The news was shocking. There were supposed to be some rules, some accords, even in war. Hospital ships had heen considered inviolate ever since the Great Hyperspace War. Even though the orbiting ships were easy targets, the concept of damaging or destroying one was anathema to civilized beings.    Or had been, until now . . .

Happy 19th release anniversary to MedStar I: Battle Surgeons by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry! Often referred to as M.A.S.H in Star Wars, this novel features padawan Barriss Offee as a Jedi healer working with a small medical unit to help injured clone troopers.

..... I could go on. Um, most of these are older novels, but they are superior quality, trust me. The new comics are generally better than the new novels, just in storytelling and characterization. Also, I'm a Prequels lover, so I've only read a few books set after RotS. But the Rogue One lead-in books are good.
Matthew Stover is the best Star Wars writer ever. Reading his stuff is worth whatever it takes to get your hands on it!
While i'm finishing Thrawn: Alliances..
Can people reblog with other star wars book recommendations please :)

Note
Hi, reading your posts explaining part of sw universe (your post really make me think in some aspects of sw that I have never thought) fragments of books and comics make me want to read it, do you have or know some post to indicate how I should start in the prequels stories and what books are the most interesting according you? I have tried to understand how to start, but its a bit confused due to the big numbers of books/comics (specially due to the legend and new canon). Thanks you very much!
Hi! I’ve a book rec tag where I suggest PT books, if you’re interested. As for where to start, my usual advice is start with what you love: your favorite movies and characters. Forget the idea that there’s a right place to start or that you have to read everything to enjoy the EU. You already know the story, the EU is about exploring the details so it does’t really matter where you start because you already know exactly how it goes. The EU does not have to be a chronological experience.
Let me tell you how I started: wookieepedia. A knew a little about the EU but the wookieepedia got me deep into it. I used to read Anakin’s page all time and it was filled with little bits of information but I needed more. It wasn’t enough to know *something* happened to Anakin, I wanted to experience it for myself. That’s when I started checking the sources at the bottom of the articles. It wasn’t enough to know Shmi and Anakin belonged to Gardulla before Watto, I wanted to know *how* they lived. So I checked the source and read the book. My first two SW books were Stover’s Revenge of the Sith Novelization and James Luceno’s Labyrinth of evil because they focus on events related to my favorite SW movie (ROTS) and they heavily featured my favorite character (Anakin).
I didn’t read them because I wanted to know the EU or be THAT kind of fan. I was just curious so I started with what I was most curious about. Real talk, when I first heard about the EU and thought about exploring I was thought that the only quality content was Timothy Zahn’s OT books. It’s been 20 years and I still haven’t finished a single one of his books. It’s not because they are bad, I’m simply not interested in that part of the story so I don’t go there. Don’t fall into the trap of believing you NEED to know everything. That’s gatekeeping and it’s been used to keep away from the EU for years. So my advice is always read what you want to, if you want to.
Here are my favorite PT novels (in chronological* order):
From TPM to AOTC
Darth Plagueis by James Luceno
The Life and Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi by Ryder Windham
Jedi Apprentice Special Edition: Deceptions by Jude Watson

last song: Wish You Were Here, NSP cover
currently reading: For once, nothing much. Have packed up a majority of my books and am not buying new ones.  Listening to Battle Surgeons {MedStar I} by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry, which is set during the Clone Wars.
As civil war between the Republic and the Separatists rages across the galaxy, nowhere is the fighting more fierce than on the swamp world of Drongar, where a beleaguered mobile hospital unit wages a never-ending war of its own….
A surgeon who covers his despair with wisecracks; another who faces death and misery head-on, venting his emotions through beautiful music … A nurse with her heart in her work and her eye on a doctor … A Jedi Padawan on a healing mission without her Master … These are the core members of a tiny med unit serving the jungle world of Drongar, where battle is waged over the control of a priceless native plant, and an endless line of medlifters brings in the wounded and dying—mostly clone troopers, but also soldiers of all species.
While the healers work desperately to save lives, others plot secretly to profit from the war—either by dealing on the black market or by manipulating the events of the war itself. In the end, though, all will face individual tests, and only those of compassionate hearts and staunch spirits can hope to survive to fight another day.
last movie: Wonder Woman 1984 aka 3 Years of My Life I Will Never Get Back. I didn’t really hate it...I kind of just ...nothing-ed it. It bored the ever living life out of me.
currently watching: I don’t really watch tv. But I absolutely have nothing to do with Herr Maus, aka Disney. Sometimes I will watch something that directly impacts my rp. Deadwood, NY Cop Shows. It’s a terrible fucking shame that they ended American Gods after two seasons.
currently craving: my sense of sanity to come back as I circle the drain of depression.
coming for: Anyone who would like to, Pirate Up.

Jos glanced around and saw Klo Merit. The Equani was easy to spot; he towered nearly a head taller than any other biped in the crowd. The pale gray fur and whiskers helped, too. Jos was glad to see the Rimsoo's minder there. The Equani-what few were left, after a solar flare had scorched their homeworld-were intensely empathetic beings, capable of understanding and psychoanalyzing nearly every other known intelli-gent species. Jos knew that Merit, in many ways, carried the emotional weight of the entire camp on his sleek, broad shoulders. Now, however, he seemed caught up in the spell Zan was weaving, just like everyone else. Good, Jos thought. He remembered a quote from Bahm Gilyad, who had formalized the rules and responsibilities of his profession five thousand years before, during the Stark Hyperspace Conflict: "The sick and the injured will always have a healer to salve their wounds, but to whom does the healer go?" As Zan played on, Jos found it easier not to think about the war, or how tired he was, or how many shards of metal he had removed or perforated organs he had replaced in the last few hours. The music carried him to its depths, raised him to its heights, and refreshed him like a week's worth of rest. He realized that, in a great many ways, his friend was doing for the doctors and nurses of Rimsoo Seven what the Jedi had done for the wounded clone troops-he was healing them.

A litany that every Jedi student grew up hearing: When in doubt, trust the Force. You may not always interpret it correctly, but the Force never lies.

When Zan had died, it had fallen to Jos to clean out his friend's belongings. He had packed up most of the stuff-the quetarra, clothes, book readers, and the like-and had it shipped to Zan's family, back on Talus. But hidden away under Zan's cot had been something he hadn't included in the personal effects package: Zan's supply of processed bota. It was illegal to possess the stuff here. All the harvested and stabilized bota went to other worlds and systems, where it was worth its weight in precious gems. Like out-world plantations where the locals produced fruit and crops too expensive for them to eat, or firestone pits where every day miners found stones worth more than a year of their pay, or anyplace else where those who did the scut work reaped none of the rewards, bota was deemed too valuable to waste on troopers. But Zan hadn't accepted that. He'd managed to get hold of a small amount of the miracle growth and field-tested it as much as was feasible, given the necessarily clandestine nature of his protocols. Even under less-than-ideal conditions, bota had cured every resistant infection a Fett-clone had developed on this world. The irony of being on a planet where the plant grew like a weed and not able to use it to save lives had not been lost on either Zan or Jos. Zan had risked his career and liberty to secretly treat patients with it. Jos hadn't been willing to go that far, but he had turned a blind eye to his friend's illegal actions.
