Mechanochemical synthesis: New theory explains reaction rate acceleration
In contrast to conventional organic synthesis, mechanochemistry does not use solvents that eventually become industrial wastes. Thus, mechanochemistry is environmentally friendly and enables us to perform organic synthesis using reactants that poorly dissolve into common solvents. As solvents are not used, reactants used for organic synthesis are often in the solid state. Previous experimental studies have suggested that the force applied by the ball to the system accelerates the chemical reaction, but it is not well understood how macroscopic forces influence chemical reactions on the molecular scale. Compared to conventional methods for organic synthesis, the theoretical foundation of mechanochemical organic synthesis is still in its infancy. A deeper understanding of reaction kinetics within mechanochemical reactions will be crucial for advancing the field towards becoming a conventional strategy itself.

Russian scientists have discovered a new material that can kill the flu virus, and they hope it could be used to make face masks to help protect people against both the flu virus and the new coronavirus.Scientists hope a material they claim kills bacteria and viruses could be used to make masks to help combat the new coronavirus.The main ingredient of this material is nano-silver with antibacterial properties, which is prepared by using a melt-blown process. Alexander Zanovic Medvedev, who worked on the project, explains that the process can be used to make polypropylene microfibers one micrometer in diameter. Medvedev is currently in charge of a laboratory at the Siberian branch of the Russian academy of sciences. It is unclear whether the study has been published in a peer-reviewed journal. In a statement, Mr. Medvedev said he and his colleagues put the material inside a conventional three-ply surgical mask.The researchers tested the mask against influenza a viruses as well as staphylococcus and e. coli, said Nikolai Zakharovic Lyakhov, principal researcher at the institute of chemistry and technology. When the team compared the new material to a regular mask, the number of viruses penetrating the mask was 10,000 times higher. "Our material kills and completely suppresses the virus," Lyakhov said. However, he added that the mechanism of how the material works was not fully understood and would have to be studied in other research projects.The team believes the material could protect people from swine flu for up to 10 hours, compared with regular masks that need to be replaced every hour or two.The new mask will be reusable but will be more expensive than conventional masks, according to a press release issued by the institute of solid state chemistry and mechanochemistry of the Siberian branch of the Russian academy of sciences.
Lyakhov said he spoke with infectious disease experts. Since the masks kill the virus, "other viruses that are likely to cause respiratory infections are likely to be affected in the same way," the experts said.

Simple tool could facilitate discovery of new mechanically-responsive materials
The exploration of mechanophores continues to expand the practical application of these molecules in materials science, organic synthesis, and pharmaceuticals due to their ability to change physically or chemically in response to force. A mechanophore discovered a few years ago by University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign chemists, including Prof. Jeffrey Moore and graduate student Yunyan Sun, can release controlled amounts of carbon monoxide when triggered by mechanical force, which can potentially be used in the human body as a drug to treat diseases and conditions. Called NEO, it depends on the breaking of carbon-carbon bonds, which is common in a variety of mechanochemical transformations. But a major challenge in studying mechanophores is understanding and predicting the reactivity of breaking the C–C bond. Typically, that requires a lot of experimentation and calculation due to the unpredictable vectoral nature of forces like pushing or pulling.

The discovery could be used to engineer more efficient materials.
Durham, North Carolina – In a forced game of molecular tug-of war, some s healthcare  trings of atoms can act like a lever, accelerating reactions 1000 times faster than other molecules. The discovery suggests that scientists could use these molecular levers to drive chemical and mechanical reactivity among atoms and ultimately engineer more efficient materials.
“We are interested in designing new, stress-responsive materials, so we are trying to develop reactions that are very slow normally but that can be accelerated efficiently by force,” said Duke chemist Steve Craig, who headed the research.
In recent experiments, Craig and his team found that a molecule made with a polynorbornene backbone can act as a lever to open a ring embedded within the molecule 1000 times faster than a similar ring being tugged at on a polybutadiene scaffold. The results, which appear in Nature Chemistry, suggest that a simple change in the backbone may affect the how fast mechanically assisted reactions occur.
Scientists are interested in this type of molecular tug-of-war because many materials break down after repeated cycles of tugging, stress and other forces. “If we can channel usually destructive forces into constructive pathways, we could trigger reactions that make the material stronger when and where it is most useful,” Craig said. Researchers might then be able to extend the material’s lifetime, which might in the long term have applications ranging from composites for airplane frames to biomedical implants.
In the experiment, Craig, who is a professor and chair of the chemistry department, and his team used the equivalent of microscopic tweezers to grab onto two parts of atomic chains and pulled them so that they would break open, or react, in certain spots. The team predicted that one molecule would react more efficiently th cashless vending  an the other but was surprised to find that the force-induced rates differed by three orders of magnitude, an amount that suggests that the polynorbornene backbone can actually accelerate forced reactions the way a crowbar quickens pulling a nail from a wall.
Craig said changes to the molecular group undergoing the reaction may have a much smaller effect than changes to nearby, unreactive molecules like those on the backbone. It is also a good starting point to identify other molecular backbones that are easy to make and have the largest response to changes in nearby reactions, features Craig said might help in developing even better, more responsive materials.
