Drake and Meek Mill’s feud went on for longer than many thought it would, but it came to a close on Saturday night (Sept. 8) when Drizzy welcomed his former foe on stage.

The two stars’ public feud began in July 2015, when Meek Mill used social media to accuse Drake of not supporting the release of his album Dreams Worth More Than Money, along with dropping the bomb that Drake didn’t write his own lyrics. From there, Drake dropped the two-piece combo of “Charged Up” and the eventual Grammy-winning “Back to Back,” while Meek Mill released the lesser received “Wanna Know.” By the time Drake celebrated with a performance at his OVO Fest that summer, the beef was considered won, but the two continued sending shots each other’s way for months.

The beef eventually simmered down, with Drake offering his verbal support to Meek Mill in 2017 when the latter was sent to prison. In May of this year, Meek Mill said that he would be open to working with Drake again in the future. “It’s possible. Anything is possible,” Meek said. The two have already created two bangers, with “R.I.C.O.” and the 2012 single “Amen.” Drake also previously had a working relationship with Meek’s Maybach Music Group comrade Rick Ross. With the beef officially resolved, hopefully, this will result in great music from the two camps.

Tourné en plein Compton, Real Muthaphuckkin G's débauche les frangins B.G. Knocc Out et Dresta en featuring, Cold 187um en cameo (l’homme qui a vraiment inventé le G-funk NDLR) et même l’acteur Anthony Johnson qui interprétait « Sleazy-E » dans Fuck Wit Dre Day (pour cette fois-ci le faire abattre des mains d’Eazy-E en personne).

Bien que tout le monde ait conscience que le « little big man » de la côte ouest ne soit pas le emcee le plus technique de la terre, il n’en appuie pas moins là où ça fait mal (Snoop est traité d’anorexique, Dre accusé de battre des femmes et d’avoir abusé du mascara dans ses jeunes années) sur les sample de It’s Funky Enough et Eazy-Duz-It... deux titres produits par le bon docteur Young période Ruthless.

La ligne pour la postérité ? « Dre Day only meant Eazy's payday » De un, parce qu’Eazy-E touche des royautés sur les sorties de Dr. Dre, y compris quand il le clashe. De deux, parce que Real Muthaphuckkin G's sera son titre solo classé le plus haut dans les charts (42ème du Billboard).

Les forces en présence : Drake contre Meek Mill

Vexé que le Canadien n’ait pas participé à la promo de son album Dreams Worth More Than Money sur Twitter (et peut-être aussi un peu parce qu’il lui a piqué la vedette sur son morceau R.I.C.O. présent sur ce même album), Meek Mill pense lâcher une bombe en révélant ô surprise que Drake n’écrit pas ses textes. Dommage pour lui que personne ne l’ait alors prévenu les années 90 étaient terminées.

Dans un monde virtuel ou le premier qui s’énerve a perdu et où les bases fans font la loi, la battle de MC qu’espérait le Philadelphien tourne au concours de CM, déluge de mèmes et de hashtags (#MeekMillBeLike) à l’appui.

Pire, après Charged Up Drake l’achève sur son propre terrain en lui balançant dans les gencives le freestyle Back to Back. Meek en est tellement groggy (sitôt sortie, sa réponse I Wanna Know est oubliée) que 3Peat, le troisième diss track prévu à son encontre, restera dans les cartons.

Cas un peu particulier que ce Sucker M.C.'s puisqu’il ne s’agit pas d’un morceau clash à proprement parler (l’essentiel du texte tourne autour de la percée du groupe dans l’industrie). Tout juste Run et DMC (enfin surtout Run) lâchent de çà et là des piques que l’on pourrait croire adressées à un concurrent en particulier sans pour autant qu’aucun nom ne soit cité nulle part.

Non contente de faire rentrer le hip hop dans la modernité (ou quand le boom bap enterre définitivement les influences disco des pionniers tant au niveau de l’image que du son), cette face B inaugure ainsi sans le savoir ce qu’on appellera par la suite le « sub’ » ou le diss subliminal, soit en 2018 l’une des techniques marketing les plus éculées pour s’assurer d’avoir une place au centre des conversations sans se mouiller – cf. les serpents de mer Cardi B versus Nicki Minaj et autre Drake versus Jay Z.

Oui Sucker M.C.'s est l’un des titres les plus importants de l’histoire du rap.

La ligne pour la postérité ? « I'm DMC in the place to be/I go to St. John's University! » qui réussit à donner un côté « too cool for school » à l’école.

  4. Ether (2001)

Les forces en présence : Nas contre Jay Z

Sur le point de sombrer dans l’oubli à force d’albums sans saveur, Nasir Jones retrouve le feu sacré en se disputant avec Shawn Carter la couronne de roi de New-York laissée vacante à la mort de Notorious B.I.G.

Après multiples escarmouches, il finit par sortir l’artillerie lourde avec la décharge d’énergie brute Ether.

Démarrant sur une reprise des coups de feu du Who Shot Ya? de Biggie et sur un sample de 2Pac s’époumonant « Fuck Jay Z » sur Fuck Friendz, Nasty Nas enchaîne ensuite les kaméhaméhas : artistique (accusation de vol de rimes), vie privée (révélation de sa relation avec Foxy Brown), déterrage de dossier (la chemisette de Hawaiian Sophie), jeux de mots graveleux (« Gay-Z and Cock-A-Fella Records »), absolument tout y passe.

L’impact est tel que pendant longtemps dans le rap « se faire Ether » sera synonyme de se prendre la pilule.

La ligne pour la postérité ? « Eminem murdered you on your own shit » qui pointe le fait que Jay Z se soit allégrement fait voler la vedette par le Slim Shady sur son propre morceau Renegade. Là encore l’expression est rentrée dans le langage courant.

   3. The Takeover (2001)

Les forces en présence : Jay Z contre Nas

Tout comme la question de savoir qui des Chocapic ou des Frosties sont les meilleures céréales ou qui de 2Pac ou Biggie est le meilleur rappeur, déterminer qui de Nas ou de Jay Z a sorti la meilleure diss track divisera les rangs des fanatiques jusqu’à la fin des temps.

Si avec le recul l’avantage est donné au premier, c’est que musicalement le très calculé Takeover a quand même mieux vieilli (merci à la prod’ du jeune Kanye et son magistral sample des Doors), tandis qu’Hova devenu entretemps « bigger than rap » a fait de Nas son employé en le signant en 2006 sur Def Jam.

Une démonstration de force qui en ferait presque oublier que Prodigy des Mobb Deep se prend au passage une sacrée fessée.

La ligne pour la postérité ? « That's a one-hot-album-every-10-year average » qui descend en flamme la discographie de son rival au moment même où Jay sort Blueprint, l’un des plus grands classiques du rap US.

   2. Hit’em Up (1996)

Les forces en présence : 2Pac contre tous ceux affiliés de près ou de loin au clan Bad Boy (Lil Cease, Chino XL, Lil' Kim...)

Persuadé que les new-yorkais Puff Daddy et Notorious B.I.G. ont tenté de le faire assassiner deux ans plus tôt, 2Pac s’est depuis embarqué dans une guerre des côtes sans merci qui culmine avec ce Hit’em Up aussi vindicatif que venimeux.

Loin de donner dans la subtilité, ‘Pac et ses Outlawz font feu de tout bois quitte à taper très en dessous de la ceinture (à ceux qui trouvent que Pusha T va trop loin en attaquant Noah ‘40’ Shebib sur sa sclérose en plaques, rappelons que Prodigy est ici raillé pour souffrir de drépanocytose) ou à directement menacer de mort leurs ennemis.

Le décès par balle du Californien d'adoption trois mois après la sortie du titre donnera alors à ces paroles une gravité nouvelle et changera profondément le visage du rap. Non seulement jamais plus un clash ne connaîtra une telle intensité (et Dieu merci), mais depuis cet évènement tragique les inimitiés entre rappeurs tiennent plus du combat de catch que du règlement de comptes à O.K. Corral.

La ligne pour la postérité ? Le sauvage « I fucked your bitch you fat motherfucker! » qui aujourd’hui encore alimente les conversations.

  1. The Bridge is Over (1987)

Les forces en présence : Boogie Down Productions contre tout le Juice Crew

Tout commence lorsque MC Shan rappe sans trop d’arrière-pensées sur The Bridge produit par Marley Marl que le hip hop est né à Queensbridge (« This is the place where stars are born »). Cette hérésie déclenche l'ire de KRS-One, bien au fait que, le 11 août 1973, DJ Kool Herc s’est pour la première fois mis à rapper devant une foule lors d’une house party au 1520 Sedgwick Avenue dans le Bronx.

« Les Guerres du Pont » débutent alors entre « QB » et « BX ». Des guerres qui n’en ont que le nom puisque qu’il s’agit uniquement de prouver toute sa crédibilité et toute son authenticité au micro (et au micro seulement), et ce sans (trop) s’insulter.

Point d’orgue de ces échanges, The Bridge is Over vient clôre les débats grâce à son approche beaucoup plus radio friendly que la concurrence. Et c’est ainsi qu’autour de cet édifice de la culture rap se sont cristallisés pour le pire et pour le meilleur mythes et légendes encore d’actualité de nos jours (celui de l’âge d’or, celui de la saine compétition qui canalise la violence, celui du morceau qui stoppe une carrière...).

La ligne pour la postérité ? « Manhattan keeps on makin' it/Brooklyn keeps on takin' it/Bronx keeps creatin' it/And Queens keeps on fakin' it » qui a quand même réussi à jeter le discrédit sur tout un quartier pendant de très longues années.
