Bali Navigates Tourism Challenges and Tattoo Tourism Rise
Bali is renowned as a heavenly getaway, yet its once-relaxed atmosphere is evolving. To address the misconduct of tourists, Bali's authorities established a specialized tourism law enforcement team in February.
According to Dewa Nyoman Rai Dharmadi, head of Bali’s Civil Service Police Unit, they have encountered instances of visitors resorting to begging after depleting their resources. Dharmadi emphasized the importance of preserving a hospitable environment for everyone, especially amid occasional disruptions at tourist sites.
Over 70 officers are deployed across popular areas like Canggu, Seminyak, and Kuta, ensuring compliance with respectful attire guidelines, particularly in Hindu temples. Dharmadi highlighted that tourists often unintentionally violate sacred rules due to a lack of awareness.
Despite these efforts, concerns persist. Former Governor Wayan Koster suggested limiting visitor numbers last May due to disruptive behaviors, though the proposal wasn't put into action. Bali continues to grapple with the complexities of being Indonesia's top tourist destination.
To support the tourism police, "tourist companion dogs" have been introduced. Last year, Bali deported 340 foreigners for various offenses, a significant increase from previous years, including overstaying visas and inappropriate behavior in sacred sites.
Recent incidents, such as the arrest of U.S. and Bermudian tourists involved in a salon altercation and the apprehension of three Mexicans linked to a robbery, underscore ongoing challenges.
With tourism rebounding, Bali aims to attract seven million visitors this year, a stark contrast to the mere 51 foreign visitors in 2021. This resurgence has led to a parallel increase in demand for tattoos, apart from rental real estate.
Bali's tattoo industry benefits from its unique cultural backdrop and vibrant artistic community, attracting tourists and enthusiasts alike seeking permanent mementos of their visits. Renowned for their expertise, Bali tattoo artists blend traditional Balinese designs with modern techniques, making Bali a tattoo tourism hub.
Regulations surrounding the tattoo industry have tightened to maintain safety and hygiene standards, reflecting the island's commitment to being a secure tattoo destination. This regulatory oversight aligns with the broader trend in global travel, where visitors seek authentic experiences, turning a tattoo from Bali into a lasting symbol of the island's cultural richness.

HSMAI Chinese Auction
On October 17th, I attended the HSMAI Chinese Auction. This event was intended to raise funds for the HTM program at San Diego State. The night included an open networking hour, dinner, and then the actual auction. I attended with another student from the HTM program, Nineth Salazar, and we split coins to participate in the auction. I felt slightly nervous when I arrived because there were a lot of industry professionals there and Nineth and I were the only students actually attending the event. I did create three goals for myself for the event: actually have a conversation with at least one professional at the event in order to practice interpersonal communication, connect with one on LinkedIn to stay networked after the event, and receive at least one business card in order to practice my professionalism by asking for one. I felt like my goals were easily attainable if I was willing to go a bit out of my comfort zone and approach people I’ve never spoken to before.
At the event, Heidi Alcantara, Edlen’s San Diego Branch Director of Sales, went up to Nineth and I to introduce herself and encourage us to reach out to talk to people. She explained how she was in charge of hosting and planning the event and that she was excited to see us there participating. Although she approached us first, it was still nerve wracking to talk to a professional, but I managed to pull myself together quickly and hold a conversation about the event, her role, and even how she got to her current position, which meant one goal down! It was also reassuring to hear that all the professionals are open to talking to students and give them advice.
My second goal was to connect with one of the professionals there on LinkedIn. I had encountered Gillian Ware from the San Diego Tourism Authority before when she came to speak to my 330 class, but seeing her at this networking event allowed me to interact with her on a more personal basis. I sent her an invitation to connect on LinkedIn because now that i’ve interacted with her more than once, she knows I am interested in possibly working the operations side for a DMO. I foresee myself going to her as a resource if I’m interested in learning more about what it is like working for a DMO or even if I have an assignment that requires looking further into DMOs.
My third goal was to acquire a business card. Luckily, upon interacting with Gillian, I managed to get her business card. I felt this goal meant a lot to me because it’s usually the last thing you get when you finish your conversation with someone, and I’m glad she gave me the time to talk to her. Also, having her business card means I can save it and have her personal information, which makes her a lot more accessible to me.
Overall, the Chinese Auction was very fun, because all of the professionals were having a good time trying to win the auction. I also managed to connect with some professionals and practice communication and professionalism in a setting that I will be around a lot when I begin to join a professional association. I look forward to using what I learned from this event and propel it to make me a better networker; I was a bit awkward at some instances and felt intimidated because of my status as a student, but now that I know what to expect, I’ll do a lot better next time I attend a networking event. I like that I’m making connections with people that are in specified sectors of my interest because it means I can begin to develop myself professionally in the event industry and have a network of professionals that can help me reach my goals.

I’ve always loved architecture where there is one opening after another continuously down a single passage way. I’ve lived in Egypt and have taken a hundred photos inside and outside ornate mosques, palaces and temples, loving every single one I’ve ever seen. This day I got to take one on the grounds of the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. Leaning in the first opening, posing perfectly for my Instagram moment, *click, click, click* “One of these poses has to be good enough!” I actually had to hurry, because getting a shot without people in the background is the challenge. . I love these old deep rust colored walls. Aging yet ageless ~timeless, just like me. . I’m in the moment, yet back in time. . I don’t even know what I’m feeling, so I just open to experiencing. With every step, I keep my awareness here and also way back when; and want to soak in anything that is available to me. Weaving my way through these multiple entrances, never an exit, only continuous discovery into the next and next and next. . Wow, continuous discovery, like walking from one dimension to another, each one leading to the other. Separate but all one at the same time. . It’s mind boggling and I just want to lose all logic, knowing this physical structure is a space holder of now, the unseen past. I know there is something here and long to capture in my mind’s eye, because naturally I am making profound connections with my soul stirrings as part of this time travel experience. . . “Travel, like dreams, is a door that opens from the real world into a world that is yet to be discovered.” -Guy de Maupassant . I couldn’t say it better. . This is why I lead spiritual journeys and take you through unique experiences where you meet your soul in all kinds of places and unexpected spaces. . Sound intriguing? . Imagine cruising down the freeway, the wind in your hair, and suddenly, there it is – a giant billboard screaming a message at you. 18.2 Remembrance Day: Feeling the importance of the day
Part One - By Lana Carbon
This November 11th, I made a discovery…
Every year, around the first of November, I would buy my poppy to pin to my jacket and then I would continue about my business as though nothing had changed until the 11th day when we would stand for our two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m.
When those seemingly long two minutes came to an end, it was back to work. Please don’t get me wrong, during this time I did contemplate everything those brave men and women sacrificed for our freedoms but then it was back to the daily grind as if this was merely a blip on the radar.
This all changed for me this year.
For the first time since we have been together, John took the day off from her regular gig to truly honour those who had fought so valiantly for their country. Ordinarily, she would attend a ceremony close to where she works but would then have to return to the office, quite emotional and not wanting to be there. We decided we would go to a ceremony together as I had never been to one (I am not including those school functions where we all crammed into the gymnasium and didn’t have the maturity to realize it was more than just an excuse to get out of class).
It was so interesting for me to see how serious John became about the planning. Did she have enough poppies, which was the best of the three local ceremonies, were we going too far considering she wanted to visit the cemetery where her grandfather (who fought in the Second World War) lays buried…
I started to contemplate how it must be for those people who had someone in their family who served or is serving. It started to sink in how frightened a person would be everyday that their loved one was away fighting, not knowing whether they were hurt or even alive. It made me think about the loss. The most profound realization was that it was for all of us.
This year, I watched a parade with literally hundreds of men and women in uniform gathering around one small cenotaph as veterans and community leaders laid wreaths in memory of those who died to keep us all safe and free. When it came time to bow our heads for two minutes of silence, I truly felt the waves of emotion crash over me and cried for those who came before and gave the ultimate sacrifice for all of us.
I get it now.
Thank you, John, for helping me to open my eyes. This is more than a short two minutes once a year. This is something I shall always…
REMEMBER!
Part Two - by John Lilies
November 11th is deeply important to me.
As Lana explained, my maternal grandfather fought in WWII. I don’t know where he fought. I don’t entirely know what he did though I have an idea. I don’t know what he saw but I can imagine. I don’t know whom he lost but I know he survived.
He didn’t speak of his experience in the war. Most don’t and I likely wouldn’t either.
The not knowing has plagued my adult existence thus far. I’ve tried in the past to find details on his service but have as of yet been unsuccessful.
I was 13 going on 14 when my grandfather died. I loved him dearly though I hardly knew anything about him. He was a man of few words and great love. He squashed our rib cages with the strongest bear hugs imaginable. Every ounce of love he had for his entire brood of grandchildren, showed in his eyes without any guard. He was beautiful.
He survived the war but I’m positive he lost a significant portion of self within the experience.
Growing up, my Remembrance Day involvement was much like Lana’s… Memorize and recite In Flanders Fields, stand at attention for the two minutes of silence, listen to a recording of Taps, kids sing war-related songs – and few of us truly understand what it all means.
I was in high school when it started making more of an impact on me and by college, I was wishing my grandfather had been around long enough for me to reach a mature level of awareness and ask the questions now burning a hole in my heart. To this day I feel confident he would have opened up to me.
For years as an adult, my Remembrance Day ritual consisted of a visit to my grandfather’s grave and leaving my poppy behind at his stone. Then I began incorporating a ceremony close to my office. In the two minutes of silence, I thank each person who fought and still fights. I thank my grandfather for volunteering with no guarantee of success or survival. I ask him to help me understand what he went through.
After the tragic events in Ottawa last year, shortly before Remembrance Day, I decided I would no longer work on November 11th and instead dedicate the day to attending a service or two, and continuing my tradition of hanging out with my grandfather and giving him my poppy.
This year was even more special, having the opportunity to introduce Lana to the rich and emotional experience. This year it felt more emotional than ever with the large number of participants and uniforms. This year I didn’t know if I could ever stop my tears. This year… I knew not the impact it was having on Lana and that impression has made the day immensely more important.
Thank you, Lana, for joining me and finding true meaning in the ritual of Remembrance.
