the match is a tie between Kailen Sheridan (who always wins simply because I’ve watched her since she played for Clemson) and a new winner, Midge Purce.
Tumblr media
Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend, my dudes, dudettes, and non binary dude people.

Weinstein Convicted of Sexual Assault, Acquitted of Being a Serial Predator: New York Jury
Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was convicted of sexual assault by a New York jury on Monday, a victory for the #MeToo movement that inspired women to go public with misconduct allegations against powerful men.
Once one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers, Weinstein, 67, was convicted of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping Jessica Mann, a onetime aspiring actress, in 2013.
He faces up to 25 years in prison.
He was acquitted on the most serious charge, predatory sexual assault, which carried a potential life sentence.
During his trial, Weinstein often appeared feeble, entering the courthouse using a walker. He sometimes leaned on his lead attorney, Donna Rotunno, for support.
“He’s taken some good acting tips,” actress Rose McGowan said at the start of the trial on Jan. 6 while staging a protest near the courthouse along with actress Rosanna Arquette and other Weinstein accusers.
Weinstein made his mark with critically acclaimed films such as “The English Patient” and “Shakespeare in Love.”
More than 80 women, including famous actresses, had accused him of sexual misconduct stretching back decades. He had denied the allegations and said any sexual encounters were consensual.
Paul Callan, a former New York prosecutor who is not involved in the case, said Weinstein had strong grounds to argue the verdict should be overturned on appeal because of bias, noting that one of the jurors was the author of a forthcoming book on teenage girls and “predatory” older men.
During the trial, prosecutors portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who had manipulated women with promises to open doors in Hollywood, coaxing them to hotel rooms or private apartments and then overpowering and violently attacking them.
“The man seated right there was not just a titan in Hollywood, he was a rapist,” Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Meghan Hast said during opening arguments.
Seated at the defense table, Weinstein often appeared impassive, though at times he looked intently at his attorneys when they cross-examined his accusers.
‘JEKYLL AND HYDE’
During the many weeks of trial, the prosecution methodically elicited graphic testimony from several accusers, including Haleyi, who said Weinstein invited her to his SoHo home after she had worked on one of his television productions.
After she arrived, Weinstein backed her into a bedroom, held her down on the bed and forced himself on her orally, yanking out her tampon, Haleyi told jurors.
A onetime aspiring actress, Mann said that soon after meeting Weinstein she entered into an “extremely degrading” relationship with him that never included intercourse until, she alleged, he raped her in 2013.
She described Weinstein as a “Jekyll and Hyde” character: He was charming in public but often showed terrifying anger when they were alone, Mann said.
At one point, she started sobbing uncontrollably on the stand, prompting the judge to end testimony early for the day.
Weinstein was charged with assaulting Haleyi and Mann, but prosecutors bolstered their case by calling several other accusers as witnesses.
One of these women, “Sopranos” actress Annabella Sciorra, told jurors Weinstein came into her apartment one winter night in 1993 or 1994 and raped her.
Though the accusation was too old to be charged as a separate crime, prosecutors offered it to show Weinstein was a repeat sexual offender.
Three other women – costume designer Dawn Dunning, model Tarale Wulff and actress Lauren Young – testified that they were enticed into meeting Weinstein for professional reasons and then groped or raped.
Testimony of “prior bad acts” is generally not allowed in criminal trials, but an exception to the law allowed prosecutors to call these women to show Weinstein had a particular intention or a signature pattern of behavior.
Legal experts said the women provided powerful evidence that was difficult for the defense to overcome.
Dunning testified that the producer groped her in 2004 and offered her movie roles in exchange for three-way sex with him and his assistant, which she refused.
Young, a model and actress, testified that the producer trapped her in a hotel bathroom in 2013, masturbated in front of her while groping her breasts, and told her: “This is what all the actresses do to make it.”
‘LAST LINE OF DEFENSE’
Throughout the case, the defense said regret drove the accusers to take consensual incidents and reframe them as crimes.
Weinstein’s lawyers zeroed in on friendly messages and ongoing contact between the women and Weinstein.
During cross-examination of Haleyi, for example, the defense showed her a message she sent Weinstein signed “lots of love” after her alleged attack.
Defense lawyers repeatedly suggested that Mann willingly had sex with Weinstein to advance her career.
Weinstein never testified in his defense, although he told reporters he had wanted to. One of his lawyers said the case was too weak to warrant putting him on the stand.
Weinstein’s lawyer Rotunno told jurors during closing arguments that they were “the last line of defense” against an “overzealous” prosecution and that women were “responsible” for the “choices they make to further their own careers.”
Prosecutors pushed back against claims that his accusers were not credible and the notion that they were responsible for the alleged attacks.
Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi said it was irrelevant whether they had ongoing contact with Weinstein after the alleged attacks.
Illuzzi rejected a defense claim that Mann had a loving relationship with Weinstein, but said it would not matter if she had been “head over heels in love with him.”
“He still wouldn’t be allowed to rape her on March 18 of 2013,” she said.
Weinstein still faces sexual assault charges in California, which were announced just hours after his New York rape trial began, and dozens of women have filed civil lawsuits against him.
