It's additionally worth noting that cloud storage space is limited, so be careful how many conferences you document while utilizing the mobile app. The business has made several moves to counter these problems and also assure users about the value of protection and also privacy. Microsoft is additionally coming out with versions of Teams for personal and also family usage. Microsoft has seen a 775 percent rise in cloud solutions across areas that have implemented social distancing because of COVID-19.
Is Zoom owned by Google?
Microsoft originally acquired Skype for $8.5 billion back in 2011. It was the same year that Zoom and Snapchat were founded, and Apple launched its iPhone 4S.
IT specialists can likewise access Microsoft Teams also if their firm is not certified for Groups. They can call their Microsoft companion or sales representatives for free access to the Workplace 365 E1 plan for 6 months.
So, we decided to submit an 800MB video clip documents in Microsoft Teams to give it a shot. To our surprise, the documents not just opened promptly yet likewise played within Microsoft Teams-- very impressive. It's even more budget-friendly than Slack or Microsoft Teams while providing advanced attributes such as endless message history and also sound and also video clip calls. To cut the story short, the least expensive Workplace 365 Strategy that has Teams in it is called Service Basics. It costs $5 per user per month and you need to buy a yearly strategy to get going.
Within this contrast, I want to look closer at both what these tools supply, however how the tools and also their organization result in an inevitably various platform emphasis. As an example, Microsoft Teams appears to master Office 365 based cooperation, meanwhile, Webex Teams is an incredible virtual conference system with digital whiteboarding, in addition to a concentrate on equipment. But it is essential to acknowledge what solutions as well as Office applications your service get to based upon the strategy selected. As an example, even the Free offering of Microsoft Teams provides access to shadow variations of preferred Workplace Apps, however none other services or downloadable versions of the software application. With more individuals, even more files, more conferences, more cooperation, a lot more video clip meetings, more whatever; larger companies merely need the tools to deal with and also facilitate this higher degree of cooperation and emphasis.
What is the difference between zoom and teams?

Google Hangouts is our pick for best video conferencing software application for small teams. The web video clip variation is called Google Hangouts as well as is what our group makes use of at We Rock Your Internet. When it comes to on the internet conference solutions, we contrast the ideal video conferencing software application and also review why some of the most identifiable companies might not be your finest option.
This is in fact cheaper than Slack's most affordable strategy (Conventional), which costs $6.67 per individual per month when billed every year. It makes the price much extra eye-catching when you take into consideration the truth that $5 invested on Microsoft Teams additionally provides you access to Workplace 365. Nonetheless, if you intend to get the most out of Microsoft Teams and also Slack, you'll need to obtain a paid strategy. In Microsoft Tools, that suggests that you require to have an account that is either Business Premium or Essentials.
As preferred and as useful Zoom has been for many organisations, the safety and personal privacy elements are still not there. Microsoft Teams transcends in the feeling that due to it's association with Office 365, there are added methods to increase your standard protection. Password freshens, credibility symbols and 2 element verification process-- Zoom just can not compete with these extra levels of safety.
According to Microsoft, people in Norway and also the Netherlands turn on video clip as well as use it the most, with about 60% of conferences in the country including video clip. Right here in the United States, the number is about 38%, and in the UK, it has to do with 47%. Microsoft Teams currently has attributes that assist make video talking easier, and extra get on the means. That currently includes history blur, which helps conceal your background during a telephone call.
You can manage whether to hide or reveal yourself in your own video clip display screen for each conference. As an existing Skype for Organisation client, the full shift to Groups may take a little time. Thankfully, the overlapping capabilities of both apps imply you do not need to do it at one time-- there are a couple of different conjunction as well as upgrade settings to consider when selecting your personal course to migration. Although Groups takes much of its DNA from Skype for Business, both are really various solutions. When you placed them side-by-side-- Microsoft Teams vs Skype for Service-- you'll see that Teams provides a lot more, bringing together files, talks, and also applications in one area for a much more full, integrated cooperation remedy.
Why is teams better than Skype?
According to a recent Forrester study, shared workspaces like Teams can save users time—from one to eight hours per user per week, depending on their role. The wins from making the Skype for Business upgrade to Teams are clear: faster, more efficient working and collaboration.
Though Microsoft Teams as well as Skype for Organisation does differ, there is some considerable overlap. Both Skype for Company as well as Microsoft Teams include team chats, straight messaging, and voice calling. Though Microsoft Teams initially really did not have the calling capability that Skype did, it still had both voice chat and video clip calling functionality.
After that you ought to leave the conference, if you're not using Skype to meet with a person. Then it won't utilize a lot information and also you don't need to bother with the video/audio quality while you're not in a conference. Webex has unrestricted free meetings for up to 3 individuals and offers the premium includes complimentary for 2 week.
Still, it's improving all the time, and is certainly something to try if you are taking a look at an alternative to Zoom. Jitsiis a extremely cool and safe open resource app that's recently launched to the marketplace.
As several churches relied on Zoom for live-streaming, Sunday morning ended up being prime-time show for a vital group of Zoom individuals. The largest customer of teleconferencing is India Inc, which began its fiscal and also established targets with a flurry of web conferences. " We have done greater than 350,000 conferences, greater than 60 events with hundreds of individuals in each.
For large range company meetings with coworkers or calls with numerous good friends, Zoom for desktop is the only sensible choice. Free Zoom supplies video conferencing for approximately 100 individuals, supplied the conference competes no more than 40 mins, at which point guests are ejected from the meeting. If you don't mind the headache of dialling back in, though, the host can merely begin another telephone

Reasons why you should adopt a Conference Room Schedule Display for your Office Premises
Tumblr media
It is vital that conference room schedule displays are helpful for booking information in real-time & make sure that the information presented is right for your office premises. The appropriate booking information for your organization is not certainly the right information for your business. You must be able to select what meets the information your conference room management software presents & how they present it. Your conference room displays must be easy to manage & include certain management tools. If you have more than ten meeting rooms it becomes time-consuming & difficult to see the status of each device & manage firmware updates, opening hours, and room display links if it has to be done locally on each device. The conference room availability displays should include the central management tool where you can monitor your devices, push out room display links, push out new firmware, set opening hours, power up & power downtimes, and push out special messages to your employees. LED lights, warranty period, & user authentication is also significant features you should consider when exploring your conference room scheduling solution. User authentication via RFID cards and personal pin code will provide you great tracking opportunities, & ensure you’re your employees only can check-in, prolong, or end meetings that they are attending.
Foster a productive work environment
Consider the ways which make your work life easier & people more productive. The meeting room displays help individuals to find the right room & make reservations easier by linking the meeting room displays directly into your calendar or booking system like Outlook and Microsoft 365. No more running around conference rooms to explore if one is available. There is no more meeting room theft. Meeting room scheduling systems also alleviate the confusion of availability. Less wasted time, better and more productive meetings, the option to extend meeting times, instantly locating appropriate meeting rooms are all features & benefits that enhance your company productivity.
Eliminate room sharking
Room sharking happens when someone is exploring the meeting room for their meeting & simply walks into the room that looks free, but really isn’t. When the person who has actually booked the room shows-up there is an awkward moment. This scenario is not only awkward; it generates an unproductive work environment, where co-workers have unnecessary conflicts over conference rooms. Conference room displays eliminate the room sharking problem as no one needs to walk into the conference room without booking it.
Know instantly when the meeting room is occupied
Large overview displays show meeting room availability at a glance. Instead of going to Outlook and your calendar on your workstation to check availability, employees only need to check the large overview screen for the instant overview of all the meeting rooms, see which are available, & go. So, your meeting can start in just a few seconds, not in minutes.
Check availability on the go
Sometimes it’s just not practical to explore and reserve the conference room for a 10-minute phone call or a quick one-on-one. Most of the individuals just go to the nearest empty conference room without checking if the meeting room is actually available or if somebody has a meeting which starts soon. A conference booking software lets you check instantly if the meeting room is available & for how long from right outside the door.
Adopting a Conference room booking display system by Veris is an essential investment for your organization. Thus, go ahead and gain a win-win situation for your business.

IELTS GENERAL READING TEST 1
You are advised to spend 20 minutes on Questions 1-14. First, read the text below and answer Questions 1-8. A Filling the reservoir Your iron is designed to function using tap water. However, it will last longer if you use distilled water. – Always unplug the iron before filling the reservoir. – Always empty the reservoir after use. B Temperature and steam control Your Moulex iron has two buttons which control the intensity of heat produced by the iron. You can, therefore, adjust the temperature of the iron and the amount of steam being given off depending upon the type of fabric being ironed. – Turn the steam control to the desired intensity. – Turn the thermostat control to the desired temperature. Important: If your iron produces droplets of water instead of giving off steam, your temperature control is set too low. C Spray button This button activates a jet of cold water which allows you to iron out any unintentional creases. Press the button for one second. D Pressing button This button activates a super shot of steam which momentarily gives you an additional 40g of steam when needed. Important: Do not use this more than five successive times. E Suits etc. It is possible to use this iron in a vertical position so that you can remove creases from clothes on coathangers or from curtains. Turning the thermostat control and the steam button to maximum, hold the iron in a vertical position close to the fabric but without touching it. Hold down the pressing button for a maximum of one second. The steam produced is not always visible but is still able to remove creases. Important: Hold the iron at a sufficient distance from silk and wool to avoid all risk of scorching Do not attempt to remove creases from an item of clothing that is being worn, always use a coathanger. F Auto-clean In order that your iron does not become furred up, Moulex have integrated an auto-clean system and we advise you to use it very regularly (1-2 times per month). – Turn the steam control to the off position. – Fill the reservoir and turn the thermostat control to maximum. – As soon as the indicator light goes out, unplug the iron and, holding it over the sink, turn the steam control to auto-clean. Any calcium deposits will be washed out by the steam. Continue the procedure until the reservoir is empty. Questions 1-4 Match the pictures below to the appropriate section in the instructions. Reading passage 3 You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 30-41 which are based on the reading passage below. PAPER RECYCLING A Paper is different from other waste produce because it comes from a sustainable resource: trees. Unlike the minerals and oil used to make plastics and metals, trees are replaceable. Paper is also biodegradable, so it does not pose as much threat to the environment when it is discarded. While 45 out of every 100 tonnes of wood fibre used to make paper in Australia comes from waste paper, the rest comes directly from virgin fibre from forests and plantations. By world standards this is a good performance since the world-wide average is 33 per cent waste paper. Governments have encouraged waste paper collection and sorting schemes and at the same time, the paper industry has responded by developing new recycling technologies that have paved the way for even greater utilisation of used fibre. As a result, industry’s use of recycled fibres is expected to increase at twice the rate of virgin fibre over the coming years. B Already, waste paper constitutes 70% of paper used for packaging and advances in the technology required to remove ink from the paper have allowed a higher recycled content in newsprint and writing paper. To achieve the benefits of recycling, the community must also contribute. We need to accept a change in the quality of paper prod¬ucts; for example stationery may be less white and of a rougher texture. There also needs to be support from the community for waste paper collec¬tion programs. Not only do we need to make the paper available to collectors but it also needs to be separated into different types and sorted from con-taminants such as staples, paperclips, string and other miscellaneous items. C There are technical limitations to the amount of paper which can be recycled and some paper products cannot be collected for re-use. These include paper in the form of books and permanent records, photographic paper and paper which is badly contaminated. The four most common sources of paper for recycling are factories and retail stores which gather large amounts of packaging material in which goods are delivered, also offices which have unwanted business documents and computer output, paper converters and printers and lastly households which discard newspapers and packaging material. The paper manufacturer pays a price for the paper and may also incur the collection cost. D Once collected, the paper has to be sorted by hand by people trained to recognise various types of paper. This is necessary because some types of paper can only be made from particular kinds of recycled fibre. The sorted paper then has to be repulped or mixed with water and broken down into its individual fibres. This mixture is called stock and may contain a wide variety of contaminating materials, particularly if it is made from mixed waste paper which has had little sorting. Various machinery is used to remove other materials from the stock. After passing through the repulping process, the fibres from printed waste paper are grey in colour because the printing ink has soaked into the individual fibres. This recycled material can only be used in products where the grey colour does not matter, such as cardboard boxes but if the grey colour is not acceptable, the fibres must be de-inked. This involves adding chemicals such as caustic soda or other alkalis, soaps and detergents, water-hardening agents such as cal¬cium chloride, frothing agents and bleaching agents. Before the recycled fibres can be made into paper they must be refined or treated in such a way that they bond together. E Most paper products must contain some virgin fibre as well as recycled fibres and unlike glass, paper cannot be recycled indefinitely. Most paper is down-cycled which means that a product made from recycled paper is of an inferior quality to the original paper. Recycling paper is beneficial in that it saves some of the energy, labour and capital that goes into producing virgin pulp. However, recycling requires the use of fossil fuel, a non-renewable energy source, to collect the waste paper from the community and to process it to produce new paper. And the recycling process still creates emissions which require treatment before they can be disposed of safely. Nevertheless, paper recycling is an important economical and environmental practice but one which must be carried out in a rational and viable manner for it to be useful to both industry and the community. Questions 30-36 Complete the summary below of the first two paragraphs of the Reading Passage. Choose ONE OR TWO WORDS from the Reading Passage for each answer. SUMMARY Example From the point of view of recycling, paper has two advantages over minerals and Oil in that firstly it comes from a resource which is (30) ……………………. and secondly it is less threatening to our environment when we throw it away because it is (31) ……………………. Although Australia’s record in the re-use of waste paper is good, it is still necessary to use a combination of recycled fibre and (32) …………………… to make new paper. The paper industry has contributed positively and people have also been encouraged by (33) ……………………. to collect their waste on a regular basis. One major difficulty is the removal of ink from used paper but (34) ……………………. are being made in this area. However, we need to learn to accept paper which is generally of a lower (35) …………………….than before and to sort our waste paper by removing (36) …………………….before discarding it for collection. Questions 37-41 Look at paragraphs C, D, and E and, using the information in the passage, complete the flow chart below. Use ONE OR TWO WORDS for each answer.

Office.com/setup Teams at 3: Everything you need to connect with your teammates and be more productive
Office.com/setup Teams at 3: Everything you need to connect with your teammates and be more productive
Adjusting to remote work and learning
Around the world, millions of people have been impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. It has affected how we work, how we socialize, our family life, and our community life. Here in the Puget Sound, we’ve asked about 50,000 Microsoft employees not to commute to work, and they are joined by tens of thousands of Microsoft employees worldwide who are now working remotely. It hasn’t been easy. Sometimes it’s been downright disorienting. But our team is still connecting. Still collaborating. Still getting our work done.
In the face of COVID-19, there are countless stories from customers who are using Teams to connect and thrive in inspiring ways. A professor at the University of Bologna in Italy shared on Twitter how the school moved 90 percent of courses online to Teams within four days, which is definitely a first in the university’s 900-plus year history. Doctors at St. Luke’s University Health Network in Pennsylvania will use Teams for videoconferencing with patients, especially those who are most vulnerable to coronavirus, as a way to protect both patients and healthcare providers. And the City of Osaka in Japan is using Teams to conduct orientations and training for hundreds of new incoming employees in April.
Stories like these are playing out in countries the world over. We believe that this sudden, globe-spanning move to remote work will be a turning point in how we work and learn. Already, we are seeing how solutions that enable remote work and learning across chat, video, and file collaboration have become central to the way we work. We have seen an unprecedented spike in Teams usage, and now have more than 44 million daily users,* a figure that has grown by 12 million in just the last seven days. And those users have generated over 900 million meetings and calling minutes on Teams each day this week.
It’s very clear that enabling remote work is more important than ever, and that it will continue to have lasting value beyond the COVID-19 outbreak. We are committed to building the tools that help organizations, teams, and individuals stay productive and connected even when they need to work apart.
Transforming the way people work
Over the last three years, thousands of organizations, small and large—including 93 of the Fortune 100—have discovered how Teams can be their hub for teamwork, helping them to stay connected and engaged. Industry-leading organizations are rolling out Teams enterprise-wide. In fact, 20 customers have more than 100,000 employees actively using Teams, including Ernst & Young, SAP, Pfizer, and Continental AG, as well as Accenture, which has 440,000 employees actively using Teams.
What’s new in Teams
We continue to invest in experiences that will make it easier for teams to communicate and collaborate. The new capabilities we are announcing today reflect our commitment to two things: building the very best online meeting experience for our customers; and bringing technological solutions to traditionally underserved professionals, including Firstline and healthcare workers.
We’ve all been in a remote meeting when a participant is loudly typing on their keyboard, or someone is sitting near a vacuum running in the background. Real-time noise suppression helps to minimize distracting background noise, allowing you to hear what’s being said.
In large meetings, it can sometimes be difficult for remote participants to chime in when they have something to say. The raise hand feature lets anyone in the meeting send a visual signal that they have something to say.
Industrial workers need to communicate and collaborate effectively while staying safe. Through a new integration between Teams and RealWear head-mounted devices, Firstline Workers will be able to access information and communicate hands-free with remote experts from their job site.
Conducting B2C virtual appointments is a common requirement for situations like healthcare patient visits, client meetings, or job candidate interviews. Announced earlier this month, the Bookings app in Teams makes it easy to schedule, manage, and conduct virtual appointments.
Teams will soon enable you to pop out chats into a separate window to help you streamline your workflow and move more easily between ongoing conversations.
Offline and low-bandwidth support lets you read chat messages and write responses, even without an internet connection, making it easier for you to move things forward no matter where you are.
We are also expanding the Teams devices ecosystem, with new devices certified for Teams. The Yealink VC210, now generally available, is the first collaboration bar-certified for Teams and brings together speakers, microphones, a camera, and a native Team’s experience to deliver a meeting experience for smaller conference rooms that are simple to install and easy to manage. In addition, the Bose Noise Cancelling headphone 700 UC is available for purchase in late spring.
We’re pleased to introduce Office.com/setup 365 Business Voice in the U.S., a new offering for small and mid-sized businesses that make Teams a complete phone system, as well as a new Office.com/setup 365 Enterprise plan lineup that will include additional licensing options for Firstline Workers.
Unless otherwise stated above, the new capabilities will be available later this year.
Since we launched Teams three years ago, it has evolved to become the hub for teamwork—a place where you can meet, chat, call, and collaborate all in one place. We will continue to improve and expand experiences for all workers to be as productive and connected as possible. As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to push people everywhere into remote work and learning, enabling remote work and remote learning has never felt more important, and we are grateful for the opportunity to stand by our customers at such an extraordinary time.
*We define daily active users as the maximum daily users performing an intentional action in a 24-hour period across the desktop client, mobile client, and web client. Intentional actions include sending or replying to a chat, joining a meeting, or opening a file in Teams. Passive actions like an autoboot, minimizing a screen, or closing the app are not included.

Finance department complete quarterly business reviews faster with Teams
A globally dispersed financial team at Schneider Electric, based in Rueil-Malmaison, France, struggled to collaborate on quarterly business reviews. Team members were unable to coauthor documents and spent unproductive time searching for the latest versions of source files for financial reports. Now, they use Microsoft Teams to discuss, store, and find current files, and update them in real time. Check out the full story here.
University professor sees 900% increase in student engagement by using Teams
The University of New South Wales is a leading research and teaching institution in Sydney, Australia. Engineering faculty member Dr. David Kellermann sought out technology that would increase student engagement and decided to start using Teams with his students. Within a short time, teaching assistants and students have raved about the product because it has fostered peer-to-peer coaching, deeper collaboration and an inclusive learning environment. Signagelive Debuts Meeting Room Sign Widget Solution
UK-based Signagelive has joined the increasingly lengthy list of companies offer pure-play meeting room sign systems or, in this case and many others, applications that do the job, running off a digital signage CMS.
The company’s new Calendar Widgets enables simple connection to Google and Microsoft Office 365 Calendars, and hooks in to a range of customizable HTML5 templates for both full-screen and multi-zone display.
“Displaying calendar information on displays is now a mandatory requirement for corporate, government and education digital signage applications, especially where room calendars need to be visible in reception areas and outside meeting rooms,” saiys Jason Cremins, CEO of Signagelive. “Our free Calendar Widgets bridge the gap between; displaying a Google or Microsoft web calendar on a display and the premium paid-for room booking solutions. In addition, our HTML5-based Calendar Widgets are easily customizable allowing our Value Added Resellers and customers to modify the visual design and layout of the Widgets to match their branding and content requirements.”
Signagelive network administrators, the press release continues, can easily connect their Office 365 and Google GSuite accounts to the Signagelive Calendar Integration App and allocate a person or room calendar to one of a selection of Calendar Widget templates available, before publishing to a Signagelive supported display or player. A Calendar Widget can be displayed permanently on screen or within a playlist containing other media either full-screen or in a zone within a Signagelive multi-zone layout.
In addition to displaying calendar information, intelligence integrated into the Signagelive Calendar Widgets automatically updates the style of each Widget. An example is the background of a Calendar Widget dynamically changing from green (room available) to red (room in use) based on the event in the calendar and the time of day. Where a device, such as the IAdea XDS-1780, incorporates programmable indicator lights the Signagelive Calendar Widget can be configured to change the lights from green to red when the room status changes from ‘available’ to ‘in use’.
The meeting room sign space got crowded quickly. The directory site I started to track it – MeetingRoomSigns.biz – lists almost 60, up from maybe 15 18 months ago. One thing I like about this is the attention to the appearance. I’ve seen some applications that were undoubtedly solid on the application, but looked like they were visually designed by programmers (which CAN work out, but usually doesn’t).  The set of screen grabs I’ve seen for this point to the company spending some money on look and feel.

05.05.17 Friday Links
Tumblr media
A collection of links, articles, and other ephemera I stumbled upon this week but never posted anywhere. For more links, I keep a running list of everything I read on reading.am.
I'm sure you've already seen Jimmy Kimmel's emotional and powerful monologue about his new-born son's birth and heart disease but if you haven't, you really must watch it all. The New York Times tv critic James Poniewozik has a nice essay on the resonance of a monologue like that.
On the subject of late night television — a perpetual favorite topic of mine — I enjoyed this Slate interview with Jason Zinoman, author of the new book, Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night. It covers a lot from Letterman's influence to what he'd be doing if he were still on television, to how he influenced Jimmy Kimmel and how Colbert is doing. I especially loved this knock on Fallon, though: "I think Fallon—the games, the turning late night into a kid’s birthday party is what bugs me. It was remarkable to watch his monologue on Saturday Night Live last week. There were no jokes or perspective. It’s just singing a song. He has drained comedy out of late-night comedy. It’s kind of a remarkable moment where a late-night host did a monologue without a single attempt at being funny. The attempt is to be fun, not funny." (Zinoman was also on WTF a few weeks ago and highly recommend giving it a listen. And Vulture has an excerpt from the book.
The first trailer for Kimail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon's romantic comedy, The Big Sick, is out and it looks great. The New Yorker has a nice profile of Nanjiani's career and The New York Times looks at the film as a unique take on the rom-com genre. It comes out in June on Amazon — I can't wait!
Dubai has introduced its own font, in the spirit of "free expression": "The new font comes in both Arabic and Latin script and is available as part of Microsoft Office 365. On Sunday, Prince Hamdan shared a video on Twitter that presented it as a powerful tool for self-expression. 'Expression knows no boundaries or limits,' the video said. 'Expression is strength and freedom. It defines who you are.' As it turns out, though, there are quite a few boundaries and limits on expression in Dubai and across the United Arab Emirates, where the news media is censored to remove criticism of the government or the coalition of royal families that controls it."
There are two (!!) new Ellsworth Kelly shows opening in New York City today, one of his final paintings completed before he died last year, and another of his plant drawings. Here's The New York Times on his final works: “These last paintings took more time to do because of his health,” he said. “In his last three months, Ellsworth started signing drawings from the ’50s and ’60s that he never signed. It was a harbinger of his acceptance of the end. After Kelly had died, Mr. Marks said that his artist friends all told him the same thing: 'You do know that is every artist’s hope — basically dying with a paintbrush in your hand.'” Can't wait to see this next week!
Annie Lowrey, in The Atlantic looks at the explosion of the phrase "late capitalism" and where it came from: "For my own part, I vaguely remembered it coming from the writings of Karl Marx—the decadence that precedes the revolution? I polled a few friends, and they all sort of remembered the same thing, something to do with 19th-century Europeans and the inherent instability of the capitalist system. This collective half-remembering turned out to be not quite right. “It’s not Marx’s term,” William Clare Roberts, a political scientist at McGill University, told me."
Speaking of capitalism, The New York Times Book Review reviews Duff McDonald's new book, The Golden Passport: Harvard Business School, the Limits of Capitalism, and the Moral Failure of the MBA Elite, which sounds so interesting: "In virtually every instance, McDonald contends, Harvard has obsessively pursued money, sending a disproportionate number of its graduates to consulting firms beginning in the 1950s, to Wall Street in the 1980s and to entrepreneurial start-ups once initial public offerings became the rage in the 1990s — and provided intellectual justifications for its actions."
Here's a great piece from Casey Williams on philosophy's critical tools in the age of Trump: "Trump’s playbook should be familiar to any student of critical theory and philosophy. It often feels like Trump has stolen our ideas and weaponized them. For decades, critical social scientists and humanists have chipped away at the idea of truth. We’ve deconstructed facts, insisted that knowledge is situated and denied the existence of objectivity. The bedrock claim of critical philosophy, going back to Kant, is simple: We can never have certain knowledge about the world in its entirety. Claiming to know the truth is therefore a kind of assertion of power."
I'm still loving Kendrick Lamar's latest album, Damn., and I loved Hua Hsu's review of it in The New Yorker: “Religion is often invoked in hip-hop in a metaphorical way, a method of dramatizing one’s struggles against temptation or judgment. Two of last year’s most acclaimed releases, Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo and Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book, turned spirituality into a kind of gilt-edged aesthetic. Those artists’ songs were radiant and euphoric; you wanted to see the light that they saw. Until ‘god.’, the album’s penultimate track, Lamar’s version of faith feels heavy-handed and wearying: far from the megachurch’s spotlit pulpit, he’s more like a street-corner preacher whom people go out of their way to avoid. God is invoked not merely to lend texture to his triumphs. Lamar’s faith reminds him of the possibility of judgment, of an old-fashioned belief in the discrete categories of good and bad."
Rachel Some reviews the new Amazon series, Jill Soloway's I Love Dick, for The New Republic, and looks at how the critical theory injected in the book its based on makes it way into the show. I watched the first episode — can't wait to see the rest.
Great piece from Farhad Manjoo on Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook, and fake news: Zuckerberg used to be a nervous speaker, but he has become much less so. He speaks quickly but often unloads full paragraphs of thought, and sometimes his arguments are so polished that they sound rehearsed, which happened often that morning. ‘2016 was an interesting year for us,’ he said as the three of us, plus a P.R. executive, sat around a couple of couches in the glass-walled conference room where he conducts many of his meetings. It was an understatement and a nod to the obvious: Facebook, once a mere app on your phone, had become a global political and cultural force, and the full implications of that transformation had begun to come into view last year."
