Todays rip: 14/09/2023
Green Panty Zone (Sequenced Ver.)
Season 5 Featured on: STUDIO TRIGGER QUALITY MUSIC WORKS
Ripped by SonicHeroesFan1
youtube
I've talked about it before, but man - its SO cool how I've been able to get attached to certain rips without knowing anything about what its aiming to convey. This isn't just about not getting the joke - there are a surprising number of rips made as tributes or inofficial follow-ups of sorts to other well-loved pieces from other communities. An example I've covered on this blog would be Big Sus Chocobo, an Among Us-themed YTPMV of Electric de Chocobo directly paying tribute to The First AVGN YTPMV of 2022, which released earlier that year (which in turn took direct inspiration from Big Ass Chocobo from 2017 - thank you, anonymous Ask for the correction!). Its heartwarming, in a way, to remember that SiIvaGunner is at its core part of a community, and that the channel is a community of creators in of itself.
The part in parenthesis in Green Panty Zone (Sequenced Ver.)'s name isn't just for flavor - it openly tells you from what source SonicHeroesFan1 chose to pay tribute to with this rip. Green Panty Zone is a 10-year old mashup between Champion from the anime series Panty & Stocking and various pieces of Sonic the Hedgehog music - made by none other than the infamous Triple-Q. You remember Triple-Q, right? - I've talked about him on the blog before in Planet Wisp Mashup Medley, and even outside of SiIvaGunner he's one of the most long-enduring personalities in the space of audio shitposting. Green Panty Zone, despite its age, is a pretty fun listen and displays the sheer creativity and work Triple-Q so consistently puts into his work, even as long ago as 2012.
With all that said, it *is* still a mashup - a rather simple joke in execution that works tremendously well. Green Panty Zone (Sequenced Ver.) pushes Triple-Q's original idea to the natural end point - what if the melody of Champion were to be directly implemented into the Sonic music used? The outcome is nothing short of beautiful, and it runs the full list of Sonic music featured in the original - Green Hill Zone, Angel Island Zone, Emerald Hill Zone, Palmtree Panic Present, Green Hill Zone's 8-bit rendition from the Game Gear, and even the oft-forgotten Sunset Hill from Sonic Advance 3. Each segment is given utmost care in their sound and authenticity, to where its almost hard to notice just how much the rip escalates and changes as it goes from Sonic game to Sonic game. Its easy to infer by his username, but SonicHeroesFan1 displays such infectious love for the Sonic series in all the Sonic rips he works on, its as if that love directly translates into quality and authenticity.
Each segment is done incredibly in its own right, and are topped off with a bunch of personal flourishes binding them together. The most striking one is the transition into Sunset Hill from Sonic Advance 3, using Sonic CD's time-travel sounds and a voice clip from Sonic's early-2000s voice actor to signify the change to a more "modern" Sonic game track, but that's only really scratching the surface! There's spring sounds, spike sounds, a snare sound almost exclusive to Sonic 2's soundtrack that opens the way for the Emerald Hill Zone segment - hell, the entire segment representing Sonic CD actually uses another SiIvaGunner rip as its baseline, yet it fits the mix so perfectly as to almost go unnoticed despite how noticably different it sounds. (Read Collision Chaos Good Future JP [CD Beta Mix] to learn more!)
This is one of those rips that I swear I could gush about endlessly, and the strangest part is that...I've never watched Panty & Stocking. I have no idea what emotional ties this'll have to someone who did - I'm speaking solely as a SiIvaGunner and a Sonic the Hedgehog fan, and that alone was enough to make this rip hit home. The amount of love poured into rips like these, despite being so directly tied to jokes for such a specific audience - tied to a mashup made 10 years ago by someone who, as a reminder, doesn't even associate much with the SiIvaGunner team anymore - is absolutely insane. Its a true testament to where SiIvaGunner's priorities lie: It's never about broad reach, about fame, about attention, but about quality and love for the fellow man.

In light of… that. Pizza Tower was HEAVILY inspired on the Wario Land series, especially on Wario Land 4, which is a Nintendo game that came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2001. Pirating Game Boy Advance games is super easy! On PC, all you have to do is download Visual Boy Advance M and download a ROM from a ROM sharing website. I recommend Wow Roms or Vimm’s Lair.
If you have a modded 3DS however! You can install New Super Ultimate Injector, which allows you to play not only GBA games but also NES, SNES, original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Mega Drive, Game Gear AND TurbiGrafx 16 games on your 3DS! Tumblr doesn’t like links, so I’ll link to those programs + ROMs + tutorials on how to use them on a reblog of this post.

can you write a super fluffy josh futterman fic where they play Minecraft?:)
I literally this this is the cutest prompt ever, I am legit so garbage at writing fluff so it is potentially going to be a little short, I apologize in advance. I hope I do it justice :)
Cw: mega fluff, josh futturman, fem! Reader, video games
Tumblr media
You honestly were extremely grateful for Josh. You had just moved to LA that year working in an internship position for Kronish Labs, working directly under Dr. Kronish. You thought his research was silly, however, you knew this internship would look incredible on your resume. Moving hours away from home stressed you out more than you realized, not knowing anyone, and trying to start a life in a new state, it was a lot. That’s when you met Josh. A goofy janitor with a video game addiction. Immediately, you were smitten. Soon enough, you had to get the nerve to ask him out, and to your surprise, he said yes. From then on, you got to work alongside the boy who was your saving grace, the boy who also got you into his videogame addiction.
-------------------------
“Josh can we please take a break from Biotic Wars?” you whined. The two of you had been on this level for the last 3 days, and frankly, you were tired of looking at Wolf get killed over and over again (hes hot, what can you say).
“Come on were almost at the end!” he excitedly shouted at you, turning toward you in in his gaming chair, his hair falling over his face. His smile was bright, causing small creases on the outer corner of his eyes. His dark eyes seemed to be shining, beaming with excitement. You couldn’t help but smile. He was so insanely pretty. You let out a soft smile.
“can we please play something else?” you pushed out your bottom lip in a pout. He got up, walking over to the bed, jumping onto it next to you. He kissed your cheek.
“okay, okay. What would you like to play now, peanut?” Peanut was a name that he called you from the very beginning. You used to have a small tub of peanuts in your office, and since then he always called you peanut. Weird, you know, but you liked to snack when you were writing your reports. Sheepishly, you asked,
“what if we just played some Minecraft?” his face immediately lit up, a big smile forming on his lips.
“of course, weirdo,” he chuckled. He quickly got up, tossing a controller your way and loading up Minecraft on his tv. He loaded a new survival world, and start playing. “hey theres some pigs over here, im gonna get us some food,” he smiled.
“Okay,” you smiled. “Im going to start getting a house put together.” In the game, you two start scrambling to get a shelter put together as the sun set. You ended up making a square dirt house with a singular torch. Josh moves his character toward the house, closing it up when we get inside. He put a bed down.
“Here, I got you this one.” He placed a pink bed next to his bland white one. You looked over to him and smiled.
“Aww, next to yours? Cute,” you smiled. He leaned over and gave you a soft kiss on your lips, filling you with a warmth that you loved.
“You are my girlfriend,” you didn’t know why, but you blushed. You loved being called his girlfriend. You looked back at the tv, hiding the blush that crept across your face. “Oh, and one more thing,” he made his character crouch as he placed a rose next to your bed.
“Aw, youre too sweet, joshy,” you grinned as you clicked the bed to make your character sleep.
---------------
Hours passed, and you were starting to get sleepy. “Hey joshy, I think I should get going home, Im getting really tired,” you yawned out. He frowned.
“Already?”
“I have to get up earlyyy,” you groaned.
“Do you want to stay the night? We can just drive to work together?” His eyes were tired.
“Sure, I would love to stay the night, josh.” This was the first time you got to stay the night over there. He smiled, turning off the tv to get ready for bed. He got under the covers, patting the spot next to him for you to join him. Hesitantly, you did, and he immediately wrapped his arms around you, pulling you closer to him. He gave you a soft kiss.
“thank you for staying tonight. I love you.” Your eyes widen, looking at him. He had a cheesy grin spread across his face.
“What did you say?” you couldn’t help but start to smile.
“I love you, y/n.”“I love you too, joshy,” you buried your head into his chest, hiding your face. You listened to his heartbeat as you slowly drifted off to sleep, happy.

I Will Survive
Tumblr media
The Vampire Survivors DLC Ode to Castlevania ended up as one of my most entertaining gameplay experiences of 2024. This took me by surprise, as I was late to hop on the Vampire Survivors train, and didn't play the game until earlier this year. I'm not sure why I avoided it, considering how much I dig Castlevania (hey, here's a link to an old piece I wrote here about how the series cured my childhood fear of vampires), but it probably has something to do with automatically distrusting anything that gets too popular, and then thinking I am somehow superior for avoiding the mainstream.
That aside, Vampire Survivors is really a great game that's full of Newgrounds-style pluck, and it's precisely the sort of thing that a kid with no money to play real Castlevanias would've devoted their life to back in 2001. I kind of was that kid, considering that I first experienced all of the Castlevania games via emulation, but I digress. The ability to pimp out your character with all manner of add-ons and then stand in the middle of the screen as legions of foes try to get close, only to be bashed backwards by your spinning auras of bullshit, is tremendously entertaining. My fave survivor is Poppea Pecorina, who sings magic energy pillars into existence and apparently has a naughty name in Italian. But nobody in the OG Vampire Survivors roster can compete with the thrill of actually commanding Belmonts and the other associated protagonists of Konami's whip-slinging franchise, and that's what the Ode to Castlevania DLC brings to the fray.
Tumblr media
The question of "who's your favorite Castlevania character" is one that renders tribalism equivalent to kids arguing about Batman versus Spider-Man on the playground, or maybe SNES versus Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. But it actually doesn't matter here, because almost all of the Castlevania characters to ever star in a game are on display in this DLC, either from the getgo or as secret unlockables after you "beat" the main map with Richter Belmont. And yes, mainstays like Richter, Trevor, Simon, and Alucard are all present and accounted for, but I'm more intrigued by the lesser-known and underappreciated characters, who have always been my preferred ones. (There I go again, deviating from what's popular.)
For instance, Juste, the Belmont who supposedly starred in the "worst" Game Boy Advance game (eff that noise), is very good, has a rocking remixed theme (all of the remixes here are top notch, to be fair), and boasts a pleasant nod to his role as the premiere Belmont mage thanks to an item called Belnades' Spellbook, which lets him spam magic like a beast. Then there's Sonia, the one female Belmont who starred in a game retconned by Koji Igarashi (also eff that noise), who is finally given the star status that she deserves (as well as a pair of trousers) with an OP skillset that makes her power rise the more meat she consumes. Now that's a Belmont matriarch for you!
Tumblr media
However, it is the truly obscure cuts that make me bounce up and down in my seat whenever I'm playing Vampire Survivors: Ode to Castlevania. I'm talking about inclusions like Quincy Morris, who only tangentially holds a connection to 1994's Castlevania: Bloodlines/The New Generation. Bloodlines is a personal favorite of mine as one of the best games on the Genesis, but I also like it as a title that dipped into funky continuity by tying Konami's "Conan versus Dracula" games with Bram Stoker's original Dracula novel. Quincy Morris is supposed to be the same Quincy Morris (spelled Quincey in the book) who showed up in the latter half of Dracula - you know, the part where the novel stops being gothic horror and becomes a rollocking D&D adventure. He's a Texan hanging out in Europe who just happens to have a bigass Bowie knife that he later uses to behead Dracula, and he was only referenced in the instruction manual of Bloodlines/The New Generation. Instead you played as his son John Morris, who would later go on to sire his own offspring named Jonathan Morris in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
All of this lore is well and dandy, but Quincy has technically never appeared in an actual Castlevania game, nor has he had a sprite of his own...until now. Vampire Survivors did it, of all games, and now Quincy has been canonised as a dashing Texas bastard with a black hat and a...shuriken as his default weapon. I still think they should've stuck a Bowie knife into the game, but seeing as how there's already a standard knife, I see why they didn't. And hey, if Quincy can pop up in Europe in the original Dracula book just to fight the undead for the heck of it, who's to say that he can't pop up in Castlevania canon with a ninja star as his go-to projectile? The Morris side of the Belmont family line is clearly a weeaboo lineage!
Tumblr media
I mention this attention to detail to outline the good work that poncle, the little company that could, has done with Ode to Castlevania. What started as a project that was intentionally derivative has evolved into something not only officially sanctioned by Konami, but a game that’s making its own contributions to Castlevania lore by ensuring that fallen-in-the-cracks characters like Quincy get their moment. This is especially important in the weird era we live in, where Castlevania is a very hot property thanks to the Netflix show but one that hasn't really had a game since Lords of Shadow 2, which was a decade ago and unfortunately poorly received. A few years ago, I would've said that Konami just doesn't care about their IP any more outside of what they can squeeze from pachinko machines, but seeing as how they published a remake of Silent Hill 2 courtesy of Blooper Team earlier this year, who knows. Maybe they're just waiting for the right studio to farm out the next Castlevania revival to.
If poncle ever wants to make a game beyond Vampire Survivors, I'd say that they'd be the group perfect for the job. As it stands, though, Ode to Castlevania probably wins the title of the best Castlevania game of the last ten years, and even if that's a low bar to clear, what we have here is very, very good and the epitome of fan service. I'm glad I stopped avoiding Vampire Survivors and finally dove in, and now I've got an eye towards checking out that Contra DLC from a few years back too...

Sega Mega Drive - Shadowrun (Asian Version)
Title: Shadowrun / シャドウン
Developer: Blue Sky Software
Publisher: Sega of America
Release Month: March 1994
Catalogue No.: 1352
Genre: RPG
Tumblr media
Not the same game as the Super Famicom game by Beam Software and Data East, or the Sega Mega CD equivalent by Compile.
The Shadowrun world has existed since the 80s in the form of pen & paper role-playing games. The world blends fantasy elements such as magic, elves, and dragons wonderfully into a dark cyberpunk world. The term 'shadowrun' itself refers to black ops where freelance operatives are utilized. These are handed out by employers referred to by the pseudonym "Mr. Johnson". In the game, this is the main source of cash and karma (=experience).
This game earns an honorary mention alone for the fact that there is no level-based character development, which is extremely rare for CRPGs. Health (both mental and physical) is measured by percentage. Completing shadowruns, killing enemies, and advancing the plot earns you karma which you may use to increase your attributes and skills. Upgrade your endurance and buy better armor, and you'll be able to resist damage more effectively. Also, there are minimal class restrictions. The only definite thing is whether the character may use magic. Even dying is only a small hitch, since future medicine can perform miracles, though it doesn't come cheap. You can hire up to two others 'runners, and fire them to hire others if you want to. Just like your main character, other members of your group can also be developed any way you like.
The game world is also very open. Apart from the short beginning sequence you're free to go anywhere. Certain doors only open with a little tip or reputation, which feels more realistic than restrictive.
In the main mode of the game, you control your character from a top-down view. You walk around dystopic Seattle, looking for work, buying better stuff, and looking for clues. Oh yes, the plot. The game begins as the news broadcasts a video of the death of the main character's brother. You travel to Seattle to find out why and how he ended up dead. You have an electronic notebook in the game which automatically keeps track of all the clues, so having no idea where to go next is very rare.
Most of the game is in real-time, including combat. Character stats define how fast you can attack or run away, and how effective the attacks are. Bigger guns do more damage, but that gives little comfort if you can't hit the broad side of a barn.
A very different part of the game is when you jack into the Matrix, the future replacement for the Internet. Your silver-clad online avatar glides across the digital landscape, avoiding, fooling, or fighting Intrusion Countermeasure (IC, aka 'ice') programs. The Matrix can be used for many beneficial effects. Databanks can hold valuable information you can fence, and if you're infiltrating a company building you can use the Matrix to shut down cameras, unlock doors, and cancel the alarm. Also, if you're lucky you may find additional information about the plot.
Shadowrun on the Mega Drive manages to be unique and intensely playable at the same time. If you're looking for a good overall RPG, give this a try. If you're looking for something different, give this a try.
This game was never released in Japan but there was an Asian release which is what I have here. The game is the same as the US version but comes with a PAL Mega Drive-style cover with Japanese and Asia Mega Drive logos. The instruction manual is the same as the US manual, but you also get a separate Chinese manual. The actual cartridge just looks like a Japanese Mega Drive cartridge.
