Note
i have a somewhat odd question, but you strike me as the best person to ask.
so. i downloaded this free crochet pattern for an enormous millipede plush. just an absolutely massive guy. (link for those interested!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i want to make one with more realistic colors, possibly even based on a real species, but im not the slightest bit knowledgeable in that area. do you have any recommendations? (also would love recommendations for length/legs because the pattern works for any length)
pattern seems to represent a juliform millipede, so here’s a few strikingly colored ones from around the world
if you’re willing to depart from the millipede theme, the end result looks more like a velvet worm with those puffy legs, and I’d argue those are even cuter:

Asif Ahmad: A Young Entrepreneur from Bihar
Bihar, the state I proudly call home, has long faced significant challenges in key areas such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Growing up in Bihar, I personally witnessed the struggles of talented individuals forced to leave their home state in search of better opportunities. This experience became the driving force behind my mission to transform Bihar into a thriving hub where every individual—no matter their background—can achieve their full potential without having to migrate for a better life. Over the years, I have focused on addressing some of Bihar’s most pressing issues: limited access to quality education, a shortage of healthcare services, and the need for sustainable infrastructure.
Education: A Cornerstone for Empowerment
Education has always been at the heart of my vision for Bihar. As a young person here, I saw the immense potential in our youth but recognized the stark gap in access to quality education. Many young people had to leave Bihar to pursue their academic goals, and this migration was a barrier to both personal growth and regional development. After returning to India from my studies abroad, I focused on strengthening local institutions like Madhubani Medical College and the Madhubani Institute of Nursing & Paramedical Sciences. These institutions provide world-class education in Bihar, offering opportunities for local youth to thrive in their home state. By training students locally, particularly in healthcare, we aim to ensure that Bihar retains its brightest minds and creates a sustainable environment for them to contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth.
Healthcare: Making Healthcare Accessible and Affordable
Access to quality healthcare has been another critical issue I’ve worked to address. Growing up in rural Bihar, I saw firsthand how families struggled to access basic medical services. The nearest healthcare facilities were often far away, and the cost of treatment was prohibitive for many. The shortage of trained medical professionals was also a major barrier to care. In 2019, I became deeply involved with Madhubani Medical College, which offers an MBBS program and is attached to a 600-bed hospital providing affordable treatment. With consultation fees as low as Rs 30 and room charges just Rs 150 per day, the hospital aims to make quality healthcare accessible to everyone. But this initiative is about more than just addressing immediate needs; it’s about building a self-sustaining healthcare infrastructure that can serve future generations of Biharis.
Infrastructure: Building the Foundation for Growth
For Bihar to truly prosper, modernization of its infrastructure is essential. This includes building reliable roads, improving transportation networks, and upgrading utilities. As part of Astaus India Pvt Ltd, the company I co-founded, we are working on various infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity, boosting the local economy, and enhancing the quality of life for Bihar’s residents. From eco-friendly construction to sustainable urban planning, we are committed to creating modern infrastructure that supports long-term economic growth and ensures Bihar can compete with more developed regions.
Creating an Ecosystem of Opportunity
Beyond education, healthcare, and infrastructure, my broader vision for Bihar is to foster an environment of opportunity, particularly for its youth. By focusing on entrepreneurship, job creation, and economic empowerment, I want Bihar to become a state where young people don’t feel the need to leave for better opportunities. Supporting local entrepreneurs and small businesses is key to creating a thriving, self-sustaining economy. This will encourage innovation, generate employment, and help the state build an ecosystem that empowers its citizens.
A Broader Mission: Empowering India
While Bihar will always be at the center of my efforts, I also recognize that the challenges of education and healthcare are not unique to this state. That’s why I am also working on initiatives outside Bihar, such as the establishment of Kashmir Medical College, the first private medical college in the region. By addressing disparities in education and healthcare across India, my broader mission is to create an equitable system that benefits all citizens, regardless of where they live.
Looking Ahead: A Brighter Future for Bihar
Looking to the future, I envision a Bihar that thrives—a state where every individual has the opportunity to succeed, where youth can find fulfilling careers at home, and where accessible healthcare and modern infrastructure support the overall well-being of the population. I believe that with the right investments in sustainable development, a focus on innovation, and collaboration across all sectors, Bihar can become a leader in economic and social progress in India. The journey will take time, but with each step, we are laying the foundation for a more prosperous and equitable future. Bihar’s transformation is not just a dream; it is a vision I am committed to making a reality, one initiative at a time.

Canada Ends Fast-Track Student Visa Streams: Impact on International Students and Future Implications
Tumblr media
Canada introduced a faster study permit process for international students from certain countries in 2018 through the Student Direct Stream (SDS). Over the next few years, this program expanded to include more countries, with additions in 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2020, a separate stream called the Nigeria Student Express (NSE) was also launched.
However, on November 8, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada IRCC announced changes. The SDS and NSE streams are now being discontinued, and going forward, all international students must use the regular study permit application process.
The official statement emphasized: “Canada aims to improve the integrity of its programs, protect students from potential exploitation, and ensure all applicants have equal and fair access to the study permit process. The goal is also to enhance their overall academic experience. As part of this commitment, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE) programs have officially ended as of 2:00 pm ET on November 8, 2024.”
Collaboration Between the Government and the Education Sector Led to the Development of Specialized Study Permit Streams
The creation of these special study permit streams was the result of collaborative efforts between the education sector and the government.
Andrew Champagne, who is the Director of Programs and Partnerships at Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan), explained: “The Student Direct Stream (SDS) came about after years of creative collaboration between Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan). Earlier versions of the program improved how information was shared, which later helped develop the Designated Learning Institution (DLI) compliance reporting system. The Student Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), created in partnership with Scotiabank, provided students with access to funds needed for their stay in Canada. Requirements such as language test scores and police clearances also boosted trust in the system, leading to higher approval rates and faster processing times.”
Although the SDS was widely used by students from India, it also helped reduce student risks and made the application process more predictable for both students and educational institutions. CICan remains dedicated to partnering with IRCC and its member institutions to develop new policy ideas, with a focus on program integrity. The organization also emphasizes the importance of better data sharing between IRCCs and DLIs throughout Canada.
Who Will Be Impacted?
Tumblr media
With the immediate discontinuation of the SDS and NSE programs, students from certain countries who previously enjoyed faster processing times (often under 20 days) will now experience the standard processing timelines. These students used to benefit from expedited processing if they met specific requirements, such as proof of funds, medical examinations, and language proficiency. The affected countries include:
Antigua and Barbuda
Brazil
China
Colombia
Costa Rica
India
Morocco
Nigeria
Pakistan
Peru
Philippines
Senegal
St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Vietnam
Trinidad and Tobago
Students from these regions may now face longer wait times for their study permit applications.
Lack of Warning Creates Confusion
“The Canadian government likely has its reasons for implementing so many policy changes so quickly,” stated Andrew Ness, Dean of International Education at Humber College. “However, my main concern is the significant impact these sudden changes have had on our students and partners worldwide. This situation is a prime example — a major change was announced without prior notice or preparation, even though immigration authorities had multiple opportunities to inform the national body for international education in the five days before the announcement at the [annual CBIE conference]. Despite several meetings with IRCC representatives during the event, we were reassured that 'no major changes were expected.' Yet, just a few days later, this abrupt decision was made. It’s unfair to our students, our representatives, and to Canada’s reputation as a welcoming and thoughtful study destination.”
Mike Henniger, CEO of Illume Student Advisory Services, expressed similar frustrations: “Canada’s education brand has taken multiple hits recently, and it’s becoming challenging to separate one issue from another. The sudden end of the SDS program has left many students mid-application, now scrambling to adjust. Our agency partners are worried about the increased time and effort needed for applications moving forward. I am troubled by the inconsistencies between regions like South Asia and Africa, especially regarding processing times and visa refusals. In Africa, where we have a team of 25 staff members supporting clients, we’re facing numerous deferrals and visa rejections for strong candidates, along with a chaotic admissions process overall. Many institutions are now focusing on students who are easier to recruit, often sacrificing diversity in the process. I hope that ending SDS will lead to a more efficient, transparent process that ensures fair treatment for all students aspiring to study in Canada.”

Just a few days after writing a post about the RG Kar Medical College rape case that was brought to light on India's independence day, another case of multiple sexual assaults on women working in Malayalam cinema has been revealed on Raksha Bandhan.
Back in 2017, a prominent Malayali actress was abducted from her car and raped by men. Out of the eight suspects, Dileep, arguable one of the most famous Malayali actor, was also accused. The case never went forward, remained in its trial stages, and Dileep continues to get paid in millions even now. However, just to help the women in their workplaces, a committee was established with women's safety in mind. And now it has been revealed that this committee failed spectacularly.
Women are asked for sexual favours just to get a role in the movie. They are not provided basic necessities like access to the washroom. They are sexually harassed by prominent men because most movies usually ALWAYS have men as producers, directors and actors and these men use their power to destroy lives.
A 235 page report, consisting of statements made by key witnesses, describing all the sexual exploitation they faced was submitted to the government back in 2019! Roughly five years later only was it made public. Ironically, a recent Malayalam movie was given a national award for handling the topic of sexual exploitation quite spectacularly. It would've been hilarious had it not been such a serious topic.
Women get raped everywhere. On the roads, in their workplaces, even in their homes and yet people keep their 'neutral' stance where they claim the don't know much about the case and, 'not all men are like this!' Wake up. Wake up and look at the hellhole you live in and hate it with all your heart. Hate the way we've stooped so low that we still think rapists deserve a chance. Fight against it and maybe with small efforts from all of us, we could establish a world where our security is truly a right.
