Mega Man Zero 2 Part 3: Elpizo
Leviathan’s stage is one of those that is entirely held up by its aesthetic and music, otherwise, like the train level, it’s too simple with some questionable enemy placement (especially at the end), but it’s still ok.
Also those snowball throwing enemies are based on enemies from Chill Penguin’s stage in X1
Fefnir’s stage is pretty tough but also fun
The frog’s stage is...the Forest of Dysis act 2, it even has the same miniboss. Granted Fefnir’s stage also reuses Phoenix Magnion’s aesthetic, even starting from one of his generator rooms to give a sense of continuity, but here it really feels like an alternate version of a previous stage. Still good though.
The boss can be an absolute bitch though, especially if you let him eat those golden tadpoles (?)
Harpuia’s stage is probably my favorite of the game, mostly due to its gimmick with the differently colored crystal platforms.
It’s also the best stage in which to grind E Crystals thanks to those infinitely spawning red and blue insect enemies
So unique to this game is the form system: basically by performing a certain amount of actions in a stage (which the game never tells you about), such as killing X amount of enemies with a dash slash, or with the buster etc you can unlock different “forms” for Zero which will have slightly different attributes, like more power to the buster or greater speed etc
I never use them for 3 reasons:
1) The requirements can only be met during a stage that you have yet to complete and usually require you to stop and grind some enemies for a while
2) Each form also comes with a downgrade of sorts: the X form, which powers up the buster, also nerfs the sword for example, so I don’t think they’re that practical
3) Each form changes Zero’s color and they look kinda fugly imo
Speaking of Zero’s design I guess this is as good a time as any to discuss the Zero series’ artsyle right?
I wasn’t in the fandom back when these games were coming out but I can imagine that the artstyle must’ve caused plenty of people to bitch, especially Zero’s redesign, because this is the kind of hard shift in artstyle that usually causes fans to bitch, and to be fair: it is completely different than previously
From what I can gather the only real reason why Inti Creates opted for this style was to further give the series its own distinct sense of identity, which I can respect
Now personally the only real issue I have is that most of the characters are...pretty much dressed the same. Like they all wear a variation of that midriff exposing “shirt”, even Zero who’s supposed to be 100+ years old, so either fashion style has really gotten homogeneous or these clothes are not to be taken literally but more as “approximations” of clothing due to the somewhat chibi-fied artstyle
Furthermore most boss characters look like chuncks of metal shaped like animals with very little expressiveness.
What I do like about this style is the sheer amount of detail in the artwork and in the backgrounds (especially in the later games), not to mention how the sleeker designs lend themselves very easily to much more dynamic poses than previously, which helps the characters look just plain cool and stylish
For better or worse one can’t imagine the Zero games without Toru Nakayama’s artwork, it just wouldn’t be the same.

Mega Man Zero 2 Thoughts
I’m going to be honest, I was only half paying attention for parts of it
I also played half the game using only one hand as a self imposed challenge
I missed the rotating air slash from Zero 1
I liked that I could optionally disable my ultimate form to try the other forms
…because I of course played on easy mode again
The frog and Phoenix gave me a lot of trouble
I found the grapple hook a little hard to use reliably
I enjoyed the plot decently but yikes the translation is rough
I was reading the text out loud in that classic “bad anime voice acting” style as seen in mega man 8 and x4
It was fun to see the guardians again
I preferred the mission structure compared to Zero 1
Overall though, it felt pretttty similar
I enjoyed the intro cutscene and the way the menu doesn’t change until after
Didn’t really try the shield boomerang and never got it in the first game either, whoops
I only got one EX skill the whole time, oops
And really only got 2 optional forms, I think
Overall, generally positive and looking forward to the next one!
Side note: I’m not sure yet if I’ve talked about how much of the games I’m skipping, but I now just have 7 games left : Zero 3-4, ZX + Advent, and MM 9/10/11 as part of my new plan. Then maybe I’ll play the current seasons of fortnite and MW2, maybe a new visual novel.
Long term, I do want to beat all the battle network games, legends, 7-8, the 2 Sega games, the 2 remakes. But maybe another time. I’m in the middle of the MMBN1 DS remake, fan translated to English from like a year ago, but I had been playing on 3DS -!: now I have a lovely DSi XL to play it on with the proper aspect ratio/pixel density. but of course there’s also the collection next year, but not for Xbox. But I do have a switch and PC, so who knows. I’ll have to wait and see if it’s worth it.

Mega Man Zero 2 Part 1: The Endless Fight
Mega Man Zero 2 is a Sequel with a capital S
It’s one of those sequels that improves over the first game so throughly that it pretty much eliminates any reason to ever go back to it.
The first thing you’ll notice, aside from the improved spritework (not that Zero 1 was a bad looking game by any means, but its backgrounds could be a bit simplistic, not to mention that the level aesthetics were often bleak and samey, just ruins and delapidated roads everywhere), is the improved presentation of the story
Zero 1 was very bare bones plotwise, characters didn’t really speak about anything other than mission objectives, Zero was mostly silent and the game never really delved into the reasons as to why Copy X and Neo Arcadia were being such tyrants, aside from Ciel sometimes mentioning the need for her to develop a substitute energy source for...reasons.
Here the story is told in a much more cinematic way, characters talk more (without being so overbearing that it makes you feel like you’re watching a movie rather than playing a game), we’re explicitly told that there’s an energy crysis and that’s the reason for Neo Arcadia’s tyranny and for Ciel’s research, it’s just a much better told plot.
Wanna know another thing that’s been improved? The fucking soundtrack!
Zero 1′s OST was...kinda there overall.
Zero 2 has one of the best GBA soundtracks ever and I will die on this hill!!
The opening stage is one of the best in franchise history and a good chunck of the reason why is its music: Departure. I just wish the stage itself were longer!
Also here’s a cool detail: during the intro stage the menu will look like the one in Zero 1 but all cracked and worn. After Zero gets repaired it takes on its new, sleeker look!
Unfortunately Zero’s moveset is, once again, nerfed at the start, without even any sort of explanation this time
However this time it’s much easier to unlock new moves: I unlocked the charged shot for the buster near the end of my first stage
Picking Phoenix Magnion as a starting stage is pretty far from a popular choice: it’s the hardest of the first four stages with the hardest boss by a mile
I did it first however due to a little special detail: Elpizo tells you that that factory is used to build enemy robots and that by destroying its generators you will halt their production.
And he wasn’t kidding: by beating this stages the other 3 starting stages will be deprived of their Pantheons (the humanoid enemies)
It doesn’t make them particularily easier but it’s a nice detail
The stage itself is one of my favorites: you have to find and destroy 4 genarators, making this a rare example of a non linear Mega Man stage
Fortunately the generators themselves are pretty easy to find so you shouldn’t get lost. You can even find secret rooms and passages that contain extra lives, Energy Crystals and Cyber Elves!
Oh and the track for this level is an obvious homage to a Led Zeppelin song. I’m personally way more surprised at the quality of the instrumentation for a goddamn gba game!
Phoenix Magnion is one tough SOB, mainly due to the random jets of lava that jump from the ground while he attacks.
Here’s a tip: the arena in which you’ll fight him will be the very last generator room you’ll destroy. Each of these rooms has a different number of “holes” on the floor from which lava can jump, so knowing this you should leave the room with the least amount of “holes” for last in order to make your fight easier
